Feds To Introduce e-Logs And Electronic Stability Control For Trucks GOT A BEAST OF A JOB?

The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) says officials from Transport Minister Marc Garneau’s office have confirmed media reports suggesting the new federal government is moving forward to replace current requirements for truck drivers to complete paper log books with a mandate that trucks be equipped with Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) as the standard mechanism for monitoring, auditing and enforcing compliance with national hours of service regulations. In addition, it was confirmed that a new manufacturing standard will be introduced to require that all new heavy trucks sold in Canada be equipped with an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. CTA, which is a federation of the provincial trucking associations which represents over 4,500 trucking companies nationally, welcomes confirmation of both initiatives.

TAKE REFUGE IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE. Bobcat® pressurized cabs provide a best-in-class seal. Dust and dirt can’t get in, and you get a comfortable victory every time.

benefits in terms of safety and administration of both measures outweigh the costs for both the trucking industry and for government. While Transport Canada cannot give a firm date for introduction of the regulations at this time, it is expected to align implementation as closely as possible to the timetable for similar measures in the U.S.– late 2017 or early 2018. Now that it has the commitment of the federal government, the industry is calling upon the provinces to implement an identical ELD mandate for those trucking operations that come under provincial jurisdiction, says Bradley. Under the Canadian constitution the federal government has jurisdiction over extra-provincial trucking operations (i.e., those that cross provincial and/or international borders) while the provincial governments are responsible for intra-provincial trucking operations (those that operate solely within a province). b

“We have been advocating for both of these key safety measures for over a decade now,” says CTA president, David Bradley. “We know that Transport Canada has been working on both issues but with a new government in charge we needed to confirm the commitment is moving forward at the political level. I am satisfied that commitment is in place.” ELDs are devices used to track, collect and record data on a truck driver’s hours of service. The federal hours of service regulation, which is designed to combat driver fatigue, is arguably the most important element of the National Safety Code for Trucks. ESC systems help protect against truck rollovers and other loss of control incidents by automatically engaging the engine retarder and applying a truck’s brakes even before the driver is aware of the need for increased stability. Several years in the making and designed with direct customer feedback, John Deere is introducing four Final Tier 4 GSeries skid steers (312GR, 314G, 316GR, 318G) and one compact track loader (317G). These new machines were designed to level the playing field for today’s rental, ag material handling, construction and landscape customers. The five models, including three vertical and two radial-lift options, boast big reliability and serviceability, and are full of customerrequested features aimed at improving operator and machine productivity, and uptime, and lowering daily operating costs. “With the addition of these new G-Series models, John Deere now offers a full line of skid steers and compact track loaders to meet the quality, performance and price point needs of today’s customer,” said Gregg Zupancic,

product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “Customer input led to increased durability, higher engine power, improved fuel capacity and updated cab and productivity features, so when customers buy or rent a John Deere G-Series machine, it isn’t just an easy decision, it’s one they can make with total confidence.” The G-Series machines feature an improvement in horsepower-to-weight ratios and an optimized boom design that enables lift heights over 10 feet on the vertical lift models and a 20 percent increase in breakout forces on the radial-lift models. With the option of a radial or vertical lift, customers can now choose the Deere system that best fits their application needs. The new vertical-lift design on the 314G (51 hp), 318G (65 hp) and 317G (65 hp) provides excellent allaround visibility with clear

sight lines both above and below the boom to enable easier grading in tight spaces, plus the low-profile rear-hood design expands rear views. The radial-lift option used on the 312GR (51 hp) and 316GR (61 hp) offers an exclusive one-person boom lockout system for safety that can be activated from within the cab. The lift system is designed for lower maintenance and optimal digging performance, and is ideal when more reach is needed at midrange lift heights — such as dumping over a foundation wall, backfilling or loading a flatbed trailer. These machines are also ideal for work in small areas or indoor operations. The 316GR, 318G and 317G offer 24 percent more engine power and all GSeries machines provide 11 percent additional fuel capacity over previous models for daylong productivity and uptime. A durable, high-performance Yanmar

The radial-lift option is designed for lower maintenance and optimal digging performance, and is ideal at midrange lift heights.

Final Tier 4 engine and hydraulic powertrain provide maximum pushing power, and boom and bucket productivity. The optimized power-to-weight ratio also helps deliver more usable power, resulting in faster cycle times on the job site. John Deere designed an all-new operator station for the G-Series, featuring many of the same comfort, space and visibility refinements originally introduced on the E-Series machines.

A swing-out cab door creates a wide-open entryway and flat floors allow easier entry and exit, along with more foot and legroom. The cabs and floors are sealed and pressurized to keep out dust and excess noise, and a footwell cleanout makes debris management easier than ever, minimizing costly maintenance and downtime. Peterbilt Installs Its First Production PACCAR MX-11 Engine

April 2016 the only commercial diesel engines to use Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) in both the engine block and cylinder head. CGI is approximately 20 percent lighter and 75 percent stronger than traditional gray iron. The PACCAR MX-11 engine is designed to achieve an industry-leading B10 life of one million miles. It also utilizes a common rail fuel system with injection pressures of 2,500 bar to optimize combustion for low fuel consumption and noise levels. Peterbilt’s Model 567 SFFA lets customers maximize payloads while helping meet state and federal bridge law requirements with a chassis that optimizes weight distribution. It is the industry’s newest heavy-duty vocational truck and features modern, distinctive styling. “A main reason we selected the Peterbilt Model 567 SFFA is it’s the newest, most up-to-date set-forward front axle available,” said Hammond. “It has the advanced features to enhance our operations and I’m sure it will be a favorite with our drivers.” It is available in both 115- and 121-inch BBC lengths. The 115-inch BBC has a bumper to front axle distance of 29 inches and the 121-inch BBC has a bumper to front axle distance of 31 inches. Peterbilt also offers the Model 567 in a set-back front axle configuration, also available in a 115- or 121-inch BBC length. b

Peterbilt’s first lightweight, fuel efficient PACCAR MX-11 engine was installed recently in the company’s newest vocational truck, the Model 567 in a set-forward front axle configuration. The historic truck-and-engine combination was presented to Knife River, who drove it off the assembly line at Peterbilt’s Denton, Texas manufacturing facility. “The PACCAR MX-11 will bring new levels of performance, durability, reliability and overall return for customers. It is lightweight and fuel efficient, making it an ideal power choice for customers in a wide range of applications, including regional haul, tanker, bulk haul, construction and refuse,” said Robert Woodall, Peterbilt Assistant General Manager of Sales and Marketing. “We’re pleased to present Peterbilt’s first production PACCAR MX-11 engine to a valued customer such as Knife River.” The truck will be used in Knife River’s mixer operations throughout the Northwest U.S. “It was a great experience to tour Peterbilt’s plant. It was obvious employees took pride in the product they were building, and watching the state-of-the-art assembly processes and attention to quality gave us an even

greater appreciation for Peterbilt,” said Scott Hammond, Knife River’s Northwest Region Equipment Manager. “We’re anxious to put the MX-11 and Model 567 to work.” Joining Hammond at the presentation were Randy Kephart, Knife River’s Equipment Manager at its Coos Bay (Ore.) and Roseburg (Ore.) locations, and Colin Milligan, Shop Manager. Knife River was founded in 1917 and is based in Bismarck, N.D. They are a full-service civil and residential contractor operating in 19 states. In addition to its contracting services, Knife River is one of the U.S.’s largest aggregate producers and supplies high-quality asphalt, readymix concrete and other construction materials. The Model 567 SFFA they were presented today is one of 200 Peterbilt trucks the company has ordered. The 10.8-liter PACCAR MX-11 engine became available for order through Peterbilt dealerships in November and production began this week. It has an output of up to 430 horsepower and 1,550 lb.-ft. of torque. The PACCAR MX-11 engine has six inline cylinders and a double overhead camshaft design. PACCAR MX engines are Source: Peterbilt

