Dictatorship in Disguise

Authoritarian Monsters Wreak Havoc on Our Freedoms

“You see them on the street. You watch them on TV. You might even vote for one this fall. You think they’re people just like you. You’re wrong. Dead wrong.”

— They Live

We’re living in two worlds.

There’s the world we see (or are made to see) and then there’s the one we sense (and occasionally catch a glimpse of), the latter of which is a far cry from the propaganda-driven reality manufactured by the gov ernment and its corporate sponsors, including the media.

Indeed, what most Americans perceive as life in America—privileged, progressive and free—is a far cry from reality, where economic inequality is growing, real agendas and real power are buried beneath layers of Orwellian doublespeak and corporate obfus cation, and “freedom,” such that it is, is meted out in small, legalistic doses by militarized police and federal agents armed to the teeth.

All is not as it seems.

Monsters with human faces walk among us. Many of them work for the U.S. government.

This is the premise of John Carpenter’s film They Live, which was released in November 1988 and remains unnervingly, chill ingly appropriate for our modern age.

Best known for his horror film Halloween, which assumes that there is a form of evil so dark that it can’t be killed, Carpenter’s larger body of work is infused with a strong anti-authoritarian, anti-establishment, laconic bent that speaks to the filmmaker’s concerns about the unraveling of our society, particularly our gov ernment.

Time and again, Carpenter portrays the government working against its own citizens, a popu lace out of touch with reality, technology run amok, and a future more horrific than any hor ror film.

In Escape from New York, Carpenter presents fascism as the future of America.

In The Thing, a remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic of the same name, Carpenter presupposes that increasingly we are all becoming dehumanized.

In Christine, the film adap tation of Stephen King’s novel about a demon-possessed car, technology exhibits a will and consciousness of its own and goes on a murderous rampage.

In In the Mouth of Madness, Carpenter notes that evil grows when people lose “the ability to know the difference between reality and fantasy.”

And then there is Carpenter’s

They Live, in which two migrant workers discover that the world is not as it seems. In fact, the population is actually being con trolled and exploited by aliens working in partnership with an oligarchic elite. All the while, the populace—blissfully unaware of the real agenda at work in their lives—has been lulled into com placency, indoctrinated into

of American culture.

A citizenry that does not think for themselves, obeys without question, is submissive, does not challenge authority, does not think outside the box, and is content to sit back and be enter tained is a citizenry that can be easily controlled.

In this way, the subtle mes sage of They Live provides an

terrorist attack; 11,000 times more likely to die from an air plane accident than from a ter rorist plot involving an airplane; 1,048 times more likely to die from a car accident than a terror ist attack, and 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist, we have handed over control of our lives to government officials who treat

growing. Racial justice and human rights are nonexistent. They have created a repressive society and we are their unwit ting accomplices. Their intention to rule rests with the annihilation of consciousness. We have been lulled into a trance. They have made us indifferent to ourselves, to others. We are focused only on our own gain.”

We, too, are focused only on our own pleas ures, prejudices and gains. Our poor and underclasses are also growing. Injustice is grow ing. Inequality is growing. A concern for human rights is nearly nonexist ent. We too have been lulled into a trance, indif ferent to others.

Oblivious to what lies ahead, we’ve been manipulated into believing that if we continue to con sume, obey, and have faith, things will work out. But that’s never been true of emerging regimes. And by the time we feel the hammer coming down upon us, it will be too late.

So where does that leave us?

The characters who populate Carpenter’s films provide some insight.

compliance, bombarded with media distractions, and hyp notized by subliminal messages beamed out of television and various electronic devices, bill boards and the like.

It is only when homeless drifter John Nada (played to the hilt by the late Roddy Piper) dis covers a pair of doctored sun glasses—Hoffman lenses—that Nada sees what lies beneath the elite’s fabricated reality: control and bondage.

When viewed through the lens of truth, the elite, who appear human until stripped of their dis guises, are shown to be mon sters who have enslaved the citi zenry in order to prey on them.

Likewise, billboards blare out hidden, authoritative messages: a bikini-clad woman in one ad is actually ordering viewers to “MARRY AND REPRODUCE.”

Magazine racks scream “CONSUME” and “OBEY.” A wad of dollar bills in a vendor’s hand proclaims, “THIS IS YOUR GOD.”

When viewed through Nada’s Hoffman lenses, some of the other hidden messages being drummed into the people’s sub conscious include: NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT, CONFORM, SUBMIT, STAY ASLEEP, BUY, WATCH TV, NO IMAGINATION, and DO NOT QUESTION AUTHORITY.

