A Cheesy Jewish Holiday Shavuot Can Still Be Celebrated, Even If You’re Home
By SIB Mayor George “Bud” Scholl
Residents of Sunny Isles Beach, Good news! I am pleased to report that progress is being made to achieve a June 1 opening of our beaches and pools. A lot of work has been put in to prepare for the beaches throughout Miami-Dade County to reopen. There have been several calls between the coastal cities, counties, public health officials, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, and his senior staff members. This past Sunday we participated in another call to review the draft beach reopening guidelines that the County has proposed. As I reported in the past, the City of Sunny Isles Beach does not control our beach. MiamiDade County holds the responsibility to manage the beaches within its boundaries, which was granted to the County by the State of Florida. The State has ultimate ownership of the beach, with the Governor having the final word. Mayor Gimenez indicated this past week that he was going to allow beaches to reopen on June 1 with all appropriate rules for the pandemic in place. In a separate message from our City Manager, we will convey the final rules and regulations for the use of the beach once they are Openings, Page 7A

Beware of Robocall, Phishing and Imposter Scams as Florida Reopens Attorney General Ashley Moody issued another Consumer Alert urging continued vigilance
At a unique crossroads between religion and cuisine, the Holiday of Shavuot, celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai some 3,332 years ago, has become a celebration of fine dairy cuisine as well. Shavuot is celebrated for two days, this year beginning at sundown on Thursday, May 28, 2020 and ending at nightfall of Saturday, May 30. 50 days after leaving Egypt on Passover, the Jewish people received the Torah from G-d at Mount Sinai on the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot literally means “weeks” and marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. Shavuot customs include all-night Torah study, listening to the recitation of the Ten Commandments, the reading of the Book of Ruth, eating dairy products and adorning the home with flowers. With the giving of the Torah, the Jews became obligated to observe the kosher laws. As the Torah was given on Shabbat, no cattle or poultry could be slaughtered, nor could we make sure that the animals insides were healthy and then properly cleaned out as is required in

Obstructive Sleep Apnea makes almost every medical condition worse and harder to control. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the most commonly undiagnosed common disease. Yet, hardly anyone is told to get tested and treated! I know, it happened to me. I had to figure it out on my own and figured out how to help you get through the system.
It was a daunting process finding the right doctors, getting tested, trying different treatments, and working through the insurance quagmire. It was in 1997, at a conference, that I was introduced to a dental mouthpiece, like a retainer, used in place of a CPAP machine for many patients. It is a person-
Please check on your loved ones living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Ask if their stimulus payments have been received. If they haven’t, ask the facility’s management if they are holding the benefits.
COVID-19 Consumer Alert Nursing Homes Can’t Claim Stimulus Payments & Robocall Scams Attorney General Ashley Moody has issued a Consumer Alert for Floridians with loved ones residing in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Reports of these facilities seizing residents’ stimulus payments are beginning to surface nationwide. According to the Federal Trade Commission, some facility operators are seizing the stimulus payments of residents on Medicaid - justifying the seizure by claiming the facility, not the individual, is entitled to the federal benefit. CARES Act payments are classified as a tax credit, not a federal benefit, and are allocated to individuals not the facilities entrusted to care for them. Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “This is disgraceful and completely unacceptable. As we have seen throughout this crisis, residents in these facilities are at a higher risk of suffering and dying from COVID-19—they
should not have to carry the additional burden of worrying about their stimulus money being taken by those entrusted with their care. The federal government allocated these funds to individuals during these unprecedented times. If these stimulus funds were meant for facility operators, they would have been earmarked as such. “Please check on your loved ones living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Ask if their stimulus payments have been received. If they haven’t, ask the facility’s management if they are holding the benefits. If they are, contact my office immediately.” said Attorney General Moody To contact the Florida Attorney General’s Office, call 1(866) 9NO-SCAM or visit MyFloridaLegal.com. Snoring Sounds Alarm for Deeper Health Problems By Howard J. Hoffman, DDS
Many people in South Florida realize that snoring affects their ability to get a quality night’s sleep, but most don’t know it could signal other serious health problems. While snoring can simply be a sign that the airway is partially blocked, loud and frequent snoring can indicate the presence of obstructive sleep apnea. At least 12 to 18 million U.S. adults are affected by this condition, which causes breathing to suddenly stop during sleep anywhere from 10 seconds to more than a minute, in some cases. It occurs when the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the
throat, blocking the upper airway. Numerous studies have shown that, if left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening condition that can increase the risk for serious health problems from congestive heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease to diabetes, obesity, depression and impotence. You Need To Know. You Are Not Alone. I would like to share with you, my experiences in getting help for my own sleep apnea problem. A problem that I didn’t know I had, nor was I seeking treatment for. I have learned so much
