“Power Bonus” Turns Compact Tractors Into Industrial-Strength Snow Throwers “These single-stage blowers are the only reason we can do this contract.” Jeff Mitchell, the owner of Mitchell Property Maintenance in Millbank, Ontario, is beyond pleased with a customized Reist 2000 series snow thrower he has mounted on a fleet of ultracompact Steiner tractors. “We got them last year and survived the winter. The year before, we didn’t – and it was a nightmare! This year, it’s down to a fine science.” Two years ago, Mitchell won the snow removal contract for the sidewalks of the town of Elmira. Located near KitchenerWaterloo, Elmira is in the heart of southern Ontario’s snowbelt. Mitchell was tasked with winter maintenance for 62 km (about 35 miles) of sidewalks for the town of 10,000. He recalls the winter of 2012/13 painfully. “We owned two blowers for every tractor and it was non-
stop welding on a daily basis to try to honour the contract. This year, we go out for a nice 8-hour shift and we’re done! But the years before, it was more like 25 hours, and we still weren’t done!” Downsizing for tight walks The customized singlestage thrower that’s making life so much better for Jeff Mitchell is the latest development from Reist Industries. It’s no coincidence that Reist is also based in Elmira. Mitchell has been working with Reist equipment for many years. He and Brian Reist, the manufacturer’s thirdgeneration owner, have worked together for many years. The challenge of Elmira’s sidewalks contract was not the volume of work required, but the nature of the sidewalks in this historic rural community. “About 50% of the sidewalks are 42-inches in the old part of
town,” Mitchell explains. “In the newer parts you can do a 48-inch machine – but you don’t want to have 2 separate machines for one contract.” Mitchell needed a unique solution for the job – a tractor small enough to fit the sidewalks, plus a snow thrower that would work efficiently and reliably on such a small machine. Mitchell put together the right package with a Reist 2000 series snow thrower sized down to 42 inches on a Steiner 440 tractor. “There are only a couple of machines that will fit.” Mitchell continues, “Everything is 48” and bigger. They just don’t fit between guy-wires and poles, around the wheelchair ramps and mailboxes.” “They don’t break” He asked Reist for help, knowing the company’s history in snow blower engineering. “It’s common knowledge in the indus-

try: if you want to put on a snow blower that works, it’s a Reist,” Mitchell claims. “Reist had a frontmounted snow blower on tractors before tractors had a front PTO. They have mastered the big blowers they don’t break. There are other kinds of blowers out there, and I’ve had them all.” With its new line of snow throwers, Reist introduced an innovative singlestage system that can generate the power to throw snow efficiently. According to Brian Reist, “Whether you prefer PTO power or hydraulic, our latest singlestage throwers require 20% less horsepower than conventional two stage snow blowers. That 20% power bonus makes it possible for us to offer hydraulic drive kits for compact loaders and skid steers as small as 15 HP.” Right-sizing the equipment was just part of the job. But could such a small unit stand up to the work? “When we go out to work, we’re not nice to our equipment,” admits Mitchell. “I’ve tried to clog; tried to kill them – I’ve piled up windrows deliberately 4 ft. high and
Page 3
With its new line of snow throwers, Reist introduced an innovative single-stage system that can generate the power to throw snow efficiently. I just drove right through them! Clogging is not a problem anymore.” Mitchell especially appreciates having his nights off without welding his snow machines back together. Sidewalks, he feels, are the most demanding snow removal application. “It’s just continuous banging – every crack in the sidewalk is like a shock. The machine never stops getting beaten up, and every hundred feet, you’re driving over a curb. It’s a huge load on the tractors and, if I didn’t’ have those blowers, I couldn’t do it.” Cutting a smoother path To reduce the impact on both the snow thrower and the tractor, Reist equipped Mitchell’s small throwers
with a cutting edge designed to provide a snowplow-quality scrape. These single-stage units come with a carbon-fiber cutting edge that’s set on an angle, plus carbon fiber feet to help it glide over the cracks in the sidewalk. Mitchell’s sidewalk fleet is filled out with a Bobcat 110, also fitted with a Reist single-stage snow thrower. “It’s the smallest skid steer they made with a cab, but it’s still too big for 50% of the Elmira sidewalks. We only use it in the newer areas. That 62 km is more like double the distance you actually have to drive. But now, we do the entire town with a couple of machines in just a normal shift.” b

