• A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DRUMMER Greetings! As the summer days begin to wane — and the COVID-19 pandemic continues to ravage the United States — our lives proceed in a state of ambiguity. In the middle of March, few expected the crisis would persist well into the summer, let alone into the fall. Yet, one thing remains certain: learning never pauses, and taking a class or two provides the ideal antidote for other aspects of our lives that, for now, are “on hold.” C-GCC continues its proud legacy of providing top-notch instruction for all ages, whether online, remote, or face-to-face. A recent SUNY survey reveals 89 percent of CoGreene students affected by the sudden pivot to the virtual classroom in March were “satisfied or very satisfied” with their experience, compared to an average 76 percent satisfaction rate reported by students at the other SUNY community colleges. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 }

ON THE COVER:

The C-GCC community is eager to do their part to prevent COVID-19, which means wearing masks and practicing six-feet of social distancing. Let’s Go, #CoGreene!

C-GCC will offer a mix of online, remote, and on-campus courses this fall, for both credit and non-credit courses.

CoGreene Forward: C-GCC Releases Campus Reopening Plan C-GCC has released its campus reopening plan, CoGreene Forward, outlining protocols for the Fall 2020 semester including social-distancing requirements, disinfecting procedures, and classroom sizes. The Fall semester, slated to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8, will include online, remote, and face-to-face instruction – the latter, according to President Carlee Drummer, Ph.D., will be limited to “kinetic” classes requiring hands-on instruction such as nursing clinicals; art studios; and selected science, automotive technology, and construction technology labs. C-GCC conducted all courses online beginning in March, and concurrently the Pandemic Preparedness, CoGreene Forward Academics, and CoGreene Forward Operations task forces have been engaged in meaningful discussions for an on-campus operations plan that would ensure, to the greatest extent possible, the health and safety of students, employees, and the greater communities served by the College. To that end, classrooms have been reconfigured in a “honeycomb” style to yield the greatest number of seats while still maintaining six-foot socialdistancing protocols, and class start- and end-times will be staggered to reduce foot-traffic in the hallways, among other measures.

Until further notice, in-person events and meetings will not occur at the College, and only essential C-GCC employees will work on campus, doing so on rotating schedules. Workspaces have been reconfigured, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when social distancing cannot be maintained, including in corridors. C-GCC is also adhering to the hygiene, cleaning, and disinfecting requirements advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Columbia and Greene County Departments of Health, and the screening process set forth by the Reopening New York Higher Education Guidelines released by New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Office. NOTE: This Plan is subject to change to reflect new information, guidance, and/or direction from SUNY and the Governor’s Office.

Studio Painting-Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor

This class is for both the beginner and intermediate painter and centers on individual instruction. In addition to offering students a still-life from which to paint, students are encouraged to bring to class multiple photographs from which they will create a unique painting. Combine landscape photos with structures, wildlife, people, vehicles, or whatever, and meld great photos of pets and or people into a group portrait. Only one’s imagination will limit what one can create. Students using oil paint or watercolors will study traditional methods – acrylic painters will learn how these “classic” art techniques apply to this relatively new medium. Those working in oil or acrylic will use the under painting and color glaze methods (grisaille). They will learn tonal values through the completion of monochromatic painting with color “glazing” – keeping the problems of form and values separate from the application of the color. A finished painting, suitable for framing, is the goal of this class. Material list available from ralahm@gmail.com. Students should be ready to start painting at the first class.

C-GCC’s Virtual Sandy Speenburgh Bike-a-thon Raises Funds for CMH Nurses

C-GCC raised funds for CMH nurses this year during its first-ever virtual bike-a-thon. From left to right are Mary Graham, R.N., CMH Ambulatory Department; Mary Ellen Plass, CMH chief nursing officer and vice president of Patient and Clinical Services; Robbin Wase, administrative assistant for the C-GCC Division of Nursing and coordinator of the bike-a-thon; and Joan Koweek, executive director of the C-GCC Foundation.

C-GCC’s Division of Nursing has hosted the Sandy Speenburgh Bike-athon — named for an honored, retired nursing faculty member — for six years. In 2020, the event took on a new look, being held virtually, and a new charge: raising funds for the nurses of Columbia Memorial Health. It proved to be no less successful in its revised format. Robbin Wase, administrative assistant for the Division of Nursing and coordinator of the bike-a-thon, explained that the event typically occurs in the spring on the C-GCC campus, and raises funds for the Sandy Speenburgh Scholarship. This year, cyclists were instead asked to ride a distance of their choice in their own neighborhoods any time from April 25 to May 9, and share a photo, video, or post about the ride on social media using the hashtag #Speenburgh2020. Riders then mailed their entry fees and additional donations to the C-GCC Foundation. “This year, we rode in honor of all nurses — especially those working at

“This year, we rode in honor of all nurses – especially those working at CMH, with which the C-GCC nursing division works very closely.” CMH, with which the C-GCC Nursing Division works very closely,” said Wase, noting that the bike-a-thon ultimately raised $890, to which the C-GCC Health Promotion Club added $563. A check was presented at CMH on June 24.

In addition, the Sandy Speenburgh Scholarship was also awarded, funded this year by the C-GCC Foundation. The Sandy Speenburgh Award is given to a leader with the ability to integrate academic knowledge, clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and ethical resolve in providing care to patients, and was presented to Chelsea Laine Trapanese ’20, of Hurley.
