Equipment Overhaul: Steps To Take Before Selling Do you know the worth of your under-utilized or aging heavy equipment? Your machines are probably more valuable than you

think, especially if you’ve kept the items in good working condition. Unfortunately, heavy equipment that is unused, rarely used

and aging loses value the longer it sits in a fleet yard. The good news is that there are plenty of eager buyers around the world who are

willing to take used equipment off your hands, even during the off season. But before you put equipment up for sale, there are four

April 2014

important steps to take in order to maximize an item’s resale value and get the most out of the sale of your used equipment. 1. Maintain equipment Basic maintenance can make a big difference in the quality of your equipment and its resale value. If an item is in poor condition, the pool of buyers interested will be significantly smaller than if the machine has been taken care of properly. Owners that implement a preventative maintenance program immediately after purchasing equipment ensure that items stay in the best possible condition over time and can then offer buyers reliable machines. Basic maintenance can prevent the failure of major equipment parts, especially hydraulic components. Hydraulic cylinders can leak oil or other pressurized fluids if bushings or seals rot, wear or crack. A preventative maintenance program should focus on: • Repairing mechanical, structural and cosmetic issues as they arise; • Keeping engines welloiled and hydraulic fluid

at proper levels, and changing fluids as per manufacturer recommendations; • Replacing parts that have visible corrosion or damage, such as rusting hardware and broken windows; • Recapping or replacing tattered tires at the first signs of wear; • Keeping a schedule and record of all equipment services. 2. Clean equipment Cleaning equipment on a regular basis not only prevents residue buildup and keeps it in top shape, but also improves the resale value once it is time to auction items. Over time, grease hardens and needs to be scraped off areas around knuckles and on booms. Mud and vegetation can build up in and around tracks, especially during the winter and early spring, therefore, it’s recommended owners clean these areas often. Removing dirt, grime and debris from both the interior and exterior of a machine keeps it looking its best and operating efficiently. Thoroughly cleaning the equipment both inside and out is Continued on page 5

highly recommended prior to sale as a clean unit often obtains a higher selling price. 3. Repair equipment It’s important to know when to make equipment repairs and when to skip the investment. There is not a universal guide to the right cost/value ratio, but sellers should remember that most buyers will be looking for equipment in the best possible condition. In addition to maintaining hydraulics, all major components, such as the engine and transmission, should function properly. Before putting equipment up for auction, sellers should research recent sales of similar items to assess the potential value. A seller should consider making only the most necessary repairs if the estimated cost of repairs and the original amount invested in the item outweighs the projected return. Where equipment requires repairs involving too much investment, the seller should consider selling the machine for parts. 4. Find the ideal selling platform What seller wouldn’t

want to save time and money when disposing of equipment? Using an online marketplace, sellers eliminate transportation costs associated with physical auctions because equipment is sold from where it sits. Additionally, owners can list equipment when the time is right for their business in order to take advantage of the cash flow for equipment required for future work. Inspection reports can instill greater confidence when buying equipment sight unseen. These should include photos and detail features and the current condition of the equipment. Guarantees behind the inspection report provide assurance that what a buyer sees online is what they will get upon delivery. When bidders have greater confidence in purchasing over the Internet, sellers can attract a larger audience and potentially a higher selling price. Online auctions also offer global reach. Although it may be the off season for the seller, online auctions appeal to buyers in areas with immediate or year-round needs for par-

ticular types of equipment. Online marketplaces reach developing countries as well, where the demand for older, less advanced equipment can be higher. Owners and fleet managers need to consider the impact of depreciation on value when letting underutilized and aging equipment sit in their yards. Taking simple steps to maintain your heavy equipment allows you to reach a greater number of bidders and helps buyers who may not be able to afford new top-of-the-line equipment. Disposing of the equipment in an efficient manner, via an online marketplace, will also take the hassle out of the selling process and provide greater value.

New Regulations To Help Guide Nova Scotia As Tidal Energy Leader New provincial tidal energy regulations will allow early stage projects to connect to Nova Scotia’s power grid. Energy Minister Andrew Younger, on January 21, announced the regulations that will help developers invest hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new renewable industry in the province. “Nova Scotia is becoming a world leader in innovation for in-stream tidal turbines and other emerging technologies, and I am fully committed

to advancing this industry here and around the globe,” said Mr. Younger. “I made a commitment to the tidal industry that we would get these regulations done by the end of January and I am pleased we now have them approved. “These regulations will help ensure the industry can invest money and create jobs to install 15 to 20 megawatts of tidal-power capacity in Nova Scotia over the next five or six years, and more in years to come.”

