A Peaceful Holiday Season
Let’s All Unite to Support Laws That Protect Innocent Lives
By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
While the election season is finally finishing up, we can now take a pause and pray for a peaceful holiday season. Sadly, this past weekend we once again heard the news of a mass shoot ing at a night club that celebrates diversity and is known to cater to the LGBTQ community. Ironically this past weekend marked the memorial for individuals in the LGBTQ community killed due to their Identity, Transgender Remembrance Day. The gunman enteredintheclubkillingfiveand injuring 25 before he was sub dued by patrons. It is still not clear if this was a hate crime, but the shooter had an incident beforeoverabombthreat.
What a tragedy for Colorado Springs and the rest of our coun try. When will these senseless home-grown attacks stop?
Colorado does have a new Red Flag Law that allows family members, doctors, and law enforcement to request a judge to remove guns from individuals
deemed to be at risk of harming themselvesorothers.
Florida passed a Red Flag Law after the Parkland shooting. Since it was enacted there have been over 8000 individuals banned from owning or purchas ing guns. It has been found that these laws are working around the state. This law was a partisan law that then Governor Scott touted as a great example of what can be done to address school violence and could be a blueprint for the nation. After it was passed the NRA filed a law suit and went after every Republicanthatsupportedit.
Even on the national level due to the NRA there has not been an ability to pass this and other common-sense rules. While we have these laws it goes back to the same thing, “If you see something, Say something. “We also need to speak up and sup porttheselaws.
I have a concealed weapons permit. I have had it for years. I was robbed at gun point in my
home years ago. At that time my husband commuted, and I was at home alone weekly with the kids. After that horrific event we decided we both would apply for our concealed weapons permit. It empowered me to feel more secure in our home. If you had asked me before this if I would ever shoot or own a gun, I would haverespondedno.
A few years later we owned a retail franchise with another cou ple. At that time, we did not have all the online banking systems and quite often had to make cash deposits in drop boxes. At no time was I without my gun. We also went on long boating trips all across the Bahamian Islands. Out at sea on a large boat protection was essential, as you would never know who you maycomeacross.
We are responsible gun own ers. The super majority of owners
are. It is those individuals that are irresponsible, mentally ill, and simply criminals that have caused most of the violence. I have lobbied since 2006 with Mayor Against Illegal Guns, now Everytown For Gun Safety. The genesis of these organization was a result of Congress not reinstating the assault rifle ban of 1994.
Without the ban many auto matic weapons flooded our streets. It meant now criminals had easy access and our police departments could be out gunned by guns that were meant for war time. To this day I along with many individuals cannot imagine why we need these guns in our streets. And now as a society are seeing the results. Massshooting.
The laws we are trying to enact are common sense. They address the ability to have
access to guns which have detachable magazines and many gun loopholes. They address gun registrations of existing assault rifles and firearms. Since it was not reauthorized 37% of police departments reported an increase in shooting and mass fatalities.
While many are celebrating the election of a Republican majority, I am asking every Floridian to understand that these laws are critical to per sever. Do not be fooled that it is an attack on our right to bear arms. It is all about NRA funded campaigns across the Nation. It isaboutmoneyandbusiness.
Over this holiday let’s all unite to support laws that protect innocent lives. Too many families are sitting around their tables withoutlovedones.
Wishing you and yours a won derfulandblessedThanksgiving!

