New Comfortable Workplace In The Maxcab Cab Since 2007, the Sennebogen Maxcab has been setting standards in the world of materials handling with its sliding door and air-sprung comfort seat. As the most-installed cab of all Sennebogen cab models, the Maxcab has been given a new interior for the bauma. The entire driver area has been optimized to meet the latest requirements in ergonomics. A new comfort seat and perfectly arranged joysticks and controls make work more relaxed, facilitating concentration and minimizing any symptoms of fatigue. The revised, ergonomic shape of the Sennebogen joysticks facilitates the delicate actuation of all functions and is easier on the wrists. Safe access and pleasant sense of space The tried-and-tested sliding door and the sturdy platform with railing provide maximum safety and comfort even when getting into the cab. The door opening is particularly large, which makes getting in and out of the Maxcab easier. Overall, the new driver area of the Maxcab cab can now be customized to make it more individual and ergonomic for each user. The seat and backrest can also be inclined flexibly and a pneumatic lumbar support relieves strain on the back. A pleasant seat-heating function comes as standard to provide maximum driver comfort. What’s more, optional seat climate-control system can effectively heat and cool the seat at three levels. This extensive climate-control package made up of the climatecontrolled seat and the cab climate-control system that comes as standard guarantees comfortable working under any weather conditions and creates the perfect climate in the cab. With a little over one month to go until the show, planning for DEMO International is ramping up. This world class, one-of-a-kind industry event takes place September 22-24, 2016 in Maple Ridge, BC. DEMO International is the flagship event of the Canadian Woodlands Forum. It takes place every four years in a different location, and showcases the latest in forestry equipment, from stump to dump, in action and in the forest. Exhibitors, visitors and media attend from around the world, including the United States, South America and Europe. “We are very pleased to announce that the Honourable Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations has agreed to join the team as DEMO International 2016 Honourary Chair,” stated Peter Robichaud, Executive Director of the Canadian Woodlands Forum. “As a leader

of the forestry sector in British Columbia, we look forward to drawing on his experience and leadership to showcase British Columbia’s forest industry worldwide and inviting everyone to Vancouver.” The sheer size of the show is significant – with both static and active sites (featuring working equipment) surrounding a 3.2

kilometre loop of roadway, specially built for the show. To date, the site selection process has been extremely successful. The current list of exhibitors is now available on the show website. “At the moment, space for the show is about 90% sold,” said Mark Cusack, National Show Manager. “We have one final site selection meeting happening in late July, and we expect that the few remaining spaces will be quickly snapped up. This unique show is a big draw and Continued on page 7

New Landplane Attachment Expands Bobcat 3650 Utility Vehicle Offering Bobcat Company has expanded its utility vehicle attachment versatility with the new 62-inch landplane attachment, available on 2015 Model Year (MY) 3650 utility vehicles. The bi-directional, site preparation and landscaping attachment allows operators to work in both forward or reverse to easily break up hard ground or level high points. The new landplane helps UTV operators pulverize soil clods, sift soil to remove large rocks, peel sod and aerate soil for seeding. Options include a bolt-on screen to help break up soil clods, aerate and remove debris. In addition, an optional fold-down scarifier can be lowered to break up hard soil or veg-

etation, and may be retracted when not in use. Operators can easily attach and detach the attachment from a 3650 utility vehicle with the MultiAttachment X-Change™ (M.A.X.) system. It allows them to focus more on their job rather than valuable time spent changing attachments. Quick look: UTV landplane • Operating weight: 191 lb. • Width: 62 in. • Length: 40 in. • Working depth with scarifier: 2.5 in. • Bi-directional cutting edge • Approved for use with Model Year 15 3650 utility vehicles b

