Leave it to Gulfstream Park to know how to throw the ultimate horse racing party.

While threatening weather hung around south Florida on Saturday, it never dampened the enthusiasm or spirit of racing fans who flocked to Hallandale Beach in huge numbers for a day of racing and plenty of fun.

As the Kentucky Derby took place before 165,000 fans in

Louisville, Gulfstream Park – as it does every year – took on the spirit of the event with fancy hats, cool beverages and great racing.

“Tremendous day to spend relaxing and trying to win some money,” Lourdes King of North Miami Beach said, sipping from a special drink made for the big race day. “The weather is kind of gloomy, but it didn’t seem to bother anyone.”

As everyone came to celebrate the

Kentucky Derby, there was much more to this day that featured live racing from Gulfstream – mixed in with Louisville and dozens of other tracks across the country.

“We come here at least five times a year,” said Daria Burke of Hollywood.

“Florida Derby is a must, but so is a day like today, especially because we have live racing to watch all day.”

hosted a 1972 event for those who are turning 60 this year.

It was also a chance for other classes of the past to meet and spend the day having a few cold drinks, talking about old times and listening to music all day long.

“This is a great day to come out here and get some sun, walk around and enjoy this fabulous park,” Elias McDermott of Miami Shores said. “We never knew much about this

until I was told by a friend who came the past two years. I can tell you that this will be an annual thing for me.”

For Bob Nieman of Pembroke Pines, it was a walk down memory lane. The 1972 graduate of North Miami High has spent his childhood at Greynolds Park, climbing the legendary hill, using the paddleboats and playing golf at the nearby course.

In addition, Nieman, a former police officer, came out to enjoy the music of one-time New York City Police Trainee Eddie Money, who took the stage and was impressive – to say the

least, belting out such hits as “Take Me Home Tonight”, “Two Tickets To Paradise”, “Baby Hold On”, “Walk On Water” and many more.

“Eddie Money was as good as we remembered,” Nieman said. “He is such a gracious man who took photos with us and everything.

We came out here last year, but this was better, I think.”

While Money was the headliner, other local bands had the large crowds rocking throughout the day. The Mojo Scoundrels, Mr. Nice Guy and Black Star, a group that has been around since the late 1980s, also were impressive.

Music, food and drink were not the only thing going on Sunday. The antique car show and numerous vendors that lined Greynolds Park were also a huge hit for everyone who attended.

“The one thing is really neat about coming to an event like this is that you get to see friends from the past and relive some of what we grew up with,” Jessie Moreno said. “I live in Daytona Beach now, but back in the 70s and 80s, this is where I came to have a great time. I lived like a mile from here.”

Hallandale Beach Parks In The Spotlight The City Commission Has Approved A Referendum Question To Ask The Voters

HALLANDALE BEACH - At the writing of this week’s article I have been told if all goes as planned Editor Larry Blustein’ s surgery will take place this week.

It is obvious that he and his family are in our prayers as he goes through his transplant surgery.

Larry has been very lucky to have found a living donor that he has known since his childhood school days. What an amazing gift of life.

When I last saw Larry last he told me transplants can cost upwards to 100,000 dollars and it is not fully covered by insurance,

The City and CRA did the same with BF James Park. This park is located in the core area of the CRA. The CRA board wanted to

The city commission has approved a referendum question to ask the voters our residents of they want to pay to build our parks through a 30 year bond in the amount of 58 million. The referendum will be asking voter if they support to add debt service to their tax bill for a period of thirty years for 93 dollars per 100,000 dollars of taxable value annually. The measure will ensure every park was completed over a 6 year period. We are not raising taxes as a commission. The bond would have a beginning and an end similar to mortgage and is a less costly way to fund the parks due to borrowing costs.

On Tuesday night the city hosted a meeting to review the NE Drainage Project with concerned residents from the area. The residents on 14th Avenue are still dealing with the construction of the two pumping stations and are rightfully frustrated. Many of these residents have had to endure the brunt of the dust and dirt since it began back in February 2013.

The other side streets are still going through the final stages of sod sidewalks and asphalt repair.

The last heavy storm residents phoned me that the pump was gone and the drains were not working. Sadly one of the temporary pumps was stolen not removed. This combined with sod that float over the drains created elevated water levels. Staff has replaced the pump and cleared the sod.

