Making Strides Walk-A-Thon To Thwart Breast Cancer
By Ira Liebowitz
“WE Florida Financial is dedicated to giving back to the community and raising aware ness about Breast Cancer”
A sea of pink converged Saturday in Downtown Fort Lauderdale as some 15,000 clad in the color of the day, a few with pink hair or butterfly wings, came out to honor loved ones and raise funds and awareness at the Annual Making Strides GetTogether at Huizenga Park to thwart Breast Cancer.
Unlike last year’s event, when attendees had to combat rain and slog through puddles, Mother Nature cooperated to grace them with a picture-perfect, cloudless morning. Aside from the weather, several of the fes tivities and presentations remained the same as well as a jubilant spirit and smiling faces.
WSVN7 Meteorologist Vivian Gonzales attended again this year.
The event kicked off with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from Pembroke Pines who performed a dignified American Flag Presentation. Folks on the amphi theater stage and milling about the park grounds, put their hands to their heart or saluted for the Pledge of Allegiance. Tiffani Dishner sang the National Walk-A Thon, Page 7A
Medicare Open Enrollment Period Is Here!
Get In Touch With The Team At Hallandale Medical Center To Prepare
By Austin Torres
The annual Medicare open enrollment period kicked off last week. From October 15th to December 7th all 64 million Americans enrolled in Medicare will have the option to review their current health and drug plans and make any changes that will better suit their needs. Any coverage changes during this period will go into effect Jan. 1, 2023. As part of the HG Doctors family, the team at Hallandale Medical Center knows how confusing it can be to make sense of all the Medicare plans available and encourages you to take this opportunity to learn about open enrollment, review your coverage plans, and ensure that you are optimizing your healthcare while also choosing options at a rea sonable cost.
During the open enrollment period, recipients eligible for Medicare will have the oppor tunity to revisit their current plan and decide whether or not it is the right plan for them. As our healthcare needs change over time, the services needed to best care for ourselves, or our loved ones, may need to be revisited. Open enrollment is the time to start looking at what health plans

“Potholes Are Not Partisan”
Please Do Your Part - As Every Single Vote Will Count
By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
It’s been an unusual couple of weeks here in Hallandale Beach. We have our Local Elections tak ing place and while the current Commission has been very vocal about what we don’t want, we do hope that the electors of our City understand that the future is in your hands. If you are like me, you probably can’t wait until next Wednesday. But please do your part as every single vote will count.
I hope you have already had the chance to Vote early. Early Voting is still taking place at our Cultural Center right behind City Hall on Southeast 3rd Street and Federal Highway until Sunday. You will also be able to drop off your Ballot. If you wait until Tuesday to Vote, please make sure you know where your Polling place is. In years past, we used to have 15 locations but now we only have three. There are three now in the City. One off of Parkview Drive in the Three Islands area at the Clubhouse of Towers of Ocean View, the Community Cultural Center and at Foster Park at the 600 block.
It seems that 6 years ago, our Elections and Political Climate brought out the worst in society. The Attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer wielding maniac intended for her sheds light on how bad it has truly got ten. Then the former President Trump’s son joking about it is over the top. Kanye West’s dis gusting Antisemitic Rhetoric about Jewish people set me over the top.
I typically do not get in this fray as a Mayor in a Non-Partisan Seat but not speaking out about this hatred is almost as bad as condoning it. We cannot all agree on every topic. There are good and bad policies and peo ple on both sides of the Isle. Republican, Democrat or NonPartisan, we all need to stand up
against these Extremists and Extreme Views. They are crip pling our country.
This Tuesday, I’m sure those of us that traversed throughout the City realize that traffic was pretty heavy and diverted off of both Federal Highway and Pembroke Road due to the visit of President Biden. As of the writing of this article, I am hoping that Tuesday went well and that there were no protests or worse incidents.
I received a call on Friday from the White House after evaluating many locations for President Biden’s Policy Presentation that we were one of the top choices. They loved our Facilities at OB Johnson Park and The Hepburn Center. As you can imagine, we were actually very proud of our Community and accomplishments. You can imagine the pride I felt as your Mayor, the feeling was fleeting. I realized the fast hard work we would need to perform to ensure
his trip to our City was safe. Our City Manager, our Chief Police Department and Parks Department were all hands-on deck working alongside the Secret Service.
The President was coming to South Florida for many reasons. Obviously, the Election is impor tant but to discuss the work he has done over the past year on Infrastructure. This topic is just as important if not even more important for our cities, state and country. Our City has been one of the prime examples of how to do things right and having shovel ready projects to leverage these programs.
I know many people have clouded Partisan Political ideas when it comes to these issues but after being in office for more than 20 years it is an amazing accomplishment that President Biden has moved forward with Infrastructure.
