Ditch Doctor Puts New Spin On Traditional Process

Harry Sullivan/Truro Daily News

By Harry Sullivan, hsullivan@trurodaily.com, Twitter: @tdnharry

Adam and Carole Fisher of Glenholme are in the process of trying to market their Ditch Doctor, a piece of machinery that attaches to an excavator as a more efficient and environmentally friendly way of dredging out ditches. When Adam Fisher was a youngster helping his father clean out drainage ditches, he’d wonder why there wasn’t a more efficient process. The traditional method then, as now, is to clean out the ditch with an excavator and truck the mate-

rial away. For highway ditches, the bare earth left behind would then have to be replanted to prevent erosion issues. And at some point later, the process would all have to be repeated. “It didn’t make sense to me, we didn’t have something to do a specific job,” the Glenholme businessman said, of his thoughts 30 years ago. Ditching and dredging became Fisher’s profession and despite continuing to operate in the traditional

fashion, the prospect of creating a better way has stayed. In 2000, after much trial and error, he came up with a prototype for a rotary machine, called the Ditch Doctor, which attaches to the arm of an excavator. As the excavator moves parallel to the ditch, the machine, which has a sort of grinding wheel encased in a housing, spins up the material and blows it out, distributing it along the embankment. “The most important thing, I guess, is that it maintains all the vegetation on slopes,” Fisher said, “especially in sandy areas where it takes longer for vegetation to grow.” “So it’s a faster, more cost effective way of cleaning out, maintaining and restoring an existing ditch,” added his wife and business partner Carole. “And it’s friendly to the environment because you’re not needing as much equipment as the traditional excavator bucket method.” Because there is nothing on the market comparable to his creation,

Hiroshi “Rocky” Morita, is named Vice President Manufacturing, and will be based out of the Kobelco North American production facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. “This consolidation will harness the strength of both businesses to build our capabilities as a whole,” says Naoto Suzuki. “It will further enhance our service functions, strengthen our product development capabilities, and reinforce our foundation in the North American market. We are very excited about the new opportunities the merger will provide Kobelco Construction Machinery U.S.A. and we look forward to continuing our growth in this market.” b

Kobelco Construction Machinery U.S.A. and Kobelco Cranes North America announce plans to merge under Kobelco Construction Machinery U.S.A., effective January 1, 2017. The union of these subsidiaries in the North American market takes place following the Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. global construction machinery excavators and cranes merger that was announced in April 2016. Kobelco Construction Machinery U.S.A and Kobelco Cranes North America have each made several advancements to continue their momentum of growth and commitment to the North American market. By merging the two businesses, the company will take a leap forward as a comprehensive construc-

tion machinery manufacturer that provides superior product development, manufacturing capabilities, and enhanced sales support in the U.S.A. The newly combined organization will be represented by two strong dealer networks that are dedicated to delivering the best products, parts, and services in the industry for both the excavator and the crane businesses. Both dealer networks will continue as independent networks serving their respective industries. Headquartered in Katy, Texas, Kobelco Construction Machinery U.S.A. will be led by new President and CEO, Naoto Suzuki and will be comprised of three independent divisions – excavator, crane, and manufacturing. What I Didn’t Know About Truck Drivers By Karen Hazan I’ve worked in the office at Canada Cartage for a few years now but recently decided to take our truck driver orientation/training program to gain some more insight into Canada Cartage and our various safety procedures and requirements. Monday morning, I showed up at 6:30 a.m., pen and paper in hand, wearing my safety boots, eager to start the orientation training to cover some basics that all our drivers need to go through when operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). After brief introductions, we got started and for three days straight, we listened intently, learned, and tested our knowledge with regular quizzes. The training was extensive, informative, and exhausting. Luckily, we had knowledgeable and engaging

trainers that kept it interesting. Our training included: • Hours of Service (HOS) Regulations and Driver Daily Log • Carrier Profile System (CVOR) • Accident/Injury Reporting, Accident Review Committee • Slips, Trips and Falls & 3 point contact • Safe Lifting and Carrying • Site Orientation (Truck & Trailer Yard, Garage, Central Dispatch) • Decision Driving • Transportation of Dangerous Goods • Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) • Pre-Trip Inspection Requirements in classroom and practical • Wheel Re-torque Policy • Safe Lift Gate • Manual Pump Truck Operation