The pumps that are under construction are scheduled to be done in July. There will be one main pump at each site and a backup. Each station will also house a generator in the event of power outages. Each condo parking lot that has been impacted by construction will be repaired and sealed. The city will also clean the drains to ensure the additional sand and soil from construction Is removed and they are all working properly.

I want to once again apologize to our residents that have had to endure this project over the past year. In the end the project will have addressed a critical need to protect property and make sure there is access to the area for our safety personnel.

Nathan Sawaya’s New LEGO Artwork to Make First-Ever Florida Appearance at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Hollywood, Fla. – Internationally renowned artist Nathan Sawaya returns this summer to the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood with new sculptures and mixed-media works that continue to change the way we look at LEGO® bricks. The Art of Nathan Sawaya featuring In Pieces builds upon Sawaya’s previous body of work with ground-breaking LEGO® sculptures that are integrated into large-scale photographs by award-winning Australian photographer Dean West. This is the first time Sawaya’s collaboration with West – In Pieces – will be exhibited in Florida.

This awe-inspiring exhibition kicks off on Saturday, June 7 at the Center with an artist talk at 11 a.m. followed by a reception and book signing by Sawaya. Members are admitted free to this special event, while nonmembers pay $10 per person. Sawaya’s new exhibition runs through Sunday, Aug. 17.

Sawaya’s 2012 show at the Center attracted attendees from 28 states and 26 countries. In the past year, Sawaya’s incredible creations were seen by tens of thousands of people in Singapore, Shanghai, Dublin, Tel Aviv, Brussels, and Discovery Times Square in New York City. He was also chosen by Robert De Niro’s legendary Tribeca Film Festival as the winning art prize awarded for excellence in film making.

CNN called Sawaya’s work one of the Top 10 “must see exhibitions in the world.” The New York Times wrote, “It is difficult to walk through this exhibition and not smile in amazement…Mr. Sawaya’s playfulness is contagious.” TimeOut New York Kids added, “What’s remarkable about the show…is that it appeals equally, but on different levels, to kids and adults.”

For Sawaya’s show, the Center is bringing

back the popular Interactive Art Area, where children of all ages can have fun making their own LEGO® creations. Also in conjunction with The Art of Nathan Sawaya featuring In Pieces, the Center is presenting again the Florida BRICK Creation Challenge. Florida residents ages 6 and older can use their own LEGO® pieces to create and compete in this exciting, state-wide contest and exhibition. Pieces will be displayed in the Center’s gallery and each participating group of entrants will be awarded prizes according to the contest’s categories. Sawaya is a former New York attorney who quit his day job to risk it all to pursue his passion for art. California Dreaming No matter where you went on Saturday, the buzz certainly centered around California Chrome, which does not have the “Kentucky Blue Blood” lineage that every other Derby horse had. It was certainly a Cinderella story at its very finest. A $10,000 purchase that came into the Kentucky Derby as a huge favorite after our straight blowout wins in the past two months.

Even as many tried to bet against this horse, the owners and 78-yearold trainer refused to give in – and when he sprinted toward the finish line, his first trip to Kentucky, this improbable story unfolded before millions who watched across the world as the first California-bred since 1962 to win the prestigious event.

“I had the winning ticket,” Hallandale Beach resident Alice Cummings said. “Me and probably a million other people. At least I won $7.”

On a day when the attention was squarely on Louisville, kudos to Gulfstream Park for making this a really special day!

Oral Side Effects of Medications

The next time you pop a pill, ask yourself this question: What will this medicine do to my mouth and teeth?

Generally speaking, medicines are designed to make you feel better. But all drugs, whether taken by mouth or injected, come with a risk of side effects, and hundreds of drugs are known to cause mouth (oral) problems. Medicines used to treat cancer, high blood pressure, severe pain, depression, allergies, and even the common cold can have a negative impact on your dental health. That’s why your dentist, not just your doctor, should always know about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements.

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) Some drugs can reduce the amount of saliva in your mouth, causing an uncomfortably dry mouth (xerostomia). Without enough saliva, the tissues in the mouth can become irritated and inflamed. This increases your risk for infection and gum disease.

More than 400 medications are known to cause dry mouth. Dry mouth is also a side effect of certain chemotherapy medicines.

