To prevent or slow resistance, new antibiotics are used rarely - held in reserve for serious infections One COVID-19 lesson is already clear: The time to invest in preparedness for the next pandemic is now.

A major focus of our preparedness effort must be combating the foes we know -- namely drug - resistant superbugs. Without swift action to address this public health threat, I fear we’ll be facing the next deadly pandemic sooner rather than later.

Like COVID-19, antimicrobial resistance - which occurs when strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens develop resistance to the medications used to treat them -- is a global crisis.

Camp, designed for kids ages 10 to 13, features intermediate classes in acting, singing, dance and technical production. Group B Camp is also open to ages 1014 in Aventura. Group C Camp, for teens ages 13 to 18 with a moderate amount of theater training, explores voice and diction, character analysis, scene study, dialects, styles and methods.

Young Professionals Camp, for teens ages 13-18, is open for enrollment by audition only for campers with previous experience, and campers must participate in a full seven-day, fourweek program.

Last week on April 12, 2022, South Florida joined communities worldwide in marking the 120th anniversary of the birthdate of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.

Often described as the most influential Rabbi in modern history, the Rebbe’s visionary efforts to reconnect Jews everywhere with their Jewish heritage have touched millions of lives and forever transformed the landscape of Jewish life. His teachings, emphasize the inherent goodness of mankind, the infinite potential within every individual and the profound value of even the smallest good deed, inspired multitudes and resonated globally around the world.

The Rebbe was the only Rabbi ever to receive the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor and to have an American National Day proclaimed in his honor “Education and Sharing Day USA,”. His role within the Jewish community was unparalleled, both as a preeminent scholar and as an indefatigable leader.

Last year President Biden joined all preceding U.S. Presidents, going back to President Carter, in dedicating this day to the Rebbe. On April 18, 1978, our Nation’s first Education Day, U.S.A., the Rebbe wrote that “we can neither be satisfied nor slacken our efforts” so long as

‘We the People’ Are the New, Permanent Underclass in America

“We are now speeding down the road of wasteful spending and debt, and unless we can escape we will be smashed in inflation.”— Herbert Hoover This is financial tyranny.

The U.S. Government — and that includes the current administration — is spending money it doesn’t have on programs it can’t afford, and “we the taxpayers” are the ones who must foot the bill for the Government’s fiscal insanity.

We’ve been sold a bill of goods by politicians promising to pay down the national debt,

of Health and Human Services (which manages the Medicare and Medicaid government health insurance programs), and the Department of Defense.”

According to the Committee for a Reasonable Federal Budget, the interest we’ve paid on this borrowed money is “nearly twice what the Federal Government will spend on transportation infrastructure, over four times as much as it will spend on K-12 education, almost four times what it will spend on housing, and over eight times what it will spend on science, space, and technology.”

We have no real say in how the government runs, or how our taxpayer funds are used, but we’re being forced to pay through the nose, anyhow.

We have no real say, but that doesn’t prevent the government from fleecing us at every turn and forcing us to pay for endless wars that do more to fund the military industrial complex than protect us, pork barrel projects that produce little to nothing, and a police state that serves only to imprison us within its walls.

If you have no choice, no voice, and no real options when

agendas and the courts have repeatedly upheld the government’s power to penalize or jail those who refused to pay their taxes.

While we’re struggling to get by, and making tough decisions about how to spend what little money actually makes it into our pockets after the federal, state and local governments take their share (this doesn’t include the stealth taxes imposed through tolls, fines and other fiscal penalties), the government continues to do whatever it likes — levy taxes, rack up debt, spend outrageously and irresponsibly —

Essentially, the U.S. government is funding its very existence with a credit card jumpstart the economy, rebuild our infrastructure, secure our borders, ensure our security, and make us all healthy, wealthy and happy.

None of that has come to pass, and yet we’re still being loaded down with debt not of our own making.

Let’s talk numbers, shall we?

The national debt (the amount the Federal Government has borrowed over the years and must pay back) is $30 Trillion and growing. That translates to roughly $242,000 per taxpayer.

Now the Biden Administration is proposing a $5.8 trillion spending budget that notably includes $813 Billion for national defense, $30 Billion to “fund the police,” and a plan to reduce the national deficit by roughly $1 Trillion over 10 years through additional tax hikes.

It’s estimated that the amount this country owes is now 130% greater than its gross domestic product (all the products and services produced in one year by labor and property supplied by the citizens).

The U.S. ranks as the 12th most indebted nation in the world, with much of that debt owed to the Federal Reserve, large investment funds and foreign governments, namely, Japan and China.

