CoGreene Presents: An Evening with The Felice Brothers SATURDAY, APRIL 11 • ARTS CENTER THEATRE, 7 P.M.

Many a rock magazine, music reviewer, and fan-blog reports that The Felice Brothers got their start busking in New York City subways. At CoGreene, we tend to trace the band’s history back a bit farther: to the childhoods of core members Ian and James Felice, who hail from Palenville. On Saturday, April 11, the brothers and their band-mates Jesske Hume and Will Lawrence are coming home – in the midst of an international tour – to perform at C-GCC’s Arts Center Theatre. The American folk-country rock band is currently promoting their latest album, Undress, which was recorded in Germantown and nominated for Best International Album of the Year by Americana Music Association UK just this November. In the band’s 13-year run, they’ve performed at such well-heeled festivals as the Newport Folk Festival, Bonnaroo,

The Twin County Science Expo returns to C-GCC on Saturday, March 28, showcasing outstanding student scientists and their experiments and projects from the 20192020 school-year. A panel of expert judges will award prizes for first, second, third, and fourth places at grade levels five through eight, along with a Best in Show Grand Prize. Students, parents, and the public may view the exhibits prior to the award presentations, which will begin around noon. Snow date: March 29. Wednesday, April 15, 6 p.m. The Saland Forum, Professional Academic Center Local historians Linda Bouchey and Al Vinck will explore the early role models who influenced a young Eleanor Roosevelt. This lecture will also discuss the First Lady’s role in the early Civil Rights movement, her push for equal treatment for women and the poor, and her continued work in these arenas even after Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s death in 1945. Learn the basics of color, harmony, discord and values. Flowers are the subjects chosen for this class because it forces the artist to use color. The class covers some exercises in color using the three primary colors red, blue, and yellow. Students make a color wheel, mix colors, and learn the use of cool and warm colors. A study in green and a special study using the white of the paper as the lowest value are also undertaken. All work is done without preliminary sketching, since our purpose is to loosen up, enjoy color and have fun. A list of required materials is available from the Community Services Office. Spinning Yarn

Have you ever wondered how spinning was done? Do you have sheep, alpacas, llamas, rabbits, sheepdogs, or mohair goats in your life? Students are invited to fashion yarn from fur in a timeless process, by hand on a drop spindle, or more quickly with a spinning wheel. No experience is necessary to take this class. Materials needed for this class are a spinning wheel or drop spindle and four ounces of clean wool roving or top. Two spinning wheels are available to rent for $20 by calling 518.828.4554. Knitting A Scarf with Wool

For those new to the craft, this class will teach you the basics of knitting with soft and renewable wool yarn. Topics to be covered will include casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, garter stitch, ribbing stitch, cable stitch, seed stitch, joining yarn, and casting off. Pottery Wheel Throwing

Learn the fundamental skills of throwing on a potter’s wheel or improve the skills you already possess. This course is geared toward individualized instruction based on your skill level. Individuals new to the wheel are introduced to the skills necessary to create cups, bowls, plates and more. Studio Painting-Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor

This class is for both the beginner and intermediate painter and centers on individual instruction. In addition to offering students a stilllife from which to paint, students are encouraged to bring to class multiple photographs from which they will create a unique painting. Combine landscape photos with structures, wildlife, people, vehicles or whatever, and meld great photos of pets and/or people into a group portrait. Only

one’s imagination will limit what one can create. Students using oil paint or watercolors will study traditional methods – acrylic painters will learn how these “classic” art techniques apply to this relatively new medium. Those working in oil or acrylic will use the under painting and color glaze methods (grisaille). They will learn tonal values through the completion of monochromatic painting with color “glazing” – keeping the problems of form and values separate from the application of the color. Getting Great Real Estate Deals When Buying or Selling in Difficult Times

Because of difficult times in the economy, there are some excellent deals in real estate. This class will teach the pros and cons of foreclosures, short sales, rent with option to buy, owner financing, and buying for no-money-down. Also, it will illustrate how to wisely buy or sell investment property, primary homes, multi-families, and vacation homes. After this class, students will know how to research property at the tax assessor’s office, the county clerk’s office, and various other methods that can be used to research a property including using web sites. Renaissance Style of Portrait Painting

Working from classic portraits from the Renaissance to the Romantic Periods, students will learn the basics of how to enlarge by scaling a transfer to the canvas and how to build an accurate drawing by utilizing both transfer lines based on the diagonal proportion and negative space. The painting process begins with the Brunaille Technique (monochromatic done in browns) to achieve the under painting. Flesh tone areas are enhanced using the popular period “dead layer” (Verdaccio - a green tint used to achieve realistic flesh tones) and finally, how to properly mix, apply and lay color glazes. This course covers introduction to the QuickBooks environment, terminology and navigation through the desktop program. Create a Website with WordPress Lab