RT14R Tow & Show A Success For Terramac Terramac, a leading manufacturer of innovative rubber track crawler carriers, recently wrapped up its successful RT14R Tow & Show. Terramac partnered with its North American dealer network for the oneof-a-kind event to showcase its new 360-degree rotating unit to current customers and prospects throughout the US and Canada. During the eight-week tour, the RT14R made its debut at 9 dealer locations, one expo and several private end-user demos. Each event was attended by contractors from a variety of industries, including: pipeline, utility, railroad, municipal, paving, environmental, logging and general construction. Attendees were educated by Terramac representatives on the RT14R’s features and benefits, given complete walk-arounds of the new model and participated in live demonstrations. “The RT14R Tow & Show enabled us to introduce our rotating crawler carrier to hundreds of end-users within a short period of time,” said Matt Slater, Director of Sales at Terramac. “Experienced operators expressed enthusiasm for having a rotating carrier available to the market, while others were intrigued by RT14R’s additional capabilities and innovative design.” “We took full advantage of the RT14R Tow & Show by hosting three events for our customers,” explained Mike Lester, Vice President at Groff Tractor. “Dozens of end users showed up at each event, eager to see the new RT14R in action. Contractors from numerous industries were instantly enthralled by the unit’s capabilities and have already begun planning for how they intend to incorporate Terramac’s RT14R on upcoming projects.” Furthermore, attendees were impressed by the RT14R’s durability, power and technological advancements and found the model’s 360-degree rotating upper frame beneficial for reducing cycle times in various applications. “The time saved adds up quickly when you factor in how many

The 40,000-lb. machine is also powered by a QSL9.0 320-hp Tier 4 Final Cummins diesel engine to boost jobsite productivity while remaining highly fuel efficient. And, its minimal 7.9-psi ground pressure while fully-loaded enables it to conquer soft or wet ground conditions and mountainous terrain. The unit will also provide users with increased safety and easy maintenance. The RT14R boasts full cab visibility and eliminates the time operators spend in reverse, enhancing jobsite safety. Downtime is reduced with easy access to maintenance checks and track wear is significantly less as the unit can spin, resulting in reduced expenses for repairs. b

loads are being hauled on a daily basis,” said Jesse Whittaker, Terramac Regional Sales Manager. “Users at the tow and show events loaded and unloaded the unit at various dumping angles to experience its benefits firsthand. Discussions about rentals and purchases are underway which proves the RT14R is in high demand.” Manufactured in the USA, the RT14R is made entirely of premium components. Built with a rotating upper frame, the Terramac RT14R can carry and dump up to 28,000-lb. of material at any position, allowing it to offload materials faster than a standard straight frame unit. Sandvik Mining And Rock Technology Showcased Next Generation Mining Equipment And Services At Minexpo Sandvik introduced innovative new products and services that help customers to improve safety and productivity even further, with emphasis on total cost of ownership, scalable automation packages, availability of service and parts and inherent product safety. At MINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2016, Sandvik showcased the latest in its portfolio of innovative equipment and services, ranging from a single drill bit to mine automation. Sandvik offers a wide range of automation solutions that customers can apply right now in order to maximize the full potential of their mine site while significantly improving safety. Depending on customer requirements, we can provide AutoMine for autonomous solutions and OptiMine for information

management - or a combination of these two - all resulting in improved safety and productivity. Because it’s automation by miners, for miners, each solution is tailored to realistic conditions and needs, both in surface operations and underground. 3D scanning was one of several new and innovative features available in the automation offering. It automatically scans overbreak and underbreak to save valuable time during the drilling cycle, helping customers develop more meters every month. This was an opportunity to discover more about the benefits of 3D scanning at the show. At MINExpo Sandvik launched a number of drill rigs, including its latest addition to the DD422 series. Sandvik DD422iE uses electric battery power instead of a diesel engine, elimi-

nating emissions during tramming. The patented electric driveline system on our latest automated mining jumbo enables battery recharging during drilling. Sandvik DD422iE burns less fuel, also generating less heat and noise than conventional drivelines. The result is safer, healthier and more productive development drilling. There are many other new and innovative solutions on Sandvik DD422iE designed to increase productivity and simplify maintenance, to help ensure maximum rig availability. There is growing awareness of the potential health impacts of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and other underground engine emissions which often dictate high mine ventilation costs. This extends beyond drilling to other underground equipment. MINRENTALS  SALES  SERVICE

and features forward-thinking design and technology for bulk mining operations. Coupled with the patented Sandvik Compressor Management System fuel consumption can be improved by up to 25 percent. Having developed and supplied productive rock tools for more than 100 years, Sandvik continues to reinvent drill bit design. The newly-introduced top center drill bits, incorporating the most significant upgrade to face drilling bits in decades, is one of the Sandvik highlights at MINExpo. The new design features a so-called “raised front“, el-

evating two or three front buttons – depending on diameter size – a few millimeters above the gauge buttons located on the periphery of the bit. Additionally, the front buttons are set at a slight angle relative to the symmetric axis of the bit. The raised front creates a slightly recessed hole bottom pattern that alters the rock-breaking action in order to achieve improved performance. This, together with a new cemented carbide grade GC80, which combines toughness with a softer center, further exContinued on page 13

