Over 1 In 4 Floridians Met Their Neighbor For The First Time During Lockdown It seems staying home has had a positive influence on neighborly relationships across the nation, as over 1 in 4 (28%) Floridians admit the first time they met their neighbor was during lockdown.

We are told to ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself’ but what if you have no idea who your nextdoor neighbor is? Having to remain indoors during lockdown means getting creative when communicating with family and friends, such as via video calling apps. However, it is also the perfect opportunity to get to know the person or people who live in the home next to you, considering you are both likely to be there more often than usual. If your paths didn’t cross before due to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, they are bound to have done so during lockdown.

BusinessElectric.com, online electricity comparison and resource site, conducted a survey of 4,000 Americans to find out how many had their first interaction with their neighbor ever during lockdown period. It seems staying home has had a positive influence on neighborly relationships across the nation, as over 1 in 4 (28%) Floridians admit the first time they met their neighbor was during lockdown!

This was above the national average of 20%.

A friend in need… While lockdown appears to have improved our communication with our loved ones – and neighbors – there is no doubt about the economic hardship many are facing during this time. It seems we are a country full of good Samaritans as the average American revealed they would lend their neighbor in need a significant $167. Floridians would lend $179.65 to their neighbor.

Conversely, the survey also found that over 1 in 10 (15%) respondents say they would, in fact, reach out to their neighbor for financial help in desperate times.

A promising, heartwarming statistic to emerge from this study was that a majority of Americans are even generous enough to house a neighbor in need – 77% say they would volunteer to temporarily house their neighbor if they had nowhere Neighbor, Page 7A

Collection Sites COVID-19 Testing Is Easily Available Broward County, the Florida Department of Health in Broward, American Medical Response and Century Ambulance Services offer a mobile/in-home testing program.

This service is for homebound elderly or disabled individuals

who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and cannot leave their homes to access a drive-up or walk-up test location.

Initial hours of operation will be from 9AM - Noon, and 1PM 4PM, Monday through Friday.

AMR and CAS will each collect

Message from the City of Sunny Isles Beach Mayor

June marked the unofficial beginning of summer here in Florida, and this year, it’s looking quite different than usual. Even though we are still encouraged to stay home as much as possible to slow the spread of the Coronavirus, there are still a multitude of reasons and ways we can celebrate the new season.

Many of our young residents are graduating this month from elementary, middle and high school as well as undergraduate and graduate programs. Though your ceremonies may be smaller and online, this is still an exciting time to commemorate your success with your family. As you end one chapter, a new one is right on the horizon just teeming with new opportunities.

June 1 also was the start of hurricane season. While you prepare your homes, supply kits and emergency plans, the City is doing the same. We have three portable pumps ready to deploy

With select parks open, we know that our residents can safely venture outside to get active and play. in case of flooding during strong storms, our trees have been trimmed, and we have a sandbag program in place to distribute to residents in the event of a storm.

We also procured several contracts to accelerate the hurricane recovery process including debris removal contracts and debris monitoring in the event we should need them.

Though summer can bring some stormy weather, it is also the perfect time to get outside and connect with nature when the sky is clear and the sun is

out. With select parks open, we know that our residents can safely venture outside to get active and play. You might not score a winning goal in a soccer game with all your teammates and playgrounds closed to your young ones for a little while longer, but you can still make the best of this time.

Take this summer to learn a new skill, reconnect with your family, or study a new subject.

There are many ways to grow personally from your own home.

The City is regularly posting new recreation classes and programs

on our social media pages and SIBTV that you can do right from your living room. And while you’re on your computer, don’t forget to fill out the census! It takes no more than five minutes and you can do it all online at 2020census.gov. Without your input, the City may be left out of millions in future state and federal funds. Remember, we all count; homeowners, renters, anyone residing in Sunny Isles Beach as of April 1, 2020.

Even though we are separated, we can still find connections. I know the last few

months have been difficult.

Some of us have been tested in ways we never thought imaginable. And as we see more reopenings across the City and County, it might seem natural to lower your guard. We have been fortunate enough to have a low number of reported cases in Sunny Isles Beach, and that is largely due to our residents following the stay-at-home order, social distancing, and CDC guidelines. Let’s continue to keep our count down.

As I have said before, there is no one size fits all solution during a time like this. I appreciate the cooperation, kindness and respect for each other that I have seen from most of our residents throughout this challenging time.

