Unfortunately, during the pandemic, many parents have delayed scheduling annual physical exams that allow doctors to monitor weight gain.

Unhealthy eating habits, boredom, depression and less physical activity than normal, combined with extra screen time, have led to a dangerous weight gain in children during the pandemic. Over the last eight months, Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC), which offers a variety of services that care for disabled and chronically ill children and adolescents throughout Broward County, has seen a surge in the number of children and adolescents who are diagnosed as overweight or obese.

To stem that trend, Helena Gaviria, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician at CDTC’s Primary Care Center, has launched a pilot program called Bee Healthy, a hybrid of educational and counseling services, combined with healthy eating tips and a series of easy to follow exercise recommendations.

We Americans are a thankful people. On Veterans Day we thank the brave men and women of our country that served in the military. On Memorial Day, we show our gratitude to those courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending our liberties and democratic lifestyle. On Labor Day, we express our appreciation to the industrious American workforce, the people who keep the wheels of our economy turning. On other days, we pause to thank different historic individu-

als who have made valuable contributions to our nation.

And then there is Thanksgiving. The day when we thank G-d for enabling all the above—and for everything else He so kindly does for us.

There is no doubt that this great country’s historically unprecedented success and prosperity is due to the fact that its Founding Fathers recognized that there is a Supreme Being who provides and cares for every creature. They understood that since G-d sustains and gives life to every being, it follows that

every being has certain “unalienable rights” upon which no government can impinge.

These strong morals upon which our republic was founded express themselves to this day in American life. Looking at the dollar bill and seeing “In G-d We Trust” is a reassurance that, as a people, we still recognize and acknowledge the Source of all our achievements.

End the Government’s War on America’s Military Veterans

The 2020 presidential election may be over, but nothing has really changed.

The U.S. government still poses the greatest threat to our freedoms.

More than terrorism, more than domestic extremism, more than gun violence and organized crime, even more than the perceived threat posed by any single politician, the U.S. government remains a greater menace to the life, liberty and property of its citizens than any of the socalled dangers from which the government claims to protect us.

This threat is especially pronounced for America’s military veterans, especially that portion of the population that exercises their First Amendment right to speak out against government wrongdoing.

Consider: we raise our young people on a steady diet of militarism and war, sell them on the idea that defending freedom abroad by serving in the military is their patriotic duty, then when they return home, bruised and battle-scarred and committed to defending their freedoms at home, we often treat them like criminals merely for exercising those rights they risked their lives to defend.

The government even has a name for its war on America’s veterans: Operation Vigilant Eagle.

As first reported by the Wall Street Journal, this Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program tracks military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and characterizes them as extremists and potential domestic terrorist threats because they may be “disgruntled, disillusioned or suffering from the psychological effects of war.”

Coupled with the DHS’ dual reports on Rightwing and Leftwing “Extremism,” which broadly define extremists as individuals, military veterans and groups “that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely,” these tactics bode ill for anyone seen as opposing the government.

Yet the government is not merely targeting individuals who are voicing their discontent so much as it is taking aim at individuals trained in military warfare.

Where there’s smoke, there’s bound to be fire.

And the government’s efforts to target military veterans whose views may be perceived as “antigovernment” make clear that something is afoot.

In recent years, military servicemen and women have found themselves increasingly targeted for surveillance, censorship, threatened with incarceration or involuntary commitment, labeled as extremists and/or mentally ill, and stripped of their Second Amendment rights.

An important point to consider, however, is that under the guise of mental health treatment and with the complicity of government psychiatrists and law enforcement officials, these veterans are increasingly being portrayed as threats to national security.

In light of the government’s efforts to lay the groundwork to weaponize the public’s biomedical data and predict who might pose a threat to public safety based on mental health sensor data (a convenient means by

which to penalize certain “unacceptable” social behaviors), encounters with the police could get even more deadly, especially if those involved have a mental illness or disability coupled with a military background.

That the government is using the charge of mental illness as the means by which to immobilize (and disarm) these veterans is diabolical. With one stroke of a magistrate’s pen, these veterans are being declared mentally ill, locked away against their will, and stripped of their constitutional rights.

