In the midst of a season filled with stunning performances and during a year in which the company topped the list of Carbonell award winners, Slow Burn Theatre Company announces its most exciting season to date, featuring five redhot hits that will delight and thrill South Florida audiences with stories of ambition, identity and resilience: “Catch Me If You Can;” “Disney’s Frozen;” “Beautiful, The Carole King Musical;” “Hairspray;” and “Alanis Morisette’s Jagged Little Pill.” The 2025/2026 Season is presented with support from American National Bank and Visit Lauderdale in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

“During our 2025-2026 Season, we are excited to present a thrilling mix of bold, talked about productions with powerful, socially relevant storylines,” said Slow Burn Theatre Artistic Director Patrick Fitzwater. “Each production is characterized by a strong narrative with dynamic characters, memorable music and widespread audience appeal. These productions will entertain, provoke discussion and create a sense of heartwarming nostalgia when it is most needed.”

Subscriptions to the five-show season go on sale Monday, February 24, with tickets to individual performances going on sale Saturday, June 7.

Based on the hit DreamWorks Motion Picture, “Catch Me If You Can” opens the season October 11 – 26 with the highflying musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught. Nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this delightfully entertaining show was created by a Tony Award-winning dream team, with a book by Terrence McNally, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager and globe-trotting con artist, Frank Abagnale, Jr., runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer, living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. When Frank’s lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Carl pursues Frank across the country to make him pay for his crimes.

“Disney’s Frozen” brings the winter chill to South Florida just in time for the holidays December 13 – 28. For the first time in forever, South Florida audiences will experience the musical phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated

feature film, “Disney’s Frozen” includes all the film’s beloved songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, along with new music written exclusively for the stage. “Frozen” is a powerful tale of sisterhood, acceptance and finding the real meaning of true love. Filled with spectacular special effects, a lush musical score, stunning sets and costumes and powerhouse performances, “Frozen” is everything you want in a musical. It’s moving. It’s spectacular. And above all, it’s pure joy. Music and lyrics are by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, with a book by Jennifer Lee. The musical is based on the Disney film written by Jennifer Lee and directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. The original Broadway production of “Frozen” was directed by Michael Grandage and produced by Disney Theatrical Productions.

Music lovers will have something to sing about this Valentine’s Day when “Beautiful, The Carole King Musical” brings its beloved, soulful and emotionally resonant story to audiences February 14March 1. The inspiring true story of Carole King’s journey from teenage songwriter to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical phenomenon filled with the songs people remember and a story they’ll never forget. From the chart-topping hits she wrote for the biggest acts in music to her own lifechanging, trailblazing success with “Tapestry,” “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” takes audiences on the ride of a lifetime, back to where it all began. With words and music by Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, a book by Douglas McGrath and music by arrangement with Sony Music Publishing, “Beautiful” features unforgettable classics including “You’ve Got a Friend,” “One Fine Day,” “So Far Away,” “Take Good Care of My Baby,” “Up on the Roof,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “Natural Woman.”

Big heart, big voices and big energy come wrapped in infectious music and dance when “Hairspray” hits the stage April 11 – 26. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this big and bold musical about one girl’s inspiring dream to dance is piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs. It’s 1962 in Baltimore and lovable, plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire: to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affection of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV

network, all without denting her ‘do! Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, “Hairspray” features a book by Thomas Meehan and Mark O’Donnell, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The 2025/2026 Season culminates with the emotionally raw and thoughtprovoking “Alanis Morisette’s Jagged Little Pill: The Musical” June 13 – 28. Winner of two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, eight Outer Critics Circle Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, “Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill: The Musical” is an exhilarating new musical inspired by the themes and raw emotions laid bare in Alanis Morissette’s seminal album of the same name. The Healys appear to be a picture-perfect suburban family, but looks can be deceiving. When cracks beneath the surface begin to show, they must choose between maintaining the status quo or facing harsh truths about themselves, their community and the world around them.

Major support of Slow Burn Theatre Company is provided by the Broward County Cultural Division, the Cultural Council and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The Community Foundation of Broward (CFB) and Business for the Arts Broward are proud to debut the third artwork of nine in its “Lead with Love” mural initiative, with a vibrant mural painted by renowned artist Cey Adams at the Dania Beach Marina. Located at 151 North Beach Road, Dania Beach, Florida 33004, painting on the mural began on February 27th, 2025.

The “Lead with Love” mural project is a transformative public art initiative in collaboration with Adams designed to spread a message of love and unity across Broward County. The project, running from fall 2024 to 2027, aims to create nine distinctive murals, each in a different city. Spearheaded by a partnership between the Community Foundation of Broward and Business for the Arts Broward, the project has a goal to enrich and unify the community and promote cultural engagement. Supporters will join Adams to paint the finishing touches on the nearly completed mural at Dania Beach Marina on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Community Foundation of Broward President and CEO Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D.; representatives from Business for the Arts Broward, City of Dania Beach officials and other sponsoring organizations will be in attendance. Media are invited to attend, engage and even pick up a paintbrush to help bring the mural to life.

