CELEBRATING The Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach is celebrating twenty-five years of serving the community and continues working with the Hallandale High School Key Club assisting those in need while raising funds for local charities. Our contributions have included street clean ups, beach clean ups, feeding homeless people, sponsoring numerous athletic teams with the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League, providing scholarships to outstanding High School graduates, pasta dinner and pancake breakfast fundraisers, a sock hop benefitting Project Alive, raising thousands of dollars for UNICEF to eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus, assisting disabled children ride horses through our horses and handicap program, provide dictionaries to our third grade students, distribute turkeys at Thanksgiving, restaurant raffles and avid supporters of the annual Shop With A Cop allowing deserving children to receive gifts at Christmas. This is just a short summary of our many accomplishments. Our success is based on the cooperation of all of our Kiwanis members as well as collaborating with the City of Hallandale Beach and the continued publicity generously provided by the South Florida Sun Times. I am most proud of our Kiwanis Club’s participation over the past 14 years in Christmas in July which is a project that utilizes all 25 Kiwanis Clubs in Broward County supporting over 25,000 homeless children living in shelters since 2001. Each child receives underwear, shorts, socks, jeans, hygiene products and school supplies in a backpack as well as receiving a hot lunch at the event, We are grateful to the BB&T Center in Sunrise for allowing us to use their facility. The Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach has traditionally served food in the food court as well as setting and cleaning up. The event is largely

numerous hits in English and Spanish, establishing him as one of the first bilingual artists to have international crossover success. Jazz artist, Dr. Ed Calle will be opening the event.

As if she already hasn’t achieved terrific heights in her life at the age of 58, Toula Amanna, owner of the fabulous Flashback Diner across from Gulfstream, is now being honored by the Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce with its Lifetime Achievement Award. The event will take place this Saturday, October 19 at the Chamber’s Annual Business in Excellence Gala, which will be held at the Doubletree Resort in Hollywood. Other awards for outstanding service to the community also will be presented. When asked how she felt about being honored in this way, Toula answered, “As humbled

and grateful as I feel, I’m ‘kinda’ too young for this. I still have a lot of lifetime goals, and who knows where that will go!” In response, Norma Jules, Executive Director of the Hallandale Beach Chamber said,” Toula exemplifies a long history of exceptional leadership and contribution to the history of Hallandale Beach. Her extraordinary contribution and unwavering commitment positively impacts the economic development of our community. However, what’s most admirable about Toula is her heart for service. Not bad for a girl who came to live in Hallandale Beach directly from Greece in 1979 at

the age of 17 , and has been recognized time and time again for her entrepreneurship and successes. More than that, Toula is known for her team-building and management skills that attract and keep loyal employees with her for years. There’s Mary Parks, Toula’s co-worker who trained her in 1979 and stayed with her for many years thereafter, as did Robert Drayton and Nellie Martin, who Toula identifies as indispensable members of her team. Or, you could go to Flashback today and ask Jamal Qazi who has worked with Toula since 1983 or Joseph Bienaime who Toula Amanna, Page 7A

Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their team are excited to return to Florida! They plan to film episodes of the hit series American Pickers throughout this area in December. For those of you that don’t follow the show AMERICAN PICKERS is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique “picking” on History. The hit show follows Mike and Frank, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them. As they hit the back roads from coast to coast, Mike and Frank are on a mission to recycle and rescue forgotten relics. Along the way, the Pickers want to meet characters with remarkable and exceptional items. The pair hopes to give historically significant objects a new lease on life, while learning a thing or two about America’s past along the way. MIKE WOLFE A lifelong American picker, Mike Wolfe has been searching for hidden treasure since he was four years old. Over the years, he’s earned a reputation as one of the country’s foremost foragers, traveling coast to coast in search of rusty gold. Where other people see dilapidated barns and overgrown yards, Wolfe sees the beauty of long-lost things and the stories of the people who made them, used them and somehow saved them. Wolfe spends as much time as he can on the road, often with Frank Fritz, his friend of 20 years and fellow picker, in tow. “A picker’s kind of like a nomad,” he explains. And for Wolfe, the people he meets and the tales they tell are an integral part of the journey—ultimately as valuable as the rare finds he unearths in their barns, attics and sheds.
