C-GCC Chosen for National Grant to Assist Rural Community Colleges

COGREENE IN THE COMMUNITY:

• SATELLITE LOCATIONS Fall 2021 C-GCC is proud to partner with several community businesses and organizations across the region to offer a wide range of non-credit programming for students of all ages this fall, including: Countrywool 59 Spring Road Hudson, NY, 12534

C-GCC is the only college in New York State to be chosen for the Building Resiliency in Rural Communities for the Future of Work initiative, designed to increase rural colleges’ abilities to prepare students for careers in today’s economy.

C-GCC is one of seven community colleges in the nation, and the only college in New York State, selected by the Achieving the Dream network (ATD) to participate in a new initiative: Building Resiliency in Rural Communities for the Future of Work. ATD, currently at the forefront of the most comprehensive non-governmental reform movement for student success in higher education’s history, launched Building Resiliency to increase rural colleges’ abilities to prepare students for careers in today’s economy. According to C-GCC President Carlee R. Drummer, Ph.D., the three-year, $258,000 grant is one of the largest private grants ever received by the College. “This partnership will enable the College to build on its momentum of strengthening and enhancing academic and personal supports, as well as narrowing equity gaps so that increased numbers of students will be able to find jobs that pay familysustaining wages,” she said. Achieving the Dream President and CEO Karen A. Stout, Ph.D., added, “Rural

community colleges have long served as drivers of their communities’ economic and civic vitality, playing a critical role in ensuring social and economic mobility. “Building Resiliency in Rural Communities for the Future of Work adds to ATD’s experience collaborating with rural colleges in our network, as well as the nation’s tribal colleges and universities, offering new learning opportunities around the role of rural community colleges as workforce and economic development engines,” she noted. Founded in 2004, ATD leads a growing network of more than 300 community colleges in 45 states and the District of Columbia committed to helping students, particularly low-income and students of color, achieve their goals for academic success, personal growth, and economic opportunity. The Building Resiliency grant is made possible by funding from the Ascendium Education Group, Cognizant U.S. Foundation, JPMorgan Chase & Co., The Community Focus Fund at the Chicago Community Foundation, and Walmart.org. C-GCC joins a cohort of institutions located in Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Mexico, and North Carolina. For more information, visit achievingthedream.org.

According to Matthew Green, assistant dean of Enrollment Management at C-GCC and the course’s instructor, this free class will cover the admissions process; resources available for financial aid including alternative forms of funding; support and accessibility services, and how students can maximize the college experience for their benefit. “As overwhelming as the college process can be, students are not alone,” he said. “CoGreene wants to help them and their families learn to navigate this

“It is truly rewarding to reduce some of the frustrations and anxieties families might have in selecting and enrolling in a college,” said Green, noting that the course includes five separate workshops: “Choose a College,” “Pay for College,” “Support and Accessibility Services,” “Academic Advising and College Lingo,” and “Your First Day,” that will meet on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Students and their families may choose to register for any or all of the workshops. Studio Painting – Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor

This class is for the beginner and intermediate painter alike and centers on individual instruction. In addition to painting a still-life, students should bring multiple photographs to class from which they will create a unique painting. Combine landscape photos with structures, wildlife, people, vehicles, or whatever. Meld great photos of pets and/or people into a group portrait – only one’s imagination will limit the creation! Students using oil paint or watercolors will study traditional methods; acrylic painters will learn how these “classic” art techniques apply to this relatively new medium. Those working in oil or acrylic will use the under painting and color glaze methods (grisaille). They also will learn tonal values through the completion of monochromatic painting with color “glazing” – keeping the problems of form and values separate from the application of the color. A finished painting, suitable for framing, is the goal of this class. The materials list is available from ralahm@gmail.com. Students should be ready to start painting at the first class. Robert A. Working with classic portraits from the Renaissance to the Romantic Periods, students will learn the basics of how to enlarge by scaling a transfer to the canvas and how to build an accurate drawing by utilizing both transfer lines based on the diagonal proportion and negative space. The painting process begins with the Brunaille Technique (monochromatic in browns) to achieve the under painting. Flesh tone areas are enhanced using the popular period “dead layer” (Verdaccio – a green tint used to achieve realistic flesh tones), and finally, how to properly mix, apply, and lay color glazes. Working with pencils of various types, students will learn to draw basic shapes, and use visual measurements. An understanding of the many kinds of perspective used in art will also be discussed: linear perspective, one point, two point, and multiple point; aerial perspective/ creating distance through tone gradations; edge perspective, and foreshortening. Students will use a still-life set up to illustrate many of these concepts. Important basics of drawing will be covered, including how to hold a pencil; applying even, light pressure to build up the drawing; how to sharpen drawing pencils properly, and using papers, drawing surfaces, and erasers. As students progress, a charcoal and sanguine drawing pencil method for drawing dating to the Italian Renaissance will be explored. The materials list is available from ralahm@gmail.com.