There is still plenty to do while wearing your mask and keeping that six feet of distance between others.

I hope everyone finds enjoyment this summer while continuing to stay safe.

The Temperature’s Rising: Returning Outdoors, Breathing Fresh Air, Is Best Taken In Baby Steps

As we enter the summer months, the weather begins to invite us outdoors. Families and friends having fun in the sun can be seen far and wide. The fragrance of sunscreen has returned to the air, and peals of laughter from children playing games reach my ears. Summer promises to be a much sought after break from the recent quarantine we have all undergone.

My name is Tracy Renee Lee. I am a Certified Grief Counselor (GC-C), Funeral Director (FDIC), published author, syndicated columnist, and co-founder of the “Mikey Joe Children’s Memorial” and Heaven Sent, Corp. I write books, weekly bereavement articles, and Grief BRIEFs related to understanding and coping with grief.

It is my life’s work to comfort the bereaved and help them live on. I, for one, am anxious to be

done with quarantine. I am sure you are too. I do, however, want to offer a word of caution as we begin our summer season. Most of us have been shut in for quite some time. It is possible that our mental health, as well as our physical health, has deteriorated.

For several months, we have sat indoors with temperature controlled forced air blowing incessantly upon us. Most of us have experienced very little sunlight beaming down, kissing our skin, and producing the much-needed vitamin D we all need so desperately.

Returning outdoors, breathing fresh air, and reclaiming movement will be good for our bodies, minds, and souls. One should be aware, however, that there are times when reclamation is best taken in baby steps. Already, as the temperature begins to climb, and more families choose graveside services (Since i’m a Funeral

Director) to enjoy being out in the fresh air, I have noticed a substantial increase in the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and stroke. Profuse sweating, fainting, and dehydration are making their appearances in the cemeteries early this year.

As a funeral director, I implore you to be very aware that although you may be excited to be outside again, the consequences of failing to reacquaint yourself with summer elements and physical exertion, in a controlled and cautious manner, have the potential to be very dangerous. At the beginning of quarantine, you may have been in top-notch shape. You may have even worked out daily during the entire time. Nevertheless, the fact remains that even under the best of conditioning you have remained sheltered from the elements. Reintroduction into the elements should be approached

Please do not be the next person lying on my embalming table, or next set of cremains that I must hand over to a grieving family simply because you were overly anxious to be back outside again. Take the necessary precautions to protect your health and your life. Keep yourself well hydrated, stand, or sit in the shade, wear loose lightweight clothing, and just so you know, there is nothing wrong with a makeshift paper fan to keep yourself cool. Observing these simple suggestions, and a few best practices may just keep you healthy enough to survive the summer and several more to come.

As you enjoy your time in the sun, please remember these words from me to you.

“You are important, and even though I may not know you, your life matters to me, and most cer-

tainly to those who know and love you. Moreover, whether you believe it or not, there is a funeral director nearby who would much rather see you standing vertically, enjoying your summer, rather than lying horizontally (with cold skin) on their embalming table.

COVID-19 in Florida, please call the Florida Department of Health at 1-866-779-6121. Free testing for COVID-19 is being offered at numerous drive-up or walk-in sites. For medical emergencies, call 911 and notify the dispatch personnel that you may have COVID-19.

Eviction Prevention, Rent and Utility Assistance for City of Hollywood Residents The City of Hollywood has entered into an agreement with HOPE South Florida to provide Eviction Prevention/Rental and Utility Assistance for City of Hollywood residents that have been affected by the COVID-19 Health Crisis. Funding for the program is provided by State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) Funds.

Beginning on Thursday, June 25th, eligible Hollywood residents may apply for a grant of up to $5,000 for three month’s rent.

Eligibility requirements are as follows: 1. A tenant beneficiary(s) must be a United States Citizen or legal resident, eligible to receive federal assistance as defined in Title 8 of the U.S.C. and 24 CFR Section 570.613.

2. The tenant beneficiary’s total household income must not exceed 80% Area median Income (AMI), adjusted for family size, at the time of application.

Our City Continues To Move Forward

Dear readers, I owe you an apology. In last week’s article when I wrote about the horrible murder of George Floyd I errored when I, “wrote while officers idly stood by.” One stood by and the other two participated. They all are being prosecuted for this heinous crime.

