VIOLINS OF HOPE Strings of the Holocaust The Shul is proud to present the “Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust,” a concert featuring a private collection of restored violins donated or purchased from Holocaust survivors, on Monday, December 2nd at 8:00 pm at 9540 Collins Avenue, Surfside, Florida. This is the first time these string instruments, many of which were played in the camps, will be performed in South Florida. This concert is being cosponsored by The Young Israel Congregation and The Shul. Many Jewish organizations including CAJE, The Galbut JCC, The Jewish Museum of South Florida, the Holocaust Memorial, The Holocaust Documentation, Education Center and the Holocaust Education Teacher Institute, will lend their support by promoting the concert to their membership. The idea of bringing the Violins of Hope to perform in Florida is a collaboration between Gary Levinson, Sr. Principal Associate Concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony and Kayla Friedman, a member of the Young Israel Congregation in Violins of Hope, Page 6A

The Taoist Thai Chi Story Taoist Thai Chi brings together people of different languages and cultures in a community focused on furthering the aims and objectives established by the founder, Master Moy Lin Shin. In the Taoist tradition, a person’s well-being depends on the harmony of body, mind and spirit. Taoist training integrates all these aspects leading to transformation of the whole person. The teachings say that we are all born with a spark of goodness, sometimes referred to as our Original Nature. By learning and practicing the Taoist arts, we can walk a path that leads back to this Original Nature, to a state of natural health, stillness and clarity of mind, and a spirit of harmony and compassion for the world and for everyone around us. The Taoist arts include a rich variety of practices that have been passed down over the ages. All can be understood as different forms of meditation. Some focus on “movement within stillness,” and include walking, standing, sitting and lying postures. Others focus on “stillness within movement” and include Tai Chi, chanting, cereThai Chi Page 4A

In todays world, it’s hard to know which media sources you can trust

MEDIA BIAS How Much Does Social Media Influence You? By Marylynne Newmark

“Fake news” has become part of the American vernacular. But is it the media instigating fake news while doing its job reporting tweets and twitters and film bites that shoot out insults with serious political implications? Or is it the opinions of political zealots of both parties who embellish snippets of undocumented information that they spin to their advantage? No matter if you lean left or right, this should concern you. Expresssing your opinion on Facebook and Instagram only takes a few seconds, is accessible worldwide, and can be taken for fact by those who agree with you. Are you passing along news or opinion? Like the telephone game we used to play as kids whose message morphed as we passed it on, opinion can become the basis of conspiracy theories that sooner or later are accepted as facts, influencing millions? So, when you hear or see messages, how can you tell the difference between the truth or someone else’s interpretation of actual news? Why even rely on the original writer or cable news commentator? Their job is to find the story line and make it sensational. Otherwise, daily news and programming would be boring.

I spent years as a public relations consultant. My job was to find the positive news in every situation and spin it into an angle that would benefit my client or his product. Personally, I had to believe in my client to do that, and there were some that I turned down. Take the case of a pro bono attorney, whose job it is to defend someone accused of the most heinous crime. He or she will use all of his or her skills and knowledge to encourage an inculpable verdict. And, if the attorney is successful and the criminal goes free, horrible acts are very likely to re-occur. It’s the same with media. By accepting a position with print or electronic media, a reporter will march in place to promote the social or political line of the publisher or broadcasting company, since it feeds the values of loyal followers and advertisers. Story angles may originate with facts, but subliminally, the author writes subjectively under corporate approval. So would that be fake news? Not necessarily. However, it is presented in such a way as to influence you. So, what can you do about it? You can educate yourself by

looking for the original facts. With today’s electronic vehicles, it is easy to access TV news footage to observe actual comments of the individual and to view C-span hearings. It may surprise you to see empty Congressional chambers when important votes come to the floor, or instead of your elected officials, their young legislative aides are there to say nay or yea on behalf of their superior or the party line. Watching those hearings can provide great

insights into the actions and effectiveness of those representing you. After observing this first-hand, tune in to cable and social media that represents both sides of the political spectrum (as an example, both CNN and Fox). Compare them to what you actually saw and heard, note their slant ….and form your own opinMedia Bias, Page 6A
