President Carlee Drummer, pictured center here with SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson and former Chairman of the SUNY Board of Trustees, H. Carl McCall, assumed her post at C-GCC this July.

C-GCC Welcomes President Carlee Drummer, Ph.D. While the summer months are often some of the quietest on a college campus, July 2019 brought with it one of C-GCC’s biggest changes to date: the appointment of Carlee Drummer, Ph.D., as the college’s sixth president. Most recently, Drummer served as President of Quinebaug Valley Community College (QVCC) in Danielson, Conn., and succeeds C-GCC President Emeritus James R. Campion, who retired this year after 19 years in the position. Drummer earned both her doctorate and masters of arts in English from SUNY’s Stony Brook University, received her bachelor of arts, magna cum laude, from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and has attended the Seminar for New Presidents at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Upon her appointment, SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson noted that Drummer’s background is a varied one that has cultivated a number of skills across many disciplines.

“From spearheading a solar panel partnership between GE and Quinebaug Valley Community College to serving as an executive director of college advancement to holding multiple faculty appointments, Dr. Drummer’s leadership experience is impressive and diverse,” said Johnson. “We are pleased to welcome Dr. Drummer back to the SUNY family.”

• COGREENE CALENDAR Fall 2019 • The College will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2 • Credit and non-credit classes begin on Sept. 3 • There are no classes during the Thanksgiving holiday recess Wednesday, Nov. 27 – Friday, Nov. 29

Studio Painting-Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor

This class is for both the beginner and intermediate painter and centers on individual instruction. Both will use the under painting and color glaze methods (grisaille), learn tonal values through the completion of monochromatic painting with color “glazing” and keeping the problems of form and values separate from the application of the color. A finished painting, suitable for framing, is the goal of this class. A supply list is available from ralahme@gmail.com. Students should be ready to start painting at the first class.

Rover Come Back! Getting Your Dog to Come When Called

Does your dog ignore you when you call him/her? Or worse, run in the opposite direction? Would you like your dog to instead run toward you with delight and enthusiasm? Let’s work on that! We will start from the ground up building a solid foundation to get your dog running toward you instead of away. This class is taught using science-based, force and intimidation free methods and techniques. There is a limit of four dogs and handlers to ensure that everyone receives enough individual instruction. The last class may involve outdoor practice dependent on progress and weather permitting. All dogs need proof of DHL and Parvo-virus inoculations. Please have the same person attend and work with the dog for each class in order to facilitate maximum learning and accomplishment for both the pet parent and the dog. The first class is

John Gallo Memorial Scholarship Benefits C-GCC Construction Technology Students A cadre of family and friends of the late John Gallo, Sr. of Hudson, N.Y., has created the John Gallo Memorial Scholarship to benefit students enrolled in the new Construction Technology – Preservation Certificate program at Columbia-Greene Community College. A long-time resident of Hudson, graduate of Hudson High School and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Gallo spent more than 30 years as an ironworker before retiring to Florida. He passed away in May 2016, and soon after The John Gallo Memorial Golf Tournament held in Rotonda, Fla., was founded in his honor with the assistance of the Sons & Daughters of Italy #659 in Hudson. Monies were raised at the tournament earlier this year to fund

the scholarship, which will also accept contributions on an on-going basis. C-GCC’s new Construction Technology program has been formally approved by the New York State Education Department as a hands-on series of courses designed to help students jump-start their carpentry careers. The program will be housed in a brand-new technology building on the C-GCC campus, where students will train to construct and renovate residential buildings using current and emerging building practices. No prior carpentry or construction experience is required to apply to this program, which can be completed in one year. Pictured above are friends and family of the late John Gallo, Sr., including

organizers of the John Gallo Memorial Golf Tournament, in front of the building that will house C-GCC’s new Construction Technology program: Golf tournament organizers Francis Abitabile, Anthony Gallo, and John Gallo, Jr.; Joan Koweek, executive director of the Columbia-Greene Community Foundation; Janet Gallo; friend and co-tournament organizer Peter Mullins; Elissa Gallo, and Guy Apicella, representing Sons & Daughters of Italy #659, Hudson. Anyone wishing to contribute to this scholarship may do so by contacting the Columbia-Greene Community Foundation, 4400 Route 23, Hudson, N.Y., 12534; (518) 828-4181, ext. 3727.

C-GCC’s Automotive Technology Program Has a Model Year

Assistant Professor Marc Gilbert shakes hands with Timothy Hempel ’19 following their Spark Plug Challenge Face-off at the New York International Auto Show.

Last semester, recent C-GCC graduate Timothy Hempel of Tivoli, N.Y., took on one of his professors at the 2019 New York International Auto Show in the Spark Plug Challenge. Marc Gilbert, Assistant Professor of Automotive Technology at C-GCC, completed the task in one minute, 23 seconds – but Hempel ultimately triumphed at one minute, 22 seconds. It was a contest Gilbert says he was happy to lose, and also one of many victories C-GCC’s Automotive Technology program has celebrated in the last year. Things first revved up for the program during the Fall 2018 semester with the arrival of Subaru University, a Subaru Technician certification option for enrolled automotive technology degree students that, upon completion, qualifies them for employment at any Subaru dealership in the country. But momentum didn’t slow, and C-GCC Automotive Technology finished strong; deemed one of the best Automotive Schools in the Northeast by Trade School Future. The honor is based on criteria including graduation rates, tuition fees, student debt, and salaries offered to candidates after graduation. Taught by Master Technicians certified by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), C-GCC’s Automotive Technology program offers several options for study in addition to the Subaru University program, including: For more information about the many Automotive Technology options available to C-GCC students, visit SUNYcgcc.edu or call (518) 828-4181, ext. 3241.

CoGreene Credit Spotlight: C-GCC’s annual National Field Study – an immersive trip to Washington, D.C., offered to selected Criminal Justice students – coincided this year with National Police Week. Ten students, many of whom graduated from the program in May, participated this year and explored professional opportunities at locales such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and many more.

If any non-credit course or class is cancelled due to inclement weather or emergency closings, or a satellite location is closed classes will automatically be extended an additional week.

New York State Immunization Requirements: New York State Public Health Law 2165 requires all post-secondary students who were born on or after January 1, 1957 and who are enrolled for six or more credits to document immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella before registering for classes.