The leading heavyduty truck manufacturer honoured six cities in 2015; Freightliner Trucks launched the Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities recognition program to honour cities spearheading community growth and innovation. The program came after an economic data review revealed a compelling relationship between severe duty trucks and its operators, and thriving economies. After a successful first year for the program, Freightliner has announced the program will continue with more cities being honoured in 2016. The list of new cities, along with a recap of the 2015 program, was shared at the World of Concrete tradeshow in Las Vegas during a reception in Freightliner’s booth. “It might seem a little unexpected for a truck manufacturer to create a recognition program like Hardest Working Cities, but it’s clear that vibrant,

local economies need severe duty trucks for essential jobs such as building highways, delivering construction materials, plowing snow or hauling refuse. Hard work matters and it should be celebrated,” said Allan Haggai, marketing communications manager, Freightliner Trucks. “We think it’s important to acknowledge cities and workers using products like ours to positively impact their communities.” Since the launch of the program, six cities have been awarded the Hardest Working Cities title: Indianapolis, Salt Lake City, Nashville, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Dallas. As part of the recognition, Freightliner Trucks hosted an award presentation where elected officials and business leaders accepted the award in each winning city Additionally, Freightliner identified city work sites and coordinated surprise gift and food deliveries to thank workers for their Source: Daimler

To date, Freightliner Trucks has visited 12 work sites and thanked about 800 workers across six cities. “This is not only a great occasion for the Freightliner Trucks family to celebrate what our company stands for, but a chance to honour those who work hard while building strong communities,” said Mary Aufdemberg, director of product marketing, Freightliner Trucks. “Whether you are operating a truck, maintaining it, or building it, our industry is an amazing place to develop a career.” To find the Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities, approximately 400 metropolitan census areas in the United States and Canada in 11 different data categories were reviewed. The data categories ranged from impact on overall gross domestic product to growth in employment to the number of jobs in key industry sectors including construction, manufacturing and logistics. b

The Canadian Trucking Alliance today released a whitepaper recommending a Made-in-Canada, SMART approach toward implementing the proposed Phase II GHG Reduction Standards and fuel efficiency regulations for heavy trucks and – for the first time – trailers. The Phase I standards which were introduced in 2013 covered tractors and engines from model years 2014 to 2018. Phase II, will encompass the entire vehicle – tractor, engine and trailer. CTA contends the Canadian trucking industry is known worldwide as a leader in fuel economy/ GHG reduction. “At no time in our industry’s history have carriers’ economic goals been more aligned with society’s desires in terms of carbon emissions reduction than they are today,” says CTA president David Bradley. “Even with current lower prices, fuel is the second largest operating cost for truck fleets so it is in the industry’s interest to improve fuel economy while also further reducing its carbon footprint.” But while CTA is onside with the aims of the Phase II regulation, it states that

leading coverage ensures a more reliable guidance signal and sub-inch accuracy for the most precise farming practices. • Two-way file transfer: Producers can easily transport AFS data such as yield maps, prescriptions or guidance lines wirelessly to their home office or trusted advisor. AFS Connect offers a comprehensive suite of fleet management and machine monitoring that provide long-distance, realtime control. From yield mapping to machine performance data and custom alerts, AFS Connect gives producers on-the-go access to every machine in their fleet. The free AFS Connect program is eligible with other programs. For complete program details, visit your Case IH AFS dealer orcaseih.com/freeAFS. b

operators instant access to real-time data, helping them manage their entire fleet from a remote location. With instant access to location, diagnostics, fuel and engine stats, they’ll be armed with valuable decision-making tools to help increase efficiency and turn potential into profit.” Producers who participate in the free AFS Connect program also can add one of these new features to their subscription: • Cellular Guidance (NTRIP): Tapping into CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile) networks, producers gain access to 180 carriers across North America. the Canada Gazette Part 1 Notice, the department’s approach will be “Consistent with the approach taken with current regulations for GHG emissions from heavy-duty vehicles and engines.” “Simply taking the US rule and imposing it on the Canadian fleet would be at odds with the goal of reducing GHG emissions from the sector and would undercut Canada’s superior productivity and environmental advantages developed over the past 40 years,” says Bradley. “It would force equipment on Canadian carriers that is potentially either unsuitable or untested for Canadian conditions and which could expose Canadian drivers to unsafe situations.” b

Environment Canada this time around cannot – as it has done in the past and which it has indicated it is planning to do again — simply adopt whatever the US Environmental Protection Agency decides to introduce to the US fleet. In the whitepaper, CTA argues the US fleet is standardized around one configuration whereas in Canada a vast array of much more productive, efficient and innovative multi-axle configurations, trailer body styles, and higher allowable weights are allowed. When payload is considered, the Canadian fleet is 22 per cent more fuel efficient and produces 22 per Source: CTA cent less GHGs than the US fleet. In addition, Canadian operating conditions – the climate, topography, distances – are very different than in most parts of the United States and require equipment and technologies that have been tested and certified for use in this country. The EPA considered none of this in developing its proposed Phase II rules which were introduced last year. To date, the only official word from Environment Canada is that it intends to follow the US lead once again. According to

to the entire toolbar, we redesigned every inch of the new Early Riser planter,” explained Tony McClelland, Case IH planter marketing manager. “It was all based on direct customer feedback and field-testing. We made sure that this new planter is not only extremely accurate, it’s also robust enough to deliver precise placement across all terrains, crop types and speeds for faster, more uniform emergence.” Announced in November 2015, the new 2000 series Early Riser planter is the first to factory-integrate industry-leading seed placement technologies from Precision Planting into a completely new system featuring a best-inclass, all-new, rugged row unit. Designed for modern seed types, treatments, populations and conditions, the new planter can be easily customized to a range of soil types, terrain, fertilizer/chemical application needs and varying crop residue management practices. Plus, a streamlined design and tool-free crop changes and adjustments result in simpler maintenance. Four Levels of Planter Technology for 2016 Case IH also detailed a four-tier planter offering for

a variety of farm operations at the event. This offering features four levels, ranging in price, customization and factory-readiness — the highest tier being the new 2000 series. “The Early Riser planter family set the agronomic standard by providing the industry’s only flat-bottom seed trench, leading to earlier, more uniform emergence and higher yields,” said McClelland. “Building on this legacy, we’re excited to give producers the opportunity to work with their trusted Case IH dealers to customize their existing, new or future planter with the right amount of technology to meet their needs.” Retaining the agronomic value of the Early Riser planter series, each unique offering ensures consistent in-row spacing, accurate depth control, uniform soil density and good seed-tosoil contact. As the first planter series built with factory-integrated Precision Planting technology, the new 2000 series Early Riser planter allows producers to customize their planter — direct from the factory. Built with heavy-duty cast components, the 2000 series stands up to high speeds and tough, fast-changing conditions. A 26-inch toolbar clearance, plus a 60 percent increase in vertical row-unit travel, helps accommodate uneven terrain without sacrificing accurate seed depth and consistent closing — even at speeds up to 10 miles per hour.