I have served under multiple Presidents: President Clinton,
President Bush, President Obama, President Trump and now finally, President Biden. This President finally passed signifi cant Legislation to invest in the future of America and American cities. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so cities like Hallandale Beach can Reinvest in our Infrastructure when it comes to Water, Sewer and Wastewater. In addition, there will be invest ments in broadband technolo gies, roadways, bridges, green infrastructure and the power grid hardening.
In Hallandale Beach, we know so well that hardening our facili ties and addressing Sea Level Rise is paramount. I still find it hard to believe there are those that are still deniers of climate. They need to come to our Intracoastal Waterway during The King Tide Season.
While the President, I am sure will speak on these Policy Issues, there are additional Investments
amazing that for the first time the cost of medicine is being addressed. The cost reduction In Insulin alone has impacted mil lions of lives across our country.
Some of us are Republicans and some are Democrats. There is one thing I always share, ”pot holes are not Partisan.” Infrastructure is Non-Partisan and this President didn’t just talk the talk, he got it done.
The conversation about Infrastructure couldn’t be timelier as we are poised to make Millions and Millions of Dollars of Investments in Infrastructure. Combined with our Taxpayer Dollars these State and Federal Resources are already being put to work. These Investments are critical for our future. Many of us know that we have had over 500+ Water Main Breaks. This topic has been brought up during the elections. While our Staff has been mobile and agile fixing and repairing many of our valves and pipes the time of band aid fixes that have been taking place in the past years is ending.
The end of the month we will be mobilizing construction on Lane Boulevard to replace our Main Sewer Line. On Three Islands, they will begin a replacement project for water mains. With our Commission, now that we are on the same page have approved Projects that have been sitting on the shelf for over 5 years plus, your Commission is not just talking the talk, but walking the walk. Get out and Vote, so we can continue our hard work.
As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out at my office: (954) 457-1318. On my Cell/ Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or

President Biden stopped at Hallandale Beach’s OB Johnson Park and The Hepburn Center on Tuesday to discuss the midterm election, as well as social security, Medicare, and prescription drug costs
Anthem. Speakers from the American Cancer Society, Sylvester Comprehensive Center and other organizations intro duced the occasion and shared info. “Creating a future free from Cancer runs deep.... Today we are celebrating the survivors and thrivers.” said a representative. That sentiment conveying caring and camaraderie was echoed throughout the day.
The ACS has fought Cancer for more than a century. During the past 30 years, Breast Cancer fatality has declined in women by 41 percent. Today there are some 3.8 million survivors of Breast Cancer. Each year some 280,000 succumb to the disease, about one in a hundred being men. The goal at this event is to raise $800,000.
Edward Aguilar, the main sponsor from Seminole Hard Rock, presented on stage a check for $100,000 to the ACS. Hard Rock has raised more than $1 Million Dollars to fight Cancer during the last nine years, it was noted. Like at last year’s event, for a $100 donation one was invited to be photographed smashing - that’s right, a pink guitar! Sort of like The Who’s Pete Townsend.
Purple robots towering at least seven feet tall added color to the already festive occasion.
Piquant sights highlighted the picturesque Riverwalk and the iconic Las Olas Boulevard, dot ted by yachts, café patios and verdant foliage. Air temperature seemed to be in the midseventies, but veered into the mid-eighties by late morning. Participants partook of cold bot tles of water handed out at inter vals along the 3-mile route.
At tribute boards people could post a message on a card, free of charge, honoring their loved ones who had succumbed to Cancer.
Here are a few of their comments: “WE Florida Financial is dedi cated to giving back to the com munity and raising awareness about Breast Cancer,” according to Hayley Campbell, Community and Social Media Specialist.
The Mijet family: Sharon, Nadine, Yvonne, Joy, Pat, Wayne, Arlene, Migie: “Lost Mijet Lee Roberts on July 7, 2022 after a difficult struggle. Gone too soon. In our hearts forever.”
Brittany Balom and Courtney Myles, the “Butterfly Girls,” from Miramar had pink wings on. “Supporting my mom!” Brittany commented.
Kristie Wilcox: “Breast Cancer affects us in many ways & more than one! Outfit Training supports BCA Month!” - Outfit Training
Success Manager.
John Pean Pean from Miami, Florida, noted he was there to “support a friend who is in Remission.”
Scoutmaster, Andres Alvarez, “We’re excited to be returning for our sixth year as Presenters Of The American Flag. This event, in my opinion, is the most impor
tant to help support our fight against Breast Cancer in our community. We’re blessed to be a part of it.”
