Discover the Joy of Learning at CoGreene Meet the Team

College Offers New “Learn and Earn” Partnership with Olana

Amanda Karch Amanda Karch recently became the Interim Director of Community Engagement and Professional Development following a two-year stint as the College’s Event Specialist. Prior to Columbia-Greene, she served as the Assistant Manager for Barnes and Noble in Kingston, NY, and for many years taught English in the summer school program at Catskill High School. Spending her days surrounded by books and booklovers of all subjects ingrained an appreciation for the value of lifelong learning. She believes that continuing education epitomizes Michelangelo’s words, “I am still learning.” She looks forward to expanding the College’s non-credit and continuing education programs as well as community engagement opportunities. Katie Davis Katie Davis, Assistant Director of Community Engagement and Professional Development, joined the Columbia-Greene team at the beginning of March 2021. Previously she was the Visitor Operations and Engagement Manager at Frederic Church’s Olana, the beautiful 19thcentury artist’s home and estate that borders the College’s campus. She has a passion for education and is thrilled to be able to encourage lifelong learning. A recent transplant from Guilderland, NY, Katie is looking forward to building partnerships and becoming more acquainted with Columbia and Greene Counties.

This fall Columbia-Greene will be partnering with its neighbor, The Olana Partnership, to offer an exciting new “learn and earn” initiative in the fields of business, art, and environmental science. The yearlong engagement for students interested in local history, fine arts, the environment, and/or non-profit careers culminates in a series of paid workforce and internship experiences.

seasonal employment opportunities at the Olana Museum Store and within the Visitor Engagement and Interpretation department. For more information, contact Kelly Ann Radzik at kellyann.radzik@ sunycgcc.edu.

In the first semester, students in the above disciplines will become more acquainted with the organization’s storied history through staff-led informational sessions and/or class visits to Olana. Enhanced opportunities for engagement will follow in spring 2022, as students deepen their understanding of Olana and its operation as a public park and historic site focused on preservation, education, interpretation, and engagement. Completing this course of study will enable students to apply for a subsequent paid internship and workforce development opportunities. Each internship will be eligible for College credit corresponding with the student’s line of study. Those who participate in the summer internship will be encouraged to apply for future paid

Community Garden Thrives Through Pandemic protocols, the Garden thrived – augmenting the on-campus food pantry with fresh produce and involving students at the C-GCC Daycare Center whenever possible. Cavanagh and Wase both feared the Garden might fall into disrepair without people to tend to its rows after March 2020. However, some early spring planting meant seedlings already were sprouting, and volunteers soon began devising ways to tend to them in socially-distanced ways. “Because the students had started many of the plants from seed in their homes before the pandemic, getting plants in the spring was not a problem,” said Wase. “Creating a system for maintaining the Garden was more of a challenge, but the Garden produced very well.”

Nursing student and founder of the C-GCC Meditation and Wellness Club Meredith Cavanagh of Catskill was instrumental in resurrecting the C-GCC Community Garden after a brief time in the weeds.

Wase said volunteers adhered to a schedule throughout the summer and fall months, arriving to tend to the Garden masked and alone, or in small family groups. A hose was left nearby for watering, with an invitation to any staff coming on-campus to help the cause, and several staff and community members donated plants to diversify crops.

While the campus has been quiet, it’s been a few lively semesters at the Columbia-Greene Community College Community Garden, as students and staff work hard to keep it growing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to the College limiting access to campus in keeping with COVID-19

This season, the Garden continues to grow: Meditation and Wellness Club members tested and winterized the soil, laid leaves on the beds for mulch, and planted garlic and asparagus for a summer harvest. The C-GCC Buildings and Grounds crew and members of the Construction Technology Department built and relocated new raised beds and donated wildflower seeds for the first planting. A sign created by local woodcarver and long-time C-GCC employee Jon Powell of Blackhead Mountain Bear Works will be reinstalled by C-GCC Construction Technology students as a capstone to that project. “We envision the Garden as a source of food for students, employees, and the community’s food pantries, and will provide opportunities to teach children about gardening and healthy eating,” said Wase, noting that the Meditation and Wellness Club and Health Matters Committee are now planning the 2021 season. “We will be looking for volunteers and donations to build a compost area, and we are also hoping to have Construction Technology students help us.” For more information about the C-GCC Community Garden, e-mail Robbin Wase at robbin.wase@sunycgcc.edu.

In 2011 Elizabeth Winig ’12, Professor Emeritus of History Ted Hilscher, and Associate Professor of Communication Studies Maya Greene created the Community Garden. After some time in the weeds, the Garden came to life in 2019 thanks to nursing student and founder of the C-GCC Meditation and Wellness Club Meredith Cavanagh of Catskill, and Robbin Wase, administrative assistant for the Division of Nursing and Meditation and Wellness Club advisor. Soon after, C-GCC’s Health Matters Committee joined the cause, creating a strong group of students, staff, faculty, and community supporters to care for the rows.

Tomatoes, kale, swiss chard, hot peppers, onions, okra, celery, green peppers, and garlic were harvested in 2020 and donated to the Salvation Army Food Pantry, C-GCC students, and employees.

Studio Painting-Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor

This class is for the beginner and intermediate painter alike and centers on individual instruction. In addition to painting a still life, students should bring multiple photographs to class from which they will create a unique painting. Combine landscape photos with structures, wildlife, people, vehicles, or whatever. Meld great photos of pets and/or people into a group portrait – only one’s imagination will limit the creation! Students using oil paint or watercolors will

study traditional methods; acrylic painters will learn how these “classic” art techniques apply to this relatively new medium. Those working in oil or acrylic will use the under painting and color glaze methods (grisaille). They also will learn tonal values through the completion of monochromatic painting with color “glazing” – keeping the problems of form and values separate from the application of the color. A finished painting, suitable for framing, is the goal of this class. The materials list is available from ralahm@gmail.com. Students should be ready to start painting at the first class. Robert A. Stretch and Flow: Yoga with Julia

Yoga helps to balance the muscles by bringing ease and alignment back into the body. The practice of yoga provides a much-needed pause at the end of each day. Through each movement and moment, students will flow through different yoga poses, connect back with breathing, build strength, tone muscles, find length and flexibility, and return to balance. This class is well suited for students who are looking for a chance to slow down at the end of the day, move and stretch, and bring ease back into their body. While no experience is necessary, students should have a mat. No other materials are needed, but two blocks and a blanket can make the practice more accessible. Julia Shea is a 500-hour certified yoga instructor who approaches yoga from a gentler, slow flow angle while incorporating many yoga styles into her practice and teaching. INSTRUCTOR:

Meditation and the Art of Tarot

An exploration and examination of the tarot through the lens of art, contemplation, and mythology. Students of Meditation and the Art of the Tarot will learn to work with the archetypes depicted in the major arcana as a tool for self-discovery and evolution by analyzing, discussing, and reflecting on the symbology of Patricia Coleman Smith’s artwork of the Rider-Waite tarot deck juxtaposed with Joseph Campbell’s stages of The Hero’s Journey. The course is offered in two, six-week sessions. The first session covers The Fool to the Hermit card and the second session covers The Wheel of Fortune to The World card. Suitable for beginner to accomplished tarot readers, meditators, healers, writers, artists, art-lovers, and anyone interested in learning a novel approach to developing self-knowledge through meditation. Highly recommended for those who have had difficulty learning to meditate via traditional methods. Please note that it is highly recommended to take the first session prior to the second.