April 2016

Developed specifically for the 2000 series, the all-new vSet 2 meter and vDrive electric drive deliver accurate and consistent seed singulation, populations and in-row spacing for a variety of crop types. This new metering system, combined with DeltaForce hydraulic down force and row-byrow shut-offs for seed, liquid fertilizer and chemical, allows each row unit to react individually to changing conditions for better seed placement. Additional new features that can be customized from the factory include the Advanced Seed Delivery (ASD) system for the most accurate seed delivery and placement from the meter to the furrow. First models, including 12-, 16- and 24-row 30-inch front-fold machines, will be available for the 2017 planting season. “Of course, not everyone is in an operation that requires the ultimate in cutting-edge planting technology,” added McClelland. “But every operation can benefit from some level of technological improvement in planting accuracy. That’s why we’ve outlined three other alternatives for 2016.” Case IH continues to offer an industry-exclusive deduct on certain components to producers who order certain 1200 series Early Riser planter models with Precision Planting technology. Built with less mechanical components, their new planter will arrive at the dealer-

ship ready to accept the technology they desire. This includes the vDrive with vSet electric meterdrive system for optimal seed placement and accuracy, in-cab adjustable CleanSweep residue managers and DeltaForce hydraulic down force for uniform depth across varying soil conditions. The Advanced Seed Metering (ASM) technology on the 1200 series Early Riser planter set the industry benchmark for consistent in row spacing and plant population accuracy. Proven on operations across the country, this system allows producers to plant a wide variety of seed types and sizes at high plant populations. The 1200 series features many other Agronomic Design advantages, including the two-stage closing system, furrow firming point, seed protection shoe and exclusive pulled gauge wheels. Case IH dealers are offering exceptional deals on these models. Through unprecedented discounts and special interest-waiver programs, producers can upgrade to the technology they desire on certain used latemodel Early Riser planters through participating Case IH dealerships. If producers wish to modify these models with Precision Planting components, their Case IH dealer is uniquely suited to modify existing models to the level that’s best for their farm. b Source: Case IH

With the new 735 of the current E-Series, Sennebogen presents the next generation of mobile timber handling machines. The pick & carry machine boasts compact dimensions, a robust design, and optimal consumption values. As pick & carry machines, the timber handling machines from Sennebogen have long impressed numerous customers around the world. In this regard, the Sennebogen 735, which first came onto the market in 2005, has been a tried and trusted success story for many years. The current ESeries seamlessly extends this success with the new generation. Equipped with a diesel engine complying with the Tier 4f emissions standard, a newly designed robust mobile undercarriage, and particularly low consumption values, the 735 uniformly impresses operators and the persons responsible for machinery. As a genuine timber handling machine, the Sennebogen 735 is at home in the sawmill and in the log sorting yard. This is where above all the pick & carry concept reveals its strengths. Whether the task at hand is removing

rear ballast can be significantly reduced in dimensions and weight. The 735 can even be deployed with confidence on demanding terrain, on inclines and on a difficult substrate. The two powerful travel drives with two speed levels accelerate the machine up to 20 km/h. With wide twin tires and a supplemental support plate, the machine is stable in every position and can even pull two trailers up to 30 t. Optimized engine control, the proven EcoMode, and well-designed air control ensure consumption values that are quite respectable. In direct comparison with the predecessor series, a reduction of up to 25% could be achieved. Initial test implementations under realistic conditions confirmed the low consumption, which currently no competitor has achieved. For the operator, the 1.0 m rigidly elevated, comfortable Maxcab offers an ideal overview of the equipment and work area. An extensive lighting package with surrounding cameras that offer the operator additional support during work. Equipment features, such as the standard direction of travel reversal and the Sencon control system with intuitive operation, offer the operator comfortable working conditions. b

logs along the sorting line or sorting and manipulating the selection for further processing, the machine is ideally equipped for a variety of tasks. Equipped with a powerful 224 kW diesel engine, two-stage all-wheel travel drive, and an 11.3 m equipment length, the 735 is available to end users via the sales partner network effective immediately. Thanks to compact dimensions of 3.68 m in width and a rear radius of 2.93 m, the machine can even move safely into narrow alleys. Thus logs can be conveniently manipulated to a height of approximately 10 m. Thanks to the 360° infinitely rotating uppercarriage; the machine can always be moved out forwards again, eliminating the need for complex maneuvering. This also makes it significantly easier to unload trucks. The new Sennebogen 735 has been specially designed for the requirements of mobile timber handling. An articulated boom behind the center of the machine ensures ideal weight distribution. In travel operation, the machine’s center of gravity is always centrally positioned over the slewing ring; as a result, the Source: Sennebogen

New I-Shift With Crawler Gears Can Start Off From Standstill With 325 Tonnes Volvo Trucks is launching a new member of the I-Shift family: I-Shift with crawler gears. The new gears, which are added to the automated transmission, provide exceptional start-ability for trucks carrying heavy loads in demanding situations. The system is entirely unique for series-produced heavy trucks. Volvo Trucks’ new version of I-Shift makes it possible to add up to two new crawler gears. This means, among other things, that the truck can move off from standstill and transport a gross combination weight (GCW) of up to 325 tonnes. “I-Shift with crawler gears offers an entirely new scope for heavy trucks with automated transmission to regulate their speed when crawling slowly and reversing. The driver can haul a heavy load without worrying about getting into situations that may lead to costly standstills,” says Peter Hardin, Product Manager FM and FMX, Volvo Trucks.

With the new crawler gears, the truck can drive at speeds as low as 0.52 km/h. This helps immensely during precision manoeuvres such as in construction and maintenance tasks. “The vastly improved driveability and start-ability with the new crawler gears makes the driver’s job far easier when operating in difficult terrain on slippery surfaces with heavy loads, such as at construction sites, in mines or in forests,” explains Peter Hardin. For haulage firms carrying out heavy transport operations on demanding surfaces as well as regular highway driving, crawler gears also offer considerable flexibility and the possibility of improved fuel economy. “I-Shift with crawler gears makes it possible to start off from standstill in extreme situations. Combining them with a suitable rear axle ratio that optimises engine revs at high speeds results in lower fuel consumption on the high-

Larson Electronics Releases A Portable Step Down Spider Box Larson Electronics, a leading manufacturer and supplier of industrial lighting equipment, has announced the release of a weatherproof portable spider box that allows operators to plug in to 240 volt generators to operate 120 volt equipment. The WALSB-240.50A6X120.20A-WP portable spider box from Larson Electronics is built to provide operators with a reliable source of 120 volt power when only 240 volts is readily available. A ten foot chemical and abrasion resistant cable terminated in an industrial male cord cap car-

steel and is powder coated with a glossy blue finish for corrosion resistance and aesthetics. A convenient carrying handle is located at the top of the unit, which also doubles for cable management when not in use. This spider box is ideal for powering 120 volt equipment on construction sites, in the entertainment industry, and other job sites where 240 volt generators supply the power. “This new compact spider box is built for portability and convenience as well as durability,” said Rob Bresnahan, CEO of Larson Electronics. “This power distribution system is constructed with a carrying handle that can be easily used as a cord wrap for storing and transporting.” b

ries the 240 volt current to the box, which is then stepped down to 120 volts to operate equipment. This compact spider box features six duplex 120 volt outlets that provide a sealed and secure connection for up to twelve devices. Each receptacle features a hinged watertight cover protecting the face from rain, water, and moisture when not in use. The spider box has short circuit and overload protection, causing the unit to automatically shut down to protect it from damage if an overload occurs. Built on proven Agronomic Design principles, this rugged addition to the industry-leading Case IH vertical tillage line-up quickly cuts, incorporates and evenly distributes the most stubborn crop residue up to 4 inches deep. This creates the potential for a blacker surface finish and an increase in nutrient cycling for the next crop. “We developed the new True-Tandem 335 Barracuda to help producers more productively manage the record-breaking amounts of residue associated with new, high-yielding crop genetics — especially hybrids developed for standability with tougher stalks,” said Chris Lursen, Case IH tillage marketing manager. “Thanks to the industryexclusive serrated blades engineered with Earth Metal and greater concavity than most other vertical tillage blades on the market, the Barracuda easily slices through tough residue, uproots root balls and levels out the soil to create the ideal environment for residue breakdown and seedling development.” Capable of cutting up to 4 inches deep, the new