If it were just being classified as “anti-government,” that would be one thing.

Unfortunately, anyone with a military background and training is also now being viewed as a heightened security threat by police who are trained to shoot first and ask questions later.

Feeding this perception of veterans as ticking time bombs in need of intervention, the Justice Department launched a pilot program in 2012 aimed at training SWAT teams to deal with confrontations involving highly

trained and often heavily armed combat veterans.

The result?

Police encounters with military veterans often escalate very quickly into an explosive and deadly situation, especially when SWAT teams are involved.

Given the government’s increasing view of veterans as potential domestic terrorists, it makes one think twice about government programs encouraging veterans to include a veterans designation on their drivers’ licenses and ID cards.

Hailed by politicians as a way to “make it easier for military veterans to access discounts from retailers, restaurants, hotels and vendors across the state,” it will also make it that much easier for the government to identify and target veterans who dare to challenge the status quo.

After all, no one is spared in a police state.

Eventually, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People, we all suffer the same fate.

It stands to reason that if the government can’t be bothered to

According to the CDC, overweight is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) at or above the 85th percentile and below the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age and sex. Obesity is classified for those with a BMI at or above the 95th percentile.

Through Bee Healthy, they receive complimentary tools and resources such as grocery bags filled with fresh and nutritious food, scales for at-home weigh-ins and measuring cups with sectioned plates for portion-control. Easy to follow educational books offer creative and healthy eating options and inspiring advice geared toward transforming poor habits into long-term health.

CDTC is currently raising funds to expand the program through grants and

abide by its constitutional mandate to respect the citizenry’s rights—whether it’s the right to be free from government surveillance and censorship, the right to due process and fair hearings, the right to be free from roadside strip searches and militarized police, or the right to peacefully assemble and protest and exercise our right to free speech— then why should anyone expect the government to treat our nation’s veterans with respect and dignity It’s time to end the government’s war on the American people, and that includes military veterans.

Certainly, veterans have enough physical and psychological war wounds to overcome without adding the government to the mix. Although the U.S. boasts more than 20 million veterans who have served in World War II through the present day, large numbers of veterans are impoverished, unemployed, traumatized mentally and physically, struggling with depression, suicide, and marital stress, homeless, subjected to sub-par treatment at clinics and hospitals, and left to molder while their paperwork piles up within Veterans Administration offices.

At least 60,000 veterans died by suicide between 2008 and 2017.

On average, 6,000 veterans kill themselves every year, and the numbers are on the rise.

The plight of veterans today— and their treatment at the hands of the U.S. government— remains America’s badge of shame.

So here’s a suggestion: if you really want to do something to show your respect and appreciation for the nation’s veterans, why not skip the parades and the flag-waving and instead go exercise your rights—the freedoms that those veterans swore to protect—by pushing back against the government’s tyranny.

It’s time the rest of the nation did its part to safeguard the freedoms we too often take for granted.

Freedom is not free.

Black Activists Praise Presidential Performance on Jobs Employment Recovery Called “a Testament to Trumponomics” Project 21 - Black Leadership Network

President Donald Trump’s economic policies were responsible for last month’s improved employment numbers, said members of the Project 21 black leadership network, who credited the president with reviving an economy devastated by COVID19 lockdowns and with helping the black community get back on its feet.

“Even in a pandemic, the freemarket policies of the Trump Administration are growing the economy and benefiting America - especially black America,” said Project 21 Co-Chairman Horace Cooper.

“The October jobs report provided further great news about America’s super-V recovery from the China-virus lockdown,” said Project 21 member Deroy Murdock. “After rocketing to 14.7 percent in April, unemployment has tumbled back down to 6.9 percent. While this is higher than anyone would like, jobs are returning to the economy at a much faster pace than anyone imagined. Last month, 638,000 more Americans found work.”

The American workforce added 638,000 new jobs in October - causing the overall unemployment rate to drop a full percentage point to 6.9%, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The total number of people entering the workforce in October was approximately 1.5 million, with total workforce participation increasing to 61.7%.

Additionally, the U-4 alternative unemployment measure that includes discouraged workers who left the workforce - often considered the true unemployment indicator - also fell a full percentage point to a comparable 7.2%. This figure has dropped 4.2% since June.

