Dreaming a Little Dream of His By Marylynne Newmark
For local boy Preston C. Howell, the past week-and-a-half must have seemed like a dream come true after all four chairs turned for him on the blind audition of “The Voice”. He belted out the silky provocative voice of a crooner from the forties and wowed the judges and the audience with his jazz-like version of the 1931 hit “Dream a Little Dream of Me”. The amazing thing is that Preston Howell is only fourteen years old with classic good looks that make him seem older in a very sophisticated way. The judges loved him, likening him to Michael Buble. Each judge, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Gwen Stefani heaped praises on him and made tremendous overtures to Preston to select him or her to be his coach.
Referring to his age, Blake Shelton said, “You’re either born with a voice like that, or you’re not. And for you, being born with that was not so long ago!” John Legend applauded him for “taking on a music standard that most people would not have the ‘kahones’ to do.” Gwen Stefani asked, “How can you be only 14 with a voice like that? My son is 13 and his voice is like this,” as she made gargling, cracked sounds. Kelly Clarkson yelled “I love you!” and said she wanted to take Preston home to be his parent. After much cajoling, Preston chose John Legend to be his coach and mentor. “You made the right choice,” tweeted a fan later that evening. “John will lead you on the right path.” Preston was born into music. He grew up singing along with his dad, Paul Howell, who sang professionally for a short while, but now “sings every day, usually in his closet along with the Smule app”, jokes Preston’s mom. She reports that at the age of four, Preston began mimicking his dad, singing all types of music. While very young, Preston took a liking to ballads by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Elvis. Hits like “Fly Me ToThe Moon” and “That’s Amore” were his favorites. ”It was about that time that Michael Buble became popular and
The Humane Society of Greater Miami has launched an important fundraising effort that will enable the organization to take in and treat even more of the community’s homeless animals. The $1.5 million initiative will be allocated for expansion of the Humane Society’s facility, a project that began in 2017 and is set to break ground in 2020. As Miami-Dade’s pet homelessness problem continues to be a prominent issue, the Humane Society’s capacity to assist remains limited. As an adoption guarantee facility, the Humane Society is able to provide shelter and care for hundreds of dogs and cats while they wait for their permanent home, no matter how long it takes. However, once there is no more space in the facility, they are no longer able to take in additional animals. By adding space that will be dedicated to taking in pets who need extended time at

RELIEF FOR A BASEBALL ICON Bucky Dent’s Cataract Surgery is a Homerun at Braverman Eye Center While Bucky Dent is most famous for his home run in a tiebreaker game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park at the end of the 1978 regular season, this south Florida native has done so much during his 67 years. As a former football and baseball standout at Hialeah High in the late 1960’s, Dent’s career has truly been filled with more ups than downs – and being part of the historic New York Yankee organization for decades – he cherishes every moment. But as much as he has been “Superman” to so many baseball
fans throughout the years, Dent is just like all of us when it comes to his eyesight, and when he had cataract surgery on March 12, it brought relief from years of vision that wasn’t so perfect. His visit to the spacious, state of the art, Braverman Eye Center in Hollywood for an initial consultation, brought smiles and plenty of optimism about his vision and how it could be corrected. “My eye doctor back in Connecticut felt that I needed cataract surgery, and because of my home here in south Florida, immediately suggested Dr. (Stanley) Braverman,” Dent

recalled. “From the first time I went for the consultation, it was amazing. Dr. Braverman and his staff went over everything with me.” Like anyone when it comes to having anything to do with the eyes, Dent was obviously concerned, but that meeting with Dr. Braverman eased all of that. Dent has been wearing glasses for years, and because his vision was getting blurry and he was having a tough time seeing, the surgery was needed to keep up that quality lifestyle. Because of his busy schedule, still working with the

Yankees, his plan was to do the first one in March, which was successful, and then come back later on and get the other eye done. “I can tell you this, within the first few days of the surgery – when things started to come together – it was amazing how
clearly I was seeing. Because the other eye needs to have the same procedure done, you can see the difference.” As for the surgery, it could not have gone better. Dent was pleased. He is looking forward to Braverman, Page 2B