producer using a 34-foot machine can cover 28 acres per hour.1 • The 22-inch, crimp centre Earth Metal Barracuda blades are engineered using a unique process and steel formula to prevent brittleness and elasticity, making blades stronger and more durable. • An 18-degree gang angle matched to each blade’s shallow concavity that provides thorough soil mixing without causing backside blade compaction like competitive designs. • Front and rear gangs and blades are properly indexed to one another, providing an even surface finish and a more even subsurface floor than most other vertical tillage tools and highspeed disks. • The hydraulically adjustable TigerPaw Crumbler rolling reel, which helps produce more uniform clod sizing, soil particle stratification and residue distribution. • The ability to retrofit the Barracuda blade to Case IH True-Tandem 330 Turbo or 335VT models. The True-Tandem 335 Barracuda is available in working widths from 22 to 34 feet to match most tractors. Whether spring or fall, producers can use the unit alone or in combination with other tillage operations to achieve soil conditions for uniform crop emergence. b

22-inch Earth Metal® Barracuda blades help producers reach deeper depths and achieve a smooth field finish, while covering acres quickly. The blades penetrate hard, dry soils and break through surface compaction layers to promote soil movement and uniform density. New chiseltipped serrations allow the blades to retain sharpness and durability, even under tough field conditions. “As the chisel-tipped teeth wear, the valley between each tip stays sharp, retaining the cutting edge and extending the blade’s lifetime,” said Lursen. “Combined with the highquality Earth Metal material, the blades are built for durability, helping producers cover rocky terrain and uneven ground in confidence — even at high speeds.” Built with the toughness producers demand, the True-Tandem 335 Barracuda vertical tillage tool works on a wide range of soils to quickly break down even the heaviest stubble and stalks. Additional features that ramp up the aggressiveness of the new True-Tandem 335 Barracuda include: Capability to run at 6 to 9 miles per hour for higher speed, higher productivity soil management. Operating at 8 miles per hour, a Source: Case IH

Strong Lift Chart Saves Anthony Crane’s Client Money Companies working on new construction projects often have several crane model options when it comes to a lifting project. Spaces tend to be less congested, allowing larger cranes to be easily maneuvered into location and quickly repositioned around the site to pick and place materials. A variety of options – swing-away and luffing jibs, full counterweights and boom inserts – can be added to the crane with relative ease to meet configuration requirements. It’s during maintenance lifts on existing structures in congested downtown settings in major metropolitan areas when crane options narrow and the

expertise and deep equipment fleet of a lifting company pays dividends. Add to the mix the challenge of not being able to lift over areas occupied by recovering patients, and you have the recent project successfully and efficiently completed by the Dravosburg, PA, branch of Anthony Crane USA by using its new Terex® AC 250-1 all terrain crane. Paging Dr. Anthony Anthony Crane was brought in to support Pittsburgh’s power and industrial contractor, McKamish Inc., to remove old HVAC units from the rooftop of the Allegheny General Hospital. “The building was 157-ft (47.9-m) tall, and we had to reach 40 ft

(12.2-m) over the rooftop,” mentions Ron Shearer, Account Manager/Crane Specialist at Anthony Crane. “There were a number of picks to be made, of which the heaviest weighed approximately 15,000 lb (6.8 tonnes).” Typically Anthony Crane would enlist a high capacity all terrain crane with a luffing jib and full counterweight due to the height of the building and the radius required to perform the lifts. However, this was neither a typical job nor typical circumstances. Work area confinements did not allow the assembly of the luffing jib for the crane, so only the main boom could be used. “The crane had to be

set up in a loading zone to eliminate lifting over the occupied portions of the hospital,” explains Andrew Longacre, GSP, of Anthony Crane. “The work area was extremely small and there was a sky bridge we had to work around that did not allow assembly of inserts or luffing jib.” The crane was required to work at a radius that would allow the boom to raise straight up and over the building without hitting the skybridge to make the HVAC equipment lifts and load the old pieces onto trucks. “The only way to accomplish the lift was to use a crane that gave us a powerful main boom and capacity with just the main stack of counterweights, so it could fit in an area with minimal swing room,” adds Shearer. In his mind there was only one crane model that would fit the bill. Terex AC 250-1 the Right Prescription Recently added to Anthony Cane’s fleet, the Terex AC 250-1 all terrain crane gave them the combination of power, main boom length and compact carrier size to efficiently handle the picks at Allegheny General Hospital. “The AC 250-1 crane is one of the most compact six-axle cranes on the market and offers the most compact outrigger base and tail radius work area in its class,” says David Naab, Regional Business Manager for Terex Cranes. “Yet it has a 262-ft (80-m) main boom, which is exactly what Anthony Crane needed for this project.” Because Shearer had the new 300-US-ton (250-tonne) capacity class crane at his disposal, this eliminated the additional time and expense of supporting equipment for a

April 2016

larger crane. Crew members did not need an assist crane to assemble and disassemble a luffing jib on site or the extra truck loads for jib transport. Additionally the extra manpower requirement for assembly/disassembly of the jib wasn’t needed. “By using the AC 250-1 crane with only the main boom, we easily saved more than $12,000 compared to using a crane with a jib.” The strength of this Terex crane’s load chart also saved on the counterweight configuration for this project. The height of the building required the AC 250-1 crane’s center pin to be 60 ft (18.3 m) off of the building. The operator used the full 262.5 ft (80 m) of main boom to reach the 40 ft (12.2 m) onto the building’s roof to hoist the HVAC units and components away. This required an operating radius of more than 100 ft (30.5 m). Knowing the heaviest piece to be lifted weighed 15,000 lb (6,8 tonnes), Shearer prepared the amount of counterweight required for all the lifts. According to Naab, “The AC 250-1 crane offers a 16,200-lb (7.3-tonne) rated capacity when working at a 120-ft (36.6-m) radius with only 115,300 lb (52.3 tonnes) of counterweight.” Shearer adds, “This allowed us to use only the main stack and not the winged weights to reduce the required swing room. Additionally, it saved us 4 loads and approximately $4000 in shipping costs to and from the site.” Only the Terex AC 2501 crane and 4 truckloads of counterweight and supporting equipment made the short 13-mi (20.2-km) trip from its Dravosburg

yard to the hospital’s downtown Pittsburgh location. Once on site, the operator took advantage of the crane’s all-wheel steering to maneuver it into the cramped loading zone staging area. “The crane offers several steering options, including off-wall, all-wheel and crab to efficiently maneuver into tight spaces,” offers Naab. In less than two hours the crane was rigged and ready for the lifts. In a matter of a few hours, the HVAC units and supporting components were picked from the roof and placed onto trucks for transport. “We had to carefully lift the units over the sky bridge to set the old units on the trucks,” adds Longacre. While the weight and size of the pieces posed little challenge for Anthony Crane, the location of the lift certainly did. Having the combination of compact size, long boom and strong load chart of the Terex AC 250-1 crane helped the company to safely, efficiently and cost-effectively handle the job. “Where other models would’ve required inserts and/or a swing away jib, we were able to complete this job with only the main boom of the AC 250-1 crane,” mentions Mr. Ray G. Anthony, President & CEO. “This was the best option both operationally and economically for us and the customer. We also sincerely appreciated the full support of the Terex sales and maintenance teams, as they spent countless hours with our operator and technicians to review every part of the crane and were present for the first series of jobs.” b Source: Terex

