A Message from the Office of Community Engagement and Professional Development Dear CoGreene Community, As 2021 comes to a close, the Office of Community Engagement and Professional Development (CE-PD) eagerly awaits the new year – the ideal time to evaluate the past, re-set priorities, and pursue new opportunities “that have never been”. While different for every person, lifelong learning is the mantra of Columbia-Greene Community College. This spring, CE-PD is offering 18 new noncredit courses, as well as many returning favorites. From Introduction to Creative Writing, to Cookie Decorating, Botanical Dyeing of Fabrics, Fusion Dance, Japanese Culture and Food, and more, these personal enrichment classes provide the catalyst to embark on new creative endeavors. Professional Development courses in computer skills, conflict resolution, project management, and other certifications can assist those looking to explore alternative job tracks and/or hone employment skills. The partnership with Black Rocket Productions continues as well with innovative STEAM classes for children ages eight to 14, and the collaboration with ed2go™ offers online, self-directed courses in hundreds of topics. Moreover, CE-PD continues to encourage College faculty and staff to teach noncredit courses, and selected classes this spring will feature instructors from Admissions, Automotive Technology, Career Services, and Criminal Justice. These partnerships pave the way for the development of industryrecognized certificates and micro-credentials,

a shorter, more flexible path to competency achievement in specific skills. Many microcredentials are in the works, so keep an eye out for future opportunities! With its holistic approach to education, Columbia-Greene recognizes that all individuals have a different definition of success, and every student starts on, or continues, a selected path from many directions. The College’s new mission statement – Columbia-Greene Community College offers individualized guidance in a respectful learning environment, inspiring students to reach their academic goals and become engaged citizens. – lies at the heart of lifelong learning, and CE-PD strives to provide opportunities for all students to reach their goals – whether learning to create a Renaissance-style oil painting, becoming a Notary Public, or receiving a certification in First Aid and CPR. The College looks forward to seeing you on campus soon! Happy Holidays!

Sincerely, Amanda Karch Director of Community Engagement and Professional Development

Natural History Museum Joins Renowned Herbaria Consortium Joann Lake, a retired member of the College’s Information Technology department, has been integral in developing the software needed to collect and maintain photographs of the Museum’s collections, and volunteer Doug Jones created the software for the College to maintain a database on its website.

Columbia-Greene Community College proudly announces its Natural History Museum recently entered a new partnership with the renowned Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria (CNABH). Over the years, the College has amassed an amazing collection of bryophytes, thanks to dedicated volunteers and their tireless work. Physically, the Consortium’s database – with international reach – provides a portal to the bryophytes housed in the Museum with digitally available scientific information, precise georeferencing, and breathtaking photographs of mosses including microscopic views of their plant, leaf, and cellular structure. This database can be updated in real time as the collection acquires new specimens. The College’s Natural History Museum started in 1976 with a single Wood Thrush study skin. The new Bryophtye Collection joins a Bird Study Skin Collection, a Bird Egg and Nest Collection, and a Plant Herbarium Collection. In fact, the Museum currently boasts more than 2,000 different specimens, including a bilateral gynandromorphic Black-throated Blue Warbler – likely the only such specimen in any collection in the world – according to Dr. William E. Cook, Professor Emeritus of Biology, ornithological expert, and the Museum’s Founder and Curator. The Museum also houses endangered species such as the Bald Eagle, Short-eared Owl, and Loggerhead Shrike.

Dr. William Cook launched the National History Museum in 1976.

Specimens from outside the United States include the Emu, White-backed Vulture, Eagle Owl, Pygmy Falcon, Eurasian Kestrel, Reddish Hermit, and more. Two retired Columbia County residents have been volunteering their time for months at the College, assisting in expanding the Natural History Museum. Judith Byrnes-Enoch and Larry Enoch of Kinderhook, both biologists, have been coming to the Museum each week since April 2017, working closely with Dr. Cook. Together they’ve tackled a number of tasks in that time and continue to photograph the plant specimens in the Bryophyte Collection to add new digital records to the Museum’s database.

Other helpful contributors, like Tom Phillips, have aided in identifying and collecting additional specimens, including a Didymodon acutus, previously unrecorded in Columbia County. Also providing support is Dr. Sean Robinson of SUNY Oneonta and Curator of the Jewell and Arlene Moss Settle Herbarium, who designated Dr. Cook as an administrator for the College’s Bryophyte Collection in June 2021. “I couldn’t have done this alone,” Dr. Cook emphasizes. “The collections on campus result from years of collaboration with faculty, staff, and members of the community. I am always overjoyed to share our collections for the purpose of scientific research, educational programs both inside and outside the College, and as a resource for artists locally and now internationally.” To learn more about this wonderful resource at the College, check out https://www2.sunycgcc.edu/ naturalhistorymuseum/index_2.cfm. Library Expands New York Heritage Collections During the summer, Columbia-Greene’s Library team added another collection to the newly created History and Heritage Digital Collection that not only advances the College’s vision to inspire the community and foster lifelong learning but also the Hudson River Valley initiatives. In the past year, Library users have discovered The Arthur Koweek Collection: Hudson Urban Renewal and Barns of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains: An Introduction. Currently in progress is the Columbia-Greene Community College History Collection that documents the College’s storied journey from its founding in Athens, New York, in 1966 to the present. These Collections contribute to the stories that make this region unique and complement the Library’s local history and rare book offerings.

