Hallandale Beach Infrastructure And Paid Parental Leave

Over the past week many residents lost water due to yet another water main break. Our crews were out there right away fixing the main, but there was a day that many homes on Holiday Drive and the beach did not have water nor enough pressure on the beach to reach their condos. This water main runs across the Intracoastal Waterway and was installed over 50 years ago. Our City is very fortunate to have a great crew of employees within our Department Of Public Works.

I know that I have written about underground infrastructure for many years. Like many cities across the country, the state and the nation, our infrastructure has aged and many of our pipes have reached their useful life. For the past ten years, if not more, we have been improving and adding to our underground systems.

Currently we are retrofitting and replacing many of our sewer lift stations. These projects are in the Millions of Dollars.

The funding of projects is critical and as a City there was an increase in our water and sewer fees to create additional funding. With this increase, we were able to borrow through a revenue bond to address this critical infrastructure.

Currently we understand that the needs of the water, the sewer and the drainage projects are far greater than the amount borrowed.

Before the Pandemic, we as a Commission, had begun discussing a government obligation bond. Just like the parks, this bond would go to referendums and be placed on the tax rolls. This process is to evaluate projects that will be extensive and comprehensive with a focus on needs, not wants. At that time, the price tags were well over $150 Million Dollars. I encourage our residents to follow this process and I am concerned that we will cut projects in fear of the bond, not passing.

Please know that we want to make sure that all of our residents are informed when we have main breaks. In this case, we have many avenues, Robo Calls, Text Messages, E-mails and obviously, larger incidents are covered on Local TV Stations to cover the breaks. I also encourage all of our residents to please sign up On-line on our City’s Web-site, which is really easy by going to: www.cohb.org.

and bond with their children. In the event of illness, this time is often all used up and in general, this policy obviously helps the parents, but more importantly, it helps our future generations and allows parents to bond with them.

Many countries around the world provide Parental Leave, as are most companies, they realize that it also provides stability in the Workforce, by helping to retain Labor Forces and recruit new employees, as well.

Ed and Tom have recently returned from a trip to South Africa with some American collectors of Ardmore. They have lots of news to share from Fée Halsted, the founder of Ardmore and her talented team of artists.

They will also have amazing works of art from their new shipment for sale in the museum.

Louise Irvine has been privileged to go on safari several times and is a frequent visitor to the Ardmore studio. She is looking forward to showing guests around the magnificent Ardmore collection at WMODA and the new Safari Dance exhibit. As well as unique examples of ceramic art for sale, the WMODA shop also features the Ardmore Design collection of pillows, table linens and other home décor which make wonderful gifts for the Holidays.

The Wiener Museum introduces the work of British pottery pioneers, such as Josiah Wedgwood and Sir Henry Doulton, as well as European designers from the eras of Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

The glass galleries at the Wiener Museum showcase the art of French designer Renée Lalique and Venetian maestros from Murano, as well as local glass artists working in South Florida. The highlight of the Hot Glass Gallery is a spectacular collection by Chihuly. Contemporary Ceramic Art from the Ardmore Studio in South Africa, which is one of the favorite exhibits at the Wiener Museum, hosting a varied program of exhibitions and cultural events.

Arthur Wiener Arthur Wiener acquired his first piece of pottery in 1965 when he traveled to London, as a young college graduate, armed with Frommer’s Seminal Guidebook Europe for $5 a day. He blew his daily budget on a Royal Doulton character jug of Merlin the magician, which caught his eye in a china shop window because of the Star of David image on the handle. Merlin certainly cast a spell on Arthur as he went on to become an avid collector of Royal Doulton figures and character jugs. In the early years, Arthur scoured antique shows where he met specialist Royal Doulton dealers, including Ed Pascoe and Arron Rimpley, who have helped him build his collection. Arron has worked with Arthur for over 25 years and facilitated the museum opening at his Gallery of Amazing Things.

In addition to his vast collection of Royal Doulton figures and character jugs, Arthur became fascinated with the art pottery produced at Doulton’s Victorian Studios in Lambeth, London and Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, including impressive exhibition pieces for the World Fairs of the 19th and the 20th centuries. The largest piece in the collection is a colossal 6” tall Doulton Faience Vase, commissioned by the Gaekwar of Baroda. Arthur then began acquiring ceramic art from the British Arts & Crafts Movement and exploring European design from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Arthur’s collection comes right up to date with contemporary ceramic art from the Ardmore Studio in South Africa, he is very happy that his acquisitions have helped uplift this remote and rural community.