At the end of each long day, I sat there wondering how difficult it would be to know and practice this stuff every single day. Working through the HOS and daily driver log on the first morning was enough to make my head spin. But, the drivers took it all in stride. Truck drivers work hard – very hard. They assume risk and liability when getting behind the wheel every single day. They need to track their hours to ensure they are compliant with HOS regulations and ensure their trucks and trailers are properly inspected, even when it’s -40 °C outside. If not, they can be fined – or worse. I would argue that truck drivers are some of the best drivers on the road. Imagine driving a vehicle that weighs up to 140,000 lbs! Transports have several blind spots, can take up to two football fields to come to a complete stop, and can roll fairly easily if the content of the trailer shifts. Throw in some bad Continued on page 7

The Difference Is Electrifying The mining industry has been disrupted. New, less fossil-fuel dependent technologies built into Sandvik DD422iE will help you drive down production costs while reducing environmental impact. With zero emissions during tramming and better drilling productivity, the new, industry-first Sandvik DD422iE is full of the latest features that give you a real competitive advantage. Using the onboard battery, Sandvik DD422iE produces zero emissions while tramming, improving health and safety for underground workers. By cutting down on diesel you can potentially even reduce the need for

MORE POWER. LESS FUEL. With KOBELCO excavators, you get best-in-class fuel economy every time you fire up the engine – no matter how tough the job. With our latest Generation 10 machines, we’re taking that efficiency to a whole new level. These new machines now boast up to a 7% increase in work volume per hour while also providing up to a 10% increase in fuel efficiency in S-mode and an additional 6% in ECO- mode. Michelin Launches Its New XDR3 Earthmovers The new 40.00 R 57 and 53/80 R 63 Michelin XDR3 tires have been designed for rigid dump trucks operating in surface mines. One of the main challenges facing mine operators today is to reduce the cost per ton by improving operational efficiency, while still ensuring safety for all within the workplace, and thus increasing profitability. The new Michelin XDR3 responds to the needs of mine operators by incorporating three key innovations, which together increase tire life by a minimum of 10 per cent compared to its predecessor, the Michelin XDR 2. A revolutionary new tread pattern Compared with its predecessor this new tread pattern offers multiple benefits. It offers better endurance due to improved heat dissipa-

tion capabilities – 8°C cooler in the tread area. A greater volume of tread rubber is in contact with the ground which improves wear and ensures better load distribution throughout the contact patch due to a lower contact pressure. Finally, interlocking shoulder blocks resist excessive movement during cornering and further reduce tire wear.

Four innovative rubber compounds (MB4, MB, MC4, MC) An exclusive new mixing process ensures a more uniform composition of rubber compounds and a superior level of carbon black dispersion that increases wear resistance. Each unique compound offers specific performance characteristics adapted to site conditions and usage, from high wear resistance to high thermal capacity for speed. Source: Michelin

Corrosion isolating steel cables The high-strength steel cables used in the tire’s casing are 10 per cent stronger than in the XDR2 and are encapsulated in rubber to prevent the spread of corrosion within the casing, which extends the life of the tire. The Michelin XDR3 is also MEMS (1) ready. This means that it is possible to quickly and easily install state-of-the-art data sensors to capture and transmit temperature and pressure information in real time. Michelin’s R&D teams spent more than six years developing this new tire to ensure that it fully meets the expectations and needs of customers and during the extensive testing process more than 25 million kilometres were travelled, which is the equivalent of circling the earth 625 times. The 40.00 R57 Michelin XDR3 is now available, while the 53/80 R63 will be available starting January 2017. b

