This may be the most important City election in years

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - As election season heats up around the nation, we also have elections here in Hallandale Beach. As of Friday June 24th I was honored and humbled to find out that I did not have anyone file to run against me in this election. After the extremely negative campaign that ran against me over four years ago, I have been preparing and working hard to run. It is wonderful to be able to focus on working for you and continuing with the progress that we have made.

There are many important issues and projects taking place that need to be kept on course; Parks Go Bonds, FEMA flooding project in the southwest, implementation of Form Base Codes along the rest of Hallandale Beach Boulevard, our Basis of Design for complete streets and infrastructure and redevelopment efforts along Federal Highway, Dixie Corridor and Pembroke Road.

Our success as a City has been validated through our redevelopment efforts, bond rating and improved property values. We are on a great track but some commissioners would like to dismantle our progress.

Underhanded campaigning has already begun. It is like Deja Vu all over. Attacks on staffs, continued disruption at meetings and complaints about the CRA. Our City deserves

better, so let’s stop the negativity in its tracks.

This year, our elections will be for seats 3 and 4.

Seat 3 is held by Vice Mayor Bill Julian who has worked hard for our City and you, our residents. In addition to his work on the commission, he continues to volunteer to help the food pantry, our local schools and other charities. An unknown woman who has been put up by two of our commissioners to run against your Vice Mayor Julian has filed to run. In the old days, this would be called carpet bagging. This is when a nonresident or new resident who seeks private gain from an area often by meddling in its business or politics. We need leaders that know our City and what our residents want.

She along with a current Commissioner are already being investigated for using City Hall as if it was a campaign office.

Our residents deserve better. For security purposes, our back work spaces are for employee use only. These resources are for City purposes only and by law, not to be used for anything else, especially campaigning and private gain.

In the other race for Seat 4 former Commissioner Alex Lewy, Anne Hennigson who serves on our Beautification Board and Commissioner Lazarow have filed. Commissioner Lazrow only won a 4-year seat by one vote in the 2012 nasty

campaign cycle. At that time, Commissioner Alex Lewy who is truly dedicated to public service decided to run for higher office. He began his race for the state house and then was offered a position at AIPAC, American Israeli Political Action Committee. He had to give up running for office since the position precluded him being an elected official. He has decided to come back to what he loves, working as a public servant. Our City would be fortunate to have him.

I encourage our residents to get involved with all the races, not just the national campaign. Too many voters come to the polls and cast one vote and leave. There will be an August primary too! All the local races have a daily impact on your quality of life. Whether it is City, county or state.

There will also be referendum questions on the November ballot on state and county issues. Over the next weeks, I will cover these proposals.

We have plenty going on right here in the city.

Two very important road projects are taking place.

A1A sidewalk project is underway. This is the final phase of the overall road rehabilitation, resurfacing and safety project. Over the next months until April 2nd, the outside lanes will be closed to replace the old sidewalk with decorative walkways and add decorative lighting. There will not be any full lane closures.

I have been asked by many residents if we are painting the bridge. The last time it was painted, I agreed with many residents the color was a terrible. It has since faded, however the bridge is still three different colors. The commission did not want to budget for painting even though the bridge was not ever really fully painted properly. Now that all work will be done, it is time. I have already asked publicly that this project be put on the upcoming budget.

Over the past year, we found out that another building was going to be built at the base of the bridge on the Hollywood side. As an adjacent City, we had the right to weigh in on the project just like when the Hyde building in Hollywood was going up.

When we heard about Hyde Hotel Condo, we filed a suit and received as a settlement contribution for beach cleaning.

This time, I had asked and we received a developer contribution for $200,000 to go towards the costs to repaint the bridge and a commitment to work on the signalization at the bridge. No color has been decided, but there has been a suggestion of beige or beige with light blue.

The other project is the removal of the merged lane heading east and the left turns at the railroad crossing. Many people may be happy, but the business owners are furious. Some have already reported a 40% drop in

business. This is why I voted no in the past and still do not think we should have changed the pattern. It was counterintuitive, but the merge did help move more vehicles.

It was not the best alternative, but the no lefts are creating a different problem, more cut through traffic, access issues and safety. FDOT has committed to better signage, but we are still not certain what can or cannot be done.

As we all get ready for the holiday weekend, I want to wish all of our residents a Happy 4th of

“It’s the society that we live in,” said Broward County fireman Keith Miller. “I have spent the past six months talking about the safety of fireworks for everyone - and not just kids.”

Miller, who lives in Hallandale Beach, has seen first hand how things can go bad - just like that. He is one person who can speak from experience and having to transport and treat those who have lost fingers and eyesight.

