Florida Is Putting Seniors First Efforts Are Made To Provide COVID-19 Vaccine To Residents

More South Florida residents are starting to get COVID-19 vaccines. The goal is to vaccinate people age 65 and over and eventually frontline health professionals. Now people must make an appointment to get a vaccination. The website where people go to sign up for the vaccine has crashed and many people have struggled to get an appointment and faced very long lines. The State of Florida has been unable to distribute all of its vaccines. But improvements are

being made and more people are getting the vaccinations.

Broward Commissioner Dale Holness said, “Vaccines depend on the Department of Health.

They are wrapping up to provide locations. They are providing vaccines at churches at Mount Herman and Mount Olive Baptist Church.

From what I am seeing, the hospitals are offering new vaccines. We see a tremendous amount of vaccines being brought into Broward and we are seeing more distribution sites.

At vaccination sites across the state, seniors formed long lines - some camping out overnight with lawn chairs and blankets - hoping to gain immunity to fight the virus.

We are seeing vaccines being distributed at parks, community centers and churches,” said Holness.

Even though, the end of the

pandemic is starting to come into view, Holness wants everyone to remain cautious about COVID-19. “We still have to safeguard and wear masks and

What to Expect in 2021: Madness, Mayhem, Manipulation and More Tyranny

What should we expect in 2021?

So far, it looks like this year is going to be plagued by more of the same brand of madness, mayhem, manipulation and tyranny that dominated 2020.

Frankly, I’m sick of it: the hypocrisy, the double standards, the delusional belief by Americans at every point along the political spectrum that politics and politicians are the answer to what ails the country, when for most of our nation’s history, politics and politicians have been the cause of our woes.

Consider: for years now, Americans, with sheeplike placidity, have tolerated all manner of injustices and abuses meted out upon them by the government (police shootings of unarmed individuals, brutality, corruption, graft, outright theft, occupations and invasions of their homes by militarized police, roadside strip searches, profitdriven incarcerations, profitdriven wars, egregious surveillance, taxation without any real representation, a nanny state that dictates every aspect of their lives, lockdowns, overcriminalization, etc.) without ever saying “enough is enough.”

Only now do Americans seem righteously indignant enough to mobilize and get active, and for what purpose? Politics. They’re ready to go to the mat over which corporate puppet will get the honor to serve as the smiling face on the pig for the next four years.

Talk about delusion. It’s so ludicrous as to be Kafkaesque.

A perfect example of how farcical, topsy-turvy, and downright perverse life has become in America: while President Trump doles out medals of commendation and presidential pardons to political cronies who have done little to nothing to advance the cause of freedom, Julian Assange rots in prison for daring to blow the whistle on the U.S. government’s war crimes.

You’d think that Americans

Pro-Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol following a rally with President Donald Trump on January 6, in Washington, DC. would be outraged over such abject pandering to the very swamp that Trump pledged to drain, but that’s not what has the Right and the Left so worked up.

No, they’re still arguing over whether dead men voted in the last presidential election.

Either way, no matter which candidate lost to the other, it was always going to be the Deep State that won.

And so you have it: reduced to technicalities, distracted by magician’s con games, and caught up in the manufactured, highly scripted contest over which beauty contestant wears the crown, we have failed to do anything about the world falling apart around us. Literally.

Our economy - at least as it impacts the vast majority of Americans as opposed to the economic elite - is in a shambles.

Our infrastructure is falling apart.

Our government has been overtaken by power-hungry predators and parasites. And our ability and fundamental right - to govern our own lives is being usurped by greedy government operatives who care nothing for our lives or our freedoms.

Our ship of state is being transformed into a ship of fools.

We stand utterly defenseless in the face of a technological revolution brought about by artificial intelligence and wall-to-wall surveillance that is re-orienting the world as we know it. Despite the mounting high-tech encroachments on our rights, we have been afforded a paltry amount of legislative and judicial protections. Indeed, Corporate America has more rights than we do. We stand utterly powerless in the face of government bureaucrats and elected officials who dance to the tune of corporate overlords and do what they want, when they want, with whomever they want at the taxpayer’s expense, with no thought or concern for the plight of those they are supposed to represent. To this power elite, “we the people” are good for only two things: our tax dollars and our votes. In other words, they just want our money. We stand utterly helpless in the face of government violence that is meted out, both at home and abroad. Indeed, the systemic violence being perpetrated by agents of the government—inflicted on unarmed individuals by battlefield-trained SWAT teams, militarized police, and bureaucratic government

agents trained to shoot first and ask questions later—has done more collective harm to the American people and their liberties than any single act of terror or mass shooting.