ACCIONA has signed a contract to supply 34 turbines for a 102 MW wind farm in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It will carry out the construction, internal electrical infrastructures and assembly, and will also undertake the operation and maintenance of the facility. “We’re pleased to apply our full range of wind energy services to provide the best value for this project.” The South Canoe wind farm, which will be the largest in Nova Scotia, has been developed by three local companies: Oxford Frozen Foods, Minas Basin Pulp and Power and the utility company Nova Scotia Power, to which the power generated will be sold. It will use ACCIONA Windpower AW3000/116 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3 MW, hub height of 92m, and a rotor diameter of 116 metres. The facility will supply electricity equivalent to the consumption of 32,000 homes and will help the province of Nova Scotia reach its renewable energy targets.

“A full range of wind power services” “ACCIONA was able to deliver what the South Canoe Project team asked for: a complete solution including highlyreliable and high-capacity turbines, construction services and operations and maintenance,” said Ilya Hartmann, CEO of ACCIONA Energy North America. “We’re pleased to apply our full range of wind energy services to provide the best value for this project.” The supply of wind turbines was awarded to ACCIONA following a rigorous selection process and a detailed analysis of its experience in the sector. ACCIONA Windpower North America CEO Enrique Teruel says the company “is proud to be part of the South Canoe Wind Project and to continue expanding the track record of our AW3000 turbine in North America.” Almost 1,500 MW in orders for the AW3000 To date, orders for the AW3000 turbines amount to 1,491 MW; the machines are destined for wind farms in

April 2014 The government worked with industry to develop the regulations for large-scale tidal developments connected to the electricity grid with a capacity of at least 500 kilowatts. The regulations were developed after the province’s Utility and Review Board set a feed-in tariff for the tidal projects last fall. It will likely be early 2015 before a turbine, or a group of turbines, are in the water at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) in the Minas Channel and producing electricity on a trial basis. The timeline estimate will be updated after successful bidders for berths at FORCE are announced this Spring. b nine different countries. Nearly half this figure corresponds to wind farms in North America, and 78% of the total capacity will be supplied to customers outside the ACCIONA Group. ACCIONA Windpower’s wind turbines come with four rotor diameter options: 100, 109, 116 and 125 meters to suit the conditions at each site, and are mounted on steel and concrete towers with a height of between 87.5 and 140 meters. Third project with AW turbines in Canada South Canoe will be the third wind farm incorporating ACCIONA Windpower turbines in Canada’s Maritime Provinces. The ACCIONA Group subsidiary signed a contract for the supply of AW3000/116 turbines for a 30 MW wind farm on Prince Edward Island, which is currently in the assembly phase. The 45 MW Lamèque wind farm in the New Brunswick province has been in operation since 2011; it is owned by ACCIONA Energía and is equipped with 1.5 MW AW1500 turbines. As an owner, ACCIONA also participates in three other wind farms in Canada: Magrath and Chin Chute in the province of Alberta (both 30 MW) and Ripley in Ontario (76 MW). b

Rockster Had The Right Solution A road building company in Argentina faced a serious problem. A new road had to be built but there was no fine grade material available in this area because the next quarry was too far and the only available material was very dirty. Rockster Recycler offered the perfect solution for this requirement the impact crusher R1100 in combination with the scalping screen RSS515. Alquimac SRL is a well-established engineering and road construction company, located in the middle of Argentina and employing 450 people. They have a variety of huge road building projects and therefore they need reliable and powerful machines. First decision - the purchase of a R1100 The ease of maintenance and service and the optimal dimensions of the Rockster crushers were good arguments for

the Austrian manufacturer. Also the skyrocketing costs of fuel and transport in the last years and the great distances in Argentina made the decision on investing in the mobile impact crusher R1100 equipped with the screen box RS94 and the return belt RB85. "Because of the 32 tons total weight, a modern and robust design and an impressive crushing performance of about 350 to/h, the R1100 is the perfect product for large-scale jobs where you still need a compact and transport-friendly machine", says the CEO of Alquimac, Mauricio Pascucci. Furthermore the R1100 is equipped with a fully hydraulic system and features a 2-step pre-screener. This ensures beneath a maximum pre-screening quality also an increase of throughput rate, a reduction of wear costs