New Doosan DX170W-5 Wheeled Excavator The new 17 tonne DX170W-5 Stage IV compliant wheeled excavator from Doosan Construction Equipment provides significantly higher performance in every area, combining enhanced
comfort and controllability together with new features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility. Like all Doosan Stage IV
machines, a distinctive new machine styling scheme heralds the many design advances, which go well beyond simply meeting Stage IV emission regulations, setting a new benchmark for wheeled
excavators worldwide. From the standpoint of performance, the DX170W-5 has 10% more engine power, 5% more engine torque and 5% more traction force compared to the previous generation model. The swing speed can now reach 10.8 rpm/minute and swing torque has been increased by 4%. Main pump capacity has increased by 9% and thanks to the increased pressure in the new Negacon hydraulic system; there is a significant increase of 10% in

the bucket force and 3% in the arm force. The extra 220 kg in the weight of the counterweight in the DX170W-5, coupled with increases of 4 and 5 cm in the machine width and wheel base, respectively, have drastically increased lifting capacities while improving stability and comfort when driving. The over the front lifting capacity has increased by 10%, whilst the lifting capacity over the side has gone up by 6%. Other important aspects include the new ‘CabSus’ cab suspension system which reduces vibration by 20% and a massive 4 dBA reduction in cab noise, further increasing safety and comfort for the operator. Outstanding Comfort and Controllability The ergonomic and comfort features offered as standard in the new cab are among the best on the market and include the world exclusive Doosan jog shuttle switch; four work and four power modes; control of pressure and flow of the auxiliary lines directly from the operator’s seat; and joystick and pedal proportional control with super controllability via short and low stroke joysticks and a new system allowing usage of the two-way lines either from joystick or pedal. The operator also has the benefit of improved side visibility, a new userfriendly 7 inch FT LCD colour monitor control panel, and fully automatic climate control system, more storage compartments for paperwork and other items, as well as an improved layout with the most important switches grouped together within easy reach on the right console. The new pressurised cab incorporates sealing, air filters and increased air pressure inside to prevent dust from getting into the cab (ISO 10263-3). CoreTMS Fleet Management System as Standard In common with all Doosan Stage IV excavators above 14 tonne, the DX170W-5 is factoryinstalled with the new CoreTMS state-of-the-art wireless fleet monitoring system. Designed specifically for the Doosan range, the CoreTMS sys-
April 2015 tem is a new tool providing comprehensive information about machine performance in a dual mode (satellite, GSM). Because the software in the CoreTMS system has been upgraded to communicate directly with the EPOS system on a Doosan excavator, it is the only tool of its type capable of providing this level of information, delivering insightful and cost-saving data about equipment to help customers work more effectively. Also available for retro-fitting in a kit form, the CoreTMS system is supplied with a free 3-year subscription in new ‘W-5’ wheeled excavators and customers are provided with their own account so that they can manage the machines in their fleet using the system. Increased Power and Fuel Efficiency At the heart of the new DX170W-5 excavator is the well-proven 6-cylinder, turbocharged Doosan DL06P water-cooled diesel engine which offers convenience and lower costs by meeting Stage IV emission regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies. The DL06P engine provides an output of 113.3 kW (152 HP) at 2000 rpm, an increase of 10% in engine power. As well as the DL06P engine, which is one of the most reliable and fuel efficient ever produced by Doosan, new innovative and exclusive features have been introduced that reduce fuel consumption by an average of 10% compared to the previous generation model. Among these features is the new ‘Trip Meter Setting’ screen which allows operators to check fuel consumption daily (or over a desired period) directly from the control panel and to save even more fuel, there is a special Doosan-developed system, Smart Power Control (SPC), which monitors both engine and pump power and limits unnecessary outputs depending on whether the work is light or heavy. The SPC can be used with all 4 work modes (E, S, P, P+). Continued on page 5

