We still have rights. Technically, at least. The government may act as if its police state powers suppress individual liberties during this COVID-19 pandemic, but for all intents and purposes, the Constitution—especially the battered, besieged Bill of Rights— still stands in theory, if not in practice. Indeed, while federal and state governments have adopted specific restrictive measures in an effort to lockdown the nation and decelerate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the current public health situation has not resulted in the suspension of fundamental constitutional rights such as freedom of speech and the right of assembly. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) announces dates for the Class of 2020 virtual graduation ceremonies, scheduled to take place from June 15 – 28. Each graduation ceremony will broadcast live on BECON-TV and stream live via YouTube so family and friends, local and across the country, will be able to join in celebrating this milestone achievement of their seniors. All ceremonies will provide the traditional pomp and circumstance, including speeches by student representatives, School Board members, District and school administrators, roll call of graduates and other school graduation traditions. The decision for virtual graduation ceremonies came after meetings between administrators, teachers and student leaders to provide input and consider graduation options. BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie said in his letter to the Class of 2020, “With the education and training you have received, you are well prepared to be successful on whatever

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a bewildering time. While demonstrators clamor for the world to reopen, health experts say we’re not yet ready. Whom to believe? I listen to the health experts. My dog compels me to don a mask and become an “essential walker” several times a day, but otherwise I stay home and wonder when I’ll be able once again to roam and wander freely.