and a perfect separation of final material. With the additional screen box and return belt the road constructor is able to produce high quality grains in one workflow. Second decision - the additional screening plant RSS515 A challenging project was a 50 km road building project where there was no possibility to get quality material and there were no quarries within a 30 km radius. So Alquimac had to find a solution that fits these exceptional conditions. The available material, limestone with more than 80 percent fines, needed to be prepared in a cost-effective way to high quality material. Rockster offered the specific solution: Mr. Agustín Holt, Rockster's South American country manager, suggested using the new scalping screen RSS515, ad-

ditionally to the R1100 impact crusher, which is the perfect product for separating very difficult material. The robust design with low machine weight, the low feeding height and the fuel savings up to 25 percent impressed the customers. “All Rockster machines are equipped with hydrostatic power, exactly delivered when it's needed. Moreover they have a fully hydraulic operating system and compact transport dimensions” argued Mr. Holt. The RSS515 has two side conveyors which transport two already separated pre-cut materials (0/6 mm and 6/19 mm) and one oversize belt which conveys the clean stone into the Rockster crusher. With this system Alquimac is getting a 100 percent defined final grain. “Now we can increase drastically the throughput of our Rockster R1100 and meet our production targets”, says Mr. Pascussi. The combination of the scalping screen RSS515 and the mobile Impact crusher R1100 is the perfect solution for Alquimac. b

CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE 2014 Set New Records CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2014 took center stage in Las Vegas March 4-8 with tremendous energy and serious buyers. Total registration of 129,364 soared past the last edition of the shows as they achieved the secondhighest attendance in their history. The shows also set new records for exhibit space, number of exhibitors and education tickets sold. The co-located CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE, at the Las Vegas (USA) Convention Center, delivered a global showcase of the newest product innovations and technologies for the construction, construc-

tion materials and fluid power/power transmission/motion control industries with more than 1,000 new products and services on display. Attendees also took advantage of the shows’ strong industry education programs and the unparalleled opportunity to connect with industry peers, take the pulse of what’s happening and learn what the future holds. “The enthusiasm and traffic on the show floor was just incredible. Exhibitors cited the high quality of attendees; they told us these were serious buyers and reported robust sales to existing as well as new

customers that exceeded their expectations,” stated Megan Tanel, CONEXPOCONAGG Show Director. Quality Attendance, International Scope CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE 2014 maintained the growing international scope of the shows with international registrations totalling more than 31,000, or an increase of nine percent from the most recent events. The number of countries represented increased to 170 from 159 in 2011, and the number of international attendees matched the record 24 percent of total attendance set in 2011. International attendance drew heavily from Latin America, China, Canada, and Europe. More than 75 percent of show visitors were in managerial roles (with 36 percent of these with the top titles of President/Owner and Vice President/General Manager/Chief Financial Officer). Both shows set new records for exhibit space and number of exhibitors, CONEXPO-CON/AGG with more than 2.35 million net square feet of exhibit space and more than 2,000 exhibitors, and IFPE with more than 161,000 net square

feet and 400 exhibitors. A record 41,000 education ticket sales were sold to the shows’ education programs, underscoring their relevance to helping attendees succeed in today’s business environment. “CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2014 reflected the feeling of momentum building in the industry. We are industry-run shows with industry needs put first; these show numbers are a testament to the value attendees, exhibitors, and other stakeholders derive from their participation,” stated Melissa Magestro, IFPE Show Director. Global Industry Gathering Place Among the show visitors were Acting U.S Deputy Secretary of Commerce Patrick D. Gallagher, Acting U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation Victor Mendez and former U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, who served as chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee from 2007 to 2011. The shows were chosen for the prestigious U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) International Buyer Program, which helps facilitate global attendance. More than 50 official international attendee delegations were organized by DOC as well as show industry partners. More than 95 allied associations and groups were official supporting organi-

zations, coming from the U.S., Canada and 16 other countries worldwide. Several national industry associations held their annual conventions or high-level board meetings at the shows; they joined hundreds of other industry and company meetings, from large events to smaller committees and other groups, all taking advantage of the shows to meet and share knowledge and learn from one another. Education and Exhibits The CONEXPO-CON/ AGG 2014 education program covered 120 sessions over 10 targeted tracks. The IFPE Technical Conference anchored IFPE 2014 education, joined by half-day “college-level courses” and a new Fluid Power Seminar series, from Hydraulics & Pneumatics magazine. CONEXPO-CON/AGG featured a new Demolition & Recycling exhibit pavilion from the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association (CDRA) and the Technology & Construction Solutions pavilion from the Associated General Contractors of America. IFPE featured exhibit pavilions from the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) and for sensors manufacturers and product suppliers. Reinforcing the global scope of the shows were eight international exhibit pavilions: CONEXPOCON/AGG with China,