Further fuel efficiency results from the electric fan clutch on the DX170W-5 excavator which drives the cooling fan at optimum speed. Based on coolant, hydraulic oil, cooled charged air temperatures and target engine speeds, the fan speed is controlled electrically – resulting in much lower fan noise and better fuel efficiency. A side-view camera is available as an option and the control panel allows the views from both the rear and side view cameras to be combined on the same screen, simply by pressing a button on the control panel. For more safety when using the cameras, a menu bar now stays open so that the operator can keep an eye out for warning symbols and the levels of key gauges. New boom lights on the front equipment more than double the lighting available and for better protection, a guard has been added as standard. The auto-idling rpm on
the DX170W-5 automatically increases from 800 rpm to 1100 rpm when the temperature goes below 10 °C. This boosts the efficiency of the heating inside the cab. Lower Total Cost of Ownership In the undercarriage, the chassis frame has been reinforced to reduce stress and improve durability. The outrigger frame has also been strengthened by moving to a box type assembly, with an increase in the thickness of most parts for additional strength. The dozer blade and H-Link have been reinforced to increase rigidity and optimise tightening between the two structures. The height of the dozer blade has been increased along with an improved shape to facilitate pulling and mixing of materials. The size of the outrigger covers has been reduced to lessen the possibility of damage. Made from cast steel, the arm end boss and arm link boss and side plates
have been combined to increase durability. Piping layouts have been redesigned to avoid interferences between hoses and pipes, decreasing pressure loss as a result. The twin tyre rubber spacer has a new symmetric design and a new tight rim connection ensures no bending and a good connection to withstand impacts from stones/other materials. To further maximise durability and reduce noise, the DX170W-3 is equipped with EM (Enhanced Macro-surface) bushings, which are also much more effective than regular bushings when greased. Air pre-cleaners are fitted as standard on the DX170W-5, to blow much of the dust, dirt, insects, rain and snow out of the air intake, to ensure cleaner air is sent to the engine air filter. This extends air cleaner servicing intervals, enhancing uptime and productivity. Doosan has also added protection

merchandise exports. Over the past day, the Harper Government has announced support for the long-term success of Canadian jobs in the mining sector, including the Ring of Fire region. Three of those important announcements include: • Proposing to extend the 15 percent Mineral Exploration Tax Credit for another year. During a challenging global economy, this incentive helps keep investment in the mining industry flowing. Since 2006, it has assisted junior mining companies in raising over $5.5 billion. With the credit scheduled to expire at the end of March 2015, it is still required to help the mining industry thrive and grow; • Proposing to expand the definition of Canadian Exploration Expenses for tax purposes to include the costs associated with environmental studies and community consultations that are required to obtain a permit for grassroots exploration. This means companies can deduct these costs immediately, making it easier for them to raise capital, create jobs and contribute to the economy; and, • Significant joint investment with the Province of Ontario in First Nations’ efforts to enhance economic development and access to the ‘Ring of Fire’ region. This announcement represents our federal government’s latest meaningful contribution to helping the province enhance the economic potential of the Ring of Fire. The Government of Canada is supporting the mining sector by keeping taxes low, eliminating red

The Government is also investing in public geoscience programs such as the Geo-Mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) and the Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI) which are securing the long-term prosperity of mining and ensuring informed landuse and resource management decisions. In addition, the Government of Canada has passed the Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act, marking Canada’s contribution to global efforts aimed at enhancing the transparency of the extractive sector and helping to brand Canada as a responsible resource developer. Quick Facts • Canada is one of the largest mining nations in the world, producing more than 60 minerals and metals. • Between 2008 and 2012, the mining and select manufacturing sectors (mining and quarrying, primary metal manufacturing and non-metallic mineral product manufacturing) have contributed annually, on average, $3.84 billion in corporate taxes and royalties. • This industry contributes about $60 billion to our GDP. That’s a more than $10 billion increase over 2009. • In Economic Action Plan 2013, the Government of Canada committed $100 million over seven years to renew the GeoMapping for Energy and Minerals program to significantly advance and modernize geological knowledge in the North. • The Targeted Geoscience Initiative is a $25-million, five-year (2010– 2015) collaborative federal geoscience program that provides industry with the next generation of geoscience knowledge and innovative techniques. b

Doosan Launches New DX210W-5 Stage IV Wheeled Excavator Doosan Construction Equipment has launched the DX210W-5, a new 21 tonne Stage IV compliant wheeled excavator. As well as meeting the latest Stage IV emission regulations, the DX210W-5 goes much further and sets a new benchmark for wheeled excavator design worldwide. This achievement is marked by a distinctive new machine styling scheme that is common to all new Stage IV machines from Doosan. The new DX210W-5 offers enhanced comfort and controllability together with new features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility CoreTMS Fleet Management System as Standard In common with all Doosan Stage IV excavators above 14 tonne, the DX210W-5 is factory-installed with the new CoreTMS state-of-the-art wireless fleet monitoring system.
Designed specifically for the Doosan range, the CoreTMS system is a new tool providing comprehensive information about machine performance in a dual mode (satellite, GSM). Because the software in the CoreTMS system has been upgraded to communicate directly with the EPOS system on a Doosan excavator, it is the only tool of its type capable of providing this level of information, delivering insightful and cost-saving data about equipment to help customers work more effectively. Also available for retrofitting in a kit form, the CoreTMS system is supplied with a free 3-year subscription in new ‘W-5’ wheeled excavators and customers are provided with their own account so that they can manage the machines in their fleet using the system. Increased Power and Fuel Efficiency The new DX210W-5 ex-
cavator is powered by the well-proven 6-cylinder, turbocharged Doosan DL06P water-cooled diesel engine, which is one of the most reliable and fuel efficient ever produced by Doosan, providing an output of 141.2 kW (189 HP) at 1900 rpm, a massive 17% increase in engine power over the previous generation machine. The DL06P engine offers convenience and lower costs by meeting Stage IV emission regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies. As well as the DL06P engine, new innovative and exclusive features have been introduced that reduce fuel consumption by an average of 10%. Among these features is the new ‘Trip Meter Setting’ screen which allows operators to check fuel consump-