Governments Support Local Fruit And Vegetable Puree-Processing Company The governments of Canada and Manitoba will invest more than $582,000 in unique, state-of-theart equipment so a local company can transform Manitoba-grown produce into nutritious and flavorful purees, Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced today. Canadian Prairie Garden Puree Products Inc. have acquired new equipment and modified their existing operation in order to cook more types of fruits, vegetables and pulse crops like chickpeas, navy beans and lentils, then rapidly chill and package the pureed products into sterile pouches. They are the only company in the world with this technology, which is more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly than traditional processing methods. The technology also ensures the purees retain better colour, flavour, texture and nutritional benefits without any preservatives or additives. Minister Kostyshyn noted this investment also supports the Manitoba gov-

ernment’s goal of creating a $5.5 billion food processing industry by 2022, which is currently at $4.95 billion. The company’s expansion, allows them to purchase millions of tonnes of culled vegetables that might otherwise be sent to a landfill or sold at a lower price for animal feed. In five years, the company plans to expand from nine employees to nearly 60. The company, located at the Food Development Centre in Portage la Prairie, has received several awards in 2015 for their products including for Best New Product at the Manitoba Food Processors Association’s awards and a “NEXTY” award at the Natural Products Expo West in California. The purees can be sold to other food manufacturers and other food service customers. The company’s unique process allows purees to be stored at room temperature for up to two years. The sterile packaging system also uses 30 per cent less water and energy than other processes currently in use in the industry. Government funding represents 50 per cent of the cost of the new equipment. The Growing Value

program provides financial assistance to help existing agri-businesses adapt to market forces and environmental considerations, increasing their ability to compete in domestic and international markets. The federal and provincial governments are investing $176 million in cost-shared programming in Manitoba under Growing Forward 2, a five-year, federal-provincial-territorial policy framework to advance the agriculture industry, helping producers and processors become more innovative and competitive in world markets. Quotes “The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Canada’s producers and food processors. Investments such as this help promote growth in our Canadian agricultural industry and increasing income opportunities for farmers.” - Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay “Manitoba’s food processing sector continues to grow, driven by new ideas, technology-savvy entrepreneurs and consumer demand for foods and drinks that are nutrient-dense,” said Minister Kostyshyn. “This creates new jobs, strengthens the rural economy and encourages growth throughout the entire agricultural industry.” - Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn “I am very proud of the good work our team has done in building this world-class food processing business. This type of value-added agri-business is a very important part of the community. We are creating jobs, building innovation in food processing and creating more opportunity for area farmers to sell their crops not only locally but around the world. This funding is critical to the success of small businesses like ours. My partners, Harvey and Martin Pollock and I are very grateful to receive it and will put it to work, growing and expanding our young business.” - Chief operating officer and owner of Canadian Prairie Garden Puree Products Inc., Kelly Beaulieu. b Source: Gov’t of MB

New Pitbull TM 2300 Propane Screener Lake Erie Portable Screeners introduces a propane-powered screener as a clean and costeffective alternative to diesel power. The new Pitbull 2300 Propane Screening Plant is one of the first of its kind, delivering maximum efficiency and high outputs with a wide range of materials, including topsoil, mulch, gravel, stone and asphalt. The machine’s low-emission propane components provide an alternative to diesel equipment affected by the spike in prices

caused by Tier 4 Final emission standards. “While we want to offer the market a low-emission, green product that performs with power, we recognized that the Tier 4 regulations on diesel engines were driving costs up. Our team looked for another solution,” said Stuart Foradora, Lake Erie Portable Screeners factory representative. “We built the Pitbull 2300 Propane with a cleaner burning engine that comes at very minimal additional cost. The screener has very low

emissions and is still compact, portable and able to handle all the applications the Pitbull 2300 can — plus more.” The Pitbull 2300P is almost the same machine as the Pitbull 2300, aside from the power source. Featuring a Zenith 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder, 48-horsepower propane engine that could also be easily converted to natural gas, it can do any job its diesel-powered counterpart can. The propane also results in a cleaner engine that’s easier to maintain, allowing it to run

longer with fewer repairs. That combination makes the machine a valuable and cost-effective tool for landscapers, energy facilities, contractors, municipal workers or as part of rental fleets. In addition, T4F diesel engines of the same size typically cost at least 30 percent more. The extremely low emissions make the Pitbull 2300P ideal for operation in confined spaces, such as buildings and mine shafts, and eliminate the need to obtain special permits. The Pitbull 2300P also provides a significant return on investment by making it unnecessary to buy or rent expensive ventilation systems and masks that would be required to run a diesel model in a tight space. The propane engine is also quieter than most diesels. Lake Erie Portable Screeners constructed the Pitbull 2300P to share the same features that make the Pitbull 2300 simple to use, maintain and transport. These include full hydraulic operation, tubu-

lar frame construction, a Torflex axle and a reversible shaker. With the Pitbull 2300P’s width of 8 feet, 4-1/2 inches and either a standard pintle hitch or an optional gooseneck towing package, the machine is easy to move from site to site. A 10K Torflex axle with oil bath hubs provides a cushioning effect so the unit tows smoothly, reducing stress to the tow vehicle. Upon arrival, users can quickly and easily lower the unit to operating position with the hydraulic system, eliminating pressure on the axle, tires or wheels during screening. When the machine is ready to be moved, the operator can return it back to towing position with the flip of a lever. The unit also features heavy-duty suspension, electric brakes and trailer lights for safe and legal travel. The Pitbull 2300P’s 20-foot-long stacking conveyor adjusts hydraulically from as low as 7 feet, 6 inches, up to 13 feet to feed material directly into a dump truck or tri-axle trailer. The height of the conveyor also allows operators to create bigger stockpiles, increasing efficiency by reducing the number of times equipment needs to be moved. These attributes, combined with the ability to place the machine at the point of excavation, minimize spillage and dramatically reduce cycle times and haulage costs often associated with loading and unloading material when using stationary plants. Lake Erie Portable Screeners builds Pitbull 2300P frames with high-quality, structural tube steel. The tubular construction cuts down on noise and vibration, which also minimizes the risk of cracks and structural failures common in machines with C-channel construction. The screening plant is made entirely

of heavy-duty materials, all the stress points are fully reinforced, and both attachment points and stress points are 100 percent welded with highstrength steel. The result is a machine with a curb weight of 13,500 pounds. The screening plant incorporates a loading apron that accepts up to three yards of material at a time depending on the feed rate. With its low dump height of 8 feet, 4-1/2 inches, operators do not need loading ramps; they can fill the hopper using typical construction equipment, such as skid steers, backhoes, loaders or excavators. The portable screening plant also has an upper and lower screening deck, each with more than 41 square feet of screening area. The decks are each equipped with two sections of screen media. The company offers optional finger decks for the top deck in addition to a wide range of screen openings for processing all types of materials. Operators can change screens quickly and easily by loosening the tension bolts holding them in place. The screeners also can be equipped with optional upper and lower discharge chutes to allow for classifying up to three different sizes of screened materials. In addition to the adjustable stacking conveyor, the Pitbull 2300P features a hydraulically driven transfer conveyor that moves screened material from the hopper to the stacking conveyor. Hydraulic motors on the conveyors provide continuous power flow to achieve production rates up to 100 yards of clean, saleable material per hour. The Pitbull 2300P conveyors are hydraulic rather than chain- or belt-driven like many competing models, a feature that eliminates the risk of power loss and downtime due to broken chains or belts. b Source: Iron Clad Mktg