Our canine population was well represented. Big and small, feisty and sheepish, Poodles, Chihuahuas, German Shepherds and more! This reporter had the privilege of having his devoted
Siberian Husky-Mix, Daisy, walk with him. Last year Daisy, to be 13 on November 22nd, had met a “sweet” lookalike named Brownie. Today she met Max and Nanook. Hopefully, this is not her “last Hoorah, “at a walk-a-thon. People love her and vice-versa! Rebecca said of her eightyear-old Siberian Husky,
Nanook, “she’s a funny person.”
Upon leaving, a few blocks away from the park a disc jockey on the sidewalk was playing fes tive music. Walking past, a hit song from the 1970’s piqued my attention.
“We are family” by Sister Sledge. Yeah, we are family. How appropriate!

Looking for a plump pumpkin to add to your family? If so, Gino (ID 660550) is waiting to meet you at the Humane Society of Broward County. Gino is 2 years old and a true sweetheart. He is short, but chunky, and could probably lose a few pounds. This lovebug was given up because no one wanted him in the divorce. Gino enjoys going to the dog park, playing in water, loves to be petted and is good with other dogs and kids ages 5 and up. He previously slept in bed with the kids, and he is good when left alone. Can this adorable fellow go home with you?
Goose (ID A660555) Is also looking for a forever home. This sweet 11/2 year old feline was given up because her family had too many pets and they wanted her to have a better life. She likes sleeping on plush blankets and enjoys being pet. Can this beauty be part of your family?

are available, as well as the serv ices, costs, and copays asso ciated with these plans. “Straight Medicare” plans tend to only cover medical expenses and typically do not entitle an insured to dental, eyeglass, hearing aids, or other benefits. If a “straight Medicare” insured wants dental benefits, they would have to pur chase a separate policy which then adds additional expense to the insured. Whereas, some Medicare Advantage plans not only include medical coverage, but also include dental coverage as well as other benefits as part of the package.
CarePlus Medicare Advantage plans, as an example, will include medical coverage, but may also include routine dental, vision, and hearing coverage as well as provide a monthly allowance for over-the-counter medicines.
Another benefit to some of these Medicare Advantage plans is that they may offer $0 copays for pri mary care and specialist visits.
Knowing which plan is best for you is important to ensure you have the proper coverages for your healthcare needs and at a price that is affordable. While some folks choose to stay with their current plan, there are those that may realize their current plan is not giving them the coverage they need at the price they can afford. Doing your due diligence during open enrollment is very important to ensuring you are maximizing your benefits and getting the most for your money.
For those interested in enroll ing into straight Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan, Hallandale Medical Center accepts a wide range of plans including most major insurance plans. As Hallandale Medical Center offers geriatric medicine they work hard to try and con tract with most Medicare Advantage plans, including CarePlus and Humana Medicare Advantage plans. Since Hallandale Medical Center offers primary care, behavioral health, podiatry, and dental services, they try to contract with insurers to allow their patients to utilize all the services under one roof.
According to Randy Kirshbaum, Chief Operating Officer at Hallandale Medical Center, “we do our best to ensure that our patients can utilize all our serv ices under the roof. For exam ple, our CarePlus and Humana Medicare Advantage patients have access to medical, dental, and behavioral health services to ensure we are doing our best at providing a 360-degree approach to their healthcare.” In 2023, some CarePlus and Humana Medicare Advantage plans will
including dental crowns, root canal, complete or partial den tures, as well as many other services all at a $0 copay to their insureds. While Hallandale Medical Center accepts Medicare Advantage Health Maintenance Organization plans (HMO) plans, they also accept Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans.
While Medicare Open enroll ment offers an opportunity for current Medicare participants to review and change their plans, those of you soon to turn 65 are also encouraged to prepare. To stay up to date we strongly rec ommend you carefully review any Medicare correspondence you receive in the mail. Every year people enrolled in a Medicare
rials from their plans like the “Evidence of Coverage” (EOC) and “Annual Notice of Change” (ANOC). These notices are important to review because they include crucial information regarding price and coverage changes. For additional infor mation, current and prospective patients can also contact Hallandale Medical Center to be connected with a licensed insur ance agent who is able to answer any questions regarding Medicare Benefits.
Medicare Advantage plan pre miums are expected to see a decline in average premiums.
According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the projected average premiums will drop by nearly 8% to $18 per month next year. In recent years Medicare Advantage plans have experienced a sharp increase in popularity with almost 32 million estimated enrollees as of next year. Many people are drawn to Medicare Advantage plans because they offer additional benefits not cov
ered in traditional Medicare, including vision, hearing, and While Medicare Advantage larity it is important to do your research to find the plan that fits your needs and budget. To bet ter serve our patients, and assist them in maneuvering the Medicare landscape, Hallandale Medical Center helps patients get in contact with licensed insurance agents who can answer any questions they may have regard ing the different plans available.