Front Page Story

Crushing It For 50 Years In 2016 Powerscreen, one of the world’s leading providers of mobile crushing and screening equipment, marks half a century of serving the crushing and screening industry around the world.

E

stablished in 1966, Powerscreen has achieved its fivedecade legacy through industry leadership, customer input and innovation. Powerscreen was founded in 1966 under the name of Ulster Plant in Country Tyrone, Northern Ireland and today that is where the research, development and manufacturing of products continue. By the 1970’s the Powerscreen name was born. When the founders set up Powerscreen in 1966 they pioneered the concept of mobile screen-

ing, taking the machines to the quarry face rather than the expensive process of moving the material to the machine. In 1969 Powerscreen exported their first machine to Sweden which cost £2.5k. Today Powerscreen has a true global presence, operating in worldwide scale in over 80 countries. In 1966 Powerscreen employed eight people, now that figure has risen to six hundred people producing a range of over thirty machines. Powerscreen started out from mobile machines

in a sand pit to industry leading machine designs now serving quarry, mining, C&D and recycling industries globally. Powerscreen not only pioneered the mobile machine concept but also set new standards for many products and technologies that have become widely adopted in the industry, including the Chieftain and Warrior ranges of mobile screens. In 2015 Powerscreen launched the Warrior 600 making the Warriors the most comprehensive range of mobile scalping units in the industry. “From Ulster Plant to serving customers around the world today, Powerscreen is the story of teamwork. Our customers have trusted us and helped us to build and define the industry, as well as creating ways for people to work safely. It is through teamwork that we will continue to find new solutions and opportunities” said Colin Clements, Powerscreen Product Line Director. In the last 50 years, Powerscreen has gone above and beyond in its product development efforts, focusing on what customers need to be successful in their industries and applications — Powerscreen innovations are changing the market and setting the industry standard for quality, reliability and safety in crushing and screening equipment. Key to the success of the Powerscreen brand is the global distribution network, there are over

Screen Machine Celebrates 50th Anniversary; Debuts 2 New Machines When it’s time to celebrate a 50th Anniversary, you do it in a BIG way. At Screen Machine, that means debuting about 75 tons of new machinery and welcoming nearly 700 guests for the day. On Thursday, June 23, Screen Machine invited dealers, suppliers, local, state and federal officials, families of employees and other special guests to its 125,000-square foot facility in Etna, Ohio. It was a day to celebrate a great American success story, and to look ahead to a bright future. “Fifty years is a long time,” said President Steve Cohen. “Screen Machine Industries not only survived but prospered through many recessions and wars. A business must adjust to survive.” In testament to the company’s plans to not only survive, but thrive, in the years to come, Screen Machine debuted two new machines at the 50th An-

these two new machines, 50th Anniversary attendees enjoyed factory tours led by Screen Machine engineers, were able to “drive a Screen Machine” scalper, had a chance to run a hoist, could visit the I Make America interactive game and had an opportunity to view a crushing and screening demonstration. A barbeque lunch also was provided. During a brief lunchtime presentation, Screen Machine Founder Bernard Cohen recalled that his accountant told him 50 years ago that nine out of 10 business failed in their first three years. “I wonder what he would say today about our company,” said Mr. Cohen. Screen Machine is a leading manufacturer of crushing and screening equipment, trommels and conveyors. Screen Machine products are renowned for the rugged reliability, with all equipment manufactured in our Etna, Ohio facility. Screen Machine has seven design patents, one key reason its machines lead the industry in innovation and productivity. b