tion daily (or over a desired period) directly from the control panel and to save even more fuel, there is a special Doosan-developed system, Smart Power Control (SPC), which monitors both engine and pump power and limits unnecessary outputs depending on whether the work is light or heavy. The SPC can be used with all 4 work modes (E, S, P, P+). Further fuel efficiency results from the electric fan clutch on the DX210W-5 excavator which drives the cooling fan at optimum speed. Based on coolant, hydraulic oil, cooled charged air temperatures and target engine speeds, the fan speed is controlled electrically – resulting in much lower fan noise and better fuel efficiency. As well as the 17% increase in engine power, the DX210W-5 has 14% more engine torque. The new Posicon hydraulic system also offers a 3% increase in hydraulic capacity, which translates into an 8% improvement in the bucket force and 6% more arm force. The 900 kg weight increase and the greater machine width result in front lifting capacities being increased by 4 to 8% (attachment down/up), while the over the side capacities have increased by 12 to 15% (attachment down/up). Outstanding Comfort and Controllability The DX210W-5 utilises the ‘CabSus’ cab suspension system which reduces vibration by 20% and complements this with an impressive 2 dBA reduction in external noise level and a massive 4 dBA reduction in cab noise, further increasing safety and comfort for the operator.
April 2015 The DX210W-5, a new 21 tonne Stage IV compliant wheeled excavator.
The ergonomic and comfort features offered as standard in the new cab are among the best on the market and include the world exclusive Doosan jog shuttle switch; four work and four power modes; control of pressure and flow of the auxiliary lines directly from the operator’s seat; and joystick and pedal proportional control with super controllability via short and low stroke joysticks and a new system allowing usage of the two-way lines either from joystick or pedal. The operator also has the benefit of improved side visibility, a new userfriendly 7 inch FT LCD colour monitor control panel, and fully automatic climate control system, more storage compartments for paperwork and other items, as well as an improved layout with the most important switches grouped together within easy reach on the right console. The new pressurised cab incorporates sealing, air filters and increased air pressure inside to prevent dust from
getting into the cab (ISO 10263-3). The auto-idling rpm on the DX210W-5 automatically increases from 800 rpm to 1100 rpm when the temperature goes below 10 °C. This boosts the efficiency of the heating inside the cab. reinforced to reduce stress and improve durability. The outrigger frame has also been strengthened by moving to a box type assembly, with an increase in the thickness of most parts for additional strength. The dozer blade and HLink have been reinforced to increase rigidity and optimise tightening between the two structures. The height of the dozer blade has been increased along with an improved shape to facilitate pulling and mixing of materials. The size of the outrigger covers has been reduced to lessen the possibility of damage. Made from cast steel, the arm end boss and arm link boss and side plates have been combined to increase durability. Piping layouts have been redesigned to avoid interferences between hoses and pipes, decreasing pressure loss as a result. The twin tyre rubber spacer has a new symmetric design and a new tight rim connection ensures no bending and a good connection to withstand impacts from stones and other materials. To further maximise du-

Air pre-cleaners are fitted as standard on the DX210W-5, to blow much of the dust, dirt, insects, rain and snow out of the air intake, to ensure cleaner air is sent to the engine air filter. This extends air cleaner servicing intervals, enhancing uptime and productivity. Doosan has also added protection to the inner cab air filter and redesigned the cab air-conditioning filters for easier replacement. To avoid permanent engine damage, an acoustic alarm has been added to call the operator’s attention to ‘water in fuel’. If the operator ignores the signal after several alerts, the engine and pump are automatically derated. In addition, to make it easier for operators to understand the importance of warnings and to communicate the proper warning codes, pop-up menus appear with detailed information with easier to identify warnings.