Essentially, the U.S. Government is funding its very existence with a credit card.

In 2021, we paid more than $562 billion in interest on that public debt, which according to journalist Rob Garver, “is more than the annual budget of every individual federal agency except for the Treasury, the Department

Clearly, the national debt isn’t going away anytime soon, especially not with government spending on the rise and interest payments making up such a large chunk of the budget.

Still, the government remains unrepentant, unfazed and undeterred in its wanton spending.

Indeed, the national deficit (the difference between what the government spends and the revenue it takes in) remains at more than $1.5 Trillion.

If Americans managed their personal finances the way the government mismanages the nation’s finances, we’d all be in debtors’ prison by now.

Despite the government propaganda being peddled by the politicians and news media, however, the government isn’t spending our tax dollars to make our lives better.

We’re being robbed blind so the governmental elite can get richer. We’re not living the American dream. We’re living a financial nightmare.

In the eyes of the government, “we the people, the voters, the consumers, and the taxpayers” are little more than pocketbooks waiting to be picked.

“We the people” have become the new, permanent underclass in America.

Consider: The government can seize your home and your car (which you’ve bought and paid for) over nonpayment of taxes. Government agents can freeze and seize your bank accounts and other valuables if they merely “suspect” wrongdoing. And the IRS insists on getting the first cut of your salary to pay for government programs

it comes to the government’s claims on your property and your money, you’re not free.

It wasn’t always this way, of course.

Early Americans went to war over the inalienable rights described by philosopher John Locke as the natural rights of life, liberty and property.

It didn’t take long, however — a hundred years, in fact — before the American government was laying claim to the citizenry’s property by levying taxes to pay for the Civil War. As the New York Times reports, “Widespread resistance led to its repeal in 1872.”

Determined to claim some of the citizenry’s wealth for its own uses, the government reinstituted the income tax in 1894.

Charles Pollock challenged the tax as unconstitutional, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in his favor. Pollock’s victory was relatively short-lived. Members of Congress—united in their determination to tax the American people’s income — worked together to adopt a constitutional amendment to overrule the Pollock decision.

On the eve of World War I, in 1913, Congress instituted a permanent income tax by way of the 16th Amendment to the Constitution and the Revenue Act of 1913. Under the Revenue Act, individuals with income exceeding $3,000 could be taxed starting at 1% up to 7% for incomes exceeding $500,000.

It’s all gone downhill from there.

Unsurprisingly, the government has used its tax powers to advance its own imperialistic

with little thought for the plight of its citizens.

To top it all off, all of those wars the U.S. is so eager to fight abroad are being waged with borrowed funds. As The Atlantic reports, “U.S. leaders are essentially bankrolling the wars with debt, in the form of purchases of U.S. Treasury bonds by U.S.based entities like pension funds and state and local governments, and by countries like China and Japan.”

Of course, we’re the ones who will have to repay that borrowed debt.

For instance, American taxpayers have been forced to shell out more than $5.6 Trillion since 9/11 for the military industrial complex’s costly, endless socalled “war on terrorism.” That translates to roughly $23,000 per taxpayer to wage wars abroad, occupy foreign countries, provide financial aid to foreign allies, and fill the pockets of defense contractors and grease the hands of corrupt foreign dignitaries.

Mind you, that staggering $6 trillion is only a portion of what the Pentagon spends on America’s military empire.

The United States also spends more on foreign aid than any other nation, with nearly $300 Billion disbursed over a five year period. More than 150 countries around the world receive U.S. taxpayer - funded assistance, with most of the funds going to the Middle East, Africa and Asia. That price tag keeps growing, too.

As Forbes reports, “U.S. foreign aid dwarfs the federal funds spent by 48 out of 50 state gov-

ernments annually. Only the state governments of California and New York spent more federal funds than what the U.S. sent abroad each year to foreign countries.”

Most recently, in response to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, the Biden Administration approved $13.6 billion in military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, with an additional $200 Million for immediate military assistance.

As Dwight D. Eisenhower warned in a 1953 speech, this is how the military industrial complex will continue to get richer, while the American taxpayer will be forced to pay for programs that do little to enhance our lives, ensure our happiness and well-being, or secure our freedoms.

This is no way of life.

Yet it’s not just the government’s endless wars that are bleeding us dry. We’re also being forced to shell out money for surveillance systems to track our movements, money to further militarize our already militarized police, money to allow the government to raid our homes and bank accounts, money to fund schools where our kids learn nothing about freedom and everything about how to comply, and on and on.