niversary Celebration: • 4043TR Recirculating Impact Crusher – Featuring a two-deck screen fed directly from the crusher, the 4043TR delivers sized product directly from the fines (front) conveyor. Meanwhile a return overs conveyor delivers larger product back to the crusher hopper. • 514TS3 Spyder – A tripledeck screen that delivers up to four products simultaneously – fines, small mids, large mids and overs. “These machines are all about efficiency,” said Doug Cohen, Vice President of Operations. “The 4043TR allows the operator to produce crushed and sized product from a single machine. The return conveyor ensures the product keeps recirculating until it is reduced to the desired size. The 514TS3 adds an additional deck to our midpriced screening plant.” In addition to seeing Source: Screen Machines

New Configuration Options For The Arion 400 High-horse-power tractor technology now also available for the ARION 400 model range. Le Mans/Harsewinkel, June 2016. As of now, tractors in the CLAAS ARION 400 model range will be available with valuable technical solutions previously only available in CLAAS high-horse-power tractors. These include the proven HEXASHIFT transmission, CSM headland management and TELEMATICS. The newly developed dynamic steering system is also available as an additional option for ARION 400 tractors. The ARION 400 models are ideal universal tractors for use with any operation thanks to their compact design and an engine range from 90 to 140 HP. With the expanded variety of configurations, farmers will now be able to undertake tasks such as soil cultivation, forage work, transport or using a front loader with even greater ease. Optimized work solution with HEXASHIFT transmission and CSM headland management Two transmission variants are now available for ARION 460 to 430 models: the existing QUADRISHIFT and now the HEXASHIFT transmission. The HEXASHIFT transmission can be used on the road at a lower engine rpm with four automated ranges and six power-shift stages. This means less driving

noise for the driver and a lower diesel consumption. The six power-shift stages allow for a large gear overlap, so that the optimum rpm and driving speed can be selected for each application. All 24 gears can be conveniently changed using the multifunctional lever, without having to use the clutch pedal. The driver also has the option to completely leave the tractor to automatically change gear by selecting the HEXACTIV power-shift mode. Another newly released option for the ARION 400 model range is the proven CSM headland management system (CLAAS SEQUENCE MANAGEMENT), which is available with CIS colour display. Several tractor functions can be saved as operating sequences with this system, such as electronic control units, power lift, engine rpm and p.t.o. shaft. The operation is very simple and relieves the workload on the driver, especially when it comes to complex driving manoeuvres, which usually require numerous operating steps. A total of 4 headland sequences with up to 200 steps can be saved, which can be activated using the CSM operating panel in the right side console or the multifunction lever. A steering system that thinks for you Even the newly developed dynamic steering system provides relief for many tractor operations,

as it allows the driver to change the number of steering wheel rotations for the same steering lock angle at the touch of a button and thus adapt it to the specific task. From stop to stop, the number of steering wheel rotations can be reduced from 4.5 when deactivated, to only one to three rotations. This makes handling significantly easier, especially with steeringintensive work such as when using a front-loader or at a headland. The driver can choose between three different modes for dynamic steering using the CIS colour display. Approximately 90 per cent of all work can be executed with a steering angle dependent mode, where the steering automatically accelerates the stronger the turn. In the speed-dependent mode, the steering transmission is automatically reduced as the tractor speed increases above 10 km/h. Using the third mode; the steering transmission is manually adjusted independent of the speed or steering angle lock. The activation of the dynamic steering system is quick and easy via a button in the right side console. Everything under control with TELEMATICS The CLAAS TELEMATICS system is another valuable feature present in CLAAS highhorsepower tractors and harvesting machines that is now available for ARION 400 tractors. TELEMATICS records all the central machine data and positions for each application. Ongoing work can be monitored Continued on page 15

Liugong Introduces New Dressta S-Series Dozers To North America

9S, launched in Europe at BAUMA Munich in April, are powered by environmentally-friendly QSF 3.8 Tier 4 final Turbo-charged Cummins engines, meeting U.S. EPA emission regulations and delivering 94 hp (70kW) and 113 hp (84kW) respectively. They are equipped with Rexroth dual path hydrostatic drive systems that transmit full power to both tracks in all conditions to ensure smooth speed changes, pivot turns and counter rotation. The machines feature a strong six-way Cframe complemented by a robust undercarriage that is available in two options – the standard LT (long-track) version for better stability during driving and leveling and the LGP (low ground pressure) version for use in swampy or muddy terrain. The S-Series dozers are available with integrated technology options of Trimble Basic, Trimble Ready and full Trimble 3D control systems. b

