Home For The Holidays What To Know Before You Travel For The Holidays Since many Floridians were unable to travel last year, it’s unlikely that higher gas prices will keep them from hitting the holiday road While rising Vaccination rates against COVID-19 have increased travelers’ comfort levels, most Americans are still opting to stay home this holiday season but holiday travel levels have increased, according to a new national survey commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) conducted

by Morning Consult.

The survey found that 29% of Americans are likely to travel for Thanksgiving and 33% are likely to travel for Christmas - an increase from 21% and 24%, respectively, compared to 2020.

the holidays expect to drive, but rising gas prices may dampen those plans.

“While vaccines have helped travelers feel more comfortable, rising gas prices and continued concerns about the Pandemic are making many Americans hesitant to travel during the holidays. Despite a slight expected uptick in holiday travel this year, hotels will continue to face economic fallout from the Pandemic, underscoring the need for targeted federal relief, such as the Save Hotel Jobs Act, to support the industry and its workforce until travel fully returns,” said American Hotel & Lodging Association President and CEO Chip Rogers. Despite being among the hardest hit, hotels are the only segment of the hospitality and leisure industry yet to

receive direct Pandemic relief from Congress. That is why AHLA and UNITE HERE, the largest hospitality workers’ union in North America, joined forces to call on Congress to pass the bipartisan Save Hotel Jobs Act to provide critical support to hotels and their workers during this crucial period.

Apprenticeships offer paid, relevant workplace experience while acquiring the skills and credentials that employers value

Looking For A Great Job? Apprenticeships Are Creating High-Paying Jobs The Board of County Commissioners presented a Proclamation at the November 16th Commission meeting recognizing National Apprenticeship Week which runs now through November 21st.

The County will honor construction apprenticeship programs that contribute to building a pipeline of high-quality and skilled workers for the future of our economy.

Construction companies doing business with the County are required to use apprentices under a program introduced

by Mayor Steve Geller and approved by the County Commission. The program began on April 5, 2021 and requires that 12% of labor hours on County-funded construction projects be performed by apprentices. “My number one priority is to create high-paying jobs in Broward County. There is a shortage of skilled labor for construction projects and this program creates opportunities for training and employment,” said Mayor Geller. The requirement applies to construction projects valued over $5 million.

Apprenticeship programs must be registered with the Florida Department of Education to qualify.

Apprenticeships offer paid, relevant

workplace experience while acquiring the skills and credentials that employers value. Apprentices earn a paycheck while learning from day one, and gain workplace-relevant skills in the field of their choice. Ninety-Five percent of apprentices retain employment after completing an apprenticeship program.

Mayor Geller will be holding a trade meeting with educators and employers to promote the apprenticeship program on November 18th as there are more than 72 million apprentice job openings in the workforce nationwide. “Many of the vacancies remain unfilled because companies cannot find people with the right skills or trades,” said Sandy Michael McDonald, the Director of the Office of Economic and Small Business Development (OESBD). OESBD coordinates the County’s Construction Apprenticeship Program with the intent to support, build relationships and educate the public and community partners about available opportunities within the construction industry.

Apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where

employers can develop and prepare their future workforce, and individuals can obtain paid work experience, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationallyrecognized credential. It includes: • Paid Job - Apprentices are paid employees who produce high-quality work while they learn skills that enhance their employers’ needs.

• On-the-Job Learning - Develops skilled workers through structured learning in a work setting.

• Classroom Learning - Improves job-related skills through education in a classroom setting.

24-48 hours, then remove the ham from the refrigerator and the ham gets to room temperature for about 30-45 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 325˚F, remove the ham from the foil and the film, return the ham to the foil wrapping and place it in an oven-safe roasting pan. Roll the foil down, leaving 2 inches of foil around the bottom of the ham. Place the roasting pan with the ham in the oven on the lower rack and heat it uncovered for 60-75 minutes, until it starts to brown. While the ham is cooking, make the glaze.

To make the glaze, in a medium sauce pot, whisk the: fruit spread, rum, cola, Worcestershire Sauce, Dijon Mustard and Salt until they are well incorporated, bring it to a boil then reduce the heat to medium. Simmer over medium heat for 10

minutes and then remove it from the heat, allowing it to cool down to room temperature. During the last 15 minutes of cooking, glaze the ham every 5 minutes.

40 Year Safety Inspections: What We Are Doing At The State & Local Level

Last week I had the opportunity to host a meeting to discuss what cities can do in light of Broward County’s recommendations to address the 40 Year Safety Inspection Program. The task force established by Mayor Steve Geller had a chance to work alongside State Representatives Gottlieb, LaMarca, Senator Book, engineers, condo board members, property managers, attorneys and other elected officials. Our group was not the only group that met in South Florida. MiamiDade County had a task force, the Florida Bar and Board of Rules and Appeals have all convened to evaluate what policies could be changed to improve building safety. All these recommendations are headed to Tallahassee where we are all hoping that the laws will be adopted to address building inspections and regulations governing condominiums. The big question is, do they have the political will to make changes?

I invited Hollywood City Commissioner Caryl Schumann who also served on the county’s task force to our city to discuss next steps. Her Building Official and Director of Development Services joined with our Building Official Jackson, Director Leroy, City Manager Earle, Assistant City Manager Ragunoon, Commissioner Anabelle Taub and Vice Mayor Butler to discuss the county’s recommendations but to specifically see what policies and municipalities may be able to adopt in the case that the state does not make any changes.

One big change is not waiting every 10 years for building inspections. Right now, it is 40 and 50. This is a very long time for buildings particularly along the coast. In many cases buildings also do not perform regular maintenance and put off repairs since they are not done.

Hollywood has already reached out to the Board of Rules and Appeals who said they can do 5 but still must follow BORA’s 10 year. Hollywood’s philosophy I believe is sound since it will not matter what they need to do in ten years on a building, which coincides with every 5 years. While buildings will have an added cost of inspection their residents and the city will

We also spoke about how to address what has been dubbed as “engineer shopping.” This is where a building hires an engineer but does not like the report that was delivered. It may be more conservative and the work requires more than the building wants to pay for in repairs.

They hire another engineer in hopes that it comes in with less rigid requirements to do those repairs. The concern is as a City without the reports we can only take the one that is submitted and sealed. Which one is right? The answer is both so long as they are both sealed by an engineer.

Both staffs will be researching this, but the consensus was requiring every report to be submitted and may subject cities to more liability. It was discussed that we can post the state specialists lists that show who the licensed engineers are in the state. Architects cannot submit safety reports; they must be licensed in engineering and electrical specialties.

The other item that came up is the utilization of our Code Enforcement

Departments. Hollywood is developing a self-inspection model. Condos are being encouraged to perform an annual visual inspection. This is in line with the County Task Force recommendations that each building does reserved studies and funds them. It also ties to the recommendation that condo managers must report concerns to the cities and condo owners. In addition, I preferred the idea that the board of Rules and Appeals Checklist must be sent out to every condo along with every unit owner’s tax bill.

One issue that we heard about were extension requests. BORA is frowning on them. They believe that condos have had plenty of time to get the inspections done.

They are ending up in the special magistrate’s courts and fines are being levied at $1,000 dollars a day.

Gas Prices - Gas prices surged in October and are likely to remain elevated through the holiday season. The average price for gasoline in Florida was $3.28 per gallon on Monday, November 8th.