This indoctrination campaign engineered by the elite in They Live is painfully familiar to any one who has studied the decline

apt analogy of our own distorted vision of life in the American police state, what philosopher Slavoj Zizek refers to as dictator ship in democracy, “the invisible order which sustains your appar ent freedom.”

We’re being fed a series of carefully contrived fictions that bear no resemblance to reality.

Tune out the government’s attempts to distract, divert and befuddle us and tune into what’s really going on in this country, and you’ll run headlong into an unmistakable, unpalatable truth: what we are dealing with today is an authoritarian beast that has outgrown its chains and will not be restrained.

Through its acts of power grabs, brutality, meanness, inhu manity, immorality, greed, cor ruption, debauchery and tyranny, the government has become almost indistinguishable from the evil it claims to be fighting, whether that evil takes the form of terrorism, torture, disease, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, murder, violence, theft, pornog raphy, scientific experimen tations or some other diabolical means of inflicting pain, suffering and servitude on humanity.

We have let the government’s evil-doing and abuses go on for too long.

We’re being fed a series of carefully contrived fictions that bear no resemblance to reality.

Despite the fact that we are 17,600 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a

us as a means to an end—the source of money and power.

As the Bearded Man in They Live warns, “They are disman tling the sleeping middle class. More and more people are becoming poor. We are their cat tle. We are being bred for slavery.”

We have bought into the illu sion and refused to grasp the truth.

From the moment we are born until we die, we are indoctrinated into believing that those who rule us do it for our own good. The truth is far different.

The powers-that-be want us to feel threatened by forces beyond our control (terrorists, pandemics, mass shootings, etc.).

They want us afraid and dependent on the government and its militarized armies for our safety and well-being.

They want us distrustful of each other, divided by our preju dices, and at each other’s throats.

Most of all, they want us to continue to march in lockstep with their dictates as fearful, con trolled, pacified zombies.

This brings me back to They Live, in which the real zombies are not the aliens calling the shots but the populace who are content to remain controlled.

When all is said and done, the world of They Live is not so dif ferent from our own. As one of the characters points out, “The poor and the underclass are

Underneath their machismo, they still believe in the ideals of liberty and equal opportunity. Their beliefs place them in constant oppo sition with the law and the estab lishment, but they are nonethe less freedom fighters.

When, for example, John Nada destroys the alien hypnotransmitter in They Live, he deliv ers a wake-up call for freedom.

As Nada memorably declares, “I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubblegum.”

In other words: we need to get active and take a stand for what’s really important.

Stop allowing yourselves to be easily distracted by pointless political spectacles and pay attention to what’s really going on in the country.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the real battle for control of this nation is taking place on roadsides, in police cars, on witness stands, over phone lines, in government offices, in corporate offices, in public school hallways and classrooms, in parks and city council meetings, and in towns and cities across this country.

All the trappings of the American police state are now in plain sight.

Wake up, America.

If they live (the tyrants, the oppressors, the invaders, the overlords), it is only because “we the people” sleep.

Plastic Surgery Bundling Booms

Social Media, cell phone cam eras and video conferencing apps like Zoom and Teams drove a significant uptick in facial plas tic surgeries over the past couple of years. Now, the trend is piv oting back to the body, says top New York City Plastic Surgeon Dr. Richard Westreich.

“Body Contouring is surging and in demand,” said Dr. Westreich. “Now that we’re get ting a level of normalcy, the boom from Zoom is switching back to focusing on the body.”

Also on trend? Bundling more than one procedure in one sur gical appointment — Liposuction and Rhinoplasty, for example. This approach can save money and time for cosmetic surgery patients. Whatever procedure a person is considering, due dili gence is the best defense against potential Post-Op prob lems, Dr. Westreich cautioned.

“My best advice to people is to go back to the mindset before the Zoom boom,” he said, explaining that virtual consults have streamlined the process and tightened the timeline between concept and comple tion. “Don’t rush into something just because it’s easy or conven ient.”

Popular procedures include: Breast Augmentation, Liposuction, Rhinoplasty, Eyelid Surgery and Facelifts. Less invasive pro cedures like Botox injections are skyrocketing in popularity after the Pandimic.

If you’re considering any cosmetic procedure, these safety tips from Dr. Westreich can improve your chances of a better outcome:

Tip 1: Make sure any doctor you schedule through a virtual visit allows you to cancel AFTER an in-person

meeting for surgery. There is no substitute for face to face.

Tip 2: Your health doesn’t belong in the bargain bin.

Tip 3: Medical tourism can be dangerous. Laws may differ; regulations may differ; problems with after care may arise.

