Women In Trucking Association (WIT) and Freightliner Trucks announced three finalists for the 2017 Influential Woman in Trucking award which highlights the achievements of female role models and pioneers in the trucking industry. This is the seventh year for the award which was developed in 2010 as a way to honour female leaders and to attract and advance women within the trucking industry. Nominees included women from all over the industry in corporate, manufacturing, supplier, owner-operator, driver, and sales or dealership roles. Expanding the Class 8 premium vocational truck line-up, the International HX Series is now available in a 51 inch sleeper cab on both the HX520 and HX620 models. Hyundai Introduces HX130LCR Compact-Radius Excavator Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas introduced the Hyundai HX130LCR, the third compactradius excavator model in the company’s HX series product line. The 13.5-ton machine also is available in
a second standard configuration, the HX130LCRD, which includes a dozer blade. Hyundai announced the new excavator – its 15th HX series excavator model – at the International Con-
struction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE) in Louisville, Ky. The HX130LCR excavator is powered by a 73.6-hp (55-kW) Perkins 854F Tier 4 Final diesel engine. The LCR model has a standard operating weight of 29,750 lbs. (13,495 kg); while the LCRD model’s standard operating weight is 31,290 lbs. (14,195 kg). An advanced hydraulic system includes an innovative Boom Float mode for better grading control, Fine Swing mode for improved load control when swinging, and up to 13-percent faster cycle speeds than previous models. manual industry where injury and ill health are not uncommon, which is why Volvo CE promotes good health and well-being among all its employees. Last year, over 69,000 construction workers in Great Britain were suffering from an illness they believe was caused or made worse by work, and over 23 million days of work were lost as a result. Common illnesses are depression or anxiety and musculoskeletal disorders, as well as work-related injuries (source: 2015/2016 Health Place Statistics). So while that’s the bad news, the good news is that paying closer attention to our health and wellbeing can reduce the risk of becoming unwell, and even improve our productivity. Exercise helps us to retain a good level of physical health, reducing the risk of illness. It also releases endorphins – a natural stress-fighter – and increases energy. Memory and concentration levels are also elevated, as aerobic exercise boosts the size of the hippocampus – an
area in the brain that is involved in verbal memory and learning (University of British Columbia). Exercise also increases cognitive ability – especially important when operating heavy machinery. When sitting in the cab of a machine all day, we can fall into bad habits, particularly when it comes to our posture. Bad posture not only puts stress on our bodies muscles and ligaments, it can reduce the amount of oxygen we are able to take in, contributing to fatigue. Sitting up straight opens the lungs, allowing us to consume more oxygen, which fills our muscles and enhances our overall energy levels. Many machine cabs have been specially designed to promote good posture and enhance operator comfort. Exercise can also help to improve our posture and there are specific exercises that strengthen the muscles in our back and abdominals, such as sit ups, the plank, back extensions and upright row. Some exercises can even be done in the cab. Try engaging your core with some side crunches, or if there’s enough space, arm circles and arm raises. Whether it’s 15 minutes or 60 minutes of exercise, four or five times a week, we can all find the time to fit a workout into our routine. Exercising in the morning is a great way to start the day, it kick-starts the metabolism, can help us to sleep at night (says the National Sleep Foundation) and releases plenty of good hormones. In fact, it’s