LiuGong North America, a wholly owned subsidiary of LiuGong Machinery based in Liuzhou, China, introduced the new Dressta TD-8S and TD-9S dozers to North American construction equipment dealers at a recent event in Houston. Dressta is headquartered in Stalowa Wola, Poland, and is the sales, marketing and after-sales and service division of LiuGong Dressta Machinery Sp. Z o.o. The dealers converged in Houston for an indepth look at LiuGong and Dressta operations and, of course, the opportunity to see the dozers in action. Guangxi LiuGong and LiuGong N.A. executives provided a company overview and corporate perspective while Dressta’s director of marketing and dealer development and technical product manager showcased the equipment’s features and benefits. One of the heavy

equipment owner and operators who was tapped by Dressta to provide input during the design and development phase of the dozers demoed the equipment at the event. “The new S-Series dozers represent a real reinvigoration of the Dressta brand in North America,” said Marcus Menough, director of sales and marketing for LiuGong N.A. “They are industry competitive machines specified for today’s performance and operator standards with all features, technical and environmental requirements.” Dealers agreed. “These are very welldesigned, strong and robust machines,” said Pete Franssen, co-owner of Seattle-based Jet City Equipment, who attended the event. “My criteria for selling a machine is if I would buy one myself. In this case, I would.” The TD-8S and TD- Source: LiuGong

Sarens Enlists Two Terex AC 700 Cranes For A Heavy Tandem Lift Recently, international steel construction company, Iemants, constructed an offshore oil module for Fabricom at the company’s Hoboken facility in Antwerp, Belgium. These massive modules, critical

for the oil and gas production process, range in sizes reaching 25 m high, 30 m wide and 40 m long and weigh up to 2,200 tonnes. Even with a full complement of equipment at Iemants’ disposal, oc-

casionally during module construction it is necessary to bring in heavy lifting specialists to safely pick especially heavy pieces and place them on to the module platform. When the time came to

lift and mount on top of the module a large spreader bar used to perform offshore lifting, Iemants worked with its lifting partner, The Sarens Group, to develop the most cost-effective and efficient lifting solution.

The spreader bar measured 13.5 m long, 5 m wide, and 6 m high and weighed 145 t. It had to be lifted from ground level to a placement height of 32 m, and the crane would have to work at a maximum 24-m radius during the lift. “We considered a number of options from using a single crawler crane to performing a tandem lift using two all-terrain cranes,” says Erik Van der Elst, Key Account Manager for Sarens.

August 2016 The advantage of the single crane option would have been that it required only one crane and crew to be mobilized. However, a crawler crane would require multiple days and more than 20 loads to transport the crane components necessary to configure it to meet 145-t lift capacity at a 24-m radius. “It would need at least 10 days to complete the entire project from mobilization to completing the lift with the single crane option,” says Van der Elst. This was too long and costly for the module lift project. Sarens’ project managers focused on a more efficient, dual crane option, using the 700-t capacity class Terex® AC 700 allterrain crane. To meet required lifting capacity and working radius, while minimizing loads to improve mobilization efficiency, planners went with a 20.5m main boom option, using a 4-m variable adapter to connect the 30-m luffing fly jib to the telescopic boom. “In this configuration, each AC 700 crane offers 86.5 t capacity at the 24 m radius, ample capacity to safely lift the 145-t spreader bar,” says Michael Klein, Product Marketing Manager for Terex and Demag All Terrain Cranes. Even though this option required two cranes to be mobilized, it offered significant time and money savings. The nine-axle AC 700 all-terrain crane is quickly driven to the jobsite with its complete 60-m main Continued on page 17

telescoping boom installed, while meeting 12-tonne per-axle load limits to reduce the number of loads required for transport. Even using the two cranes, this option would cut the number of loads approximately in half compared to mobilizing a crawler crane. “We calculated a week’s time savings by using the two Terex all terrain cranes, which represented significant labor and cost savings for our customer,” explains Van der Elst. This is critical for