Tip 4: Understand informed consent. Ask for examples of not only the good outcomes but also the potential bad ones. Ask for data specific to the procedure and the doctor performing it (complication rates, death rates).

Tip 5: Surgery belongs in accredited operating rooms. Ask to see Accreditation Certificates (AAA, AAAA, JCAHO).

Tip 6: Make sure the Board Certification of a doctor makes sense for the pro cedure they are performing.

Tip 7: If significant issues arise after a procedure (surgery or office injection), seek a second opinion on management.

More on Dr. Richard Westreich Dr. Richard Westreich gradu ated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Biological Basis of Behavior, Neuroscience concen tration in 1995 from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his medical school training at the New York University School of Medicine in 1999 with an M.D. and Honors in Cell Biology Research. Dr. Westreich then did his postgraduate training in Facial Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology at the prestigious Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

He has been selected multiple

times by Castle Connolly and New York magazine as one of the top doctors in Facial Plastic Surgery. He is an Assistant Professor at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and is on staff at Lenox Hill and Mount Sinai Hospitals. He is a Faculty Member and teacher at a fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery at Mount Sinai. The Deadly Cost of Police Welfare Checks

Think twice before you call the cops to carry out a welfare check on a loved one.

Especially if you value that person’s life.

Particularly if that person is disabled, mentally ill, elderly, Autistic, hearing impaired, suffer ing from Dementia, or might have a condition that hin ders their ability to understand, communi cate or immediately comply with an order.

According to an investigation by The Washington Post, cops sent out on welfare checks ended up shooting or killing the very people they were supposed to assist in at least 178 cases over the course of three years.

Atatiana Jefferson was neither disabled, mentally ill, elderly, autistic, hear ing impaired, suffering from dementia. The 28-year-old Fort Worth resident was merely awake at 2:30 am, playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew in a house with its lights on and the front door open.

A neighbor, noticing the lights and open door, asked police to do a welfare check on the house hold. Instead of announcing themselves at the front door, police crept quietly around the house. Hearing noises outside, Jefferson approached her bed room window to investigate.

Seeing Jefferson through the window, police yelled, “Put your hands up! Show me your hands!”

Within seconds of issuing that order and without identifying themselves, police fired a single shot. Jefferson died on the scene.

Atatiana Jefferson’s death is yet one more grim statistic to add to that growing list of Americans—unarmed, impaired or experiencing a mental health crisis—who have been killed by police trained in the worst-case scenario and thus ready to shoot

first and ask questions later.

The officer who fired the shot claimed he did so because he perceived “a threat.”

the two police officers assigned to check on Plack to decide to use lethal force against her (both cops opened fire on the woman),

officers. People of color are three times more likely to be killed by police than their white counter parts. If you’re black and dis

against those with a mental ill ness.

Where does this leave us?

For starters, we need better police training across the board, but especially when it comes to de-escalation tactics and crisis intervention.

A study by the National Institute of Mental Health found that Crisis Intervention Team-trained officers made fewer arrests, used less force, and connected more peo ple with mental-health services than their non-trained peers.

Second, police need to learn how to slow confrontations down, instead of ramp ing up the tension (and the noise).

ing a certain way, or holding something—anything—that police could misinterpret to be a gun, or igniting some triggercentric fear in a police officer’s mind that has nothing to do with an actual threat to their safety, even the most benign encounters with police can have fatal con sequences.

For those undergoing a men tal health crisis or with special needs whose disabilities may not be immediately apparent, the dangers posed by these socalled wellness checks are even greater.

For example, Gay Plack, a 57year-old Virginia woman with Bipolar Disorder, was killed after two police officers—sent to do a welfare check on her—entered her home uninvited, wandered through the house shouting her name, kicked open her locked bedroom door, discovered the terrified woman hiding in a dark bathroom and wielding a small axe, and four seconds later, shot her in the stomach.

Four seconds.

That’s all the time it took for

option” but to shoot the 5 foot 4 inch woman with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This is what happens when you indoctrinate the police into believing that their lives and their safety are paramount to anyone else’s: suddenly, everyone and everything else is a threat that must be neutralized or elimi nated.

In light of the government’s ongoing efforts to predict who might pose a threat to public safety based on mental health sensor data, encounters with the police could get even more deadly for those with a mental ill ness or disability.

As Steve Silberman writes for The New York Times “Anyone who cares for someone with a developmental disability, as well as for disabled people them selves [lives] every day in fear that their behavior will be mis construed as suspicious, intoxi cated or hostile by law enforce ment.”