The project seeks to foster a sense of unity and pride within each community by creating public art that reflects local identity and spirit. Each mural will serve as a cultural landmark, enhancing local character and providing a space for communal gathering and reflection. The murals are intended to be lasting symbols of love and cultural diversity, contributing to the artistic landscape of Broward County and fostering a deeper appreciation for art and community collaboration. Adams tapped into the Broward County arts community

and invited select artists to join him in the mural creation process.

The project’s first artwork, the “LOVE Las Olas” mural, is located on the western exterior wall of Hoffman’s Chocolates at 601 East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301 facing Tunnel Top Park. The second artwork, the “ONE LOVE PLANTATION” mural, is at Kingsley Park at 4680 Northwest 9th Court, Plantation, Florida 33317.

The “Lead with Love” mural project is supported by various sponsors including the Community Foundation of Broward, Business for the Arts Broward, Dara and Jarett Levan Fund for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Broward, Florida Power & Light, The City of Dania Beach, the BBX Capital Fund for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Broward and the Broward Cultural Division.

“The inspiration behind my LOVE murals is to encourage viewers to think and see beyond the surface. The goal of my art is to make a direct connection with the public,” said Adams. “Incorporating vibrant colors and positive messages, I hope to create better communication and understanding to bring people together. Thank you to the City of Dania Beach, the Community Foundation of Broward and my friends at Business for the Arts Broward for inviting me to create this mural.”

“Philanthropy means the love of humanity, and we felt this message was especially appropriate for our growing community,” said O’Flannery Anderson.

“This transformational project aims to inspire a movement in Broward to do what is right: to support others, to be kind, to share, to be patient, to demonstrate compassion, to listen, to learn, and to LOVE our community. These murals help Broward grow and develop into a place where we all feel a greater sense of pride and belonging.”

“We are happy to bring the third LOVE mural to Broward County at Dania Beach,

and once again merge business and art to uplift and strengthen our community,” said Jarett Levan, President and CEO of BBX Capital, CEO of IT’SUGAR and Business for the Arts of Broward Board Chair.

“The ‘Lead with Love’ mural at Dania Beach Marina beautifully reflects our ‘Sea it, Live it, Love it’ spirit, uniting our community through art,” said Dania Beach Mayor Joyce L. Davis.

At this locale, pizzas are paramount. The delectable Prosciutto Pizza topped with smoked prosciutto, mission figs, goat cheese arugula leaves—all garnished with a drizzle of honey—proffers the perfect

balance of sweet and savory flavors. The Margherita Pizza is a classic choice, of course, with house-made ricotta, mozzarella, grana padano, and fresh basil, delivering a clean and simple, yet delicious, flavor profile.

Of course, the homemade pasta here is a stellar standout. Two dishes exemplifying which include the Lumache alla Norcina includes fennel sausage, rapini, grana padano crema, herb breadcrumbs, and black truffle, creating a rich and indulgent dish. Their cocktail selection boasts an array of creative cocktail concoctions like the Just Peachy with white peach, raspberry, lemon and ginger beer; and the Limonata Rossa featuring black cherry, fresh lemon and soda, The restaurant’s curated wine list offers a blend of Italian, local and other options to perfectly accompany any dining experience.

Below, North Italia’s Chef Ryan Smith offers a few other tasty insights as to why this eatery has gained - and sustainedits popularity in SoFlo:

LLR: What makes the Fort Lauderdale location of North Italia unique compared to the other U.S. locations?

CRS: Fort Lauderdale is different from, let’s say, Miami where it’s all about the new restaurant openings that everyone wants to go to. Locals in Fort Lauderdale love going to their staple restaurants that have been around for 30 to 40-plus years … and it’s the generations of locals that keep them alive. Although North Italia is

new, I believe it will become the local Italian restaurant for generations to come. Our broad menu lends itself to our guests exploring numerous options. North Italia is not a “traditional” Italian restaurant, therefore we offer much more than just pizza and pastas. We also continually update our menus so new and returning guests alike can experience a variety of dishes including appetizers, salads, and entrees, in addition to our pastas and pizzas.

LLR: What sets North Italia Fort Lauderdale apart from other dining options in the area?

CRS: Our handmade pastas, beautiful patio, bar spaces and elevated hospitality set the restaurant apart from others. We pay attention to what our guests are seeking in a dining experience. For one, we change our menu twice a year to allow for the freshest ingredients with the most flavor. This also ensures we are staying current with different culinary and bar trends. Our open kitchens display our commitment to freshness where you can see our team hand rolling our doughs and stuffing our pastas for our guests. We also work personally with people planning special private events and can cater to whatever they are looking for when hosting a party.