position for lifting. Within a day, Sarens’ four-person work crew transported the first all-terrain crane to the jobsite, rigged it with 160 t of counterweight and the 30-m luffing fly jib, and had it ready for the lifting project. On day two, the crane went to work lifting and positioning supporting equipment in preparation for placement of the spreader bar. “The first crane on site placed the lifting supports, rigging for the platform and a radar mast,” mentions Van der Elst. “At the same time, we moved our second crane to the jobsite and had a different fourperson crew prepare and position that AC 700 for the spreader bar lift.” The morning of day three both cranes were in position for completing the critical lift. To avoid the potential of weight overload on one of the cranes, Sarens’ lift plan included positioning a 160-t capacity swivel beam in between the spreader bar and cranes’ hook blocks. “This provided perfect weight distribution of the load between the two cranes,” says Van der Elst. To start the spreader bar lift, the two crane booms worked at a 22-m radius, and, as the lift progressed, the boom radius decreased to 17 m as the two cranes swiveled the load into position. While placing the spreader bar atop the module, both cranes were operating at a 24-m radius, and the two booms were less than a couple of meters apart. “The responsive controls of the AC 700 cranes give our operators very precise movements of the boom and load, which allows us to confidently complete intricate tandem lifts like this,” offers Van der Elst. With the lift complete, both four-person crews derigged their respective AC 700 cranes, and the lifting equipment convoy traveled back to Sarens’ Wolvertem yard. In just three days, the dual crane option safely and efficiently placed the spreader bar plus supporting equipment onto the oil module, seven days faster than what was estimated for the single crane option. More importantly, going with a tandem approach saved Sarens’ customer money. b Source: Terex

This award honours cities fuelling growth and innovation. The recognition program by Freightliner Trucks came after an economic data review revealed a compelling relationship between investments in work trucks and thriving economies. Seattle-Tacoma’s strong work truck presence indicates substantial employment in construction and manufacturing which helped place the cities in the top 20% in North America for contribution to gross domestic product. Investments in projects such as the $470 million-dollar Seattle-Tacoma International Airport renovation, WSDOT’s I-5 overhaul, and Port of Seattle’s expanded international arrivals facility demonstrate why Seattle-Tacoma will receive this award. “It’s an honour for our city to be awarded the ‘Hardest Working Cities’ title,” said Alex Bernasconi, general manager, Valley

“This recognition program is a great way to celebrate the people working behind their cities growth,” said Mary Aufdemberg, director of product marketing, Daimler Trucks North America. “It’s important to acknowledge cities like Seattle and Tacoma because it represents our economies moving forward.” To find the Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities, approximately 400 metropolitan census areas in the United States and Canada in 11 different data categories were reviewed. The data categories ranged from impact on overall gross domestic product to growth in employment to the number of jobs in key industry sectors including construction, manufacturing and logistics. Since the launch of the program last year, 8 cities across North America have been awarded the title: Dallas, Edmonton, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York City, Salt Lake City, and Toronto. Freightliner. “The area’s major construction projects really illustrate our dedication to growth. We’re a city that’s not afraid to get our hands dirty!” As part of Seattle-Tacoma’s recognition, a formal award presentation will be held Thursday, August 4 at Noon at Valley Freightliner Pacific with Senator Pam Roach. National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drivers, John Force and Matt Hagan, will also make a special appearance at the event. Prior to the award presentation, Freightliner will make several surprise gift and food deliveries at work sites around the area to thank crews for their contributions to Seattle-Tacoma. Previous work site visits have included: major road construction projects, public works garages, and refuse facilities. To date, Freightliner has visited 20 worksites and thanked close to 1,000 workers across 8 cities. Source: Freightliner