Indeed, disabled individuals make up a third to half of all peo ple killed by law enforcement

From Iowa to Elvis

Destined to Fly, The Fascinating True Story of the Pilot to the King

Destined to Fly: The Story of Pilot Ron Strauss – From Iowa to Elvis, from noted Elvis historian and journalist Sally Hoedel, retraces the life of an ordinary boy from Iowa as his life takes an extraordinary turn and he becomes a pilot of one of the most famous airplanes in exis tence — Elvis Presley’s 880 Convair, the Lisa Marie.

From an early age, Strauss had a desire to be involved in aviation, and he served 12 years in the United States Air Force. As a flight engineer, Strauss flew 3,400 hours during the Vietnam War, departing California with supplies and returning with fallen soldiers. As a pilot, he was instrumental in peacefully resolv ing a hijacking conflict involving General Somoza in Nicaragua in 1974. One of the political pris oners who Strauss flew to Cuba during that ordeal is now the president of Nicaragua.

Through a series of serendipi tous events — and one stressfilled interview with Vernon Presley — Strauss landed a job piloting Elvis’ plane from 1975 until Elvis’ untimely passing in 1977.

Destined to Fly offers a per sonal glimpse of Elvis during the busiest touring years of his

career. Along with never-beforeseen photos from inside the famous airplane, the complete record of where Elvis traveled aboard the Lisa Marie, whether on tour or on retreat, is available as an appendix in this book. Strauss’ flight log is an incredible historical document, and it is printed in its entirety for the first time ever.

“Ron Strauss certainly cannot be reduced to the nearly two years he flew Elvis Presley,” Hoedel said. “His story is more vast than that short period. However, the book does capture Elvis Presley as a boss and a leader within a very unique organization. Elvis fans will walk away with new information about the Lisa Marie and what it was like to be called up in the middle of the night for an unscheduled destination at the request of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

Hoedel examines the eight decades of Strauss’ journey thus far, as she explores the roots of his character and the hard work and perseverance behind his successful aviation career.

“This story is a slice of Americana,” Hoedel added. “It has a little John Wayne, a little Ronald Reagan and some Elvis. I think there’s something for eve

ryone, and there are some great lessons along the way.”

Hoedel forged a close friend ship with Strauss, she explained, which began years before he agreed to share his life story with her.

“I am proud to capture this amazing tale of hard work, per severance, dreams, love, life, family and flying on the pages of this book,” she said. “More than anything, I value the friendship that emerged despite the 40plus-year age difference. The life lessons from Ron will stay with me for a lifetime, and I hope with my readers as well.”

About the Author Sally A. Hoedel is the author of Elvis: Destined to Die Young. Focused primarily on explaining the genetic health issues the King dealt with, the book was the first in what will be at least a three-book series exploring aspects of Elvis Presley’s life. She has been honored with an Independent Publisher Book Award and a Pencraft Award for best nonfiction book of 2021. A lifelong Elvis fan and writer, she has a journalism degree from

which mental illness appeared to be a factor, The Washington Post noted some important distinc tions:

“This group was more likely to wield a weapon less lethal than a firearm. Six had toy guns; 3 in 10 carried a blade, such as a knife or a machete — weapons that rarely prove deadly to police offi cers. According to data main tained by the FBI and other organizations, only three officers have been killed with an edged weapon in the past decade. Nearly a dozen of the mentally distraught people killed were Military Veterans, many of them suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of their service, according to police or family members… And in 45 cases, police were called to help someone get medical treatment, or after the person had tried and failed to get treatment on his own.”

The U.S. Supreme Court, as might be expected, has thus far continued to immunize police against charges of wrongdoing when it comes to use of force

Third, with all the questionable funds flowing to police departments these days, why not use some of those funds to establish what one disability-rights activist describes as “a 911-type number dedi cated to handling mental-health emergencies, with community crisis-response teams at the ready rather than police officers.”

In the end, while we need to make encounters with police offi cers safer for people with suffer ing from mental illness or with disabilities, what we really need—as I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries—is to make encoun ters with police safer for all indi viduals all across the board.

Election Lies? Misleading Voters

The only forum for the Hallandale Beach Election was held last Thursday. It was organ ized by Hallandale resident Ms. Terri Dillard and members of Fellowship Church. She is a member of our CRA Advisory Board and local host of Hallandale Conversation FB. She arranged to have Glenna Milberg from Channel 10 moderate. The event had about fifty attendees and all the candidates partici pated. If you want to listen to it, visit her site on FB.