LLR: For first-time visitors, what tips or advice would you offer a guest to ensure they have an unforgettable dining experience?

CRS: Come in to relax with friends or family, enjoy some wine, share some small plates or pizza … and don’t leave without trying a pasta! Amid our commitment to freshness, we produce our pizza dough and pastas in-house daily, paying close attention to technique. Each pasta—from our Tortellini Al Pomodoro to our Squid Ink Tonnarelli—is made with simple, fresh ingredients to create a flavorful dish.

LLR: Do share a bit more about how North Italia’s fresh-made pastas elevate the guest experience - also having become a signature of the brand at large.

CRS: The art of making pasta is more than just a recipe. It is a technique passed down from generation to generation. Each region has its own unique shape that is a celebration of Italian culture. We bring that

culture into every pasta we make. We want our pasta to reflect the regionality from which it comes. When creating new menu items or updating existing dishes, we intentionally pair the specific type of pasta to the accompanying components of the dish, including the sauce, cheeses, and garnish.

Another key element that elevates this guest experience is taking the time to train our staff to assist with wine pairings that best compliment each pasta—or any— dish, ensuring we are also taking the guest’s preferences into consideration.

LLR: Does the restaurant cater to diners with dietary preferences or restrictions, such as vegetarians or gluten-free guests?

CRS: Yes, we can accommodate all guests with any dietary restrictions by modifying any of our dishes, as necessary. In fact, we have many dishes that are inherently vegetarian on our menu. Some examples include the Zucca Chips, Cacio E Pepe Arancini, Burrata Di Stagione, our Seasonal Vegetable Salad, the Funghi Pizza, and our Tortelloni Al Pomodoro. We also offer gluten-free pasta and pizza crusts by request, with a handful of dishes that are naturally gluten-free.

LLR: What is the approach to the beverage offerings?

CRS: We try to stay current with trends in the industry. For example, we continually introduce new and unique Italian wines, enhance classic cocktails by adding Italian ingredients and we recently added a “mocktail” section on our menu as we are seeing them become more and more popular. We use Italian liquors to create our own twist on classic cocktails. Our Sicilian margarita topped with our house made sangria is a must try, along with our cold-served “Jump Start” double espresso martini shaken with chocolate and cream.

In all, North Italia Fort Lauderdale provides a dining experience that combines extraordinarily fresh and robust flavors with a refined yet unpretentious atmosphere - all underpinned by exemplary staff service. Be it a meal on-the-go, A foodieforward lunch or dinner experience, or a memorable celebration, this restaurant serves up an authentic slice of Italy in the vibrant heart of South Florida.

The Warren Wolf Quintet Is Weaving Wonders With The Vibraphone

The Warren Wolf Quintet takes the stage at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theater on March 12th, 2025, at 7:45 p.m. for a spellbinding evening of jazz, presented as part of the 2024-2025 Gold Coast Jazz Society (GCJS) Concert Series. Led by Vibraphone virtuoso Warren Wolf—whom “All About Jazz” calls a vibes wizard—this Quintet showcases the brilliance of one of today’s most accomplished vibraharpists.

Warren is an international touring musician and has performed throughout the United States of America, South America, Canada, Italy, Spain, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Scotland, London, Greece, Singapore, Thailand, Jakarta, Bangkok, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow and many other countries. He has made ten recordings, most notably for Mack Ave Records and is a member of the SFJAZZ Collective and Christian McBride and “Inside Straight.” He is also a faculty

member at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in San Francisco, California.

Wolf’s musical journey began at the age of three, when he started training on the vibraphone, marimba, drums, and piano under the guidance of his father, Warren Wolf, Sr. This early start fostered a deep love for music and an exceptional level of skill that would shape his illustrious career. Over the years, he has become a sought-after collaborator, currently serving as the drummer of choice for saxophonist Tia Fuller, a longtime member of Beyoncé’s touring band. Wolf is also a key member of the Donal Fox Group, performing alongside bassist John Lockwood and drummers Dafnis Prieto and Terri Lyne Carrington.

Described as a musician who has “maintained a beautiful melodicism in his playing that would seem obvious for his

instrument but surpasses such expectations again and again” (Nextbop Jazz), Wolf’s mastery of the vibraphone, or vibraharp, blends technical brilliance with deep emotional impact. Often referred to as the vibraharp, this unique instrument produces ethereal, bell-like tones that can shimmer or resonate with soulful depth. Wolf’s approach has redefined its role in modern jazz, combining rhythmic complexity with breathtaking artistry.