You should never attempt to remove mold without a licensed professional, it is unsafe, and hazardous to your health. Mold thrives in dark, damp environ ments such as under the kitchen or bathroom sinks, in unven tilated basements, and closed in laundry rooms. It can even be found behind drywall. Because of the heat and humidity which Florida is known for, it provides a perfect environment for mold to thrive. Vigilance is key when it comes to mold remediation. Bleach and paint alone will not eliminate the problem, only hide it, allowing it to grow unseen and spread. This causes more dam age to your home and health over time. People and pets all respond differently to mold and mildew. For some, it may be watery eyes, itchy throat, cough, or skin irritation. Confusion, dis orientation, and even halluci nations can also be signs of mold exposure. For others, exposure to mold can cause very serious, even life-threatening health problems. When it comes to your health and the safety of your loved ones, trust the experts at Titan Restoration Inc. to have you breathing easier, in a mold-free environment.
Once the mold has been iden tified, the mold remediation proc ess begins. Titan Restoration Inc. will dry out the affected area
Followed by thoroughly cleans ing and sanitizing the affected areas using antimicrobial agents effective for mold-eliminating and prevention. HEPA- air purifiers are used to capture any airborne mold spores, leaving you with clean air. Green cleaners are used for mildew removal. Since mold spores are airborne and invisible to the naked eye it is necessary to deep clean the air ducts, carpets, furnishings, and
upholstery. Homeowners’ insur ance covers the cost in most cases following water damage. These services are offered yearround, and it is recommended to have these done once a year to remove allergens, bacteria, dirt, and grime buildup that occurs naturally over time. These serv ices are recommended more fre quently if you have pets, suffer from allergies, or are a smoker, to ensure peace of mind and healthier living. After the repairs
are completed and your home or business is restored to its preloss condition, a Florida statelicensed Mold Inspector will be sent out to do a final inspection, to ensure all mold concerns were effectively eliminated. Titan Restoration Inc. takes pride in providing the best service expe rience to its customers from start to finish. Their goal is to have your property back to its pre-loss condition while taking the stress off you.

Artistic & Environmentally Beneficial Reef Deployed off Hollywood Beach
Ocean Rescue Alliance (ORA), in partnership with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), has deployed a 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project site, its first in Broward County, off the coast of Hollywood Beach with 20 oceanfriendly artificial reef modules.
The Hollywood site installation took place on Tuesday with a barge carrying the modules headed to specific permitted sites off the coast of Hollywood.
The Hollywood artificial reef is the second for Ocean Rescue Alliance and bringing the total number of artificial reef struc tures deployed in the ocean off South Florida’s coast to 100 since the 1000 Mermaids project was launched 5 years ago.
1000 Mermaids is a monu mental public eco-art project in the form of an artificial reef that serves as an underwater destina tion for coral restoration, ecotourism, and research. The arti ficial reef sculptures, weighing between 2200-3300 lbs each, come outfitted with the patented “Coral Lok” system allowing coral to be out-planted directly to the structures. The structures,
coral restoration opportunities. They will be placed just a few miles southeast of the Port Everglades Inlet and will be capable of being a recipient site for transplanted corals. Of the 20 artificial reef structures being deployed, 5 feature artistic sculptures such as mermaids, a swim up selfie mermaid tail, and
reef ecosystem and serve as a real attraction for the dive com munity,” says Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy, who also serves as chairperson of the city’s CRA. “These artificial reef modules will entice reef fish and support coral restoration, while at the same time being beautiful pieces of art divers will want to come and see
and be photographed with. We hope to expand it in the future to offer additional underwater sites for beachgoers to swim to from shore.”
Ocean Rescue Alliance’s 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project works to bring awareness to the growing problems affecting our natural reefs. This project fuses art and science with artistic reef sculptures that look and function like natural reefs.
“The Hollywood Beach reef
site creates an opportunity to connect the community back to the marine environment,” says Shelby Thomas, Co-Founder and CEO of Ocean Rescue Alliance. “More importantly, this reef site will continuously host and pro tect marine life while facilitating unique opportunities for edu cation and outreach programs with organizations such as the South Florida Association of Environmental Professionals, The Reef Discovery Center, Nova Southeastern University and many more.”
“It has been a beautiful dream 5 years in the making to help bring this revolutionary project to life in our backyard. We’re extremely excited to provide citi zen science opportunities ena bling anyone from a middle school student to a veteran to help out-plant coral fragments while diving the reef,” says Evan Snow, Co-Founder & COO of the Ocean Rescue Alliance & 1000 Mermaids Project.