This is a small group learning experience offering individualized attention to allow students to take their websites to the next level. Geared toward people who have completed WordPress Levels 1 and 2, or who already have a WordPress website and want help in updating and enhancing it, this lab will cover topics based on the needs of the participants. Each student will have the opportunity to bring specific real-life problems or wish list items to class, where they will be discussed as a group, and solutions will be explored. The professionals affected by this mandate include physicians, physician assistants, specialist assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, optometrists, and podiatrists. The law requires that persons licensed in the health professions listed above, who practice in New York State, must complete approved course work or training regarding infection control on or before July 1, 1994 and update that course work within every four-year period thereafter. The curriculum content includes professional responsibilities for infection control; modes and mechanisms of disease transmission; use of engineering and work practice controls; create and maintain a safe patient care environment; and prevention and control of communicable diseases in health care workers. Also discussed will be the insights into the use of antibiotics in the treatment of infectious diseases. Communicable diseases discussed will include HIV Infection; AIDS; Tuberculosis (TB); Hepatitis A. B. and C; pediculosis; STDs; Lyme Disease, and others as needs dictate. The Security Guard Act of 1992 became law on July 17, 1992, with the approval of the Governor. The text of the legislative intent is as follows: the Legislature hereby finds that the provision of the contractual and proprietary security services is a rapidly growing industry in the state, particularly in metropolitan areas. Both private enterprise and government increasingly rely upon security services as a supplement to traditional law enforcement to protect people and property. Approximately 500,000 security guards in New York State are mandated to obtain an eighthour course and other training under the terms of the new Security Guard Act effective January 1, 1994. Prior to obtaining a security officer’s license in New York State, attending and passing this course is required. The cultural roots of modern stand-up comedy can be credited to the three ancient Western philosophers: Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Through consideration of selected readings and lively discussion, participants will explore why something is funny, how something is funny and which things are funnier than others in our culture. Participants will apply the principals learned in class to construct their first three-to-four minute monologue or reconstruct an existing original one. This course teaches the basic commands needed to control a dog and make him or her a more enjoyable companion. Commands covered in class include sit, stay, come, stand for examination and grooming, down, and heel on lead. Depending upon progress, some off lead work may also be covered. A.K.C. (American Kennel Club) competition rules are also taught for those who wish to pursue obedience titles. The following equipment is needed: well-fitting choke type collar of chain or nylon (allow twoto-three inches beyond neck size) and a sixfoot-long training lead of leather or nylon web. A 20-to-30-foot-long line is optional. These items are available at most pet supply stores. The first lesson is taught without the dogs. All dogs need proof of DHL and Parvovirus inoculations. A rabies vaccination is recommended for all dogs over six months of age. Dog handlers are required to wear non-marking rubber soled shoes or sneakers to each class. Backyard and urban beekeeping is a fun and personally rewarding hobby that has a positive community impact, helps instill a conservation ethic and promotes environmental awareness. Some enter beekeeping for the reward of rich, golden honey, a natural and healthy food; others to simply learn more about these remarkable creatures. Regardless of the motivation, beekeeping requires some basic planning and preparation to be successful. This course covers basic honeybee biology, the fundamentals of setting up a hive, and a seasonal management approach for sustaining a healthy and productive honeybee colony. The Young Adults Education for Success (YES) Program provides one-on-one and group instruction for young adults ages 18-21 striving to improve their prospects for workplace and career success. Program services include a workplace skills assessment and instruction in reading, writing and mathematics up to the precollege level. Preparation for lifelong learning including study and computer literacy skills are also provided. Students entering without a high school diploma are encouraged to undertake the new national High School Equivalency Exam. TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) as the culmination of the program. YES accepts students on an ongoing basis. Students have up to 260 classroom hours to complete the program. Develop Your Intuitive Skills

Intuition is like a muscle. It needs exercise to become strong, flexible and reliable. In this class the instructor will help you learn how to get in touch with your intuition and guide you along the path to developing it. Intuition is an important resource in your business and personal life. We will do a guided imagery exerciser for you to “meet” your intuition. Horseback Riding, 18+ Years of Age

Learn the basics or brush up on your English riding and horsemanship skills. Major topics include safe handling of the horse, proper grooming and readying the horse for riding (tacking). Basic horse psychology and equipment (tack) are also addressed. An hour-long riding lesson will

follow the groundwork. Instruction stresses clear communication and balanced position for the benefit of the horse-human partnership. Facility includes dust-free indoor arena. Lessons, horses, and helmets are provided. Students should provide their own boots with a ½” heel. Maximum enrollment per class is four students. Tarot in Your Life 1 – Getting to Know the Tarot

In this first of four sessions, students will explore the fascinating world of the Tarot. Various Tarot decks will be examined to discover the many interpretations of characters and symbols. A short history of the Tarot will be discussed. Come join us on the Fools journey through the Major Arcana. The Major Arcana is the first 22 cards and is the foundation of the 78-card Tarot deck. A Rider Waite Tarot Deck is required for this class and must be purchased prior to coming to class. Students should bring pen and paper for note taking, and any questions you may have about the Tarot. A minimum of 5 students is required to hold the class. Introduction to Dressage