It’s tempting to say that there’s little we can do about it, except that’s not quite accurate.

There are a few things we can do (demand transparency, reject cronyism and graft, insist on fair pricing and honest accounting methods, call a halt to incentivedriven government programs that prioritize profits over people), but it will require that “we the people” stop playing politics and stand united against the politicians and corporate interests who have turned our government and economy into a pay-to-play exercise in fascism.

Unfortunately, we’ve become so invested in identity politics that pit us against one another and keep us powerless and divided that we’ve lost sight of the one label that unites us: we’re all Americans.

Trust me, we’re all in the same boat, folks, and there’s only one real life preserver: that’s the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The Constitution starts with those three powerful words: “We the people.”

There is power in our numbers.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, that remains our greatest strength in the face of a governmental elite that continues to ride roughshod over the populace. It remains our greatest defense against a government that has claimed for itself unlimited power over the purse (taxpayer funds) and the sword (military might).

Where we lose out is when we fall for the big - talking politicians who spend big at our expense.

Mom’s Brunch Made Easy It’s Simple and It’s Scrumptious (Family Features) A Mother’s Day brunch doesn’t need to be fancy, plus it gives mom a chance to sleep in. With its prime positioning between breakfast and lunch, brunch is a more casual and lighter alternative to the typical lunch or dinner.

When charged with planning this for mom, a little pre-planning can go a long way toward ensuring your brunch gettogether is as simple as it is scrumptious.

Get creative with decor. When prepping your tablescape, think outside the box. Opt for unexpected serving dishes such as tartlet tins and vases, and transfer syrups and jams from their everyday containers to glass bowls or creamers. Fresh flowers and produce can add natural pops of color to the table and a bowl of fruit can make for an eye-catching centerpiece.

Plan a variety of dishes. Make sure you have a mix of both sweet and savory dishes on the menu that can please a wide variety of palates. Earmarking some recipes that can be made ahead, like pastries and casseroles, can be a simple way to avoid waking up extra early to prepare. Save the morning of your event for dishes that are best served fresh, like this Herbed Spanish Omelet, which features potatoes; fresh, spring herbs; and red onions, and packs protein, B-vitamins and Cancer-protective phytochemicals.

Serve it buffet-style. Setting your spread out on the counter and allowing family to help themselves not only makes it easier for the family to relax, but it allows everyone to customize their meals as they wish and gives the gathering a more casual vibe. Try themed stations, such as a coffee or mimosa bar, parfait bar or bread bar, in addition to more traditional dishes to let everyone take the customization to the next level.

For more brunch ideas and recipes, visit Culinary.net Herbed Spanish Omelet Reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research Servings: 4 • 1 pound potatoes, peeled and diced or shredded • water • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1/2 cup diced red onion • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 4 large whole eggs, lightly beaten • 2 egg whites, lightly beaten • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives • salt, to taste (optional) • fresh herb sprigs, for garnish (optional) Place potatoes in large pan. Cover with water. Bring to boil and cook, uncovered, 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand about 10 minutes, or until potatoes are tender. Drain well.

In deep, 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and garlic. Cook about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add potatoes and cook 5 minutes.

Combine whole eggs and egg whites.

Stir in parsley, basil and chives. Season with salt, to taste, if desired. Pour mixture over potatoes in hot skillet. Reduce heat and cook, uncovered, about 10 minutes, or until bottom of omelet is golden.

If desired, brown top under toaster oven. Garnish with fresh herb sprigs, if desired.

Eggy Lemon Sandwich Cookies Recipe courtesy of the American Egg Board and “Joy the Baker” Total time: 1 hour, 40 minutes Yield: 16-18 cookies Dough: • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 3/4 cup vegetable shortening • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, • softened to room temperature • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1 large egg • 2 tablespoons whole milk • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Lemon Curd: • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice • 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 3 large eggs • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes Buttercream: • 1 cup unsalted butter, • softened to room temperature • 2 cups powdered sugar • 1 pinch salt • 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest • 1-2 tablespoons warm milk • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds To make dough: In medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. In bowl of stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, cream together shortening and butter until well combined. Scrape down sides of bowl, add sugar and beat on medium speed until pale and fluffy, 3-5 minutes. Add egg, milk and vanilla extract; beat until combined. Add dry ingredients and beat on low until dough forms. Scrape down sides of bowl to ensure no dry pockets

Eggy Lemon Sandwich Cookies at bottom. Wrap and refrigerate dough 30 minutes. Place rack in upper third of oven and preheat to 350 F. Roll half of dough on lightly floured counter to 1/41/2-inch thickness. Cut with 2-3-inch egg cookie cutter and place on parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Use 1inch round or egg-shaped cookie cutter to cut yolk holes out of half the cookies.