We stand utterly silenced in the face of government and corporate censors and a cancel culture that, in their quest to not offend certain viewpoints, are all too willing to eradicate views that do not conform. In this way, political correctness has given way to a more insidious form of group think and mob rule.

We stand utterly locked down in the face of COVID-19 mandates, restrictions, travel bans and penalties that are acclimating the populace to unquestioningly accede to the government’s dictates, whatever they might be (as long as they are issued in the name of national security), no matter how extreme or unreasonable.

We stand utterly intimidated in the face of red flag laws, terrorism watch lists, contact tracing programs, zero tolerance policies, and all other manner of police state tactics that aim to keep us fearful and compliant.

We stand utterly indoctrinated in the collective belief that the

government - despite its longstanding pattern and practice of corruption, collusion, dysfunction, immorality and incompetence - somehow represents “we the people.”

Despite all of this, despite how evident it is that we are mere tools to be used and abused and manipulated for the power elite’s own diabolical purposes, we somehow fail to see their machinations for what they truly are: thinly veiled attempts to overthrow our republic and enslave the citizenry in order to expand their power and wealth.

It is a grim outlook for a new year, but it is not completely hopeless.

If hope is to be found, it will be found with those of us who do not rely on politicians that promise to fix what is wrong but instead do their part, at their local levels, to right the wrongs and fix what is broken. I am referring to the builders, the thinkers, the helpers, the healers, the educators, the creators, the artists, the activists, the technicians, the food gatherers and distributors, and every other person who does their part to build up rather than destroy.

As I make clear in my book, Battlefield America: The War on the American People, “we the people” are the hope for a better year. Not Trump. Not Biden. And not the architects and enablers of the American Police State.

Until we can own that truth, until we can forge our own path back to a world in which freedom means something again, we’re going to be stuck in this wormhole of populist anger, petty politics and destruction that is pitting us one against the other.

In that scenario, no one wins.

Yes, it’s January, not June, and you may feel like you’re finally settling into a routine during a challenging school year.

But as the saying goes, “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” Despite the disruptions of COVID-19, January is the ideal time to check in with your child about your school choice and start planning for the next school year.

That’s why National School Choice Week takes place the last week of January, January 24 - January 30th 2021. Each year, the public awareness effort features thousands of independently-planned community activities that help parents in Hallandale Beach and across the nation learn more about school choices and prep for the next school year.

As families and teachers in Florida celebrate the Week with 3,467 virtual events and activities, don’t miss doing these three things to start planning now for an extraordinary school year: First, talk to your child.

You see your child every day and know what makes them happy, nervous, or inspired. But make time during School Choice Week to speak with your child about their current school experience.

What are they learning? What would they change? What are they doing when they feel happiest?

If you talk to other parents about their school choice, remember: What’s important to you and your child in a school may be different than what’s important to your neighbor—and that’s okay. One family may prioritize a school’s location; another may consider a school’s language offerings or extracurriculars more important.

Be confident in what matters most to you and your child in a school.

Second, know your options.

You might know your child better than anyone else, but you may not know all the school options in your area. Here in Florida, there are a variety of educational options available to attend including: traditional public schools with flexible open enrollment, charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online schools, and homeschooling. Florida’s state-run scholarship programs extend to students in families with modest incomes, with an Individualized Education Plan, or victims

of violence in public schools, in addition to a few other student groups.

If reading this helped you learn something new about education options in your

area, share that knowledge. A simple conversation with a neighbor about school options could transform their child’s life.

Third, find and celebrate your community.

Starting in January gives you plenty of time to consider new schools. Even if you’re not sure a school is for you, learning more via a call or visit may surprise you. Look for what seems to motivate the students and teachers. Is it an environment you could see your child thriving in?