Flex Supply Brings “The Best Units In The Field” For Portable Traffic Signals Highway construction and maintenance managers in the State of Texas now have a single source for knowledgeable service and reliable products for portable traffic controls. Peter Vieveen, President and founder of North America Traffic Inc. (NAT), has announced the appointment of Flex Supply LLC as authorized sales and service distributor for the NAT line of portable traffic signals and automated flagger assistance devices. Vieveen spoke highly of the latest addition to his growing distributor network. “With their ex-

tensive background in the construction industry and their years of experience in equipment rentals, Flex Supply is really the ideal fit for NAT’s customerfocused approach to business. They have first-hand insight into what customers need, plus the knowhow to deliver it.” Reliability for highway projects A family-run business under the ownership of Chad and Tracie Osborne, Flex Supply is based in Winona, TX and serves highway projects throughout the state. Chad Osborne reports that he was familiar

with NAT portable signals having had North America Traffic AFADs as part of their product line offering, and they now welcomed the opportunity to add the PTL line to their inventory. “This is a big state with a lot of miles between projects,” he notes. “Contractors need a reliable product on their site. They can’t afford to be waiting around for service because of a signal problem. With their responsibility to the public, they have to feel confident that their signals will do the job when they have lane closures overnight.” Flex Supply specializes in complete traffic control solutions, providing a complete range of TXDOTapproved barricades, signs and message boards, lighting systems and control devices. Now, Flex Supply can offer the original AFAD (automated flagger assistance device) as well

as NAT’s versatile range of solar-powered portable traffic signals and control systems. NAT committed to people The Osbornes, along with Sales Manager Frank Sturgeon, inspected the NAT headquarters, not far from Niagara Falls, before committing to their distribution agreement. Although the factory and engineering facility are well equipped with the latest manufacturing equipment and processes, the technology is not what impressed Flex Supply the most. “It’s their commitment and investment in their people,’ says Chad Osborne. “Their approach to production, to marketing, their continuous training... Peter’s leadership and his drive to make his company better for the customer is what set North America Traffic apart. We could see that NAT has the best unit in the field – and now we see that they have the best service support, too!” Save costs and improve safety Osborne feels that the simplicity of the NAT controls and setup is also uniquely suited to the needs of Texas customers.

April 2016

“Our construction season is 365 days,” Osborne continues. “So the workforce is very stable, but employees are also very focused on particular tasks. NAT equipment is simple enough, you don’t need to hire a dedicated crew member to set up traffic patterns and lane closures – anyone on the crew can learn this very quickly. That will save costs and will improve safety because you can have people who are qualified for the traffic equipment on site all the time.” Meeting specialized needs North America Traffic has earned its position in the market by constantly innovating and responding to unique needs. Flex Supply is already taking advantage of NAT’s custom engineering services by having them adapt a controller for its portable signals and hardwiring it into the controller programming for fixed signals at a diamond intersection. NAT will now offer the package as an option for standalone signals as well as for portable signals working in tandem with the permanent traffic lights. Flex Supply is

also working with NAT to streamline the automation features of the standard AFAD sets to reduce costs on units that will be used only by a dedicated onsite operator. Flex Supply has its initial NAT units for its fleet, with more to be delivered over the next several months. “We get calls every day about AFADs and signals,” Osborne reports. “In our other business, we install permanent signals and we work with traffic signals on a daily basis. We know what the business needs, and that’s why we chose North America Traffic.” b Source: MS&S

Regal “Rocks” At AGG1 With New Modular Pump Drive Patented pump drive adapts to almost any pump or drive with modular components. Shaker-screen bearings, paver bearings and adaptable high-torque reducers shown in cutaway. Regal Power Transmission Solutions introduces its new Durst modular hydraulic pump drive in booth 1230 at Agg1, along with exhibits and demonstrations of Rollway shaker screen and Sealmaster® bearings, as well as gritduty gear reducers from Browning, Hub City, and Foote-Jones. The booth will feature an operating gear drive submerged in sand to demonstrate Regal equipment durability, as well as the capabilities of the company’s wireless machinery health-monitoring system. Visitors can also use an “Interactive Plant” touchscreen to pull up details on Regal product solutions shown in aggregate and paving operations. Patented pump drive with one to eight pump connections Durst’s new hydraulic pump drive uses a patented modular design featuring pump pads and spline

adapters that allow rapid build of units to fit almost any input shaft or SAE pump connection. Clever engineering allows a single gear case to fit different bell housings on the driven side. Engineered with modular internal gears and exceptional parts consolidation, the pump’s design enables rapid assembly and shipment from build centers throughout the U.S. The compact unit begins with a cast iron housing, AGMA Class 10 spur gearing, heavy duty ball bearings and a one-piece gear and shaft design for long, rugged service. The pump’s patented pad design ensures a continuous flow of oil through the bearing to provide constant wet-spline operation even at startup. Durst, along with Hub City and Foote-Jones, is also structured for rapid development of “one off” modified-standard units and invites inquiries for non-cataloged drives, as well as full custom units. Quick-delivery shaftmount and concentric reducers Hub City’s PowerTorque shaft-mount re-

ducers will be displayed in cutaway to highlight the carburized and ground, AGMA-11 gears that provide exceptionally high torque density in a compact package, with up to 98.5 percent efficiency per stage. These versatile units are ideal value-priced dropin replacements for applications such as bucket elevators and bulk conveyors. A wide range of accessories includes conversion kits for screw conveyor applications. Warranted for 18 months, they feature metal-reinforced double-lip seals riding on precisionground shafts to deliver long service life. Ready for off-the-shelf delivery, PowerTorque reducers are available in 10 sizes up to 200 hp rating, with output speeds to 200 rpm. 48-hour shipment is available on the most popular sizes and ratios of Foote-Jones Line-O-Power helical concentric-shaft reducers. A cutaway display at AGG1 highlights the rugged housings, highcapacity bearings, ground/ skived gears and large diameter shafts. Double-, triple- and quadruple-reduction units are available

in ten sizes up to 1550 hp input and 429,300 in-lb output. Surface-hardened helical gearing is rated to AGMA standards, and tapered roller bearings on all shafts provide anticipated bearing life in excess of AGMA standards. Models available in the Fast-Foote 48-hour delivery program include double and triple reduction units rated for up to 200 hp continuous input. Browning’s multi-patented TorqTaper Plus helical shaft-mount reducers allow easy installation from front or rear for compact installations with short shaft lengths. A patented threelayer barrier seal is key to the reducer’s industry leading three-year warranty. Available for up to 500 hp input, the TorqTaper reducer features carburized, ground AGMA-12 gearing and tapered roller bearings on all shafts, providing high torque densities that allow downsizing in many applications. Larger diameter shafts also allow high overhung loads. Grit-duty bearings for shaker screens, paving equipment and other harsh duty Regal’s Rollway business will display its spherical roller bearing for shaker screen applications at AGG1. These units are specially designed for high performance and long life in screening equipment to compensate for the high temperatures and thermal

differentials created by the application’s high speeds, accelerations and eccentric loads. Radial clearances are increased to between C3 and C4, with reduced tolerances for the bore, outside diameter and internal clearance. A high-quality alternative to more costly products, Rollway shaker screen bearings meet industry standards with a robust design that starts with 100-percent forged rings and superfinished races for long life in adverse, marginal-lubrication conditions. The thick-section, two-piece brass cage is centrifugally cast and machined, guided on the outer race for precision and stability during harsh use. Sealmaster Paver Bearings will demonstrate why they are industry standard for OEM builders of asphalt equipment. Engineered with various combinations of front and rear double-lip contact seals that withstand temperatures up to 400°F, Sealmaster Paver bearings can further protect interior components with optional front and rear rotating seals, as well as optional shields. The high-temperature components and three layers of protection enable the bearings to effectively shield the interior components and resist the heat and erosion of asphalt. Ductile or cast iron housings are available in eight mounting configurations. The wide inner race promotes stability on the shaft

