Take Part In Art & Pop 2000 Tour Sunny Isles Beach Anniversary Celebrations Continue As part of the City Of Sunny Isles Beach’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, they would like to shed light on talented local artists. The Sunny Spaces Art Contest gives local artists the opportunity to have a lasting impact on our community. Artists will either paint or hand draw an original 8” x 8” piece, incorporating the theme of ‘A Sun In The Artwork.’ If selected, the artwork will be recreated in various locations around Sunny Isles Beach.

The Sunny Spaces Art Contest is open to anyone residing in the United States, you do not have to be a resident of Sunny Isles Beach. Artwork must be either painted or hand drawn to cover an 8” x 8” surface encompassing the theme of the “Sun.” Create the artwork in color. You may not use any copyrighted character and the artwork must be original and created 100% by the artist. Entries that do not conform to the entry guidelines or fail to provide the requested completed waiver form may be removed from consideration. Minors must ask their parents or legal guardian for permission to participate in the contest. Last month, the Hallandale Beach City Manager, Dr. Jeremy Earle appointed Michel Michel (pronounced Michael Michael) as the new Chief of the Hallandale Beach Police Department (HBPD).

Chief Michel has served the Hallandale Beach community for the last 20 years. His childhood, family life, and career are rooted in South Florida. Chief Michel served in the United States Navy, earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, and graduated from several prestigious command institutes, including the Southern Police Institute’s Command Officers Development Class 60, the Police Executive Research Forum’s (PERF) Senior Management Institute for Police, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Florida Leadership Academy Class 6.

Chief Michel began his career with the Hallandale Beach Police Department in 2002; during his tenure, he has served as a Patrol Officer, Marine Patrol Officer, and Detective. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, supervising Uniform Patrol and then the Traffic Unit. In 2011, Chief Michel was promoted to Captain, where he supervised the Community Involvement Unit (CIU), the Investigation Services Division (ISD), and Vice Intelli-

Great Mentors Create Great Leaders Hallandale Beach Is On A Positive Track Because of Astute Leadership

During our June 1st Meeting we had the Chamber full of guests for the swearing in of our new Chief of Police, Chief Michel Michel and other guests from South Florida and Israel. I will not be going into detail about Chief Michel since our lead editor is covering the story. I do need to share that as Mayor, I am thrilled that we have begun this new chapter in the City Of Hallandale Beach’s Police Department.

I have known and watched Chief Michel over the past 18 years. We joke that we grew up together in Hallandale Beach. Much of his training was under the leadership of Chief Tom McGill who was the epitome of Community Policing. The fact that Chief Michel learned from him and understands the impact of knowing and more importantly understanding our community is priceless.

Over the past two years plus, we regretfully have been what seems like, we are under siege with shootings and crime.

When I came back on the Dais, I was shocked that we had become so weak on Crime Fighting. The messaging or lack of unified messaging from the Dais had adversely impacted our Department and more importantly in my opinion created a sense of lawlessness. Please do not read into this as being against what I call “Boots On The Ground,” but why leadership is so important!

Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub ran on a platform to Fight Crime after being a victim of it herself in the Southwest Area.

She continually spoke about it on the Dais. I believe that when the Policies I have fought for in the past of sharing all Incident Reports in “Real Time” to the Commission were not being enforced by the previous Chief. This led to a false sense that it was really not that bad!

What was worse, was our youngest Commissioner, who was pushing a small

group to speak out against our Police Department. She was naïve to the fact that we worked tirelessly with many Residents in the area to get rid of the blatant Drug Dealing. These were not simply Marijuana deals, but with Crack and Cocaine. Chief McGill, our Federal Partners and unified Residents worked side by side on what was called Weed and Seed. Weeding out the Crime and establishing programs to benefit the Citizens.

I am very optimistic that Chief Michel is the person to continue the legacy of true Community Policing. Working with the Residents to Fight Crime and to keep our streets safe. In this uncertain time in our society, due to COVID-19 and the Economy, we need strong caring policing. As a Commission we need to ensure that our Officers are well equipped with all of the modern tools and training to protect our Citizens. We also need to send the message that our Officers are here to aid our Citizens in their most incomprehensible and vulnerable situations. I congratulate and thank Chief Michel for taking on this amazing duty.

City Manager, Dr. Jeremy Earle also deserves to be thanked for making the decision to hire Chief Michel. Sadly, he could not attend the Commission meeting due to his father’s illness. I read his heartfelt message into the record.

Commissioner Taub sponsored a proclamation in honor of Dr. Earle to recognize his hard work over the past year and a half as City Manager. His astute ability to lead our City and Staff through extremely tough financial territory has been remarkable. His professionalism, candor and transparency has been exactly what our City has needed to get us on a stable path.

During this presentation Dr. Earle was at home with his father who was in hospice. The following day Dr. Johnathan Earle passed away. While City Manager,

Dr. Earle is very private, I am hoping that he will not mind that I am sharing with our readers of his father’s accomplishments. I now understand where Dr. Earle gets his passion for Service and Community.