Joining Wolf is a lineup of masterful musicians: Tim Green on alto saxophone, whose sound blends hard bop, gospel, and modern jazz; the provocative young bassist and composer, Blake Meister; Alex Brown on piano/keyboard bringing vibrant innovation to every note; and Grammynominated McClenty Hunter on drums. Together, the Quintet creates a synergy that transforms Wolf’s compositions into thrilling, dynamic experiences.

The State Of Medicaid And Human Services

We All Can Agree That Efficiency and Transparency Are Excellent Goals, But Who and What Is Cut

Over the past months, the federal government has been evolving under new leadership. While our President has been pushing the boundaries there are still certain guardrails in place. Many laws that govern our democracy still require controlling votes of the Senate and Congress. We all can agree that efficiency and transparency are excellent goals but who and what is cut will have a direct effect on our delivery of services.

Checks and balances that seem to slow down the delivery of services are there to protect our tax dollars. We do not want them to be wasted or doled out by fraud. On the other hand, we as taxpayers should not be waiting months for services like Social Security, Medicare and Veterans benefits that we paid for and depend on.

I have had a direct experience sadly within the past year, trying to get benefits from the VA for our mother. Our Dad was in WWII. He served in the Navy on a hospital ship. She was due to a reimbursement for her out of pocket cost for nursing care. I had submitted an application over a year ago for her that was rejected for more information. It was resubmitted and the benefits were still not paid. I am sure I am not the only person that has come across this type of problem.

DOGE seems like a worthy attempt to clean up abuse and create efficiency. The issue is how they are going about it. Even with technology, you need human resources to work in departments. Disrupting the workflow with firing employees without technology improvement in place will only create more hardships for individuals dependent on these resources. As Congress works on a budget, we are already seeing across the board outcries from both Republican and

The U.S. Conference of Mayors held our recent leadership meeting. Our Executive Board and all committee chairs review the changes taking place.

Medicare was one of the topics that was discussed. As municipal leaders we do not directly manage Medicare, which is a national and state function. It does, however, directly impact all of our constituents. We passed a joint letter to Speaker Johnson, Majority Leader Thune, Minority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader Jeffries, urging them to strengthen Medicare and not cut this vital program.

The National State Legislators, The Council for State Governments, National Association of Counties, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, National League of Cities and The International City County Management Association, all signed on to protect Medicare.

Medicare does not simply provide health insurance to seventy-nine million Americans, it impacts all areas of healthcare, including hospitals.

Another issue that is now being implemented is the increase of tariffs on Mexico and Canada. I think all of us realize that Mexico has created issues with illegal immigration and illegal drugs. We all were caught off guard with the Canadian Tariff plan. Illegal drugs are being shipped to Canada and are finding their way to the United States.

Our partnership with Canada is the largest Bilateral trading relationship in the

world. $2.5 Billion dollars cross the border daily. Eight million jobs in the U.S. are tied to the Canadian trade industry. There are thirty-six states with Canada as their top exporters and Florida is one of them. Florida exports over $5.2 Billion to Canada including these top three agricultural, chemicals and equipment/ machinery. So, when tariffs go up, it will not just impact on the cost of what is imported but will affect what goods and services that are exported out of our state.

The other top concern of all Mayors was ICE. Florida was already at the forefront of this issue with our Governor trying to implement far-reaching laws that would impact our local Law Enforcement. It needs to be made noticeably clear that city Law Enforcement enforces all the laws. If they find a person is here illegally, they take them to the county. The county is tasked with jailing all criminals. They work directly with ICE by notifying their agents and undocumented immigrants that are in their custody.

The issue arises with our officers being taken off the road to enforce national immigration law. To date, we have not been approached by ICE to help them. If we are, it means less officers to protect our community, when it comes to Public Safety. Our officers are not directly trained to perform immigration enforcement. Taking officers off their regular duties for training also has an adverse effect on Public Safety.

The Acting Deputy Director of US ICE Kenneth Genalo, attended our meeting

and shared an update of their activity. We were all informed that they were and continue to target specific undocumented immigrants. Their main targets are known criminals that include murderers, violent offenders’, gangs and drug related crimes. They have no intention of targeting churches, schools, or hospitals. If they are aware of a criminal at any of these locations, they are required by law to work directly with local agencies, in ensuring innocent civilians are not placed in harm’s way. We are all now waiting to see what their next steps are.

The Police Athletic League of Hallandale Beach, announced the 2nd Annual One Hallandale Beach Family Fun Field Day. PAL Hallandale Beach is a national organization that police departments in different cities across the country implement to foster a greater connection between Law Enforcement, cities and communities through recreational sports. The event features a robust Resource Fair, entertainment, field games, prizes, food and much more on April 5th, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., in Hallandale Beach at O.B.