Or, maybe you already love your current school and plan to stay. If so, use this time and your child’s feedback to make a simple plan to truly invest in your school choice. Maybe you’ll volunteer at the school once a month. Maybe you’ll supplement classroom learning with monthly museum trips, or use Khan Academy one evening a week to help your child’s fill in their weak spots in math.

At the end of the day, navigating the K12 education process is an adventure— celebrate it! Use School Choice Week (January 24 - January 30th 2021) to spread positivity about your school on social media or send a thank you note to a teacher. Spreading positivity can start a domino effect, reminding teachers of their love for education and inspiring other parents to be more engaged.

A child’s learning environment is one of the single-biggest influencers of their life, and it’s worth putting in the time to find a great school fit. Whether it’s finding a new school or showering your current school with love, now is the time to start deciding what school choices to make next.

“Myself, and the rest of the dining team, don’t want our menu options to be repetitive, so we are creative and love to try out new dishes.”

Some of those new dishes — like matzo ball soup, brisket with noodle kugel and carrot tzimmes — come about because of Galina’s frequent conversations with residents that inspire her to transform their comments and suggestions into reality. “We get amazing feedback. A lot of times, something new becomes a menu favorite that is requested by residents on a regular basis. I love it when that happens!”

Cuisine meant to be savored.

Another member of The Sterling culinary team who loves exceeding resident expectations is Sous Chef Dwayne White, who has been cooking at the community for 15 years. “It’s a pleasure to create amazing dishes and then serve them to the residents,” he said. “We think outside the box and make sure the variety and taste of the food is superb. Food is important, so we cater to lots of special requests to make sure everybody is happy.” Dwayne, who primarily cooks up breakfast and lunch entrées, added that special requests are always given top priority. “Many of our residents have specific dietary restrictions for health or personal reasons, and that affects what they can eat. That’s why I always take the time to talk to residents about what they need, to make sure they eat well and really enjoy what they eat.”

Making sure residents are served restaurant-style entrées they can’t wait to eat is also a top priority for Lorraine Byfield, another Sous Chef at The Sterling. “It’s a pleasure to be given the freedom to make dishes from scratch,” Lorraine said “I’ve been here for 17 years and it’s still such a joy to work with people I’ve known for years and spend time with residents who truly are like family. When they come and thank me for serving such great food,” she said, “it gives me so much satisfaction. I also love being able to take suggestions from the residents and create dishes that are unique and special to them. I think it’s one of the things that really makes The Sterling unique.”

Vaccine Distribution Update

Over the past days, I have received numerous calls from seniors trying to get the Covid Vaccine. During the Pandemic the County, Broward Mayors and health officials all worked together to make sure we collectively had all the pertinent and timely information to keep our residents safe. During the vaccine phase, the only information we have is what has been told to us from the Governor, health Department and hospitals.

Three months ago, we continued to ask what the plan is.

Broward Health Department told us that a panel established by the Governor was creating the plan. We were not told the Who? What? Where or When? When pressed, we were told that when the first SARs vaccine came out, they won recognition for the great job they did. Sadly, the Governor and his panel have fallen woefully short. Once again, they did not stick to the CDC guidelines and now, we have little information and a patch work of different ways to receive the

vaccines.

There were three phases recommended. I need to stress that these were recommendations and the CDC gave flexibility to agencies since one size does not fit all. Obviously the first Phase, “1A” was for healthcare workers and nursing homes. That, the state did right but also opened the vaccine to all persons over the age of 65.

The next phase “1B” was changed by our Governor rather than people over 75, frontline essential workers such as fire fighters, police officers, corrections officers, food and agricultural workers, United States Postal Service workers, manufacturing workers, grocery store workers, public transit workers, and those who work in the educational sector, which include teachers, support staff, and daycare workers. This is where the plan started to fail for our community. It was open to everyone over 65.

In my opinion, due to our large population, our system has failed the very seniors it was to

help. Due to our population, it should have been open only to those over 75 for the first and second rounds. Now seniors are stuck at home struggling to find a vaccine. Some do not have access to the web programs and are stuck on the phone simply trying to talk to a person.

Phase “1C” is for ages 16—64 years with underlying medical conditions which increase the risk of serious, life-threatening complications from COVID-19.

Then other essential workers, such as people who work in transportation and logistics, food service, housing construction and finance, information technology, communications, energy, law, media, public safety, and public health.

