Social Citizens Welcomes New Season

As the dreary dog days of summer come to a close, take a look at the Social Citizens of Southeast Florida website.

WOW; this group offers an amazing variety of cool activities for the upcoming 2019-20 season. For those who would like to develop a meaningful social life, then this particular group will match your expectations.

You have worked hard in life and now it’s time to relax and enjoy. The kids have grown up and the grandchildren are away at school. Take a break from that comfort zone, put down that smart phone and flipping the television stations. Isolation is not meditation. We are social creatures and need the companionship.

Join the group for lunch and at the restaurant be warmly greeted by Nancy Leyton, Secretary, Social Citizens.

Share a table with a group of cheerful members, then the waiter brings the special menu with many mouthwatering selections.

Dennis Stubbolo, President, and Lewis Thaler, Vice President, converses with guests at their tables where they make everyone feel welcome setting the tone for an enjoyable afternoon.

Many of the members reside in Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach and within a perimeter of twelve miles. Statistics suggest that the U.S. is safer today than it has been in the last 50 years. With vehicular deaths plummeting over the last few decades, and homicide rates at historic lows (with the exception of mass shootings with firearms), these can all be considered manifestations of prosperity in our country.

The U.S has also enjoyed a stable economy over the last few years. Since 2011 the GDP, which is fundamentally a measure of the economy’s size, has seen only Prosperity, Page 2A

What it means for Millennials and the Youth In a recent cover story by Time magazine, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez D-N.Y, made the claim that her generation, “which is now becoming one of the largest electorates in America, came of age and never saw American prosperity.” AOC, is an advocate of Democratic Socialism, a political ideology that’s gained substantial support from younger voters in the years since Bernie Sanders’ presidential run in 2016.

But why are so many younger Americans embracing this ideology? And how does one measure an abstract concept like “American Prosperity”?

There are those who would cite technological advancements as a sign of prosperity. With the

rise of technology, communication has been streamlined like never before. There are more Americans with access to the internet today than there has ever been. The US census bureau reported that among all households surveyed in their 2015 study 78% reported having a desktop or lap top while 75% reported having a computer, smartphone or other wireless handheld device. Looking around at any public setting you would be shocked to find a person who is not engaging with their cellphone.

With the rise of technology there has also been substantial advancements in medicine. In the last ten years alone we have seen the emergence of new targeted

Good parents want to be involved in their children’s lives, but for years educators and psychologists have been asking the question: How much parental involvement is too much? When does trying to help your children in school, sports, and myriad other ways go too far, hurt their development, and become overprotective?

The explosive college admissions scandal seemed to answer that question. Television actress Felicity Huffman was sentenced to jail for paying $15,000 to influence the boosting of her daughter’s SAT score, and actress Lori Loughlin who has chosen to battle it out in court, may lose big and get a long prison sentence. Fourteen other parents in the probe have also pleaded guilty.

Loughlin having plead not guilty in mid-April and turning down a government deal, Loughlin and Giannulli (her husband) are accused in the “Operation Varsity Blues” probe of paying “bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team — despite the fact that they did not participate in crew — thereby facilitating their admission to USC,” according to the 200-page indictment made public March 12.

Comparatively we’ve seen an average growth rate of 2.7%.

However, while wages have increased by 67% since 1970, school tuition has increased at a faster pace. Since the late 1980’s the cost of an undergraduate degree has increased by 213% for public institutions and 129% for those which are private. This massive price hike has caused several students to fall into debt.

Steph Nunez, 26, who graduated from The University of Central Florida, top 15% of her class, is one of many who suffers from staggering

student debt. Now working as an elementary school teacher, she doesn’t identify as a democratic socialist but is a strong supporter of free education for all.

“College tuition should absolutely be free. Teachers are underpaid and under appreciated, and I think that it hurts our society.

We get up every morning to raise children who will be the future of our country. How can we be expected to do that when we’re hungry, tired, in debt, and living pay check to paycheck?”

Many people would

blame the debt amount on Steph, who made the decision to get a degree in education, a discipline many advise against due to its’ notorious reputation for low profitability.

“That’s not fair to us,” said Nunez, “Teachers are the ones who are forming our society and taking care of your children and teaching them responsibility and work ethic. Without elementary school teachers to build a foundation how could you expect to have a successful country or educational system? We don’t expect handouts, we just expect a living wage, dignity, and respect. Is that so much to ask for if we’re living in the greatest country in the world?”

For many young people the cost of degrees and

student debt makes buying a home difficult. According to a recent study by Harvard University, in 2017 the average cost of a single family home was 4.2 times greater than the median household income, a nearly historic high. In fact, since the 1960’s median home prices have increased by 121%, while median household income has increased by only 26%.