Simplify Snow Removal With The New JD Snow Utility V-Blade Attachments This winter, skid steers, compact track loaders or compact wheel loaders are capable of tackling even more projects on the job site with the John Deere Snow Utility V-Blades, the latest additions to the John Deere Worksite Pro attachment lineup. These attachments provide multifunctional versatility and are ideal for customers removing snow or performing

light dirt work on the road, trail or job site. The three new models (BV6, BV8 and BV9) offer increased flexibility, performance and productivity. Delivering four hydraulic angling positions — straight for making larger cuts, V-configuration for pushing through hardpack, scoop (both sides inward) for easy snow stacking and 30-degree right or

left positioning for accurately moving snow or dirt — the John Deere Snow Utility V-Blades offer a variety of standard features to properly and efficiently tackle snow or light-dirt projects on the job site. The Snow Utility VBlades feature an electrohydraulic (EH) valve for independent blade function that operators can control from the cab. A rubber cutting edge is also available for the blade to help prevent damage to decorative surfaces. Trip springs help protect the vehicle from sudden impacts with concealed obstacles and can be locked out for light grading and dirt work. “As many landscapers and contractors can tell you, winter weather doesn’t mean you have to close up shop,” said Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “Winter attachments, like the Snow Utility V-Blades, are great additions to make the most of your compact equipment investment year-round and expand your business through diversification.” Like all Worksite Pro attachments, the V-Blades

are optimized to work with John Deere E-Series and 313/315 Skid Steers, E-Series Compact Track Loaders (CTLs) and K-Series Compact Wheel Loaders. They’re also compatible with many competitive models. With the universal, selfcleaning Quik-Tatch easy attachment system found on all John Deere skid steers and CTLs, the machine can easily add and remove the snow blade in no time. They’re also compatible with many competitive models. To learn more, visit www.JohnDeere. com or contact your local John Deere dealer. Model Highlights • The BV8 V-blades are optimized to work with John Deere 318E, 320E, 326E, 328E and 332E Skid Steers; 319E, 323E, 329E and 333E CTLs; 204K, 244K, 304K and 324K Compact Wheel Loaders. • The BV9 V-blades are optimized to work with John Deere 318E, 320E, 326E, 328E and 332E Skid Steers; 319E, 323E, 329E and 333E CTLs; 204K, 244K, 304K and 324K Compact Wheel Loaders. b Source: John Deere

According to a recent survey of Independent Equipment Dealers Association (IEDA) members, the EPA’s Tier 4 mandates are driving up the demand of non-Tier 4, used construction equipment and predicts this trend will continue for the next several years. For many equipment categories, used equipment availability is outpacing demand, but for other categories, including excavators, backhoe loaders, wheel loaders, dump trucks dozers and compact equipment, IEDA members are seeing resale pricing increase by as much as 20 percent. Also, more than 50 percent of survey respondents noted that quality used equipment is getting harder to find. The IEDA membership base is comprised of equipment dealers from around the world specializing in used construction and mining equipment sales. Since the EPA implemented new standards more than two decades ago, the IEDA’s staff and members have kept a close eye to how used equipment availability and pricing would be affected by each new standard. “Our members buy and sell used equipment globally, which makes them well aware of market trends,” says Drew Van Brunt, IEDA President and Owner of Global Tractor Company in Colleyville, TX. “As a group, we make it a point to share trends we see in the market with each other, as well as with used equipment buyers and sellers. The current used equipment market is strong, but it will be affected by Tier 4 machines in the near future.” In this most recent survey, most members are still unsure how Tier 4 machines will hold their value when these models hit the used equipment market. Of the members surveyed, 37 percent believe Tier 4 machines will not retain their value as well as non-Tier 4 equipment, but many others believe Tier 4 machines will

the used equipment market; IEDA members predict that the market is 4-8 years away from being dominated by these newer machines. At that point, non-tier 4 machines will be harder to come by, and pricing on Tier 4 machines will become more steady. More information about the IEDA and its members, please visit www.iedagroup.com or contact IEDA Executive Director Kristen Williams at Kristen@ iedagroup.com. b

have better resale value because many projects demand the use of Tier 4 compliant equipment. If more construction projects demand the use of Tier 4 machines, the residual value of non-tier 4 machines will drop significantly. Currently, there are only a few Tier 4 machines in Source: IEDA