Some medicines that list dry mouth as a side effect include: • Antihistamines • Antidepressants • Antipsychotics • Parkinson’s disease medications • Alzheimer’s disease medications • Lung inhalers • Certain blood pressure and heart medications, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, heart rhythm medications, and diuretics • Seizure medications • Isotretinoin, used to treat acne • Anti-anxiety medications • Anti-nausea and anti-diarrheal medicines • Narcotic pain medications • Scopolamine, used to prevent motion sickness • Anti-spasm medications Dry mouth can be a bothersome problem.

Inflammation of the Lining Inside of the Mouth (Mucositis) Mucositis is inflammation of the moist tissue lining the mouth and digestive tract. This tissue is called the mucous membrane. Mucositis is a common side effect of chemotherapy treatment. Doctors think that certain chemotherapy drugs, including methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil, trigger a complex pattern of biological changes that damage the cells that make up the mucous membranes.

Mucositis causes painful swelling of the mouth and tongue and can lead to bleeding, pain, and mouth ulcers. The condition can make it difficult to eat.

You are more likely to develop mucositis after taking chemotherapy drugs if you drink alcohol, use tobacco, do not take care of your teeth and gums, are dehydrated, or have diabetes, HIV, or kidney disease.

Fungal Infection Certain inhaler medications used for asthma may lead to a yeast infection in the mouth called oral candidiasis. Rinsing your mouth out with water after using an inhaler can help prevent this side effect.

Gum Swelling (Gingival Overgrowth) Some medications can cause a buildup of gum tissue, a condition called “gingival overgrowth.” Gum tissue becomes so swollen that it begins to grow over the teeth. Gingival over-

Mouth Sores (Ulcers) A mouth ulcer refers to an open (ulcerated) sore that occurs inside the mouth or on the tongue. Mouth ulcers are often compared to “craters” because they have a hole in the middle.

This hole is actually a break in the moist tissue (mucous membrane) that lines the mouth. Mouth sores may also be called canker sores.

Taste Changes, Including Metallic Taste Sometimes, a medication you take can alter your sense of taste. A change in the body’s ability to sense tastes is called dysgeusia.

Some drugs can make food taste different, or they can cause a metallic, salty, or bitter taste in your mouth. Taste changes are especially common among elderly patients who take multiple medications.

Usually the taste changes are temporary and go away when you stop taking the medicine.

Chemotherapy drugs, including methotrexate and doxorubicin, are a common cause of taste changes.

Many other medicines have been linked to taste changes.

Tooth Decay Long-term use of sweetened medications can lead to tooth decay. Sugar is an added ingredient in many types of drug products, from vitamins and cough drops to antacids and syrup-based medications. Rinse your mouth out after using such products, or ask your doctor or pharmacist if there is a sugarfree alternative.

Tooth Discoloration In the 1950s, doctors discovered that the use of tetracycline antibiotics during pregnancy led to brownish-color teeth in children.

When a person takes tetracycline, some of the medicine settles into the calcium that the body uses to build teeth. When the teeth grow in, they are a yellowish-color, and they gradually turn brown when exposed to sunlight.

Tetracycline, however, does not cause tooth discoloration if taken after all teeth are formed.

It only causes a change in tooth color if you take the medicine before the primary or secondary teeth come in.

Today, tetracycline and related antibiotics are not recommended during pregnancy or in young children (under age 8) whose teeth are still forming.

Other medicines are believed to affect materials in or on existing teeth, causing staining.

The following medicines can cause brown, yellow-brown, or gray tooth discoloration: • Amoxicillin-clavulanate (Augmentin), an antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections • Chlorhexidine, an antiseptic/disinfectant • Doxycycline, an antibiotic related to tetracycline often used to treat acne • Tetracycline, an antibiotic used to treat acne and some respiratory infections Too much fluoride (found in some chewable vitamins, toothpastes, and mouthwash) can lead to white streaks on the tooth enamel, or a whitish-brown discoloration. In severe cases, excess fluoride (called fluorosis) can lead to permanently stained brown teeth.

Splash into a Safe Summer in the City of Hollywood Throughout the month of May, we will celebrate National Water Safety Month. With thousands of swimming pools, beaches, canals, lakes, and other waterways right in our backyard, Broward County has one of the highest drowning rates amongst children ages 4 to 7. Through its Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, the City of Hollywood is offering swim lessons all summer long through a program that

combines a fun time in the pool with valuable water safety skills.