box, and the fuel pump remains inside the pump compartment. The Engine Emergency Stop Switch has been relocated on the side of the seat so that it is directly accessible from ground level,
for faster access in case of emergency. Star-shaped anti-slip plates ensure that the steps stay much cleaner and more effective and to meet new EU regulations, safety bars are included as standard. b

The Positive Side Effect Of A Struggling Canadian Dollar: A Relative Jump In The Price Of Gold The shine has been off the precious metal for more than three years, dating back to its peak above $1,900 US in 2011 to its current trading range of about $1,200 an ounce. Although many analysts are predicting gold to bump upwards as much as $100 an ounce by year’s end, most of its moves so far in 2015 have been sideways, typically in $10 or $20 increments – unless you’re valuing it in Canadian currency. By that measure, gold is up at least 20 per cent in recent months – that’s over $1,500 an ounce in Canadian dollars. That’s good news for Canadian investors, and there are already indications that the relative price disparity is attracting interest from investors in the mining and mineral exploration sectors. That’s welcome news for those junior mining companies that are determined to work through the current investment slowdown,
scrambling for money to fund mineral exploration and assembling properties in preparation for the eventual turnaround. “The implication is that compared to any other currency around, gold has had a big increase in price. Does that mean it has increased in value or is it just a nominal thing? If you’re mining gold in Canada or Australia or Ghana, the gold price now is looking very strong,” suggested Lawrence Roulston, President of Vancouver-based Quintana Resources Capital. Quintana is a Houstonbased family-run company that focuses on investing in the junior mining market. Roulston said that while many investors continue to sit on the sidelines, others, particularly in the U.S., regard recent struggles in the global mining sector as an opportunity to buy. Quintana, he said, has assembled a group of industry
professionals in Vancouver who are “working toward deploying a pretty substantial amount of money.” “It’s cheaper for Americans to come into Canadian markets right now and buy shares. I can tell you anecdotally that there’s a lot of money in the U.S. right now that’s looking to get into the mining industry,” Roulston said. “From the beginning of October until (mid-February), the amount of new money coming into the junior mining sector was $3.5 billion.” “I’m talking about closed deals, not those where someone is hoping to raise money, but deals where a cheque has cleared the bank. And that’s just juniors. Equity was $1.7 of that, $1.8 was debt. The $1.7 of new equity went to 130 different companies. That’s worldwide – but two thirds of it is Canadabased, TSX or TSX-V listed companies.”

Gold is up at least 20 per cent in recent months – that’s over $1,500 an ounce in Canadian dollars.
Investors aren’t the only ones seeking opportunities in the sector, Roulston added. “There have been around 14 takeovers since the beginning of October 2014, so the majors are definitely moving, and the mid-tiers.” One of the most prominent moves is Goldcorp’s $526 million friendly takeover offer in January 2015 for Probe Mines, owner of the Borden Lake gold project near Chapleau, Ontario, a deal that valued Probe shares at a 49 per cent premium to market price. Roulston said it was a bit surprising to see Goldcorp lay out more than half a billion dollars in a premium offer for a gold project that’s in a relatively early stage – but it reflects growing interest in Canadian mining opportunities. He noted there was similar talk about the half-billion dollars Goldcorp paid in 2006 in an all-stock deal to acquire the Eleonore deposit in northern Quebec, “and that’s now going to be a spectacular mine.” The Borden Lake area was relatively underexplored until the Probe discovery, despite being surrounded by one of the world’s largest accumulations of gold deposits – including the Timmins, Hemlo and Wawa camps. Now, it’s an attractive area for junior companies such as Kapuskasing Gold (TSX.V: KAP), which has assembled six sets of gold exploration properties, each with its own geological targets, which flank the Probe property on all sides. Ground samples from two of the properties, Rollo and Borden North, provided assay results up to 7.69
grams of gold per tonne. Three separate gold occurrences were tested, including one new discovery zone. All of the company’s properties share with Borden Lake a common geologic theme – they’re in the Kapuskasing Structural Zone, a geological fault where the continental plates are still pushing up rock. The company boasts a very successful, expert team of prospectors and geologists who are anxious to discover what other opportunities may be hidden there. Mike Tremblay, a cowinner of Ontario Prospectors Association Award in 2013 for the Borden discovery, is prospector and head of Kapuskasing’s advisory board. Tremblay, who grew up in Chapleau, first theorized and staked prospective ground in the Kapuskasing Structural Zone in the late 1980s and he continues to “bang rock” in the area. “In the Kapuskasing Structural Zone, where the Borden deposit is, there
is really only a minute amount of work ever done. Our company has Bordentype targets in unexplored territory where we have similar rock types. So it’s a similar geological setting without any work ever being done on it,” Tremblay said. “Even now, Kapuskasing has barely scratched the surface of its properties,” he said. “Once we get our funding together the first thing we want to do on the Kapuskasing targets – the Borden-type targets – is to fly a good airborne (magnetic/electromagnetic) survey so we have a base to work from.” “We’re basically following what Probe did, fly a good airborne survey and then go hit it on the ground with grassroots prospecting, banging rock, and then in a relatively quick timeframe get to the drilling stage as soon as we generate targets.” Dean Nawata, Kapuskasing Gold president and CEO, said he believes there is “an Continued on page 12