Dr. Earle completed his Ph.D. at the University of Florida in 1985 and joined the faculty of the Department of Agricultural & Biological Engineering in 1987. He was appointed Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the University of Florida College of Engineering in 1992.

This position was later upgraded to Associate Dean. He remained in this position until his retirement in December of 2007.

Dr. Earle was a leader, a pioneer and an innovator in Engineering Education who devoted his career to the success of students. As Associate Dean, he created the Engineering Student Services Center to provide Advising, Resources and Academic Support to Engineering Students. He is perhaps best known, though, for his dedication to increasing the retention and graduation rates of minority students in Engineering Disciplines. In 1993, he implemented the STEPUP Program (Successful Transition through Enhanced Preparation for Undergraduate Programs). STEPUP provides an intensive 6-week Residential Program for selected students and includes Peer Mentoring, Academic Preparation in Calculus, Chemistry and Engineering Design, as well as Industry Networking Opportunities. This Program is nationally recognized. From 2000 - 2001, he was responsible for the implementation of EFTP (Engineering Freshman Transition Program), which provided a NonResidential experience open to all Engineering Freshman, as well as the Engineering GatorTrax Math Excellence Program, which was designed to provide hands-on applications of Classroom Mathematics Concepts to Middle and

High School Students in the State of Florida. GatorTrax was so successful that the National Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi, modeled its K-12 Outreach Programs (MindSet) after GatorTrax. He also implemented the Gator Engineering K-12 Outreach Program that has brought over 10,000 students to the UF Campus to learn about Engineering.

His many Awards and Recognitions include: the Wolfson Faculty Award for Outstanding Service to Students at the University of Florida, a member of the National Executive Council of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, the SECME Global Vision Award and the Faculty of the Year Award. In 2007, at a Ceremony in the White House he received the National Science Foundation Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. Upon receiving this Award, he is quoted: “I was humbled by it because I didn’t do this work for the award — I was just thinking about how to make my students successful,” Earle said.

“For me the award is really a way of saying, ‘You made your students successful.’”

Words alone cannot describe Dr. Earle’s impact on our College. I, like many others, looked upon him as a mentor and role model. He was a wonderful colleague and a great and humble man. The Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council, hosted the official Progress Pride Flag Raising Ceremony

Celebrating Pride Month Hollywood Is Demonstrating Its Commitment Toward Progress & Equality In Celebration of Pride Month, the City of Hollywood, in partnership with the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council, hosted the official Progress Pride Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall last week.

Mayor Josh Levy and Council President Todd Delmay provided remarks, followed by Singer David Meulemans who performed “You Raise Me Up” a cappella while the Progress Pride Flag was being raised.

This year, in addition to the Progress Pride Flag, the “My Hollywood Pride Youth Tapestry” will hang in the 2nd floor lobby of City Hall for the month of June. The tapestry was created in January 2022 by youth who attended the My Hollywood Pride inaugural event. Each of the 18 fabric squares were thoughtfully created and personalized by youth to express who they are and how the event made them feel.

“Hollywood’s emergence as a municipal leader of LGBTQ+ equality has been remarkable. Hollywood was the first city in the state to fly the Progress Pride flag in 2020 and celebrated its first My Hollywood Pride in January of this year,” says Delmay. “And with the flag raising at City Hall again, we are unveiling for the public what we believe is the first of its kind in the state; a Pride Youth Tapestry made by local youth on the theme of what Pride means to them. In a year when youth have felt especially vulnerable, and a time when the most marginalized in our community need our support, I could not be prouder that Hollywood is demonstrating its commitment to work together toward progress and equality for everyone.”

The Progress Pride Flag, donated by the Council, will fly over Hollywood City Hall in June as a symbol of the open and

diverse community that is Hollywood. The Progress Pride Flag features the traditional rainbow colors, but also includes a chevron with black and brown to represent queer people of color, and pink, blue and white to represent those of trans and/or non-binary experience.

Hollywood Beach Sweep Join with other volunteers for a great cause every second Saturday of the month to collect litter and cigarette butts from the sandy beach. The next Hollywood Beach Sweep event is Saturday, June 11th - 7 to 11 a.m.

Volunteers are requested to meet at Charnow Park at Garfield Street and the Broadwalk, at 7 a.m. Please complete the registration form available on the City’s website (www.hollywoodfl.org - enter Beach Sweep Form in the search field) and children, ages 8 and older are welcome to participate when accompanied by an adult. Gloves and garbage bags will be provided to all volunteers along with safety instructions. Please dress appropriately, wear sunscreen and bring the completed registration form.

Don’t forget, plastic water bottles are prohibited on Hollywood Beach, so bring a reusable water bottle instead.

Dania After Dark: Art, Food and S.O.U.L. Are What’s In Store Dania After Dark (DAD), is a monthly street festival established in 2018 and presented by the Dania Beach CRA to create a sense of place and community space for Dania Beach residents, businesses and visitors to enjoy family-friendly entertainment in the heart of Downtown Dania Beach.

This unique event highlights the unique qualities of its host city, Dania Beach. The nighttime festival is held in the current City Hall compound and organized by the Dania Beach Community Redevelopment Agency. Mass Shooting From Page 1A Store in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people.