Kobelco Brings New Demolition Line to North America Kobelco Construction Machinery USA is pleased to announce the launch of a new demolition equipment line for the North American market. Three models—the SK210D Multi-Dismantling Machine, the SK350DLC Scrap Handling Machine, and the SK1000DLC LargeBuilding Demo Machine are field proven with Kobelco being a market leader of demolition equipment in Japan. The company introduced the demolition line at ConExpo-Con/Agg 2014, March 4-8, in its 34,650 sq. ft. outdoor exhibit (Booth 4408 in Silver Lot 2). Each machine’s advanced features highlight Kobelco’s dedication to providing equipment that functions efficiently and safely in real-world worksite situations. The company’s new line of machines offers

powerful and practical solutions to almost any demolition task through the use of rugged designs, comfortable operator cabs and controls, and energy-efficient engines and hydraulic systems. The Kobelco SK210D Multi-Dismantling Machine is designed to take apart vehicle bodies, engines, and other metal components with precise, safe, and efficient operation. Two specialized crushers allow for different dismantling tasks: 1) a multi-dismantling crusher is suited for small-scale separating and the sorting of all types of metal products, including small parts such as electrical fittings and harnesses; and 2) an optional vehicle-dismantling crusher offers a powerful grab, increased cutting force and rotational torque powerful enough to cut through

a chassis and frame. The Kobelco Innovation Clamp Arm features a bowl-shaped grip and powerful cutting teeth with different shapes on the right and left sides to enable efficient bending, breaking and tearing. The Kobelco SK350DLC Scrap Handling Machine is engineered with practical features that help make the worksite run smoother and safer. A low centre of gravity and dedicated counterweight provides excellent dynamic stability. Its unique “bent boom” design makes dumping more efficient. The 26.9-ft. angled boom easily negotiates the sides of a trailer flatbed or the hatch coaming on a cargo container. The SK350DLC features a two-pin grapple that is more stable than a traditional onepin design, eliminating shaking and reducing spillage of

Canada-Quebec Partnership Supports A Green Energy Project In Montréal South Shore An environmentallyfriendly process of treating organic waste is one step closer to becoming a reality thanks to a partnership between the governments of Canada and Québec. The Honourable Senator Jean-Guy Dagenais recently confirmed the Government of

Canada’s support for the construction of new biomethanation and compost facilities in Beauharnois which will service the regions of Beauharnois—Salaberry and Roussillon. Thanks to these new facilities, organic waste material retrieved from the residential, industrial,

commercial and institutional sectors will be processed to produce biogas providing a new source of clean, renewable fuel and high quality compost for direct use on agricultural fields. The centre will accommodate the retrieval and treatment of up to 34 thousand metric tons of

loads. An elevating cab can be smoothly raised to 8’6” in about 20 seconds, giving the operator a maximum eyepoint height of 17.9’ and a clear view of operations. The Kobelco SK1000DLC Large-Building Demolition Machine falls in the 220,000lb. (100-ton) class and offers flexibility with four different attachments for job-specific strength and reach capabilities: 1) The GD Ultra Long Attachment puts the priority on reaching high places, extending up to 130’ with a 5,500-lb. (2.5 ton) class crusher; 2) the HD Ultra Long Attachment focuses on high-elevation crushing force with an 11,000-lb. An optional removable trans-lifter and stacking-type counterweight assist with easier preparation for shipment, and a dedicated 30° tilting cab presents operators with a safe line of sight and comfortable working posture. To support this introduction, Kobelco will initiate a dealer network dedicated to representing its line of

demolition equipment. This is just part of Kobelco’s continued expansion within North and South America as it increases dealer support and equipment offerings, including a full line of crawler excavators. Availability of the demolition line in North America is expected by mid2014. b