Dressage is a French term used to describe the art or method of training a horse in obedience and in precision of movement. CGC Therapy Dog Prep Class

Therapy dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. The most important characteristics are your dog’s temperament and dependable good behavior. Your instructor is a Canine Good Citizen and therapy dog evaluator, and is fluent with the requirements for both programs. This

class prepares you and your dog for therapy dog evaluation. While training classes are not required to test for most therapy dog organizations, it is beneficial to you and your dog to be well prepared for the test. We will help you fine-tune your dog’s obedience skills and help your dog to be ready to succeed with confidence. Pet parents will be provided with a list of Therapy Dog evaluators and testing opportunities in the area. Dogs entering this course must have proof of Rabies vaccination and should not be aggressive toward people. Dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars (including Martingales) made of leather, fabric, or chain. They may also wear body harnesses. Body harnesses should not restrict the movement of the dog. The leash should be made of either leather or fabric. Prior completion of the Beginner Obedience Course is helpful, but not necessary if the dog is not easily excited. Please do bring your dog to the first class.

Polite Walking Class

Does your dog pull you all around the town? Would you prefer your dog to walk politely on leash? In this very focused class we will use modern, science-based animal training techniques to teach your dog the skills to be a polite walking companion. Dogs can wear a flat buckle or martingale (limited slip) collar, or a well-fitted harness. Leashes should be nylon or leather and 4-6 feet long. Registration is limited to four dog/handler teams to make sure everyone gets enough individual instruction. This class is taught using science-based, force and intimidation free methods and techniques. The first class is a mandatory people only orientation, please do not bring the dogs to the first class. This course teaches owners how to work with their dogs, or puppies four months and older, and is designed to help the owner learn how to socialize their pets safely. We will cover the basics: sitting with distraction, down, walking on loose leash, coming when called, and proper manners at home and in public. This class is especially good for new owners or for dogs from rescue that could use help fitting into their new homes. Different types of training equipment will also be covered. The first lesson is taught without the dogs. All dogs need proof of DHL and Parvovirus inoculations. A rabies vaccination is recommended for all dogs over six months of age as well as the Kennel Cough vaccine. No chain leashes or retractable leashes are allowed. Dog handlers are required to wear non-marking rubber soled shoes or sneakers to each class. The instructor reserves the right to counsel out dogs that exhibit unsafe behavior. first year of beekeeping! A honeybee colony is constantly evolving. For the first year the colony was simply getting established, but a second-year hive that has survived winter is now ready to take off in population, which will require a different set of skills to manage than what was needed a year ago. Now that a new season is nearly upon us, what should you be doing for the coming year? What are your goals now that you have a little experience: To collect more honey? Add more hives to your apiary? For “newbees” wanting to expand upon their success in their first year, or learn why their first year wasn’t quite successful, it’s all about having a plan and getting the basics right. We’ll talk about what worked, what didn’t, and how to improve your bee-keeping skills with more in-depth discussion on what is needed to increase honey production; making splits to rear your own queens and build up your hives; catching swarms; pest management; what to look for when conducting inspections, and other hive management topics to help your apiary thrive. Construction Technology Students Build Their Skills Locally The first-ever class of Construction Technology students at C-GCC is already receiving factory product training through a partnership with Herrington’s Lumber, Millwork and Building Supplies of Hudson, N.Y. According to Assistant Professor of Construction Technology John Lombardi, C-GCC’s Construction Technology Certificate program – which launched this fall and offers a Construction Technology Certificate that can be completed in one year – is designed to offer students hands-on experience with current, real-world tools, materials, and tactics. As such, partnerships with businesses and organizations in the area have become a key focus of the growing program, and Herrington’s has taken the lead. “Herrington’s is a local business that supports many of the finest construction professionals within the Hudson Valley,” said Lombardi, noting that students have received training in EPDM rubber roofing products – a durable, synthetic rubber roofing membrane used in

flat-roof applications – from visiting Technical Educators Nick Meyers of Weatherbond Roofing Systems and Matt Shaw of Hutting Building Products, a distributor for Weatherbond, through the partnership. The company also sponsored six Construction Technology students and members of the program’s faculty at a recent Finish Carpentry Skills Clinic held at Catamount Ski Resort in Hillsdale, N.Y., and as the fall semester drew to a close, C-GCC Construction Technology students toured Herrington’s main facility as well as Universal Forest Products in Hudson and the Thomas Cole National Historic Site in Catskill, N.Y. C-GCC’s new Construction Technology Certificate program has an emphasis on preservation carpentry, and was developed in response to the growing need for skilled tradespeople – particularly in New York State.