In conjunction with the exhi bition, the museum will partner with Ten-Time Emmy AwardWinning Producer and Director, Marlon Johnson to produce a documentary highlighting the art ist and will partner with a vast network of scholars to present a series of public programs. The museum will also publish an accompanying exhibition cata logue.
Opening this month is Kanaval, a retrospective by pho tographer, filmmaker, Curator and writer Leah Gordon that documents twenty years of Carnival in Haiti. Curated by MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford, the exhibition consists of a series of black-and-white photographs taken on a mechanical medium formatcamera.
The images are contextual ized by a series of oral histories relayed by various troupe lead ers, who also oversee the design of the costume and generate the narratives surrounding Carnival. Their stories reflect the wealth of invention, fable and selfgenerated mythology prevalent in much of Haitian culture. The photographs will be accom panied by a new feature-length documentary on the carnival pro viding a kinetic counterpoint to
theportraits.
“I’m excited to bring Kanaval to MOCA,” said Adeze Wilford, MOCA Curator. “For decades Leah has documented and helped to platform a people’s history of Haiti through her pho tographs. This exhibition brings that practice further through her new film that provides an incredi ble perspective to an intergen erational conversation about tra ditionthatiseverevolving.”
Also on view will be VantaBlack’s To What Lengths, which will be open to the public on MOCA Plaza through January 20th, 2023. Selected in MOCA’s 2022 Open Call to artists for its “Art on the Plaza” series, To What Lengths will showcase a key component of VantaBlack’s artistic practice by reflecting on legacy building and preservation as foundational to Black culture and other diasporic peoples. The South Florida-based artist will explore how ideas about legacy are woven into everyday actions by activating five palm trees on the MOCA Plaza with large-scale braids, adorned with beads, metal, and artificial sunflowers and gardenias. The braids of each tree will follow stylings rep resentative of the women in VantaBlack’sfamily.
“Hair grooming through differ ent braiding techniques has been passed down through the matri archs of my family,” said VantaBlack. “It is a vehicle for
sharing oral history, bond build ing between generations and a form of caregiving, amongst many other traditions. The posi tioning of one body between another creates a space of vul nerability. Valuable memories are created and exchanged through this process which also helps developalifelongskill.”
Miami Art Week
Programming and Schedule MOCA will celebrate the exhi bitions with a Miami Art Week reception on Thursday, December 1st, 2022 to include a VIP reception (invitation only) from 6–8 p.m., and open to the public from 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. The museum will also hold an Artist and Curator-led Exhibition Tour on Saturday, December 3rd, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. The museum will also offer extended hours throughout the week. world domination and its rigid demand for compliance are pushing us towards a world in chains.
What too many fail to rec ognize, however, is that China and the American Deep State have joined forces. As I make clear in Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, this is fascism hiding behind a thin veneer of open government and populist elections.

As privacy expert Vincent Mosco concludes, “The benefit from smart cities clearly goes to the authorities who are able to use the promise of the modern, high-tech city to extend and deepen surveillance. It also goes to the big tech companies who profit first from building the smart city infrastructure and sec ondly by commodifying the entire smart city space. Digital currency. China has already adopted a governmentissueddigitalcurrency, whichnot only allows it to surveil and seize people’s financial transactions, but can also work in tandem with its social credit score system to punish individuals for moral

AI surveillance. In much the same way that Chinese products have infiltrated almost every mar ket worldwide and altered con sumer dynamics, China is now exporting its “authoritarian tech” to governments worldwide ostensibly in an effort to spread its brand of totalitarianism world wide. While countries with authoritarian regimes have been eager to adopt AI surveillance, liberal democracies are also “aggressively using AI tools to police borders, apprehend potential criminals, monitor citi zens for bad behavior and pull out suspected terrorists from crowds.”
Secret police. According to recent reports, China has planted morethan54secretpoliceforces in 25 cities around the world, including the United States, as part of their efforts to track and

Police brutality. Not much has changed about China’s brutal crackdown on protesters in the wake of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Chinese policing remains brutal, excessive and inflexible, now with the added power of the surveillance state behindit.
Intimidation tactics. China has mastered the art of intimidation tactics, threatening activists, their families and their livelihood should they fail to comply with thegovernment’sdictates.
Disappearance, brainwashing and torture. Those who fail to fall in line with China’s dictates are often made to disappear, arrested in the dead of night and imprisoned in Orwellian reeducationcamps.Chinahasbuilt more than 400 of these intern mentcampsinrecentyears.

For all intents and purposes, we have become the embodi ment of what Philip K. Dick feared when he wrote The Man in the High Castle, a vision of an alternate universe in which the Axis powers defeat the Allies in World War II and “fascism has not simply conquered America. It has insinuated itself, with dis turbing ease, into America’s DNA.”
Yet while Dick’s vision of a world in which totalitarianism has been normalized is chilling, our growing reality of a world in which the Deep State is not merely entrenched but has gone globalisdownrightterrifying.
Our national flag may not boast the red and white stripes with a swastika on a field of blue as depicted in The Man in the High Castle, but be warned: we arenolessoccupied.