For this reason many young people are renting just to save money in hopes of buying a house later on. Still renters are suffering as median gross rent has increased by 72% since 1960, more than twice the rate of household incomes. Even with government assistance and student loan forgiveness

programs, for many young graduates, like Steph, buying a house is inconceivable.

Nunez said, “The gap between housing prices and incomes is ridiculous. So many of us are forced to move back in with our parents, and that’s if we’re fortunate enough to be able to do that. There are some people that don’t have a family that they can rely on like that.”

Some young people such as recently graduated Felipe Castilla, 25, believe that the rising popularity of Democratic Socialism is a result of more young people becoming educated.

“I think that people are starting to realize that policies enacted by both republicans and democrats are representative of Neo liberal ideals that only benefit a certain segment of the American population, namely the top 1 percent.”

Studies have shown that Americans in the top 1 percent of the country average over 39 times more income than the bottom 90 percent, while Americans in the top 0.1 percent make over 188 times the income of the bottom 90 percent.

Young graduates like Castilla believe that enacting certain socialist policies would alleviate inequality.

“With the amount of money going to the top percent I can’t understand how we still don’t have Medicare for all, it has been long overdue” says Castilla, “considering we are the only industrialized nation in the world which doesn’t have one form or another of a medicare for all system.”

Although there are many young voters who support several of these new progressive policies there are also those who understandably remain skeptical, Such as student Brittany Broxton, 19.

“I wouldn’t advocate for all the policies. They sound like good ideas on paper, but where would the money come from? And at what cost?”

Estimates for a medicare for all plan have been estimated to cost the federal government between 28-32 trillion over the span of a decade.

“Do I think that there’s American prosperity? Yes.” says Broxton, “But I don’t believe that everyone has an equal opportunity at it.

There’s always room for improvement and as a country we should always be open to new ideas as we look towards the future.”

“The consequences of being an overprotective parent is that your child will lack self-confidence to make decisions and take risks,” says Martin (www.youvegotthisparentin g.com), author of You’ve Got This! Keys To Effective Parenting For The Early Years. “They’ll lack the coping skills to get up when they fall down from a bad experience and try again.”

Martin offers four ways for parents to stop being overprotective and promote more strength and independence in their children: Stop teaching fear.

While there are nonnegotiables when it comes to teaching your child safety - for example: wearing a helmet when biking, no talking to strangers, no texting when driving Martin says sometimes parents overprotect when they create too many boundaries, which in turn may teach children to live fearfully. “When you don’t allow them to play outside much, you’re impeding their freedom,” Martin says. “Play develops the imagination and selfconfidence. Overprotective parents don’t want their children to fall down, and getting back up and brushing themselves off is a necessary component for healthy growth and development.”

Don’t be their full-time problem-solver.

Martin says many parents want to

take care of all of their chidlrens’ problems and make things easier for them. At some point that needs to stop, she says, because adult life is rife with adversity and unforeseen obstacles that we must learn to deal with independently. “Teaching children problem-solving skills encourages them to be independent,” Martin says. “Learning to resolve conflict on their own and work through problems builds resilience and teaches them how to handle adversity.”

Teach responsibility. “If you make their beds and clean their room, you’re doing them a great disservice,” Martin says. “It’s about learning early lessons in responsibility.

Doing these things for a prolonged time can debilitate your child and set them up for a lack of life skills as adults. Let your child take on reasonable responsibilities and let them feel a sense of accomplishment.”

Let them branch out.

Sometimes parents develop a comfort zone with their child’s pursuits and restrict them when the child wants to expand.

“Let your child have some freedom to make some of their own decisions about their interests,” Martin says. “Interests change, and the more varied experiences they have, the better for their ability to make decisions and adapt to different situations.”

“Parents are right to protect their children in a dangerous world,” Martin says. “But having them grow up in a bubble hurts them and their ability to deal with the world as adults. The best thing you can do for your children is to find that balance between protecting them and teaching them to be strong and self-sufficient.”

A Message to City of Hollywood Water Customers The City of Hollywood recently approved a new utility rate structure that includes a rate increase while encouraging water conservation. Over the past five years the City focused on maintaining the rate structure, while finding alternative solutions to operational cost increases.

Making rate adjustments now allows us to fund mandatory

water and wastewater system upgrades needed to meet state and federal regulatory requirements, the renewal and replacement of aging equipment and infrastructure, and ensure the safety and reliability of the system and projects necessary for future growth and expansion.