Truck Driver Shortage Accelerating The shortage of professional truck drivers in the Canadian for-hire trucking industry is escalating more rapidly than industry analysts previously thought, according to a new study prepared for the Canadian Trucking Alliance. The new study – Understanding the Truck Driver Supply and Demand Gap – was conducted by transportation consultants, CPCS. It’s an update to CTA’s 2011 landmark report of the same name, which predicted a driver gap of up to 33,000 drivers by 2020. The new study’s base case forecast calls for a shortage of 34,000 drivers by 2024 – reflecting an increase in demand of 25,000 and a decrease in supply of 9,000. The shortage could increase to 48,000 drivers based on plausible combinations of different trends that could affect industry demand, labour productivity and occupational attractiveness. By province, in absolute terms, demand for drivers is expected to grow the most in Ontario, followed by British Columbia. The expected gap, again in

absolute terms, between driver demand and supply is forecast to be highest in Ontario and Quebec. David Bradley, president and CEO of the CTA says the study “should be a wake-up call and reminder to everyone – carriers, shippers and governments – that while the current lackluster economic activity may be taking some of the edge off the driver shortage in the immediate-term, the underlying trend points to a long-term chronic shortage of truck drivers.” “When you consider that almost everything that people consume on a daily basis, or that serve as inputs into the production process, is shipped by truck, the economic implications of a driver shortage are potentially immense,” he said. The industry is at the precipice of what the study calls a “demographic cliff.” It is estimated there were nearly 169,000 drivers employed in the for-hire sector of the industry in 2014. However, the average age of the drivers continues to increase and

is doing so more rapidly than the Canadian labour force in general. The study estimates that the average truck driver age is expected to eclipse 49 years old by 2024 – up from 47.1 years in 2014 and 44.1 years in 2006. There are large numbers of drivers in their 50s and 60s – and about 17,000 drivers between 60 and 65 years of age. According to the study, both the driver population and the labour force in general have a glut of workers in the 45 to 54 year old age cohort, reflecting the impact of the boomer generation. In addition, there is a glut of workers in the 25 to 34 year-old age bracket in the labour force as a whole – the socalled echo generation (the children of the boomers). There is no comparable representation of the echo generation among the truck driver population. The study authors say the industry has been unsuccessful in attracting anywhere near a proportionate share of workers from the echo generation. “As the ratio of younger to older workers continues to increase for the labour

force as a whole, it is clear that the trucking industry will have to reverse this trend, and fast.” Furthermore, the share of young drivers in the occupation has been decreasing over time. Between 2006 and 2011, drivers between 25 to 34 years-old dropped from 18% to below 15%, while the share of drivers in the 55 to 64 year-old cohort (most of who will retire over the next decade) increased from 17% to 22%. Immigrants, meanwhile, make up about 20% (57,000 drivers) of the truck driver population. However, this percentage is smaller than it is for the Canadian workforce. Nonpermanent residents make up a very small share of the driver population, at 0.5%, compared to the workforce as a whole at 1.1%. Ninety-seven percent of all truck drivers are male, compared to 52% of all employees in all occupations. The deepening shortage is occurring despite the fact the study characterizes the occupation as “reasonably well-paying” – citing a CTA survey conducted in 2014 which found that the

Page 19

average hourly wage rate for tractor-trailer drivers in Canada was nearly $23 – higher than the national average for all occupations. The trade-off, however, is that long-haul truck drivers – where the shortage is felt most acutely – are required

to work long, unpredictable hours and spend a lot of time away from home in order to earn their wages. This is challenging for the industry to fill many of these positions. Owner-operator drivContinued on page 20

Doosan Serves As Patron Of The Open 2016 Onsite marketing activities include exhibits and branding bus operations. Effective brand building via TV coverage, The Open’s official site and social media channels. On July 7, 2016, Doosan Chairman Jeongwon Park announced the company’s continued role as an official patron of The Open Championship (also known as the British Open) for 2016, as well as a wide array of related online and offline branding campaigns to be carried out in the United Kingdom and around the world. The Open is one of the four major championships in men’s professional golf. This year, The Open will be played at Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland, from July 14 to 17. During the tournament, Doosan will install an exhibition stand at the event venue and

