Overcrowded pet shelters a major concern While last weekend’s ‘Clear the Shelters’ event set many records, it only scratched the surface in finding homes By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Whether you happen to be an animal lover or not, seeing a cat or dog, roaming the streets, certainly has to leave you with a hollow feeling. Understanding that those animals have no chance of survival, is why last Saturday was so very important to those who love their pets. It was a day that directed the attention on what needs to be done. The animal population – thanks to so many volunteers – has dwindled, because of the spay and neuter programs that are in place – but the surface has not even been scratched and that is a huge problem. The very fact that being an animal lover comes from passion and compassion, is simply not understood in every
circle of society, so whether it’s a cat or dog’s life – to many, it doesn’t matter. That’s where "Clear the Shelters" comes in. Last Saturday, nearly 700 shelters across the country teamed up with NBC Owned Television Stations and Telemundo for "Clear the Shelters,” a nationwide pet adoption drive that helps find loving homes for animals in need. Almost 46,000 pets found their forever homes this year. While many felt "Clear the Shelters" was just a clever name for the free pet adoption event, many never expected that the shelters would actually become practically empty, saving hundreds of lives locally and thousands across the country. AVENTURA - When Pete and Delia Cicale opened Olympia Gym & Fitness Center back in 1978, the philosophy was simple. Customer service, offer first class instruction and provide a workout experience you couldn’t find anywhere else. Today, as the state-of-the-art Aventura location serves as the longest (38 years) operating health and fitness gym in Florida, the objective has remained the same - with hundreds taking advantage of everything this total gym experience has to offer. While Pete and Delia continue to play a major role in everything that has gone on to make this a world class facility, their children have been involved for decades now. Son, Pete, Jr. has made a huge impact, serving as Operations Manager and Dena as their H.R. manager continuing to improve and upgrade with new technology and trends. Both brother and sister have been around the gym since the day they were born, they know everything about the business operations, exercise physiology and what it takes to keep their clients happy and come back for more progress year after year. “It’s all about customer service and being able to welcome each and every