“All of this is a testament to Trumponomics,” added Murdock. “President Donald J. Trump’s tax cuts, regulatory

“Much of the economic uncertainty and instability aren’t the result of COVID-19,” noted Green. “They’re actually due to the response to COVID-19.

Despite the refusal of several liberal mayors and governors to reopen their respective economies, the economic policies of

the Trump Administration continue to see significant gains.

Actually, there is one particular mitzvah which is completely devoted to expressing gratitude - the mitzvah of bikkurim (Deuteronomy 26:1–12). During the Temple era, every farmer was commanded to bring to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem the first fruits which ripened in his orchard. There he would recite a passage thanking G-d for the Land and its bountiful harvest, and the fruits were given to the kohanim (priests). The Midrash extols the great virtue of this mitzvah, going so far as to say that the Land of Israel was given to the Jews as a reward for the mitzvah of bikkurim they would observe after entering the Land!

While the importance of expressing deserved gratitude is self-understood, it is difficult to comprehend the special significance of bikkurim. Isn’t the Jewish

day jam-packed with “thank you”s? The first words we utter when waking in the morning, Modeh Ani, expresses our thanks to G-d for returning our souls to our bodies. Thrice daily during the course of prayer, we thank G-d for everything imaginable.

Before and after eating, we thank G-d for the food.

There is even a blessing recited upon exiting the restroom, thanking G-d for normal bodily function!

With all the thanking which occurs on a daily basis, why the need for a specific mitzvah commandment to emphasize the point? And why the great reward for this particular form of expressing thanks?

The Rebbe points out one obvious difference between bikkurim and all the other ways we thank G-d: bikkurim involves more than just words - it requires a commitment; the gratitude must express itself in deeds. Bikkurim implies that our thankfulness to G-d cannot remain in the realm of emotions, thoughts, or even speech, but must also move us to

action.

While the mitzvah of bikkurim in its plainest sense is not practicable today, its lesson is timeless. Our gratitude to G-d must express itself in the actions of our daily life.

Giving back the “first of our fruit,” the choicest share of the crop, is the only appropriate way to thank G-d for giving us all our fruit.

So this Thanksgiving, in addition to saying thanks, let’s give thanks, with a bit more than just words. Let’s show G-d our appreciation by being more kind and generous, giving to the people and good causes around us!

The Election & Flooding: Hallandale Beach Dodged Another Bullet

Our City dodged another bullet. As our neighbors to the west were inundated, we were saved from the major flooding. I along with many of our residents and businesses feared the worst, both of my daughters live next to lakes that both were encroaching on their homes. They always felt secure out west, not living near the ocean. Sadly, I reminded them the west has seen it’s share of flooding over the years. These cities just like coastal areas are all being faced with the continued threat of higher water tables.

Our staff monitors our lakes and drainage systems during large rain events. They had to open the lock to the south in partnership with the Water Management District. We also make sure the system to our north is operational that is tied to Chaves Lake. The pumping station located along Interstate I-95, is the main system that covers Pembroke Park and Hollywood.

As our City works to address increased flooding, our partnerships with our neighbors and other governmental agencies will be critical. We all have a symbiotic relationship when it comes to water. We are all facing the same issues. In the coming months, our City will be laying out a plan to ensure our infrastructure can face the challenges of climate change. We will need your help in understanding simply how paramount a government obligation bond will be to ensure we can make the investment in our future.

Past flooding like this had a big potential to happen again during this storm. The City of Hallandale Beach’s flooding mitigation projects over the past decade along with the partnership with the Water Management District helped lessen the storms impact.

I am extremely humbled to be serving as your Mayor for the next four years. The GO Bond is just one reason why I ran. I also am still following the COVID-19 crisis and will continue to protect our residents based on sound science.

I will continue to make sure our Police Department is funded and negotiate their contract which is two years over due, we also need to get our budget under control. We need to get busy planning our top priorities and what measures we can take to bring back transparency in the process.

Ironically, like the Nation, we are still waiting on the final recount for seat 3 race. At the writing of this article, it was not 100% certain whether Commissioner Anabelle Lima

Taub won. The race was under a one percent difference which triggers a recount. The race came down to Cabrera and Taub.