Montabert To Replace Tramac Brand In North America Montabert, a designer and manufacturer of hydraulic demolition and drilling attachments and pneumatic equipment, has announced plans to further extend its brand into North America and replace the Tramac brand name on select products. The rebranded products will include hydraulic breakers, plate compactors, drilling attachments and pneumatic equipment – all most recently branded “Tramac by Montabert,” which the French attachment manufacturer has been using to establish a North American Montabert brand presence. Montabert officials believe the joint branding effort has provided a strong foundation for the full North American brand launch. Simply put, customers who previously purchased Tramac products in North America were always purchasing Montabert products, just branded Tramac for distribution Scalper 107T Screen

The transition will take place this winter and into 2014, culminating with a heightened promotion of rebranded products at the highly anticipated CONEXPO-CON/AGG event in Las Vegas. “In many ways, this represents a brand extension opposed to a brand transition,” said Stephane Giroudon, Business Manager for Montabert North America. “We have developed an aggressive integrated marketing communications plan to address the brand’s underlying value proposition, including its long history of innovation and technological leadership as well as its experience in providing customers across the globe with superior equipment solutions. tions for both a quiet and efficient operation. It has improved fuel efficiency with a poweroptimized engine and load-sensed hydraulic circuits. The new GBox on GOMACO legs allows improved steering and grade with G+ controls. It’s part of GOMACO’s electronic and hydraulic initiative. GBox features a new location for the slave controller and proportional valves, reduces hose and wiring needs, eases serviceability and troubleshooting, and provides easy access with a horizontal swing door at ground level. It’s all part of the power and limitless potential of the exclusive, new GOMACO G+ control system. G+ controls make all of these advancements possible on the next generation GHP-2800, next generation Commander III, and all the machines in GOMACO’s full line of concrete equipment. Along with the G+ advantage, GOMACO also showcased improvements to their full line of concrete slipform pavers. The next generation GHP-2800 was equipped with the 5400 series paving mold and the rear loading, front inserting 5400 series bar inserter. The mold can be equipped with telescoping inserts and telescoping end sections for easy width changes. The GHP-2800 featured new 90 degree tracks to reposition the legs into transport mode, get on or off stringline, or to avoid obstacles on the job site. The legs also feature hydraulically-adjustable pivots for adjusting the paver’s leg position on-the-go. G+ Ground Control on GOMACO pavers offers an operator’s display at ground level with the same G+ graphical interface as the main operator’s station. Ground personnel can see everything on the screen that the operator can see, and also have the ability to fine tune the paver, make settings adjustments, and monitor the operation from the ground. The small and handy MiniMote available with G+ provides on-the-spot assis-

April 2014 tance for fine adjustment of the paver’s set up. G+ Connect features an entire library of sensor capabilities for controlling slope, grade and steer. The Sensor Library includes capabilities for paving with 3D systems, laser control, sonic sensors, rotary sensors, slope sensors, and all of their set-up requirements. The next generation Commander III with redesigned frame and operator’s platform including a new pivoting control console was introduced at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014. The frame accommodates Tier 4 engines and their cooling packages. The placement of the engine in the framework is reversed to provide increased operator visibility and the redesigned engine shroud provides easy access to service and fill points. The pivoting operator’s console allows the operator to have handson control and ultimate visibility no matter what application is being slipformed or the direction of travel. Along with the increased operator visibility, the next generation Commander III offers increased operator comfort. The operator’s platform is now isolated to eliminate vibration. It’s also quieter to work on the platform or around the machine. The Commander III has the new optimized cooling package and power-optimized engine. The excellent fuel efficiency combined with an increased fuel capacity allows an uninterrupted day of paving on the project. GOMACO showcased a full paving train in their booth, including a PS-2600 placer/spreader, the next generation four-track GHP2800 slipform paver, and new four-track T/C-5600 texture/cure machine. The G+ advantage for highproduction curb and gutter, sidewalk, safety barrier, half-width and full-width paving, variable width paving, and paving with automatic dowel bar insertion was displayed. The newest updates for the GSI, the GOMACO Smoothness Indicator tool for reading and achieving optimum rideability results, was showcased. The job-proven C-450 bridge deck finisher rounded out GOMACO’s CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 display. b