any time of year. The $229.3 million contract to build the 120-km highway—the NWT’s largest infrastructure project— was awarded in early 2014 to a local company, EGTNorthwind Ltd. It’s a joint venture partnership between E. Gruben’s Transport Ltd. of Tuktoyaktuk and Northwind Industries of Inuvik, both 100 percent Inuvialuit-owned. The builders come with generations of northern construction experience. “My grandfather and my dad started the company here in the 1950s with dog teams,” says Merven Gruben, vice president of E. Gruben’s Transport and director of the EGT-Northwind partnership. It all started to come together about four years ago. “We had been lobbying for this road for years and years,” says Gruben, who was the mayor of Tuktoyaktuk for six years to 2013. The effort included videos and several trips to Ottawa. “We got the attention of the Prime Minister [Stephen Harper] and he came to Tuk,” he recalls. The entire length lies in permafrost, so planning took meticulous research, study and analysis. Every section of the route demanded close examination and investigation for its unique features, both above and below the surface. The highway passes through two distinct ecoregions that challenged the builders: the Mackenzie Delta and the Tuktoyaktuk Coastal Plain. The Mackenzie Delta ecoregion includes the southern twothirds of the Mackenzie River Delta and is mostly complex networks of lakes and interconnected channels. North and east of the Mackenzie Delta is the Tuktoyaktuk Coastal Plain. It includes the active portion of the delta as well as some uplands. It too is tricky for road building; being underlain by continuous permafrost with various forms of excess ice. Depth of the active layer (the portion that thaws seasonally) varies
from 30 to over 150 cm. So avoiding alteration of or damage to the permafrost was an overriding concern in developing the plan and undertaking construction. Traditionally, road building follows ‘cut and fill’ techniques—cutting into the higher parts of the terrain and filling the lower. With the ITH that couldn’t be done; it would mean slicing through protective layers of organics, exposing permafrost. Instead the design is fill only, sourcing gravel from borrow pits along the way. Geotextile fabric is placed under the fill along the highway’s entire length. “You are not allowed to disturb the permafrost; it will screw up your foundation,” explains Gruben. Construction was started from both ends to minimize overall build time. At the Tuktoyaktuk end, building started about 20 km south of the hamlet where an earlier road was already complete. Gruben says one of their biggest surprises was a lack of good gravel source material. Because construction
was done in winter, “it was all frozen of course.” They identified pits by eroded areas, then drilled boreholes to confirm suitability. “The really good material we could scrape but for the most part to haul that material we had to do a lot of blasting. With good patterns it worked out really well.” Most of the pits will be retained for ongoing maintenance over the years and for community gravel sources. The geotextile is an important but labour-intensive part of the operation. “We put the cloth down, placed the fill over it and built it at least a metre thick,” Gruben explains. “We had a lot of guys on it and along with the culverts it took quite a crew. We had probably 15 or 20 working on geotextiles at any given time.” Overall labour force peaked around 600; approximately 80 percent Aboriginal, from Yukon as well as NWT and northern Alberta. The Inuvialuit Administration maintained a keen eye ensuring wildlife and environmental sensitivities were monitored

and protected throughout construction. Progress is on schedule. As of late October, the team had 25 km left for final surfacing. “Then just grading, compacting and shaping, and over the next few days the boys will be putting the signs out and finishing the guardrails,” says Gruben. Remaining active equipment consisted of five graders, ten packers, one water truck, one excavator, ten clam-dumps, one loader and four bulldozers. Official opening will happen at both ends. Scheduled festivities include feasts, drum dancing, fireworks, ribbon-cutting, and more. Federal and territorial dignitaries will join in marking the historic day. “It is a huge Canadian project to connect from coast to coast to coast,” sums Gruben. “Once it’s connected it is going to be crazy. The Arctic Ocean will sell itself.” b

The facility in Lodi is located in California’s Central Valley, about 84 miles west of San Francisco and about 36 miles south of Sacramento. In terms of logistics, this allows Liebherr to respond to customer inquiries quicker and accelerate the distribution of parts and services in this region. “A lot of effort and
dedication went into preparing this location for success. The Lodi branch will tremendously improve our abilities to service and support our local customers in their respective time zone,” says Tobias Haemmerle, Divisional Director of Liebherr USA, Co. Crawler Cranes and Foundation Equipment Division. The opening of the Lodi, CA location and the joint venture with the Mobile and Crawler Cranes and the Crawler Cranes and Foundation Equipment Division allows Liebherr USA, Co. to support the company’s overall goal to strengthen customer support and equipment distribution across the United States. The new location held a small opening ceremony on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Liebherr USA, Co. Crawler Cranes and Foundation Equipment division in Lodi will offer a product range of crawler cranes, duty-cycle crawler cranes, piling and drilling rigs as well as attachments, such as rotary drives, hammers and vibrators. The Mobile and Crawler Cranes division will offer a wide range of mobile cranes with telescoping or lattice booms on wheeled or crawler-tracked undercarriages. These cranes are powerful, manoeuvrable and feature modern technology that satisfies combined road and off-road operating requirements on construction sites.