Students will develop their quotidian powers of observation and expression with watercolor. The art of sketching with watercolor with or without ink can be a fantastic medium to ‘see’ the beautiful and the mundane, and to interpret what students ‘see’ in a very personal way. Classes will help students build a habitual practice of looking and sketching in watercolor to enhance travel, as part of journaling, or to experience a subject more expressively than a quick snapshot. Students also will learn how to customize a versatile, limited palette, for easy and harmonious color. Children’s book illustrations will be used as a visual resource for exploring new techniques and a personal style. A materials list will be sent prior to first class.

*New!* The American Ghost Story

How better to spend the month of October than to be reading and discussing ghost stories? In this class, students will read four short works of fiction, one each by the authors Edgar Allan Poe, Fitz-James O’Brien, Edith Wharton, and Shirley Jackson. Possible topics for discussion include: What makes for a good ghost story? How do people account for the continued interest in ghost stories, despite the current “modern technological society”? Do ghosts exist outside of the stories told about them? The goal of the class will be not to explain away “figments of the imagination,” but rather to develop an appreciation for the many mysteries encountered in everyday life. John P. O’Grady was born in New Jersey and born again in the mountains of the American West. As an undergraduate he studied Forestry in the State of Maine, where he discovered the writings of Stephen King were far more interesting than cutting down trees, so he went on to pursue graduate studies in American Literature at the University of California, Davis. For more than 25 years, he served as a professor of literature and environmental studies. He now lives quietly in the Catskill Mountains, where he ponders the many peculiar episodes in the region’s history and occasionally writes about them. INSTRUCTOR:

There is nothing quite like admiring a painting by Thomas Cole or Sanford Gifford up-close: standing in front of the gilded-frame canvas in a gallery or museum, admiring the exquisite “landscape.” In this class, students will get to step into the actual place that inspired these famous 19th century works of art. Students will visit a few of the actual sites depicted by the artists in their paintings, all of which are still immediately recognizable, and discuss the difference between the experience of a place and the “transformation” of experience into a

work of art. This is a two-session, two-day course, held over the course of one weekend. The first class is a lecture and will be held at Mountain Top Library, and the second will be a guided hike conducted on-site in the vicinity of North Lake, the “birthplace of the Hudson River School.” The hike on the second day is about six miles of relatively easy hiking (no steep inclines). The course begins this fall with Foundations of Business, wherein students will learn the basics of management, marketing, business law, and related skills, ending the semester with draft business plans and the required paperwork to get their businesses started.

C-GCC and the Cairo Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to launch Growing Greene County, a program designed to provide specialized assistance to local smallbusiness entrepreneurs. Stacey Hills, assistant professor of Business, said the three-course, eightcredit program will meet at the Cairo Library on Wednesday nights, and will provide a toolkit of business skills to students. “This new offering is for those who’d like to start a small business, but may not know where or how to begin,”

In Spring 2022, the course continues with Entrepreneurship; building on the business plans created in the Foundations class, students will continue to work out the details of their plans, including pricing, promotions, funding, and growth strategies. Business Professional Development will be offered across the Fall and Spring semesters, to complement the students’ business plan development, and give them the opportunity to hone soft skills – particularly in the areas of networking and presentation.