Beginning this past Monday, October 1, 2019, the City of

Hollywood implemented a new, simplified tiered rate structure for water and wastewater customers. Previously, the City had a 15 tier structure, this new simpler three tier structure is designed to reward customers who conserve water and create an incentive for those who currently do not. This allows customers greater control over

their monthly bill. The charges for water increase as usage increases. Simply put, the more water a customer consumes, the higher the rate they are charged.

The less water they consume, the lower their bill will be. The City’s stormwater rate has remained unchanged for more than 10 years. The new rate will increase by $2.90 and took effect

October 1st. Customers will notice a slight increase in their monthly base rate and seasonal customers will now be charged a minimum monthly base rate regardless of use. Two Water Parks Go to the Dogs in October For patrons who need consoling when three of our four water parks close for the season at the end of September – only Paradise Cove at C.B. Smith Park remains open another month – take heart: Two water parks (Castaway Island at T.Y. Park and Splash Adventure at Quiet Waters Park) reopen almost immediately for the everpopular dogs-only days the first three weekends of October.

First up is Barktobertfest at Quiet Waters (401 S Powerline Rd., Deerfield Beach 33442; 954357-5100), 9AM to 5PM on Saturday and Sunday, October 5th and 6th. Activities include doggie splash time, rescue and nonprofit groups, adoptions, Doggie Market Place, kiddie bounce houses, face painting, and a costume contest. Some activities entail nominal fees, and there is a $6.50/dog fee for 50-

• Dogs must be sociable and well behaved.

The Casino at Dania Beach Goes Pink for October!

The Casino at Dania Beach is known to be a place of excitement, fun and diversion, with thousands of patrons visiting each week. It has rapidly become one of the most popular venues for both gaming and entertainment, also offering a wide array of concerts and special events. In October, the Casino will use its location, and brand voice for something more serious, to create community awareness by “going pink”!

Why pink? The pink ribbon is an international symbol of breast cancer awareness. Pink ribbons, and pink in general, identify the wearer as one expressing moral support, for women with breast cancer.

Pink ribbons are most commonly seen during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October).

Hallandale Beach: Moving In A Positive Direction

Hello beautiful people of the great City of Hallandale Beach.

With the weather shifting gears into fall, our City will be an amazing site to see. Crisp winds will soon be blowing on our beautiful beaches for everyone to enjoy. Although the weather may be changing soon our hard work and dedication will not.

Ensuring the safety of our residents is an important priority for everyone within our City.

Hearing what the residents want for their safety is helpful but also assures that the job is being done correctly. Last Tuesday, September 24, we conducted our safety walk in the southwest side of our City.

Safety walks are coordinated with City Staff to learn more about concerns of our community. Joining myself along the walk was Vice Mayor Sabrina Javellana, City Manager Chavarria, Police Chief Quinones, CoHB police officers, Development Services Director Leroy, Public Works Director Sylvain and staff from Code Division and HBCRA. We all heard the feedback of our residents and will take this into consideration for our next steps moving forward. • 1/3 cup crushed peanuts • powdered sugar, for garnish Heat oven to 350 F. Butter four 4-ounce ramekins. In bowl, mix 1/3 cup peanut butter, eggs, sugar, milk, vanilla and salt. Toss bread cubes in mixture until thoroughly coated. Divide evenly among prepared dishes. Bake until custard is set in middle and tops are golden, about 35-40 minutes. If tops of bread brown too quickly, cover ramekins loosely with aluminum foil. In small saucepan over low heat, combine remaining peanut butter and maple syrup until thoroughly warmed.

To serve, drizzle ramekins with maple-peanut sauce and garnish with chopped peanuts and powdered sugar.

Substitution: Whole wheat rolls may be used in place of brioche or challah bread.

Peanut Butter Squares Recipe courtesy of Southern Peanut Growers Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Yield: 24 squares • Nonstick cooking spray

• 1 package (17 1/2 ounces) • peanut butter cookie mix • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 tablespoon water • 1 egg • 3 cups miniature marshmallows • 2/3 cup light corn syrup • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 teaspoons vanilla • 1 bag (10 ounces) peanut butter chips • 2 cups crispy rice cereal • 2 cups salted roasted peanuts Heat oven to 350 F. Spray 13by-9-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray. In large bowl, stir cookie mix, oil, water and egg until soft dough forms. Press dough into prepared pan.

Bake 15-20 minutes, or until set. Sprinkle marshmallows over crust. Bake 1-2 minutes until marshmallows begin to puff.

Remove from oven.

In 4-quart saucepan over low heat, heat corn syrup, butter, vanilla and peanut butter chips, stirring constantly until chips are melted and smooth. Remove from heat.

Stir in cereal and peanuts; spoon mixture evenly over marshmallow layer. Refrigerate 30 minutes, or until firm. Cut into bars and serve.