fabricators to mechanics and engineers — has become increasingly challenging, and is creating a number of pain points that span across manufacturing and distribution In an effort to help close the gap, Volvo partnered with SkillsUSA and Skills Canada — organizations dedicated to improving the quality of North America’s skilled workforce. To grow awareness of the issue, and to connect students with career opportunities, Volvo marked the 50th anniversary of its invention of the articulated hauler with a golden-painted hauler. The hauler is traveling throughout North America, stopping at Volvo dealerships and Skills events, introducing students to individuals who chose a career path in the construction industry and opening up communication. “By 2020, we expect there to be a 10-millionperson shortage in our skilled workforce,” said Peyton Holland, Executive Director for SkillsUSA North Carolina. “That’s what makes this partnership with Volvo Construction Equipment so tremendous — students get

how people developed their own career paths.” The hauler will be auctioned off in early 2017, with proceeds benefitting SkillsUSA and Skills Canada. The hauler’s last official tour stop will take place at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in March of 2017. Skills Gap: Facts to Know • Today’s tradesperson has an average age of 56, and 5 – 15 years until retirement • There are 10 million new skilled workers needed by 2020 • Today’s youth believe that being seen as a “professional” is most important, overruling concerns about pay, career growth or physical labor • A variety of causes are likely to blame for the technical skills gap — chief among them are failures in the technical education system, retiring baby boomers, and poor visibility and perception of vocational careers among youth • About 10,000 baby boomers will reach retirement age every day for the next 14 years • Over the next decade, it’s estimated that 2 million jobs will go unfulfilled. b Source: Volvo

consulted with residents, regulatory agencies, technical subject-matter experts, Indigenous Peoples, stakeholders, commercial businesses and future users of the project components. This engagement has resulted in a robust and stringent set of requirements that will be delivered by the eventual private-sector partner, with WDBA’s oversight. The following is a highlight of a few required project features that can be shared at this stage of the public-private partnership procurement process. As part of their responses to the RFP, Proponents will detail how they intend to deliver these, and other, project requirements. Construction Mitigation The Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) study was a comprehensive bi-national environmental study that identified requirements to mitigate potential negative impacts from a new crossing. These requirements are obligations that the private-sector partner must implement during the design construction and operation phases of the project as stipulated in the Crossing Agreement and in the contract that will be entered into between WDBA and the partner. WDBA is com-

mitted to minimizing disruptions to communities and the environment and will ensure the privatesector partner will implement steps to limit impacts to nearby residents, people travelling through the construction zone and nearby businesses. Community Benefits WDBA has mandated that a comprehensive Community Benefits Plan be formulated and delivered by the privatesector partner with stringent oversight by WDBA. Through consultation undertaken by WDBA and Michigan, residents, business owners and community leaders on both sides of the border have conveyed that local workforce and training strategies, construction impact and operation mitigation measures, and regional economic and community development opportunities are amongst the top priorities for communities. WDBA has listened and as part of their proposals, the Proponents will be charged with developing Community Benefits Plans that address these regional priorities. Aesthetics WDBA recognizes the permanent influence the Gordie Howe International Bridge will have on Windsor’s and Detroit’s skyline and its role as a

new gateway symbol for Canada and the United States. WDBA is looking to its Proponents to advance unique, impressive, inspiring and iconic bridge designs. Functionality for the commercial and passenger users of the bridge and entering the POEs is also a critical aspect of project design. WDBA expects designs for all four project components that demonstrate ease of use and balance functionality with aesthetic principles. Design and Technology WDBA’s vision is that this is the most instrumented, technologically advanced, border crossing and we are challenging the private sector to take up this vision in their designs. Significant attention is being given to ensuring the bridge meets and exceeds the needs of commercial users and that the project includes features that will contribute to the efficient and timely movement of drivers through the facility and toward their destinations. WDBA expects to integrate design elements to make it easier for trucks to cross such as: dedicated truck lanes on bridge and in the POEs; driver-friendly road lighting; safety design accommodations such as the ability to deal with truck breakdowns in a timely fashion with

minimum impact on traffic flow; and an onsite weather monitoring station allowing for advanced notification of unfavorable conditions. Tolling may include manual, automatic and electronic lanes. It is anticipated that E-manifest programs and other trusted traveller and trader programs will be in place on both the Canadian and US POEs to help make for an efficient crossing. The bridge and POEs will be equipped with “smart” technology. WDBA anticipates the use of intelligent video to monitor traffic and provide enhanced security features. A system with automated incident detection capabilities plus lane control and traveller information systems could be used to help ensure safe passage.