On Friday night there was a protest that was sponsored by Blessed Broward with Faith in Florida. Our pastors and ministers joined to bring a peaceful protest on Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. and Hallandale Beach Blvd.

Prayers and speeches were given in memory of the many lives lost by police brutality.

Those that could took a knee until the horrible rains came.

Our country is still on a trajectory that is alarming. Those that want to agitate and those doubling down on racism need to be called out. The movement to put Death to Racism is here, but we need to do it peacefully.

Talladega is yet another horrible display of white supremacist, KKK and those that have an ancient way of thinking. It is great to see their voices being drowned out by those that stand for peace and love. It is even better to see that law enforcement is looking to find the perpetrators of the hate crime.

At our most recent meeting I presented a proclamation sponsored by Commissioner Taub in memory of George Floyd. In

addition, I sponsored a resolution condemning all violence against any individual in this county based on race, color, or national origin. Commissioner Taub also brought up a letter for us to sign onto that spoke of actions and words that the former commission displayed. I was not present at the meetings in reference but agreed to sign on to her letter.

Others wanted the apology language she wrote changed, so I am not certain if everyone signed on.

We all need to speak out against all forms of hatred violence and disrespectful treatment that degrades human life.

It should and will not be tolerated in our city.

While this topic is important, we are still facing the pandemic. The number of cases as predicted are going up.

Frankly, this is not just due to more people being tested.

For our leaders to discuss the increase as because of more testing is misinforming the public. The percentage of positive tests are going up. The hospitalizations are going up. We need everyone to remain vigilant. The other alarming factor is the average age has lowered from aver-

age of 65 to 35.

On Monday I was on a countywide mayor’s conference call to discuss the enforcement of wearing masks. Last Wednesday I asked the commission to support my motion to require that masks be mandatory in all enclosed common areas in multifamily apartments and condominiums. Obviously, this does

not mean while working out, playing tennis or swimming.

Please remember though if you chose these activities you are doing them at your own risk.

Masks are not an invasion of Freedom. Cities’ have a duty to protect the public. Just as in hurricanes we enact emergency

rules that are required to be followed. The only thing we cannot do is go into you home and force you to leave. This is simply a misguided notion and putting everyone at risk. Those not wearing masks are simply showing their disregard for the greater good.

It is a scientific fact that masks help prevent the spread.

Our city will be enforcing our mask rule. Those not following the safety declaration will be given a warning, civil citation and then a $500 fine. We are asking that security guards, board of directors and residents report noncompliance by calling 311 or 954-4571390, the city’s hotline. I have been suggesting that you provide names and or apartment numbers when you call.

The entire county as of Wednesday is taking measures to ensure compliance. As of Monday, there was not a discussion of rolling back any of the openings. We need to make sure we open right. Many of our establishment have been open and many of them are enforcing all the guidelines. The businesses that are not enforcing the

rules will be noticed, cited and fined. They also risk being closed.

Our city continues to move forward. We are partially open, the building department, finance, Hepburn Center Camp is open, and we continue to partner with Meals on Wheels to make sure our seniors do not go hungry. We encourage our residents to visit our city’s website www.cohb.gov for information. Our staff has been working hard updating it and making as user friendly as possible.

As of the end of this month our city will be lifting the moratorium on utility shut offs. Staff is working on evaluating the data to ensure that these programs are not being exploited and funds are going to those truly in need.

We remain sensitive that there are many people still not working. Our staff at the Hallandale Beach CRA (954-787-2055) is available to help and county staff at 211 has information on other assistance programs available.

Reemployment Assistance (formerly Unemployment Compensation): Reemployment Assistance benefits (formerly Unemployment Compensation) are available to Floridians whose employment has been negatively impacted as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19), and is available for workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own. In Florida, a maximum of $275 a week is typically available for a

maximum of 26 weeks. The CARES Act may provide additional assistance due to the current pandemic.

According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, if you were denied benefits or if you applied on or before April 4, you should reapply online at www.FloridaJobs.org (regardless of whether you have received a response from the department).

This includes gig workers, independent contractors, the self-employed, people who just moved to Florida, or almost anyone else who wouldn’t normally be eligible for state benefits.

If you applied on or after April 5, the state will already be able to process your claim.

How can I apply?