I, along with the Mayors have urged our Governor to allow the Broward Health Department to work directly with our County officials to adapt a plan that is more suited to our area. While the whole distribution process is in its infancy, I encourage our seniors not to give up. Our social workers at our Hepburn Center

have been tasked with helping those that are having difficulty with the system. You can call 954-457-1460 for assistance.

I know some people are scared about getting the vaccine.

There was a recent news report about a doctor taking it and dying. The reality in these cases was he chose to get it even though he was immunocompromised. If you have these types of underlying issues, you should check with your doctor. I was fortunate to get my 91 mother and her one caregiver who was over 65 the vaccine and both were fine.

All vaccines require two doses. When you go to get the vaccine, they ask you to fill out a consent form. You must have ID. Take your insurance card with you. Currently, the vaccine is free but if you have insurance, take your cards with you. It is really simple. They will give you a card from the CDC to bring back to get the second shot. You will go back to that same location to receive the second dose.

Gloria Kuhlman received a first vaccine at Markham Park. “I did not have to wait long to get my vaccine. I came in received the vaccine and was given a date for the second vaccine,” she said.

The Koinonia Worship Center and Village in Pembroke Park provided the vaccine to about 500 seniors on Sunday.

It was one of a group of churches that participated in a pilot partnership program between the Florida Department of Health and religious organizations. Florida Division of Emergency Management personnel participated and helped set up the event. It was run with the support of Florida Senator Shevrin Jones’ office.

Janice Minnis, the administrative assistant to the senior pastor at Koinonia said the vaccine distribution went very well.

The church worked with the state to make event a, reality. “We had ten tables set up and people age 65 and older had to get through a process to receive the vaccination. We consider the event a success,” she said.

The Miami Hard Rock site has begun administering the vaccine. The site will continue to provide COVID-19 testing while offering vaccinations. The site will offer the vaccine to all individuals age 65 and older and frontline health care workers. The goal is to offer 1,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine per day free of charge, according to the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis.

Upon arriving, individuals will be directed to a separate lane to receive the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

People will be able to provide contact information, so the state can work with them on arranging a time to receive their second dose. All individuals will be asked to make an appointment and are encouraged to bring a government-issued form of identification and health information to the site. It does not have to be a Florida Driver’s License. More sites will be announced as the state receives more doses of the vaccine. This state supported site is operated by the Florida Division of Emergency Management and will increase public access to the COVID19 vaccine under Florida’s “Seniors First” proactive vaccination plan that prioritizes getting the vaccine to people 65 and

older.

During a conference, DeSantis said, “and I’m pleased to announce four new actions that will continue our proactive approach to offering the vaccine to Floridian’s 65 and older, as well as our continued efforts to vaccinate frontline health care workers and long-term care facility residents. Partnerships with hospitals remain critical to our efforts, but this alone is not enough to reach our vaccination goals.”

DeSantis continued, “To that end, I’m directing the Florida Division of Emergency Management to partner with the Florida Department of Health to identify additional sites to administer the vaccine and be open seven days per week, including the conversion of state supported testing sites and partnerships with places of worship in underserved communities. I am also directing the Division to hire additional nurses to support these sites and accelerate vaccinations in Florida’s over 3,000 assisted living facilities. We will continue to build on these efforts in the coming weeks.”

Although more people are getting the vaccine. DeSantis has been criticized for the slow rollout of the vaccine. U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz visited the Koinonia location and said DeSantis has not handled the pandemic well. She and other leaders have said that the website where seniors are to sign up for the vaccine has not worked well. Schultz believes the virus remains a serious threat.

Some of the major goals described by DeSantis include expanding access to vaccine with additional state supported sites. He has directed the FDEM to work with the Florida Department of Health to identify state-run COVID-19 testing sites that can convert into vaccine sites.

Another goal is to deploy the vaccine into underserved communities. DeSantis has directed FDEM to identify places of worship and other locations in underserved communities where the vaccine may be administered. Also, DeSantis has directed the FDEM to hire 1,000 contract nurses to support vaccination efforts. These nurses will be deployed throughout Florida including public sites run by the state or counties and private sites. The nurses will supplement the many people already in the field including members of the Florida National Guard.

There will be an effort to prioritize longterm care facility residents.