There were 6 candidates with Taub receiving 31.29% and Cabrera 31.20%, a razor thin difference. I certainly am supporting Taub 100%. There were so many in the race, that splits all the votes.

Commissioner Lazarow won her seat back; this race was not razor thin, but could have been won had there not been so many running for this seat. The former Vice Mayor went into the race knowing he would not win. He was still struggling with health issues, so he did not walk or work early voting. I personally had asked him not to run since he truly simply wanted to see if he still had followers and wanted

to unseat Lazarow since she was tied to the scandal that caused him to lose his seat. I wanted him to support Dmitriy Yakubovich who had a real chance to unseat her. He still received 2,405 votes.

At least he received a nod and came in where he predicted, in third place with 16.42% of the vote.

Ruel Miles pulled 14.69% (2,151) of the votes. He is a businessman that has a case against the City over Foster Park. He worked extremely hard but only got into the race late. Dmitriy Yakubovich came in second with 27.58% (4,039) of the votes. He is a smart and caring businessman and has been the President of the Beach Club Master Association. Many residents told me personally that reside there how he has done an amazing

job. I was hoping he would be a new breath of fresh air in seat 4.

We could have rid our City from the influences of the past and move forward with young future leaders. Michele won her seat back with 37.66% of the vote.

The supervisor’s office does not expect any surprises, so it seems that the commission will remain the same. We will have to work through the wounds of the election that regretfully are deep rooted. 143 talent agents representing thousands of performing artists presented 99 previews of shows ready for when the curtain goes up again.

When the Curtain Rises Again Performers Are Lining Up to Come to Aventura Arts & Cultural Center The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center’s General Manager, Jeff Kiltie and Events Services Manager, Scott Gutierrez-Miller recently took part in a three-day virtual conference presented by The Florida Professional Presenters Consortium, known simply as Florida Presenters which proves entertainers are as eager as audiences are to see a return to live performances.

During the conference, 143 talent agents representing thousands of performing artists presented 99 previews of shows ready for when the curtain goes up again. Administrators from 60 venues across Florida attended the on-line cultural trade show presented by the statewide organization that represents nonprofit, publicly owned and oper-

ated performing arts facilities.

“We were among the first to close when the Pandemic began and it has taken careful planning to reopen,” said Kiltie. “We work closely with performers and their managers several months to a year in advance to schedule shows. As the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center prepares to reopen, the health & safety of our guests, artists, staff and volunteers are our top priorities. Our health & safety guidelines have been developed in conjunction with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic and follow guidance of local and state health officials and the CDC.” The Broward Center for the Performing Arts manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center,

in the first weeks of the Pandemic, the Broward Center Director of Programming and Florida Presenters VP Jill Kratish instigated a weekly Zoom call for Florida Presenters members.

Started as a weekly check-in to compare notes and provide moral support, 40-50 people a week would join the call, soon talent agents and product vendors were being invited as special guests. The pivot to an online virtual conference was a natural outgrowth of those weekly Zoom calls.

South Arts and the MiamiDade County Department of Cultural Affairs sponsored the event enabling Florida Presenters to offer the entire program to its members and the invited talent agents entirely free

of charge. The conference utilized the Event Hub and Zoom platforms and three “Virtual Room Managers” were hired from the Miami area to manage the technical aspects of the online presentations.

Planning for Summit 2.0 in September 2021 is already underway. Whether it will be a traditional in-person event or a virtual event is unknown at this time, but the organization is pleased with the results of the inaugural Summit.

The City of Hollywood is committed to reducing our environmental impact and becoming more sustainable. One step the City has taken in achieving this goal is to ban the use of nonbiodegradable containers, like plastics and expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), for serving food products.

On October 1, 2018, any establishment located east of the Intracoastal Waterway selling food intended for consumption by customers off the premises of their business, was included in the ban. On October 21st of this year, the City Commission approved a ban on single-use plastics and polystyrene on Cityowned properties and by City vendors. City-owned properties include community centers, Hollywood City Hall, Fire Stations and more. A six month grace period is now in effect, prior to citation for violations.