the Doosan logo gained 117,171 seconds of brand exposure. Brand building through the internet and social media turned out to be especially effective last year. The Doosan logo placed on the lower end of The Open’s official site attracted about 46.9 million views. The “Doosan Shot of the Day” videos, featuring the most memorable shot of each day captured during the tournament period, were viewed by more than 32,400 people on the tournament’s official site and about 860,000 people via its official Twitter and Facebook pages. To help nurture young talented golfers, Doosan has invited two golf prodigies each from the U.K. and Korea, and will host a friendly match at Royal Troon Golf Club on the day following the tournament. After signing the first sponsorship agreement in 2010, Doosan signed a five-year extension with The Royal & Ancient Golf Club (The R&A) until 2019. b

promote Doosan’s main businesses — including power plants, desalination plants, fuel cells and construction equipment — to the visitors. The company also plans to increase Doosan’s brand awareness via “branding buses” featuring the Doosan brand identity inside and around the venue. Doosan’s sponsorship of The Open has proved to be highly effective in raising its brand awareness. Repucom, an independent brand analysis and research agency, assessed the monetary value of the exposure achieved by Doosan’s on-site signage on the teeing ground and other advertising via worldwide television coverage at around $11.3 million (8.5 million pounds) every year. Last year, The Open was broadcast by 103 broadcasters to 505 million households worldwide. Meanwhile, Source: Doosan

Impact Block To Enhance Safety In Tree Felling Applications Tree surgeons and other professionals from the arboriculture industry have embraced a new technology that measures the shock load and weight of branches as they are cut during felling or maintenance. The Impact Block load cell is manufactured in partnership with tree safety equipment pioneer DMM and contains electronics and software from force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cell equipment specialist Straight-

point. A tree maintenance company in the sector commissioned the product. The industry has acknowledged that the Impact Block can fill gaps in knowledge about the forces put through rigging equipment and the weight of loads as they are cut away from trees. It can become as important as a training device as it is a practical onsite tool for the sector. Unlike crane-related or other typical rigging scenarios, in tree applications professionals do not al-

ways have an anchor point above the lifting point. If only the stem and canopy of a spruce tree remains, for example, a rope break may have to be attached to the bottom of the tree from where a rope and pulley will connect to the piece being cut. As cuts are made, wood is essentially thrown into the rigging from above. This is in stark contrast to crane lifts, where the hook is typically positioned directly above the mass of the load being rigged and lifted. In the lifting and material handling business, testing is also commonplace but this is frequently impossible in the tree sector because of logistics and the damage such tests could cause to soil and surrounding areas, which in themselves are of critical importance to the health of the tree and subsequent maintenance operations. The aesthetic curves of

the Impact Block combine with strength and durability to ensure a rope-friendly surface. Utilising wireless dynamic load monitoring electronics and strain gauge technology, real time data can be displayed on a handheld controller, tablet or laptop at speeds up to 200Hz. importantly, this eliminates the estimation work that often goes into arborist applications. The UK’s Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) was involved in a research programme in 2008, which opened many people’s eyes to the extent of the forces generated and the requirement to more scientifically and accurately research such activity. The launch of the Impact Block places a yardstick in the progress of the sector’s technological advancement and many are campaigning for its widespread use. One arborist said: “To be able to demonstrate real time shock load data to a group of students is incredibly powerful. Furthermore, we can use the technology to delve deeper into dynamic load situations by researching where forces on the anchor point are at their greatest, while inves-

Page 23 we can’t understand the safety factors. We frequently work in close proximity to other trees, buildings and infrastructure. The consequences of a lack of understanding about the loads and the forces they place on rigging equipment can be catastrophic if not researched extensively.” It is anticipated that the Impact Block will be of particular interest to tree professionals in North America, where utilities equipment and power lines are more commonly above ground. Uptake is also expected from large contractors and those engaged in arborist-related training. Straightpoint director David Ayling said: “The technology built into the impact block is based on technology that has proven its accuracy and durability in a myriad of demanding applications in the lifting and other industries, largely based on the blueprint of our most popular product, the Radiolink plus load cell. The conception of the Impact Block again demonstrates our ability to apply our force measurement expertise to industries looking to use their own stateof-the-art hardware and equipment to raise safety levels and improve best practice. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with the tree maintenance sector.” b

tigating what is happening to the rigging before and after that moment.” He added: “We need to demonstrate these numbers to existing arborist professionals and those new to our industry. Unless we understand the forces, Source: BridgerHowes