NB Contractors Pave The Way Construction is expected to resume soon on the $12-million Caraquet Bypass Project in Northern New Brunswick by Jennifer Gouchie t. Isidore Asphalt Ltd. was among the successful bidders on the project, having been awarded two contracts totalling about $6.8 million. The contracts are pretty typical in terms of size and scope for the company, which has been in business since 1969 and currently employs about 100 skilled tradesmen, professional engineers, certified technologists, estimators and office staff. “It’s about average size for us. We’ve been doing these types of projects since 1995,” says Grading Division Supervisor Ermel Hachey. The company has a proven track record for its capacity to meet private, commercial, institutional, municipal and provincial government requirements, and is fully equipped to handle just about any size project with its array of heavy equipment, which includes asphalt spreaders, backhoes, dozers, excavators, loaders, milling machines, rollers, articulated trucks, concrete trucks and dump trucks. Estimated at $3 million, the first project started in September, 2013 and involves the construction of a new overpass and approach for the realignment of Lavigne Street in Caraquet. The new bypass alignment will be a twolane route south of the existing Route 11 with an interchange at Legère Road and a grade separation at

Laving Road. It’s approximately 13 km in length, stretching from du Portage Road to Bertrand. “We’re basically doing the whole job from A-Z, with the exception of the aggregate and asphalt,” Hachey points out. “Over 200,000 tons of borrow will be trucked in from a site near the project by local private companies to build access roads for residents only in the construction area.” The second project is estimated at $3.8-million and involves clearing, drainage and construction up to subgrade elevation of the new Route 11. Clearing of the 4-5 km area got underway mid-March and is expected to take up to four weeks to complete. It includes all access roads, ramps and approaches. Water will be temporarily diverted from an existing brook until such time as drainage pipes, ranging in size from 1500-3000 millimetres in width and 30-40 metres in length, are installed. An additional 250,000 tons of borrow will be hauled in for that portion of the project. Construction wrapped up right on schedule last fall and, weather permitting, will start back up again the first or second week of May on both projects with a tentative completion date slated for the end of summer 2014. Approximately 10-15 local tradesmen will be

working on the first project and 25-30 on the second. Projects like this are important to the local economy and lead to both job creation and retention. “This will help companies to keep our expertise here in New Brunswick,” stresses Hachey. St. Isidore Asphalt Ltd. will have a battery of heavy equipment at each job site including excavators, dozers, loaders of all different sizes, articulated trucks, ridged frame trucks, compactors and cranes. However, trucking is being turned over to local private companies and off roads trucks will be rented when necessary. Ownership of facilities ensures both quality control and consistency at St. Isidore Asphalt Ltd., which has earned a reputation for its top-notch work and workers over the past 45 years. “We have very good supervisors on-site and employees with lots of experience,” assures Hachey. Richard Losier is founder and President of the company which consists of four different divisions — asphalt, crushing, grading and a portable asphalt plant that can be moved in just four to five days. Its main office is located in St. Isidore, but there’s also an office in Bathurst. The company has worked on a number of similar projects in the past,

highway between Moncton and Fredericton. The Caraquet Bypass Project is part of the New Brunswick Government’s $466 million Capital Budget for 2013-2014 that focused

on maintaining existing assets and completing projects already underway. It is hoped the new bypass will improve traffic flow and increase safety along that stretch of the highway. b

Midwest Port Prepares For More Heavy Lifting The ambitious multibillion-dollar project to widen the Panama Canal is having wide reaching impact on industries tied to the world’s shipping industry and tower cranes are certainly no exception. The expansion will mean that ports need to be able to handle bigger ships, more cargo and faster turnarounds. High capacity tower cranes, like the Linden Comansa 30LC1450 recently erected in Paducah, Kentucky are helping busy ports like the Paducah/

McCracken County Riverport Authority (Riverport) to deal with today’s vessel traffic and to be ready for tomorrow. For nearly 40 years, a 20-ton capacity Linden 8000 flat-top tower crane has handled incoming and outgoing freight on the banks of the Tennessee River where the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers meet. The Riverport has 48 total acres of space and 2,300 cumulative feet of river frontage. The port boasts on-site warehouse capacity

exceeding 40,000 tons, outside storage yards and adjacent fleeting and switching service. “Our Linden 8000 was erected in 1977 and served us well over a considerable length of time,” says Ken Canter, Executive Director of the Riverport. “The 20ton lifting capacity simply wasn’t enough for where we anticipate our port to go in the future. With our new Linden Comansa 30LC1450, we have greater market capabilities for the container on barge move-