The end result for Pierre-Paul was the loss of a finger and damage to his hand. While he returned to the football field last season, the money that it cost him was certainly not worth trying to be the entertainer. His life could have ended that day.

“You know the crazy thing about this is parents or guardians seem to really not grasp the danger of shooting these explosives off without any supervision,” Miller pointed out. “I can only tell you this, from years of shooting off fireworks or seeing the aftermath of what can happen, you can never, ever trust that an explosive will perform the way you believe they will.”

Just like so many other things that we are all trying to tell our friends and family members, which often falls on deaf ears, igniting anything with fire will always be dangerous and unpredictable.

Forty-seven of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia allow legal “consumer” fireworks for the Fourth of July. The definition of consumer fireworks varies from state to state, but can include everything from cone fountains to roman candles to multiple tube “cake” devices to sparklers. Before using fireworks, find out what’s legal in your state by checking the state law summary for your state.

Condominium owners from Miami to Fort Lauderdale converged on the Cultural Community Center Monday evening for the second Hallandale Beach Police Let’s Talk forum on Condominium Law. Making this a memorable and tasty Fourth of July There’s nothing like firing up the grill for chicken, shrimp, salmon and lamb Shrimp Skewers With Dill and Feta Sauce 1/2 cup crumbled Feta (2 ounces) 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill 5 tablespoons olive oil kosher salt and black pepper 16 peeled and deveined large shrimp (about 1 pound)

In a bowl, combine the Feta, dill, 4 tablespoons of the oil, and a teaspoon of pepper.

Thread the shrimp onto skewers; brush with the remaining tablespoon of the oil and season with ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. Grill over medium-high heat until opaque, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Drizzle with the sauce.

Grilled Mediterranean Vegetables 2 cups couscous 6 zucchini and/or yellow squash (about 2 1⁄2 pounds total), sliced 1⁄4 inch thick 1 large eggplant (about 1 pound), sliced 1⁄4 inch thick 1quart cherry tomatoes (preferably on the vine) 2 bunches scallions, trimmed 1/2cup olive oil kosher salt and black pepper Spiced Chili Oil or store-bought harissa (North African chili sauce, found in the international aisle)

Prepare the couscous according to the package directions. Meanwhile, heat grill to medium. In a large bowl, toss the zucchini, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, and scallions with the olive oil, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper.

Working in batches if necessary, grill the vegetables, covered, turning occasionally, until tender, 4 to 6 minutes for the eggplant and squash and 1 to 2 minutes for the tomatoes and scallions. Serve with the couscous and Spiced Chili Oil, for drizzling.

Grilled Buttermilk Chicken 1 1/2 cups buttermilk 8 cloves garlic, chopped

1 tablespoon paprika, kosher salt and black pepper 6 pounds bone-in chicken pieces

In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine the buttermilk, garlic, paprika, 1½ teaspoons salt, and ¾ teaspoon pepper.

Divide the buttermilk mixture and chicken between 2 large resealable plastic bags. Let marinate in the refrigerator, turning the bags occasionally, for at least 1 hour and up to overnight.

Heat grill to medium-low. Remove the chicken from the marinade (discard the marinade) and grill, covered, turning occasionally, until cooked through, 30 to 40 minutes.

Lemony Grilled Lamb Kebabs and Vegetables 3 1/2 pounds lamb top round or boneless leg, cut into 1 1⁄2-inch pieces 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon dried oregano kosher salt and black pepper 4 bell peppers, seeded and cut into 2-inch-wide strips 2 medium red onions, each cut into 6 wedges (root ends left intact) 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice, plus lemon wedges for serving

Soak 16 wooden skewers in water. Heat grill to medium-high.

Thread the lamb onto the skewers. Brush with 1 tablespoon of the oil and season with the oregano, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper.

In a large bowl, toss the bell peppers and onions with the remaining 2 tablespoons oil, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper.

Grill the lamb and vegetables, turning frequently and brushing with the lemon juice, until the lamb is mediumrare and the vegetables are tender, 8 to 10 minutes.

Cedar-Plank Salmon 1 2-pound salmon fillet, skin on 1 cedar plank, soaked in water 20 minutes 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Preheat a gas grill to high; adjust to medium low after 15 minutes. (If cooking over charcoal, allow the coals to burn until they are covered with white ash.)

Place the salmon skin-side down on the cedar plank.

Combine the brown sugar, oil, thyme, and cayenne in a bowl. Brush over the salmon.