Bake 8-10 minutes until just golden around edges. Cool before filling.

To make lemon curd: In 2-quart heavy saucepan, whisk juice, zest, sugar and eggs. Stir in butter and cook over low heat, whisking frequently, until curd is thick enough to hold marks of whisk and bubbles appear on surface, about 6 minutes. Transfer lemon curd to bowl and chill, covered with plastic wrap, until cold, at least 1 hour.

To make buttercream: In medium bowl using electric hand mixer, beat butter until well softened. Add powdered sugar, salt and lemon zest; beat on low.

Add milk and whip to combine. Beat in poppy seeds. Transfer frosting to ziptop bag with corner cut off or piping bag with medium round tip. Leave buttercream at room temperature until ready to pipe. To assemble cookies: Flip each whole egg cookie so bottoms are facing up. Pipe buttercream frosting around edges. Spoon 2-3 teaspoons lemon curd into centers of cookies. Top each with one cookie with hole; press gently and spoon 1 teaspoon lemon curd into cookie hole.

Update On Hallandale Beach Issues First In Person Town Hall Held at Foster Park In Almost Three Years

Our first community meeting back in person in almost 3 years. We discussed the changes and challenges of housing as well as updates from the city. We were also joined by Broward County Housing Director Ralph Stone, Commissioner Beam Furr and Hallandale Beach Police Department Interim Chief Michel Michel I want to thank all of the residents that came out to my first In-Person Town Hall held at Foster Park. It was great to see all of you in person to give updates on our City issues and listen to your concerns. It has been difficult over the past few years not being able to meet in person. I’m sure that we all missed the personal interactions and debates that we have together Live and In-Person.

Many residents asked me about Foster Park and what is going to be done with the facility.

Months ago, our Staff issued a Request For Proposals “RFP” for interested individuals or entities to provide programming at the park. I am not at liberty to discuss the “RFP” as it is a code of silence. I encouraged the attendees to go on our Web-site for all the information.

Commissioner Beam Furr joined us for the meeting and updated us on housing issues.

The Tuesday before, Broward County had a discussion on how they can legally address the housing crisis. Collectively, we all agreed that this is one of the most pressing issues facing South Florida. They are having the County Attorney look into whether or not they have the ability to implement Rent Caps.

In light of this issue, I invited Ralph Stone from Broward County Housing and Finance. He shared that they were at a 55%

The other issue Hallandale Beach is seeing are large investors going in and buying up apartment buildings. Residents are given notice that the building was sold and then they have limited time to move out. Once purchased, the rents are doubling.

For many residents, they have been spending upwards of $1,000 a month for a 1 Bedroom.

The cost has now risen to a range of $1,800 - $2,300, which is having a crippling effect on many lower income residents and even harder for those on fixed incomes.

Mr. Stone explained that when they provide affordable housing dollars, the units are capped due to agreements to maintain prop-

erties as affordable. Our City uses the same practice. They have actually joined with our CRA in certain projects. The most recent is Solaris near Bluesten Park. His division also provides homeowner assistance for down payments, home maintenance and they also have Relief Funds that they are implementing for non-entitlement cities with populations under 50,000.

In addition to Commissioner Furr and Mr. Stone, I invited Interim Chief Michel Michel to update our residents on our Police Department. Chief Michel has been actually serving our community for over 18 years and has been Interim Chief for 6 months. Over the past months, he has implemented many projects that have sadly been sitting and collecting dust.

He briefed us on the new Shot Spotter Technology. This new system allows our Department to know in real time when a shot is actually fired. Currently, the System covers West of Federal Highway, with the goal of expanding the System to include

some first-line antibiotics. That makes the need for additional and better options even more important. For example, Diabetes, also common in my family, raises risks of all sorts of infections -- foot, kidney, and bladder -- and the seriousness of them. We worry about running out of options for otherwise routine ear, bladder, or strep infections. So should you. People undergoing common dental care to dialysis to chemotherapy all face infection risks and need antibiotics to cure them.

But protecting against wide-

spread antimicrobial resistance won’t be possible without government support.