In 2018, a 19-year-old former student armed with a Gas Mask, Smoke Grenades, Magazines of Ammunition and an AR-15-Style Semi-Automatic Rifle opened fire on students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, leaving 17 people dead.

Ten years ago, 20-year-old Adam Lanza - wearing Body Armor and black clothing, armed with Military-Style Weapons opened fire on students and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, leaving 26 dead.

Prior to the shooting, Lanza reportedly spent his days “playing Violent Video Games amid posters showcasing Military Equipment.”

According to an FBI Report issued the day before the Uvalde shooting, these kinds of “Active Shooter Attacks” have doubled in recent years.

As expected in the wake of such tragedies, there has been a vocal outcry for enacting more strident Gun Control Measures, more Mental Health Checks and Heightened Security Measures.

Yet surely there’s more to these shootings than just easy access to Weapons and Mental Illness.

Ask yourself: Why do these Mass Shootings keep happening? Who are these shooters modeling themselves after?

Where are they finding the inspiration for their Weaponry and Tactics? Whose stance and techniques are they mirroring?

When you start to connect the dots, they lead right back to the American Police State and the War-Drenched, Violence-Imbued, Profit-Driven Military Industrial Complex, both of which continue to dominate, dictate and shape almost every aspect of our lives.

The United States is the number one consumer, exporter and perpetrator of Violence and Violent Weapons in the World.

Ten people were killed and another three wounded when a mass shooting erupted at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York Violence has become America’s calling card.

We are a Military Culture engaged in continuous Warfare.

We have been a Nation at War for most of our existence.

We are a Nation that makes a living from killing through Defense Contracts, Weapons Manufacturing and Endless Wars.

We are being fed a steady diet of Violence through our Entertainment, News, Sports and Politics.

It’s estimated that U.S. Military Intelligence Agencies (including the NSA) have influenced over 1,800 Movies and TV Shows.

Then there are the growing number of Violent Video Games, a number of which are engineered by or created for the Military as Recruitment Tools, which have accustomed players to Interactive War Play through Military Simulations and FirstPerson Shooter Scenarios. As Esther J. Cepeda writes for The

Washington Post, “Violent Video Games alone do not cause people to go off the rails, arm themselves and open fire on innocent people in Public Places. But there’s also no question that there is something wrong with a MultiBillion-Dollar Video Game Industry that sells to young men the ability to Virtually Assassinate a Foe as an escape from Real Life.”

The Media, eager to score Higher Ratings, has been equally complicit in making (Real) War more palatable to the Public by packaging it as TV Friendly. The Military has also been firmly entrenched in the Nation’s Sports Spectacles, having CoOpted Football, Basketball, even NASCAR, “tying the Symbols of Sports with the Symbols of War.” This is how you acclimate a population to War. This is how you cultivate loyalty to a War Machine.

This is how you sustain the Nation’s Appetite for War. Do you want to stop Gun

Control Measures, widespread Mental Health Screening of the General Population and greater scrutiny of Military Veterans, more threat assessments and Behavioral Sensing Warnings, more CCTV Cameras with Facial Recognition Capabilities, more “See Something, Say Something” Programs aimed at turning Americans into snitches and spies, more Metal Detectors and Whole-Body Imaging Devices at Soft Targets, more Roaming Squads of Militarized Police empowered to do Random Bag Searches, more Fusion Centers to Centralize and Disseminate Information to Law Enforcement Agencies, and more Surveillance of what Americans say and do, where they go, what they buy and how they spend their time.

Yet as I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, all of these measures play into the Government’s hands by locking down the Nation without doing anything to address the underlying causes of this madness.

What we need is a thoughtful, measured, Apolitical Response to these Shootings that takes aim at the Violence plaguing our Nation by lowering the levels of Violence here and abroad, whether it’s Violence we export to other countries, Violence we glorify in Entertainment, or Violence we revel in when it’s leveled at our So-Called Enemies, Politically or otherwise.

Inflation: It’s Impacting Summer Travel Decisions More Than COVID-19 The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) recently conducted a Survey of 2,210 Adults, with some surprising results.

More than two years into the Pandemic, Americans report that Gas Prices and Inflation will Impact their Summer Travel Decisions more than Concerns about COVID-19, according to a New Survey Conducted by Morning Consult and Commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

Memorial Day Weekend marked the Start of the Summer Travel Season, a traditionally busy time for the Hotel Industry.

This year, nearly seven in ten Americans (69%) Reported being likely to travel this Summer, with 60% saying they are likely to take more Vacations this year compared to 2020-21.

New concerns about Gas prices and Inflation, however, are impacting Americans’ Travel Plans in a variety of ways. Majorities say they are likely to take fewer Leisure Trips (57%) and Shorter Trips (54%) due to Current Gas Prices, while 44% are likely to postpone Trips and 33% are likely to Cancel with no plans to reschedule. 82% say Gas Prices will have

at least some Impact on their Travel Destination(s).

But just as COVID’s Negative Impact on Travel is starting to wane, a new set of challenges is emerging in the form of Historic Inflation and Record High Gas Prices.