In recent years, Arthur has

become passionate about American Studio Glass, notably the work of Dale Chihuly and the Hot Glass Gallery at WMODA, which boasts a spectacular forest of Chihuly’s Macchia and Ikebana designs, alongside his Persian and Venetian forms.

In 2014, with his home and storerooms overflowing with his treasures, Arthur decided to open the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts to share his love of ceramics and glass with a wide audience. His remarkable legacy has created a unique educational and cultural resource in South Florida, an important new study center for British and European ceramics and American studio glass. “I want to share my love for the fired arts and leave a legacy to educate and inspire future generations about the importance of art in our lives and culture,” said Arthur Wiener.

Consumer Alert: Attorney General Moody Warns of Payment App Hack Attacks Attorney General Ashley Moody is warning consumers about hackers taking advantage of the increase in mobile payment app usage. The COVID-19 pandemic may have prompted more people to use mobile payments rather than transfer cash, or even credit cards, between individuals to prevent the spread of germs. In 2019, 64 million individuals in the United States used peer-to-peer mobile payments. There are now more than 92 million individuals using peer-to-peer mobile payments and that number is expected to surpass 100 million by the end of 2021.

More than 25% of all point-of-sale transactions in 2020 were made using a mobile wallet. This increase of mobile payments could continue with the holidays approa-

ching. Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “Mobile payment app usage is on the rise and with the rapid increase in the popularity of these apps, comes the potential for hackers and scammers to attempt to interrupt transactions. Please be careful when using these apps and take steps to ensure the money you are sending goes to the intended recipient and not to a scammer.”

According to reports, a retired couple, Sturm and his wife Aviva from Boynton Beach were victims of a mobile payment app hack. A hacker registered the couple for a Venmo account without the couple’s knowledge and siphoned off $1,500 a

week until the bank account was completely drained.Sturm and his wife Aviva said they had no idea hackers had been stealing from their bank account from March until June of this year.

“We found out when we paid the rent and it bounced,” Alan said. How had the hacker done it? The Sturms said their bank account information apparently was used set up a Venmo account. Venmo is a virtual wallet you use to pay peopleusually friends and family members for relatively small things like dinner or a tip.

And then they said money from their account was transferred by Venmo to someone else. But the Sturms said

they’ve never used Venmo at all.

To prevent mobile payment app hacks, Attorney General Moody is providing the following tips to help Floridians use mobile payment apps safely and securely: • Create a second bank account with limited funds to connect to mobile payment applications; • Register a credit card rather than a bank account or a debit card as credit cards provide extra user protections; • Regularly review financial statements to check for signs of fraudulent transactions; and • Verify that money being sent is going to the correct recipient.

FDOT Construction Open House: Washington Street & NW/SW 72nd Ave. Mobility Project The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District Four will host a Virtual Public Meeting and In-person Construction Open House regarding the mobility improvements along Washington Street and NW/SW 72nd Avenue in the Cities of Hollywood and Pembroke Pines. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 23rd from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., both virtually at this link and in-person at Pembroke Pines City Hall Room, A101 at 601 City Center Way. The Broward MPO is investing over $300 million to create safer, healthier communities in Broward County and this project is one of many within a larger plan to create enhanced bicycle, pedestrian, and public transportation access. (NMEFI). Mayor Bien-Aime will host a private reception to honor the award recipients and their families on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the North Miami City Hall located at 776 Northeast 125th Street, 2nd Floor Lobby, North Miami, Florida 33161.

“I’m really proud of the 20 North Miami students who received $5,000 scholarships from the North Miami Educational Foundation. Congratulations and best of luck to all of the students as they pursue their dreams and continue to advance their education” said Mayor Philippe BienAime.

As part of its mission, NMEFI aims to make higher education and learning a reality for North Miami students in need of an opportunity to attend college. Earlier this year, the foundation awarded twenty students with $5,000 scholarships to provide financial assistance during their Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 Semesters. The scholarships will be split in half and awarded during each Semester ($2,500 Per Semester). The students may continue to receive the scholarships entirely through college as long as they maintain high academic performances and continue to meet required criteria to receive the awards.
