It all starts for real this Monday . SECOND OF A TWOPART SERIES By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com This coming Monday, throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, the school year begins, and there are indeed many anxious parents and students. The last area of the state of Florida to start the new school year, the youngsters and their parents have had a long time
to prepare, and get ready for the next nine months. While there are many things to do to get ready for this coming school year, making sure that the students have supplies and are ready to go may be the most important. Parents such as Aventura resident Marlene Cooper are anxious as their children will be starting new schools – and that can be a challenge in itself.
“When we were kids, I never remember that it was this crazy, going from elementary to middle school – or middle school to high school,” she said. “I have a daughter who starts Dr. Krop High School and my son will begin his first year at Highland Oaks Middle School. They know kids who are going to the schools, but they are both School, Page 6A
Back To School Family Fun Event in Hollywood, Saturday, August 19
Hollywood - The 13th Annual Back to School Family Fun Event is happening on Saturday, August 19th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Washington Park Community Center at 5199 Pembroke Road in Hollywood. The event is presented by Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc. in cooperation with many community partners. Participants will receive a free book bag, school supplies and refreshments. The first 40 boys (accompanied by an adult) will receive a free haircut. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Children’s Mobile Health Center will be onsite offering free immunizations

As part of the Labor Day weekend, the Casino @ Dania Beach will roll out a Saturday night to remember. On Sept. 2, beginning at 5 p.m., the Wheelin’ Dealin’ Food Truck Festival will be held in the parking lot until 10 p.m. Some off the region’s best will be on hand to feed a hungry crowd. Food Trucks visit The Casino @ Dania Beach every 1st Saturday of the month. This is event is put together by Burger Beast. Beer is sold at this event and parking is plentiful.
The event, which has become popular, will also be held on Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2. See Page 8A.