The program is designed to meet your child’s age and skill level.

Basic pool safety, lifeguard saves, how to wear a life jacket, and treading water are just a few of the many skills the program covers, along with some water games.

Group swim lessons are available for children and adults beginning with “Seals and Pups” for three year olds with a parent, “Seahorse” for children ages four and five, Learn-to-Swim course for children six continuing through to adults. Private lessons are also available for children with special needs or for those who need extra attention.

The City of Hollywood’s Learnto-Swim program includes: eight (8), 45-minute classes over a two week period, Monday through Thursday. These courses are taught by a certified American Red Cross Water Safety instructor at a low cost of $44.00 for the complete course. Courses are held bi-weekly at Driftwood Community

Open House, Eve On Front Porch Hallandale Beach’s Human Services Department and Police Department will hold a joint Open House and Evening on the Front Porch Community Event 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the 700 block of NW 7th Terrace. The 700 block of NW 7th Terrace is on the east side of the Austin Hepburn Center, 750 NW 8th Avenue.

“We want to let the community know what the Human Services Department offers to assist them,” said Cora Daise, Acting Director of Human

Services. “We want to introduce the community to our staff and be sure they know we are here to help.”

To reach a broader audience, the City combined the Open House with the highly successful Hallandale Beach Police Evening on the Front Porch outreach. Evening on the Front Porch was started in 2012 as a scaled-down version of the National Night Out Program. Police hold one event in each quadrant each year as a way to bring the community together and get

neighbors talking. At each event, there are games for children, community information for residents, police interaction with residents and free food.

The goal of the joint program is to add the extra dimension of introducing residents to the community services available at the Hepburn Center. Among the free services are oneto-one counseling with Social Workers, free food distribution, senior programs, community outreach, and for a minimal cost, the education-based Friends of the Hepburn

Center After School Tutorial Enrichment Program (ASP) for students in grades Kindergarten through Middle School.

The ASP provides tutoring and remedial coaching to students Monday through Friday, and includes free transportation from Hallandale Elementary School and Gulfstream Middle School.

The Hepburn Center also hosts Spring Break and Summer Camps, and organizes and operates the Adopt-AFamily Program in the City for the Christmas and Chanukah holiday gift-

giving season.

The event will afford families and individuals an opportunity to interact with neighbors, police and learn about the services offered by your City. There will be tours of the Hepburn Center and plenty of games and free food.

Torch Run Comes To Hallandale Beach About 100 law enforcement officers and City employees from throughout Broward County turned out last Thursday morning in Hallandale Beach to carry the Special Olympic torch in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run from the Hallandale Beach City limit to the northern Broward County line in Deerfield Beach.

While breakfast is widely considered the most important meal of the day, it doesn’t have to be the most difficult to make. You

Cherry Almond Brunch Tart Ingredients: • 1 Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crust, softened as directed on box • 4 cups sliced almonds • 1 can (14 oz.) Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk • 6 tablespoons butter, softened • 1 teaspoon almond extract • 1 jar (12 oz.) Smucker’s® Orchard’s Finest® Michigan Red Tart Cherry Preserves • 1 container (8 oz.) mascarpone cheese

Step 1: Heat oven to 400 F. Unroll pie crust; place in ungreased 10inch tart pan with removable bottom. Press crust firmly against bottom and side of pan; trim excess crust. Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until crust is light golden brown.

Step 2: Meanwhile, reserve 1/4 cup of the almonds. Place remaining almonds in food processor. Cover; process until coarsely ground. In large bowl, beat sweetened condensed milk, butter, almond extract and 1/4 teaspoon salt on medium speed until creamy. Stir in ground nuts until well blended.

Step 3: Spread 3/4 cup of the preserves over bottom of partially baked crust. Carefully spread almond mixture over preserves, covering bottom of crust completely.

Step 4: Bake 20 to 30 minutes or until center is set and edges are golden brown. Remove to cooling rack; cool 15 minutes. Remove side of pan; cool 30 minutes.

Step 5: In small bowl, mix mascarpone cheese and remaining 1/4 cup preserves until well blended. Top individual servings of tart with mascarpone mixture and reserved 1/4 cup almonds. Serve warm or cool.