U.S. biotech firms have the know-how to develop new antibiotics, but the antibiotic market is broken. To prevent or slow resistance, new antibiotics are used rarely -- held in reserve for serious infections. As a result, many firms that have invested hundreds of millions and spent years pursuing novel antibiotics end up declaring bankruptcy because sales of their drug are too small. Policymakers are aware of this problem, but pro-

Another program is our License Plate Readers. LPRs do just that. They read plates and send the information automatically to be researched. Stolen vehicles or vehicles tied to a crime, trigger an alert directly to our Patrols. Recently, our Department apprehended a stolen car and one criminal, the other individual had fled.

In addition to our technology, there has been a strong push for training. The residents were very happy that we are focusing on de-escalation training. I am also as happy as the residents that we are finally filling Police Department Position Vacancies.

At one point, we were down over 22 Positions. We still have some Vacancies, but the Chief hopes to have them filled soon. I do need to note that we do lose officers from retirement and there are simply those that want to transfer to other Departments, which is typical in all Police Departments.

Residents shared their desire

to be involved with the Chief’s hiring process. I explained that the City Manager is responsible for hiring and firing. The Chief has not established whether he may be going out for a search. I did tell the attendees that I will share their comments.

The main point that I heard was that the residents are concerned about hiring someone from outside our agency because that individual will not know our City and more importantly, will not know our residents either. The Chief was modest in his sharing how much he has turned the Department around. I personally believe he is doing an amazing job! It shows in the morale of the Department which is extremely important. In my opinion, we want well trained high caliber Police Officers.

More importantly, the Officers need to know that the Chief has their backs, however, he is also willing to make tough decisions.

City Manager Stan Morris brought his recommendation to appoint Santiago to the permanent position of Police Chief at a Special City Commission Meeting, where Santiago was confirmed by a unanimous vote of the Commission.

“Eddie has the skills, the experience, and the drive to lead our police department into a new era,” says Sunny Isles Beach City Manager, Stan Morris. “He is connected to the Sunny Isles Beach community and has earned their trust and the trust of our City Commission.”

Santiago has over 25 years of experience in law enforcement.

Mold or mold spores may cause asthma attacks in people who have asthma and are allergic to mold.

Even in some nonallergic individuals, mold can cause symptoms of irritation in the eyes, skin and airways. For example, the “black mold” Stachybotrys, along with some other types of mold, produce toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals. No Home Surprises Act 4 in 5 Florida Landlords Want Federal Protection From Surprise Regulations A survey of 3,240 landlords revealed that over 4 in 5 (83%) landlords in Florida believe a federal law should be introduced to protect them from surprise property regulations that could cost thousands in maintenance fees Home ownership is a dream many Americans pursue with great desire, vigor and of course, a tight budget above all. Some have even taken the next step by buying additional properties – or several – which means the potential costs involved in maintenance are multiplied too. Any landlord will have learned that unforeseen costs are just part of the business of owning property, however, sometimes this is a lesson learned a little too late.

A survey of 3,240 landlords by DeckandBalconyInspections.co m revealed that over 4 in 5 (83%) landlords in Florida believe a federal law should be introduced to

protect them from surprise property regulations that could cost thousands in maintenance fees.

At first glance, it might seem preposterous for landlords to demand federal protection from unforeseen costs, but digging deeper into the issue, they do have two solid arguments at their disposal. As of January 1, 2022, the ‘No Surprises Act’ came into effect. This federal law protects people covered under group and individual health plans from receiving surprise medical bills for things like emergency services, even if these services were out-of-network and received without prior authorization. But, as aforementioned, expensive medical bills are not the only costs with which people may be unexpectedly hit: for example, in 2015, California authorities introduced a new ‘balcony inspection law’ (following a tragic balcony collapse in Berkeley). This law, which came into effect in 2019, states that certain structures with wood balconies, decks, stairs and walkways will require a deep dive inspection for safety purposes and owners have until January 1, 2025, to complete all initial inspections. While these laws are, of course, necessary for safety and security reasons,

landlords and homeowners also risk the potential of running into thousands of dollars in property maintenance fees. Those who own properties near the ocean or in more wet weather conditions have a higher chance of being hit with these costs, given the increased chance of property damage due to these factors.

Moreover, with climate change having a strong influence in extreme weather (such as natural disasters and unpredictable storms), it is likely that landlords in the Sunshine State will be burdened with increased costs to make their properties more resistant to climate change-related factors – something they argue that they are not responsible for.

Therefore, it makes sense why over 1 in 3 (32%) aspiring landlords who were surveyed admit the prospect of climate changerelated property costs dissuades them from doing so.
