Healthy Improvements Planned For Hollywood FDOT has broken ground on a Multimillion dollar project The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is investing over $300 million to create safer, healthier communities in Broward County. In partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the MPO is enhancing bicycle, pedestrian, and public transportation access. As part of the latest MPO projects in the City of Hollywood, FDOT has broken ground on a $3,049,774 million dollar Mobility Improvement Project that includes many healthy additions for the community. The FDOT will be installing bike lanes on Hollywood Boulevard and Park Road, and adding shared lane pavement markings along 35th Ave, Polk Street, Rainbow Drive, Circle Drive, and Van Buren Street. In addition, they will be installing sidewalks along Fillmore Street, Hollywood Boulevard, and the intersection of Polk Street and Van Buren at 24th Avenue, plus adding mid-block crossing on Hollywood Boulevard, east of 28th Avenue. While the project is underway, they will be relocating existing water main lines on the north side of Hollywood Boulevard, and adding french drains on Hollywood Boulevard between Academy Circle and 35th Avenue, and on Park Road between Washington Street and Johnson Street. Benefits of Building Bicycle & Walking Infrastructure Bikeways and walkways make places more valuable. By mapping real estate transactions, researchers have been able to show that bike facilities can have positive, statistically significant impacts on home values. A study of home values in Indianapolis, Ind. measured the impact of the trail on property values. Given two identical houses, with the same number of square feet, bathrooms, bedrooms, and comparable garages and porches would sell for an average of 11 percent more. Bikeways help companies attract talent. Several recent studies have shown that younger people are increasingly disenchanted with driving. The percentage of people age 16 to 24 with a driver’s license is lower than at any point since 1963. And among people 16 to 34, bike trips have increased 24 percent. Bike commuters are healthier and more productive. According to a 2003 study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “workplace physical activity programs can reduce shortterm sick leave by six to 32 percent, reduce health care costs Hollywood, Page 7A

LUNAR LANDING LESSONS

What Can We Learn From The Space Race By Marylynne Newmark

As I sat glued to the TV, feeding a Cheerios snack to my 5-month old, the miracle of the space age was about to become a reality. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were landing on the moon. Much else had dominated the news that year… the Beatles’ last performance on the roof of Apple records… Woodstock…the Charles Manson murders…. Chappaquiddick ….introduction of the microprocessor, ATMs … and…woefully, a Soviet submarine base spotted in Cuba. The average income in 1969 was $8,550. The average cost of a home was $15.500 and gasoline was 35 cents a gallon. Although Martin Luther King had been tragically assassinated the year before, the Civil Rights movement was still fighting for its life and the lives of its supporters, but an inkling of progress came as President Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act, making discrimination in housing a Federal offense. Our boys were still fighting and dying in Vietnam and anti-war demonstrations were prolific throughout the universities. Although our troops remained in Vietnam until 1973, the Apollo moon landing brought the world to a halt. The impossible had happened. US astronauts were walking on the face of the moon! Although many felt bringing the boys home was more of a priority, the landing generated new pride in our country and opened the

door to the future of technology. It brought positive feelings back into our lives and unified us. I was a child of the 40s and 50s. I remember the food rations and scarcities, as well as the nightly blackouts during World War II when Nazi submarines were just offshore from the Jersey City apartment where I lived with my family. Our country was a defined unified country then. We stood strong together under strong leadership. We were one with our neighbors and our military. We were America. As young as I was when the war ended, I watched the return to normalcy… cousins who had served now going to college and learning new trades on a free GI bill, getting married and buying homes with GI loans, getting free medical and rehabilitative care from the government that they served…. rebuilding their lives…. and this united nation was proud to help them. The 50s were a happy time. The world, still recovering from a heart-breaking war, looked to the United States as a dream to hope for. We were the beacon of the world. However, the Vietnam war changed that in the 60s, dividing us once again. The lunar landing brought new hope and dreams. The research and technology used to develop the materials, systems, non-perishable foods and reusable items opened doors to the future. It reunited us in anticipation. Once again,

Do you have a son or daughter attending the Aventura City of Excellence School? Next month is the first day of school. For kids, the start of a new school year is like New Year’s Eve: a chance to start fresh and set intentions for the year ahead. It’s a time to reboot, make new friends, get new clothes and gear, and find new opportunities to fuel their passions. As parents, you can help your children have a Happy School Year by encouraging them to set and accomplish their goals - or school year’s resolutions, including their summer reading. As you enjoy your summer and think about the upcoming year, it is important that you keep your brain active. Research shows that students who read over the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward, losing up to two months of what they learned while in school. The Aventura Charter School has a reading list for your child’s grade level, so encourage them to read during the summer. Make sure your child gets started reading as soon as possible to help keep their mind active, here is the link to the summer reading list by grade: www.aventuracharter.org/ about/news/1660314/summerreading-list. School Year’s Resolutions Whether they want to join a club, improve their math skills, or just make the bus on time every day, here are some resources and tips to help your kids achieve their goals this year. 1) Record school year’s resolutions. Take the time to sit down and chat with your children about what they hope to accomplish in the new year and how they envision getting there. This is a great way for you to learn more about your kids’ dreams - the answer may surprise you! Plus, it’s even a great time for you to make school year’s resolutions. A new school year represents a fresh start for parents too. By setting goals with your child, you can lead by example and bond over the journey of seeing your goals through. 2) Celebrate school year’s eve. Help your child avoid a case of the “Sunday scaries” before the first day of school by hosting a School Year’s Eve Party! Make the new school year something that is fun and celebrated, not feared and Aventura, Page 6A