and the wide outer ring provides improved misalignment capability within the housing. A unique land riding brass retainer minimizes wear on both ball and retainer, while maximizing stability. Sealmaster Paver Bearings are factory replacement for the most common brands of asphalt handling machinery. Sealmaster Mounted Gold ball bearings, USRB mounted spherical roller and RPB mounted tapered roller bearings are engineered with unique and patented features for superior sealing to retain grease and exclude contaminants in harsh environments. The Gold Line of mounted ball bearings utilize the industry’s widest outer race and a heavy duty labyrinth seal, allowing for the unique land riding ball retainer and space for the dimple and lock pin to stabilize the insert. This maintains a direct line of lubrication into the bearing cavity. The locking pin and dimple system prevents outer race rotation and allows a full ± 2 degrees misalignment. Sealmaster USRB performance mounted spherical roller bearings feature black oxide treated bearing steel races with optimized geometry for load capacity, misalignment and speed capabilities. The USRB is available in both setscrew locking and adapter mounting system. The felt

and serves as the hub of an expanding downtown medical district in New Orleans. For the UMC New Orleans project, Lafarge provided high-performance concrete containing two different blended cement mix designs that incorporated NewCem slag cement and fly ash. Blended cements, which contain supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), enhance the strength and durability of concrete, reduce concrete’s permeability to water and aggressive chemicals, and contribute to LEED credits. The use of SCMs such as slag (a by-product of steel-making) and fly ash (a coalcombustion by-product) in concrete enables the reuse of industrial by-products that would otherwise be landfilled and reduces the amount of virgin material required for concrete. Lafarge North America is making essential contributions to building more durable cities with highperformance concrete containing NewCem slag cement and fly ash to achieve the high-strength, resiliency and sustainability goals of the new University Medical Center (UMC) of New Orleans. Since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Southeast Louisiana has worked diligently to create a stronger, more resilient built environment. Constructed to withstand a variety of natural disasters, the 2.3-million square-foot UMC complex, which opened in August 2015, restores much-needed healthcare services to the local community and serves as a key center for academic training and research. The $1.1 billion state-of-the-art facility, which is designed to LEED Silver standards, is the only level one trauma center in the region

takes the form of loss of adhesion and strength but may also be seen as expansion, cracking and spalling. Due to the severe (Class 3) sulphate-rich soil found at the project site, Lafarge’s quality control team evaluated the sulphate resistance of various high-performance mix recipes over 18 months using ASTM test method C1012. Based on those studies, Lafarge recommended and supplied 34,000 cubic yards of a high-performance concrete containing a 50% Portland Type I/II-50% NewCem slag cement blend for the United States Press Release PAGE 2/2 foundation slabs that would provide longterm durability, impart high sulphate resistance and achieve a compressive strength of 7,000 psi. The resilient and eco-friendly design of the UMC complex also relied on 75,000 cubic yards of high-performance concrete containing a 20% fly ash-80% Portland Type I/II blended cement mix that Lafarge produced and supplied for the beams, columns, elevated floors and other structural applications. b

Terex Trucks’ Odyssey To Myanmar It was an epic ten-week journey, covering a staggering 13,000 thousand miles by road, river and sea - but 29 hard-wearing Terex Trucks have arrived at the jade mines of Myanmar to work on one of the most remote and challenging terrains to be found anywhere. Believed to be the bringer of prosperity and good fortune, Jade is an extremely valuable commodity in Asian cultures, said to be a bridge between heaven and hell. Kachin State in northern Myanmar is home to some of the world’s highest quality deposits, known as jadeite. These are estimated to be worth up to US$31 billion annually, almost half of the country’s GDP, and are shipped overseas for use in jewellery and other products. Much of the extrac-

tion of the jade deposits is done by ‘boulder mining’. This is a process where the overburden material is removed to expose the rocks below, after which the jade-containing rocks are separated, washed and processed to reveal the pockets of precious jade inside. The extraction process is far from easy. It’s a tough job for robust, reliable equipment. And this is no place for breakdowns. That’s why, when three local mine operators needed additional hauling machines to take on the job of transporting thousands of tonnes of blasted rocks and earth 2 km or more from the mine to the processing plant, they called on Terex Trucks. In for the long haul The three mining companies - Aung Hein Min Gems Co., Ltd., Yar Za Htar Ne Gems Co.,Ltd.,

Myanmar Thura Gems Co., Ltd . – contacted Yangon-based dealer Aung Hein Min Co. Ltd (AHM Heavy) to supply them with 19 Terex Trucks 91 tonne (100 ton) capacity TR100s and 10 Terex Trucks 55 tonne (60 ton) capacity TR60s. For two of the customers, Terex Trucks had already proved their worth. Aung Hein Min Gems Co., Ltd had previously ordered six 38 tonne (41.9 ton) capacity TA400 articulated haulers, while Yar Za Htar Ne Gems Co. Ltd. had 20 Terex Trucks TA400 in their fleet. Myanmar Thura Gems Co., Ltd is a new customer. Choosing the right trucks for the job was the easy part. AHM Heavy, a Terex Trucks dealer since 2013, now had somehow to tackle the challenge of transporting the machines over 13,000 miles from

the manufacturing plant in Motherwell, Scotland to the isolated mines of Phakant in Kachin State, northern Myanmar. What followed was a mammoth expedition by container ship, barge and road that took the trucks a total of two and a half months for the trucks to complete. Ready, steady, go The first part of the journey, which took five weeks, saw the trucks assembled and packed in Motherwell before being transported 9,000 nautical miles (16,668 km) to Yangon, via Singapore by containership. Once in Yangon the trucks were transferred to three barges, with a maximum of 10 per barge. “Loading the trucks onto the barges was no easy task,” says AHM Heavy’s Marcus-Zaw Naing Oo. “To avoid sinking the barges and trucks they were loaded in a shuffle sequence to maintain the barge’s balance until all machines were in place. “Water levels were critical at this point. If the water level is too low, it cannot support the barge and its cargo. Too high and with a fast flowing river, it’s unsafe and we risk the barge and trucks being swept away.” Once loaded safely the trucks began their journey along the Uyu River to Phakant’s closest port, Kathar. This part of the journey, just under 600 miles (966 km), took a further three weeks. Once disembarked the final leg of the journey – a mere 120 miles (193km) – took just three days, with the trucks driving to the mine site’s equipment yards in Phakant. But even this part of the journey was difficult. “The trucks were delivered during Myanmar’s wet season,” says MarcusZaw Naing Oo, “so the roads were often flooded and very muddy, but thanks to their excellent traction the trucks were able to cope with the conditions and we completed the journey relatively easily.” Mission accomplished Safely arrived at their final destination, the machines were then tested and commissioned by AHM Heavy’s Terex Truck trained engineers to the satisfaction of the

April 2016

clients. With this process completed the trucks were then registered with the Myanmar Government. This new registration scheme takes three to four weeks and is required of all existing and new equipment operated at the country’s mines. The trucks are now fully up and running, working almost 24/7, says MarcusZaw Naing Oo, only undergoing scheduled stoppages for planned maintenance and servicing. The new trucks are only operational during Myanmar’s dry

season, which runs from roughly November to May. For the remainder of the year, they are stood down. “The trucks are playing a vital role, transporting blasted rock and earth from the mine to the processing plant,” says Marcus-Zaw Naing Oo. “So far feedback form the client has been excellent. Our reports showing outstanding availability, productivity and fuel efficiency, with no major faults, or maintenance requirements.” b

seal with flinger provides a good balance between contaminant entry, grease retention and friction. RPB Series tapered roller bearings feature rugged split cast-iron housings and cartridge inserts. The inserts are field replaceable to simplify maintenance and maximize uptime. The bearing cartridge is designed to compensate for ± 3 degrees static misalignment. Patented felt lined seals, mounted between the races, act like a filter, and a rotating flinger helps repel contamination buildup on the seals. Building Bridges Work continues on Montreal’s Champlain Bridge Corridor.