ments to the Ohio Valley. It’s also pretty impressive to have the largest flattop tower crane in North America ready to serve traffic to our port.” A Riverport on the Move In addition to its central and accessible location with easy rail and highway access, the Riverport has two dock facilities and can handle up to three barges with different products quickly and efficiently, including bulk and general cargo. The facility has a conveyor system with a 30” belt that can move 500 tons per hour to warehouse or outdoor storage. It is becoming more and more of a strategic and economic advantage by moving products through this up-andcoming inland hub. “When we were looking to expand our port and add a marine cell,” notes Canter, “Linden Comansa was always one of the top contenders in our search for a new crane. Both Linden and Linden Comansa have proven themselves with service, competitive

pricing and reliability. We are also looking forward to continuing the partnership we have enjoyed with Heede Southeast.” Big Cranes Mean a Big Transition Before erecting the 30LC1450 in January 2014, Heede Southeast refurbished the original 1970 series Linden crane in the late 1990’s and continued to provide maintenance. “In the early days, working with a 60 or 75 ton meter crane that was the first flat-top model erected in North America, we really thought we were doing something special. The Linden 8000 tower crane is such a great tool to move material,” says Heede Southeast President Dennis Kenna. “Now, with new equipment and over 20 years of history with Paducah River Port Authority, it just makes sense that we should continue that relationship going forward.” With the United States undergoing one of the most difficult winters in recent memory, getting the mam-

moth crane ready for business was challenging, but not insurmountable for the “Supermen” on the Pineville, North Carolina-based Heede Southeast team. The crane arrived in Paducah on January 17, 2014 and, despite sub-zero temperatures and high winds, the 30LC1450 installation was completed on February 9, 2014. “Being involved hands on with the installation and commissioning of the largest flat-top tower crane in North America was remarkable,” remarks Kenna. “With over 40 years in the industry working with Linden and Linden Comansa cranes, witnessing that machine moving 62,000 pounds to a radius of 191 ft. was a memorable moment for us.” Tower Crane Technology Stands Tall While the dramatic size of the 30LC1450 sets it apart, the features that the Linden Comansa flattop tower cranes provide make it an unparalleled

Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · www.supplypost.com crane, but can also be configured for either 32 or 64 tons. “The differences in tower crane technology between the old 8000 and the new 30LC1450 are dramatic,” says Bill Carbeau, Vice President of Business Development for Linden Comansa America. “Digital readouts for wind, radius and weights are clearly displayed and crane operators can easily monitor all functions for proper operation. In addition, the frequency drives for slewing, trolley and hoisting movements allow for much less consumption of electricity.” For enhanced comfort of the crane operator, the 30LC1450 in Paducah has

CCA Supportive Of “Stay The Course” Budget The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) was encouraged by the continuing recognition in the recent federal budget of the importance of infrastructure investment and prudent labour market development to Canada’s long-term economic prosperity. “Sustained investment in infrastructure is critical to Canada’s long-term economic growth,” said Michael Atkinson, President of the Canadian Construction Association. “The additional federal commitments announced today, together with the earlier announced 10-year $53 billion Building Canada Plan effective April 1, 2014, will help governments across Canada continue the process of infrastructure renewal and set Canada on the path to a more globally

competitive economy.” The budget announced an additional $1.3 billion over two years in strategic investments in public infrastructure and transportation services, including $470 million over two years for procurement and project delivery costs associated with the Windsor-Detroit International Crossing. CCA was also pleased with the government’s focus on further measures to promote apprenticeship training and to assist in the implementation of the new Expression of Interest (EOI) economic immigration system. Budget 2014 introduces a new interest-free Canada Apprentice Loans program for apprentices in Red Seal trades of up to $4,000 per training period to help defray costs associated with

an optional “Panoramic XL” cab. It includes the advantages of the standard “Panoramic” cabin (acoustic insulation, full view of the load and work area, tinted glass, etc.), but it is half a meter longer. There is enough room for a small refrigerator, an air handling unit and a microwave or any other small appliance. The crane is also equipped with lights to illuminate the jobsite. With an innovative design that allows the upper part of the jib be folded up and down to save money on transport, the modular design of the LC3000 series enables Linden Comansa to deliver the biggest cranes as a highly affordable solu-