Page 11 Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission, Mack Trucks announced that the mDRIVE HD is now available and standard in the Titan by Mack model. “We built on the success of the Mack mDRIVE, previously only available on our highway models, and engineered a heavier-duty version of the automated manual transmission, resulting in the mDRIVE HD, standard on the Mack Granite and now standard on the Titan,” said Stephen Roy, President of Mack Trucks North America. “When paired with the powerful heavy-haul Titan, it offers Mack customers unparalleled muscle to easily handle the most difficult of loads.” The mDRIVE HD offers improved performance for demanding on- and off-road applications. The mDRIVE HD in the Titan is compatible up to 2,060 lb.-ft. of torque, 515 to 605 hp and integrates seamlessly with the powerful Mack MP10 engine. Featuring specialized heavyhaul software for GCWs heavier than 140,000 lbs., the mDRIVE HD in the Titan easily manages applications such as logging, lowboy and oversized hauling. The 12-speed mDRIVE HD features an automated clutch, so no clutch pedal is needed. The mDRIVE HD is controlled through a dash-mounted shift pad, enabling the driver to select drive, neutral or reverse. For more demanding jobsite conditions, the shift pad can be operated manually to hold a gear, downshift or upshift. The mDRIVE HD in the Titan model monitors changes in grade (both up and down), vehicle speed, throttle position, acceleration, torque demand and gross vehicle weight. It automatically chooses the best gear for the road condition, allowing drivers to focus on the terrain rather than shifting gears, increasing safety on worksites. The mDRIVE HD is serviceable at Mack’s coast-tocoast dealer network. Other features of the mDRIVE HD in the Titan include: • The mDRIVE HD is lightweight. Including transmission oil, the mDRIVE HD is more than 200 pounds lighter than other transmission offerings, Continued on page 12

advantage to building up a company when the market is in the tank and nobody else is looking.” “We approached Mike with the idea, ‘Why don’t we build a company based on you?’” Nawata recalled. “This whole thing was put together by four professional geologists picking and choosing what they really want geologically, specifically staking a large land position in six general areas with 10 claim packages all around the Probe discovery. Each of these packages happened to be available to Kapuskasing Gold. They were all chosen for specific geological reasons.” “Rather than a claim staking closeology play, it really has been built from the ground up by contemporary, successful geologists putting together a regional exploration play – partially validated by Probe’s discovery.” In addition to Tremblay, the company boasts

four professional geologists with a combined 110 years of experience in mineral exploration, property acquisition and mine development, including: Robert Duess, who was a key figure in early development of the West Timmins area; Darin Wagner, former President and CEO of West Timmins Mining; Wayne Reid who was instrumental in discovery of gold deposits in the Yukon and central Newfoundland; and Brian Atkinson who was previously the Ontario Geological Survey’s regional resident geologist for Timmins and Red Lake. “I think one of our advantages, over and above the fact that we have an expert group that knows this area, is that we were able to put this whole thing together because the junior markets are in bad shape,” Nawata said. “We had the time and the expertise to pick and choose what we wanted as a whole regional play, a regional exploration company.”
Wagner said there has been an “evolution of the thinking” about the geology of the area around Borden and the Kapuskasing Structural Zone. “When Robert Duess and I were working in the Timmins area there was a belief that there wasn’t anything of significance in the west end of the Timmins camp. Our work proved that to be dead
wrong.” “We think there’s a significantly underappreciated opportunity out there and it really does start at that grassroots prospecting level. I think that’s what attracted us to that area – the opportunity exists to do well, fundamentally sound prospecting and geological work and find something in the heartland in Canada,” Wagner added. b