A

s a manager of important infrastructure, The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) is a Crown corporation established in 1978 that is responsible for the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the Champlain Bridge, the Champlain Bridge Ice Control Structure, the Île des Sœurs Bypass Bridge, the federal sections of Bonaventure Expressway and the Honoré Mercier Bridge, as well as the Melocheville Tunnel. The Corporation manages, maintains, and repairs these important Greater Montreal structures to ensure the safe passage of thousands of users every day. It also ensures that these critical structures remain safe, fully functional and aesthetically pleasing both today and in the future. At a technical briefing in December, JCCBI presented

its report on major projects carried out in 2015. The ambitious program established at the start of the season was completed despite a highly challenging work environment. JCCBI has completed maintenance and repair work on its entire network to ensure user safety, Greater Montreal mobility, and infrastructure longevity. Here is a summary of these projects: Integrated management of Champlain Bridge To maintain the safe passage of users until the opening of the new corridor, JCCBI implemented exceptional measures on the Champlain Bridge. Through the integrated management of data on bridge condition and behaviour, JCCBI identified priority projects and preventively managed the

risks associated with this infrastructure at the end of its service life. As of December 2015, 34 modular trusses have been installed on the Champlain Bridge and 43 will be added in 2016. Modular trusses are additional steel structures that support the full load of the girders. They are installed under the edge girders and rest on the bridge piers. These structural components fully compensate for current and future deterioration of the edge girders. Work to replace expansion joints and repair piers was also carried out as part

of the major maintenance program. In addition, a new traffic light system for truck traffic was commissioned in summer 2015 to optimize load distribution on the bridge. A full 90% of this work was carried out from the river to minimize traffic obstructions. Thanks to these preventive measures on the Champlain Bridge, including work in response to the recommendations of the latest inspection report, JCCBI observed a significant improvement in overall bridge behaviour. Bonaventure Expressway JCCBI finished replacing the deck of the raised lanes of the Bonaventure Expressway by completing the segment in the Avenue Pierre-Dupuy sector. The repair program began in 2008. Honoré Mercier Bridge

As part of its program to replace the deck of the Honoré Mercier Bridge, JCCBI has completed work on the deck section above the seaway. Initially planned on an accelerated eight-week schedule, repair work was completed 15 days early. Replacement of the Honoré Mercier Bridge deck is the biggest project carried out by Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Jacques Cartier Bridge To breathe new life into the structure and extend its lifespan another 50 years, JCCBI has continued its major maintenance program on the Jacques Cartier Bridge. The steel structure above the St. Lawrence Seaway was painted, and work was carried out on the steel structure and piers below the bridge.

Champlain Bridge Ice Control Structure Major work to build a dedicated bike path and reinforce the deck on the Champlain Bridge Ice Control Structure will continue until spring 2016. These five major work blitzes at the Champlain Bridge exemplify collaboration and work optimization. 2016 projects include the Jacques Cartier Bridge lighting project, with the installation of lighting systems in summer-fall 2016. JCCBI is proud to leverage its expertise in leading this flagship project that is part of the festivities surrounding the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation and Montreal’s 375th anniversary. Don Hummer Knows Trucks: Test Drives Kenworth T680 For A Month Prior To Large Order Don Hummer has a simple philosophy. “I would never ask a driver to do something that I wouldn’t do myself.” And, for Hummer, founder and chairman of Oxford, Iowa - based Don Hummer Trucking, that includes putting his drivers behind the wheel of a truck he hasn’t personally driven and approved. His latest “stamp of approval” is on the Kenworth T680, after he drove one for 30 days. With 215 company trucks and 85 independent contractors, the truckload carrier provides primarily dry van service for customers in a variety of industries, with a heavy focus on packaged foods and food ingredients, office furniture and building products. Hummer said he’s always been hands-on – leaving the office several times a year, on long-distance trips delivering freight. Staying in tune with drivers and customers keeps him grounded, he said. “Our customers don’t even know it’s

me when I’m out there making deliveries. The purpose is to stay connected with the business and drive the same routes, with the same equipment as our drivers. I’m one of them.” Last July, Hummer and his son Chris, president of the company, visited with MHC Kenworth, which had just expanded its territory into Iowa. According to Chris, the Hummers liked what they saw in the T680 and decided to rent a truck from PacLease for one month, in order to gauge comfort and performance. “I’ve driven a lot of trucks over my lifetime,” said Don, who started his career driving a Kenworth cabover for his father, before starting his own company in 1982. “The T680 is the most driver-friendly truck I’ve ever driven. I was astonished with the truck when I drove it for a month. And I still am. It is so quiet, and the interior and exterior fit-and-finish is just exceptional. When I was done driving the truck,

it was the first time in my career where I wasn’t thinking to myself, ‘I wish this was there, or this was positioned here.’ This Kenworth was cut right.” According to Chris, the company was so sold on the T680 that the company ordered 75 units with the 76-inch sleeper. The trucks, purchased through MHC Kenworth – Cedar Rapids, are powered with the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 455 hp, and use primarily Eaton Fuller Advantage Series 10- speed automated transmissions. “That was the largest single order we’ve made in the last 10 years. We really felt good about how drivers would react,” Chris said. “And reaction was even better than we expected. When we brought in new trucks in the past, we always have had drivers who would say, ‘No thanks, I’m happy with the truck I’m in.’ This was the first time where every driver who was offered the new truck

took the keys. Each driver wanted the T680 – not one wanted to stay with the truck they were driving.” With a solid base of quality drivers, and an experienced support staff in all departments including Don’s son Andrew managing Customer Service, Don Hummer Trucking, has doubled in size over the last five years. The company’s tagline is Delivering Value, which Chris said “conveys that customers should expect the best overall value when partnering with Don Hummer Trucking. Safety is never compromised and the company consistently ranks at the top of our customers service expectations for truckload carriers.” “We plan to continue with expansion where it makes sense, and an essential component to any growth is our ability to attract and retain quality professional truck drivers,” continued Chris. “We’re well below the industry average in driver turnover. We pay well and have always offered nice equipment. Running a premium truck like the Kenworth T680 shows drivers that we are serious about providing them with comfortable, safe and efficient equip-

ment to do their job. There is no shortage of positive comments on the trucks from the quietness, to the layout in the sleeper with the rotating table, to all the room for storage. We want to be the carrier of choice for our customers and professional drivers, so it only makes sense to offer the best equipment available.” Chris also said the Kenworth T680 is driving home bottom-line results. “Fuel economy is the best we’ve ever seen with brand new trucks, and compared to other aerodynamic trucks we’ve bought in years past, we’ve seen a 4 percent bump* with the T680. That’s big. We see it as a combination of the T680’s aerodynamics and the fuel efficiency of the PACCAR MX-13 engine.” According Chris, reliability and a reduction in downtime is also critical to success for the company. “It’s another reason we went with the MX-13. We wanted an integrated drivetrain and wanted any issues with the truck or engine to be handled through a single source, eliminating the need to manage additional vendor/supplier relationships. And, that’s what we get with MHC Ken-

worth and its footprint (67 dealerships in 16 states). MHC is a growing entity, just like we are, and they share the same culture and drive to be the best. Our professional drivers and experienced staff deliver value for our customers and MHC and Kenworth deliver value for us.” b Source: Kenworth