tion. Ready for the Future The Paducah/McCracken County Riverport Authority moves about 875,000 tons of cargo a year, loading and unloading approximately 400

barges. While there is not a significant amount of container cargo now, the expectation is that this type of freight will increase with the completion of the Panama Canal. In addition to the expansion of facilities,

the technical training portion of their apprenticeships. The new EOI system, expected to be based upon an existing Australian system, will likely see foreign-trained immigrants in high demand occupations given preference for permanent entry under existing economic immigration programs and will allow prospective applicants to pre-register on an online system that could also serve as an excellent recruitment tool for Canadian employers. “The construction industry like many industries in Canada is facing significant skilled labour shortages that require both short and long-term solutions,” said Atkinson. b

Atlas Copco Compressors Perform Under Polar Conditions At Norwegian Mine Winter temperatures at Norway’s remote Sydvaranger iron ore mine can plunge to –35°C. To keep things moving the mine relies on air dryers, oil-injected rotary screw compressors and oil-free compressors from Atlas Copco. Sydvaranger had three main reasons for choosing Atlas Copco as their supplier: “reliability, life-cycle cost and energy efficiency”. The Sydvaranger iron ore mine is located in Norway’s far north-east, about 400 km above the Arctic Circle. It sits in mountain-

ous terrain above both the small town of Kirkenes and Bøkfjorden, a waterway connected to the nearby Barents Sea. Einar Berg, Senior Mining Advisor, knows everything worth knowing about the open pits and the quality of the ore and the rock. “The weather conditions are the biggest challenge for mining in the area,” he says. “The summers are bright and warm, but in the winter we can have temperatures as low as –35 degrees.” Compressed air is the heart of the production

Atlas Copco has delivered air dryers, oil-injected rotary screw compressors and oil-free compressors to the mine. “We could immediately see that the extreme temperature conditions required a reliable choice of air dryers,” says Rune Mjørud Hansen, District Manager for Atlas Copco Compressor Technique Scandinavia. “Sydvaranger Gruve has chosen BD-dryers for their plant which gives them clean and dry air with a guaranteed dew point of at least -40°C. Compressed air is the heart of the production and if the air freezes,

tyjærvi. “We decided to invest in quality. We have previous experience from earlier production in the mine and know that we can trust equipment from Atlas Copco, and that access to spare parts is good.” Energy efficiency has become increasingly important within the mining industry. There is also an energy shortage. “The closure of the mine in 1996 created a surplus of electricity in the area that was then used for other business,” says Mentyjærvi. “When the mine was rehabilitated we had to build up a new supply chain, but the access to electricity isn’t unlimited and this has put extra focus on using energy efficient equipment.” Hansen points out that while compressors are not the biggest consumers of energy at Sydvaranger Gruve, minimizing operational costs leads to superior productivity. “Low pressure drop and dynamic control with dew point dependent switching was essential,” he says. “With our frequency controlled, oil-free compressor ZR400VSD, which provides precise pressure control, it’s not unusual to

have energy savings of up to 35%.” Sydvaranger Gruve has a 24-hour service contract with Atlas Copco and 20 staff are based on-site, conducting maintenance, service and repairs on the drill rig equipment. Einar Berg says the arrangement works well. “We have daily meetings where we plan and adjust the maintenance to the production,” he says. “That gives an appreciated flexibility and there have been very few problems.” Atlas Copco has also delivered lighting sets and several different types of drill and top hammer rigs to Sydvaranger. b

production is brought to a halt.” The mine’s active pit, Bjørnevatn, is located only two kilometers from the border with Russia. Coarsely crushed ore is transported on an eight kilometre long railway track – the most northerly railroad in Europe – down to Kirkenes. Here it undergoes further milling and separating and is turned into the concentrate that is shipped to smelting plants in Asia or Europe. “What some consider a remote location may be an advantage for others,” says Berg. The first commercial cargo ever to go through the Northern Sea route was iron ore from Sydvaranger on the way to China in 2010. That route saves 40% on time, fuel and emissions compared to a conventional route. “We decided to invest in quality.” Arnfinn Mentyjærvi, Maintenance Manager at the mine, says Sydvaranger had three main reasons for choosing Atlas Copco equipment – “reliability, life-cycle cost and energy efficiency”. “You can look at the price tag or you can look at the total cost,” says Men-
