The New Normal Office Culture

Sooner Is Not Better Than Later

The Pre-Pandemic Work Environment Will Be Different

In my line of work, I see very few accidental deaths. Each day we all make choices, and whether we like to admit it or not these choices have consequences.

For those returning to a physical office, the seating arrangements, meeting protocols, and other dynamics of the pre-pandemic work environment will be different. While there is no perfect plan, knowing the priorities and putting extra attention on detailed health measures are paramount for all employers, says Dr. Jonathan Spero (www.inhouse physicians.com), a physician and expert on pandemic preparedness and employee health. “As employers begin creating a COVID back-to-work program for their organizations, it is clear that there is no proven roadmap,” Dr. Spero says. “We are in uncharted territory. But it has to be all about health security. “People are concerned when they get up in the morning that they are going to be exposed to COVID-19. The only way to solve it is to take a lesson out of the global public health playbook and establish proven health security strategies. This involves three foundational elements: the prevention of illness, the detection, and the response once you get the data to identify who’s ill or who has been infected in the past. Some people will get infected in the workplace, so the key is taking all the measures Culture, Page 4A

who aren’t social distancing or wearing cloth face coverings increases your risk. Engaging with new people (e.g., those who don’t live with you) also raises your risk. Some people have the virus and don’t have any symptoms, and it is not yet known how often people without symptoms can transmit the virus to others. Can you keep 6 feet of space between you and others, will you be outdoors or indoors? The closer you are to other people who may be infected, the greater your risk of getting sick. Keeping distance from other people is especially important for people

I buried a young woman this morning. Her fiancé stood beside me. He was heartbroken. He could not understand why she had died so young. My name is Tracy Renee Lee. I am a Certified Grief Counselor (GC-C), Funeral Director (FDIC), published author, and syndicated columnist. I write books, weekly bereavement articles, and Grief BRIEFs related to understanding and coping with grief. It has long been my belief that we choose our manner of death. As I stood there beside him, I looked around the gathering of mourners. In some, I saw choices that invite disease. In others, I saw fascinations with dangerous activities. Some of the mourners displayed attitudes of slothfulness while others acted more aggressively. The point is that we all make decisions that lead us to a place where we face the death of our choosing. You may make the argument of accidents. In my line of work, I see very few accidental deaths. Even when one dies in an accident, he or she may have chosen to be where they were at that moment. Sometimes, however,

Deciding to Go Out? Here is What You Need to Know As communities and businesses are opening, you may be looking for ways to resume some daily activities as safely as possible. While there is no way to ensure zero risk of infection, it is important to understand potential risks and how to adopt different types of prevention measures to protect yourself and to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. As a reminder, if you have COVID-19, have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, or have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19, it is important to stay home and away from other people. When you can leave home and be around others depends on different factors for different situa-

tions. Follow CDC’s recommendations for your circumstances (www.cdc.gov). What you need to know In general, the more closely you interact with others and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread. If you decide to engage in public activities, continue to protect yourself by practicing everyday preventive actions. Keep these items on hand when venturing out: a cloth face covering, tissues, and a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, if possible. Think about how many people will you interact with, interacting with more people raises your risk. Being in a group with people
