Loving life with new vision after 74 years At the age of 86, when many are winding down and relaxing, Harold Smith is loving life and seeing everything that he has been missing for years. The Hollywood resident, who had been wearing glasses since the age of 12, and suffering with High Astigmatism, using his eyes to read over thousands of real estate contracts, started to experience vision problems a little over a year ago. Having visited Dr. Stanley Braverman since moving to the area from Illinois, he called to make an appointment. That visit really changed the way he approaches each and every day. ––––––––––––––––––––– BRAVERMAN, 11A

Castellano Seeks Unprecedented Fourth Consecutive Riding Title • Eclipse Award-winning jockey Returns for Championship Meet For the past three winters, Javier Castellano has dominated Gulfstream Park’s star-studded riding colony like no jockey before him. He set the bar even higher in 2013-14, crushing his own single-meet victory total and capturing both his first Florida Derby and the Eclipse Award as champion rider. The 37-year-old Venezuelan looks to build on his success when he returns for Gulfstream’s 2014-15 Championship meet. “I’m looking forward to the meet,” Castellano said. “I think it’s going to be a great meet. We’re excited to be here.” Through December 4, Castellano led all North American jockeys with more than $24.4 million in purse earnings and was second with 300 victories, including 28 graded stakes, nine of them in Grade 1 races, most recently taking the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf with Dayatthespa. He topped both categories in 2013, finishing with 362 wins and $26,218––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– GULFSTREAM, Page 8A

HALLANDALE BEACH Children lined up for hours to meet with Santa Claus at the annual City of Hallandale Beach Holiday Celebration. Santa handed out gifts to each child and listened to every request. Some children were a bit afraid of the jolly man in the red suit, but a great time was had by all. Page 1B.