As a note, there will be no endorsement from the Sun Sentinel or other papers for Hallandale Beach as they are no longer covering Elections for cit ies under 50,000 residents. If you have questions about information you are receiving from can didates or an issue that is impor tant to you, please feel free to call me anytime. This Election is so important to keep us on the right path of stability, civility and fiscal responsibility. Misinformation is already out there, so please be aware.

Overall, every candidate was civil and positive except for the agitator, Keith London. He cer tainly has not changed his enjoy ment of being negative and attacking the City without any solutions. He actually mocked everyone for getting along. In fact, he is a large part of our prior problems. He simply cannot help himself from creating misinfor mation.

Primarily, he has sent out propaganda that suggests we have a $5 Million Dollar Reserve. That is blatantly false, in fact we have in overall Reserves funding of $21.8 Million Dollars. Actually, if it were $5 Million Dollars, we would be at a negative $700,000 Million Dollar reserve and insol

vency due to the $5.70 Million Dollar Lawsuit that is hanging over our heads due to his firing of Former City Manager Daniel Roseman for cause. He has truly harmed our City. Know why? He gambled with your tax dollars and knew he would not person ally be impacted.

This year, we have balanced our budget without using reserves. This amount is in line with the commission policy of 16% of the General Fund should be covered to provide for our ability to operate in case of emergencies. As a note, during the time he was in Office, the Reserves were reduced. By 2018, when Joy Adams was Mayor for a year, they had gone all the way to $8 Million Dollars, the lowest in the history of the City.

Many residents are not aware that each Enterprise Fund; Water, Sewer, Stormwater and Sanitation to name a few have Contingencies that work like reserves in the event of disasters or opera tion emergencies during the year. A good example of the use of these types of Reserves is a one year Sanitation Truck caught on fire. These trucks cost $300,000 and up. The Contingency Fund was used to replace it.

Another issue he has com plained about is the purchase of Green Vehicles, Tesla’s. These vehicles were purchased for $10 Thousand Dollars less than what they are being sold for now. Not much more than other Electric and Hybrid Vehicles. They are being used for our Detective Bureau, not “Top Brass.” These vehicles eventually cost less than gas and have the benefit of help ing the environment.

Another salient point when it comes to propaganda are the Budget and the Tax Rate. Over

allowance to buy dentures, hear ing aids and eyeglasses?

the past 5-10 years our Police Department has been operating with over twenty-two patrol vacancies. This is disgraceful. Currently, we only have five and on the way to fill the rest.

One of the recurring themes during the Forum was communi cation. I agree that making sure that our residents have access to information. It is one of the rea sons I write this column. Our City utilizes all types of tools to keep our residents up to date. Residents need to sign up for them on our website. We have many Social Media platforms and some Departments even have their own pages. We also have our own HB App. I actually worked to get it through the US Conference Of Mayors and it is called MyHB. You can report issues and get information on many issues.

Flooding and Water Issues were also one of the main topics. Sadly, over the past 8 years improvements were at a stand still. The dysfunction and having four different City Managers over a 4-year period created such instability. In fact, professionals did not even want to stay in the

City and Recruitment was at its lowest due to the negativity from the Dais.

Well over the past two years this has changed dramatically. We are currently replacing and upgrading our lift stations. We have executed a request for a Proposal for an Expansion of our Water Plant. We have a $20 Million Dollar Bond and are Awarding Proposals to replace Water Mains on both Three Islands Boulevard and Golden Isles Drive among other Major Water Supply Infrastructure. In the next few weeks, I will be writ ing more in-depth on the very impairment issue.

Economic Development was also a topic discussed. Every candidate except one actually discussed how well they believe we were doing in supporting new business and expanding oppor tunities. They all go back to the commuting issues when it comes to CRA Programs.

It was a very good Forum and

I left thinking we have some really great candidates. They all have different backgrounds. Some have been involved on City Boards. I hope no matter what the outcome, they all stay involved and work with the City addressing concerns and help make the City A Better Place!

Early Voting started this past Monday. It is taking place at our Community Cultural Center behind the Library at our City Hall Complex, located at 400 South Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009. There are other locations around the County as well. If you are registered in Broward County, you can vote at one of them. Also, if you have a Mail-In-Ballot and are concerned about it get ting in on time, there is a drop box at the Cultural Center. Make sure it is all filled out including our Eight Charter Amendments. As a reminder, we as a Commission are recommending them all!

As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out at my office: (954) 457-1318. On my Cell/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or email at: jcooper@cohb.org

As you shop for Medicare plans for you or your loved ones, I encourage you to look for ways to maximize your healthcare cov erage, while minimizing your costs, to help ensure the healthi est you in 2023 and for many years to come.