The Arthur Koweek Collection: Hudson Urban Renewal The late Arthur Koweek, owner of the Town Fair toy and baby furniture shop on Warren Street in Hudson from 1950 to 2003, chaired the Hudson City Planning Commission during the urban renewal project from 1971 – 1973. According to Ted Hilscher, Professor Emeritus of History, this initiative “transformed neighborhoods from west of Front Street, north of Warren Street, and west of Second Street to the Hudson River”. Koweek’s slides – now accessible for the first time in 50 years with narrative provided by Professor Hilscher – document the affected areas with images of buildings that later were demolished.

Lisk Barn, Roberts Hill Road, New Baltimore

Barns of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains: An Introduction Curated by Professor Emeritus Hilscher, this Collection introduces viewers to the art of identifying and understanding barns and their associated outbuildings in several New York counties including Columbia, Delaware, Greene, and Schenectady. Starting with the cultural origins of surviving “vernacular” barns, the narrative accompanying the slides explains specific features and different areas of the barn as well as the uses for outbuildings typically found on a family farm.

Columbia-Greene Community College History Collection

will contain the College’s yearbooks, newsletters, ephemera, and photographs of employees, students, special events, and facilities from the opening of the institution in 1969 through the present. Currently on view are issues of Communiqué, a newsletter with the slogan, “The Biggest Little College in the World”; Gemini, the student newspaper; Inner Visions, a literary magazine; and Nightline, a newsletter for adult and/or part-time students. The Library participates in the SUNYConnect initiative to share collections across the SUNY System and is a member of the Southeastern New York 1975 Gemini : Columbia-Greene Library Community College Yearbook Resources Council. Renaissance Style of Portrait Painting

Working from classic portraits from the Renaissance to the Romantic Periods, students will learn the basics of how to enlarge by scaling a transfer to the canvas and how to build an accurate drawing by utilizing both transfer lines based on the diagonal proportion and negative space. Stretch and Flow: Yoga with Julia*

Yoga helps to balance the muscles by bringing ease and alignment back into the body. The practice of yoga provides a much-needed pause at the end of each day. This class is well suited for students who are looking for a chance to slow down at the end of the day, move and stretch, and bring ease back into their body. While no experience is necessary, students should have a mat. No other materials are needed, but two blocks and a blanket can make the practice more accessible. Telepathy, Doppelgangers, Reincarnation. These and other discomfiting topics often ignored or dismissed in the practical, workaday world are the very inspiration for authors who write a type of short story that might be called the “weird tale.” This is a literary known as Speculative Fiction. Over the course of five class sessions, students will read and discuss short stories and essays by a variety of authors, including Ray Bradbury, Robert M. Coates, Sigmund Freud, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Shirley Jackson, and Joyce Carol Oates. Each class meeting will be conducted as a “literary soiree,” that is, a social gathering with a decided purpose in attending closely to those things that “go bump in the night” and their fascination. The goal will be not to explain away these strange phenomena often derided as “figments of the imagination,” but rather to develop an appreciation for the many mysteries encountered in everyday lives.

PR 68554-1A *New!* Relationships Matter! Engaging with Friends, Family, and Colleagues Restoratively Our lives are made up of relationships - some casual, others friendly, many significant, and some deeply personal and meaningful. Relationships are complicated, and the hurt and confusion when relationships break down are familiar to us all. Repairing these rifts, or better yet preventing them, can feel out of reach – not wanting to make things worse, yet not confident enough to entangle ourselves further. Working within a restorative framework for more than 20 years with people of all ages and backgrounds, the instructor has wit-

nessed how people suffer when they feel harmed. A restorative framework increases our emotional literacy and our ability to stay present when overcome with powerful emotions and feelings of having been wronged. By developing awareness of emotional triggers, and of feelings and needs, students will learn to stay engaged in a mindful and authentic way, and preserve and enhance the relationships most important to them. Katherine Stoessel earned a BA and MA in Education from New York University and Columbia University respectively. She also received a Graduate Certificate from the International Centre for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution, and has attended multiple institutions for this type of work in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Expand workplace knowledge and skills with the Career Institute and Connecting with Today’s Job Seekers.

This spring, the Office of Career Success and Experiential Learning will offer a new – and free – course, Connecting with Today’s Job Seekers. The interactive and hands-on workshop provides the opportunity for business owners and managers to tailor their job postings and listings in ways that resonate with those seeking employment in a post-COVID world. With today’s labor market undergoing unprecedented challenges in the Capital District Region including low unemployment and divergent generational mindsets, employers daily compete for top-notch candidates like never before. Those who enroll in this course will learn how life experiences influence how job candidates respond to employment opportunities, how they communicate, and what they expect from their careers. Taught by Kelly Ann Radzik, Columbia-Greene’s Director of Career Success and Experiential Learning, students will benefit from her recent experience as a Training Specialist for Human Resources Divisions at midsized companies in the Hudson Valley where she provided great insights into the younger generations’ attitudes about their personal and professional lives. As a recent cover headline in

the Albany Business Review proclaimed, “Death to the Standard Work Week: The Traditional 9 – 5 is Out”. Connecting with Today’s Job Seekers will meet virtually on March 16, 2022, or in person on April 5, 2022.

Workplace Professionalism Micro-Credential Career Services and Experiential Learning also offers another opportunity through the Career Institute where participants learn from business and higher education professionals about essential workplace knowledge and skills in professionalism, teamwork, and interpersonal communication. Those who attend all sessions and complete the capstone project will receive a Workplace Professionalism micro-credential, documented through Credly, that can be incorporated into a LinkedIn profile.