Place the planked salmon on the grilling grate and cook, with the grill covered, until mostly cooked through but still slightly pink in the middle, about 40 minutes.

Respecting the stars and stripes: American flag etiquette The American Legion has played an important role in establishing the standards of flag etiquette since before the passing of the first national codes in 1923 (BPT) - Summers are packed with outdoor activities, barbecues and patriotic celebrations. While the American flag is often an important part of these celebrations, many of us have questions about how to properly care for and display it.

"Flag etiquette can be confusing," says Mary "Dubbie" Buckler, executive director and national secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary. "Many Americans want to show patriotism, but do not know the standards of respect and traditions associated with flag flying."

The American Legion Auxiliary, the world's largest women's patriotic organization, helps to advance the mission of The American Legion, the nation's largest veteran's service organization, to provide service to veterans, military and their families.

The American Legion has played an important role in establishing the standards of flag etiquette since before the passing of the first national codes

in 1923, and has worked diligently to uphold these historical standards.

Today, much of flag etiquette can be found in the Flag Code, official national rules regarding the American flag.

"The American flag is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated," Buckler says.

"The American Legion Auxiliary is passionate about educating the public so they can do so with proper respect for the freedom and sacrifices it represents."

Buckler shares the following guidelines for using, displaying and caring for the American flag.

Hoisting and lowering of the flag • The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

• The flag of the United States of America is saluted, or acknowledged by placing a hand over your heart, as it is hoisted and lowered.

• When lowered, the flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor,

water or merchandise.

Manner of displaying the flag • The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open.

• When a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

• The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an allweather flag is displayed.

• The flag should be displayed vertically, whether indoors or out, and suspended so that its folds fall free as though the flag were staffed.

• When displayed in a window of a home or a place of business, the flag should be displayed in the same way; that is, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.

Storing and disposing of the flag • The Flag Code does not require any specific method of storage, how-

ever, over time it has become tradition to fold the flag into a triangular shape like that of a threecorner hat, with only the blue union showing.

• When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. The American Legion frequently conducts flag retirement ceremonies, often on Flag Day, which was held on June 14.

Flag etiquette was established to honor and pay tribute to our nation

and its history. As such, certain uses of the American flag are considered disrespectful. The flag should never be: • Displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

• Used as a drapery or for any other decoration.

• Carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

• Used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying or delivering anything.

• The flag should never be used as apparel, bedding or drapery.

• Festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.

Standing tall as an emblem of justice, perseverance, valor and honor, the American flag is an intricate part of what makes citizens proud to be American. As summer rays shine again and the flag takes its spotlight, it is important to educate yourself and others to show respect for the deep history and sacrifices this national symbol represents.

(BPT) - The sunny days of summer are here and school may be out, but your family is still as active and busy as ever. It's easy to get caught up in a hectic schedule of activities, but don't let the summer hustle keep you from a healthy lifestyle. Enjoying the summer is about balance and planning. These tips will help your family stay happy, healthy and ready to tackle anything the summer months throw your way.

1. Fuel up with breakfast Set the tone for the rest of your day with a good-foryou breakfast. A complete breakfast gives you and your family the energy needed to take on the busy summer schedule. There are plenty of easy breakfast recipes that let you eat while you're running out the door. Try peanut butter or avocado on toast, hard boiled eggs or a fruit smoothie for a quick, satisfying meal.

2. Set a summer schedule Create a master calendar to hang up in your kitchen.

This should include everyone's daily activities for the summer so nothing is forgotten. Take a look at the calendar at the beginning of each week to get a sense of what's to come.

3. Remain active Encourage your kids to get outside by planning a weekly outdoor activity as a family. From hiking, biking, a game of tag, skating and swimming, find something your family loves doing together. You can also get some extra steps in by taking an after-dinner walk around the block each night.

4. Snack healthy Kids love to snack, especially when they're home for the summer. Another popular state park, Palo Duro Canyon, cuts through the heart of the Texas Panhandle just south of Amarillo and is nicknamed the Grand Canyon of Texas. At roughly 60 miles long, up to 20 miles wide and around 266 yards deep, it is the second largest canyon in the country.

Further South in the Texas Hill Country, Enchanted Rock is an ancient pink granite dome that has attracted visitors for thousands of years. A variety of outdoor activities are sure to keep visitors busy, including hiking, camping, rock climbing, birding, geo-

caching and stargazing.

In fact, Enchanted Rock is one of two Texas state parks designated as an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association.

Want to make a splash? Take a swim in one of Austin's swimming holes. Barton Springs Pool is one of Austin's famous landmarks and easily the most popular swimming hole in the city.

Spring fed, Barton Springs Pool is over three acres and remains 70 degrees year round.

Another famous swimming hole, Hamilton Pool, was created thousands of years ago when an underground river collapsed creating the sunken grotto. With a 50foot waterfall spilling from an outcropping of limestone into the jade green pool, it is a site to behold.

South of Austin in New Braunfels, Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort has been named the best water park in the nation for 17 years. With tube chutes, water coasters, a sea creature cove, lazy rivers and more, visitors of all ages will have a blast at an affordable price.

Not near New Braunfels? Don't worry! There's plenty of fun to be had in Arlington at one of the biggest theme parks in the state, Six Flags Over Texas. Its claim to fame is The Texas Giant, while the kids will enjoy Bugs Bunny Boomtown.

Across the street, more than 3 million gallons of water await at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. In San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas offers a variety of musical performances and shows in addition to rides. The park is home to Batman: The Ride, a new world class 4D Free Fly Coaster that thrusts riders into an immersive, high-speed Gotham City adventure.

portant theme park of all in the state of Texas is Morgan's Wonderland.

Dr. Ron: Senator, you’ve been accused of a unique form of voter manipulation. In the upcoming senatorial election, you are running on the Democratic platform: Your wife Clara is the republican candidate, and your son Edgar is the independent nominee. Considering the Stonewall family has identical voting records, doesn’t this virtually leave the voters no choice at all?

Senator Stonewall: Abdul, I’m glad you asked me that question. The war in Iraq has left the American public divided on many issues. That’s why if all of us don’t use our vote, we all don’t win.

Dr. Ron: Senator, it appears that you didn’t understand the question. Aren’t you hijacking the election by leaving the voters no ideological choice….By the way, my name’s Ron, not Abdul.

The 'silent' liver disease: A new public health concern for the 21st Century is important

Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a growing epidemic associated with diabetes and obesity (BPT) - By the time you finish reading this article, 14 American adults will have been newly diagnosed with diabetes. Thirty-three percent of Americans are obese, and by 2030, this rate is expected to rise to 50 percent. Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a growing epidemic associated with diabetes and obesity. NAFLD is a chronic liver disease characterized by the build-up of extra fat in the liver cells that is not caused by alcohol use. While it is normal for the liver to contain some fat, certain people accumulate extra fat. Left untreated, the accumulation of fat in the liver can progress to a more severe form of NAFLD called Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH).

NASH is fatty liver with inflammation (tissue injury). Over time, the buildup of fat in the liver causes the liver cells to become damaged. In some patients, this eventually leads to liver fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis (severe scarring), which results in other health complications, including liver failure, liver cancer and even death. The exact cause of NASH is unknown, but known risk factors include type 2 diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

NASH has become known as the "silent" liver disease. Many people with risk factors likely have NASH but are unaware because they may experience minimal to no symptoms. NASH can progress for years or decades undiagnosed. "NASH is an underappreciated, yet serious health concern that warrants more public attention," says Dr. Stephen Harrison, one of the world's leading experts studying NASH. "If you suspect you might have NASH, it's important to speak with a healthcare provider about your options for managing the condition."

Here are some facts about NASH 1. As the rates of diabetes and obesity continue to climb, the incidence of NASH will rise, as well.

2. More than 10 percent of the global adult population is estimated to be living with NASH. 3. At least one-third of Americans are estimated to have NAFLD and approximately 6 million have progressed to NASH. 4. Of the more than 400 million obese adults worldwide, approximately 75 percent are likely to have NAFLD and up to 20 percent have progressed to NASH. 5. By 2020, NASH is expected to become the leading cause for liver transplantations in the U.S.

Diagnosis In many patients NASH can exist with no symptoms and normal blood tests. If you have diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, and/or high blood pressure, you may have NASH and should talk to your doctor and request further evaluation. Your doctor may order special tests and a liver biopsy to diagnose NASH and the amount of liver scarring.

Melt butter in 12-inch skillet until sizzling; add onions and mushrooms.

Cook, stirring occasionally, over medium heat until vegetables are softened.

Add spinach leaves; continue cooking, turning spinach often, 4-5 minutes or until spinach is wilted. Add whipping cream, garlic, salt and pepper; continue cooking 1 minute.Add tomato, 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese and basil.Spread mixture over partially cooked potatoes; sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese.Using a spoon, make an indentation in center of mixture in each baking dish.Crack 1 egg into each indentation.

Bake 18-20 minutes or until yolks are set or yolk temperature reaches 160°F.
