Pulp & Paper Mill Combines Sennebogen Machines For Safety
transport Camille Dionne9 tRk Attachments .......... 9
October 2016
Mondi, the international packaging and paper company based near Prague, CZ, is operating three widely different models of Sennebogen log-handling equipment to support the same mill. In total, the Mondi log-handling fleet is comprised of five machines including 835, 825 and 735 models. Two stationary 835 electric material handlers are the centerpieces of the new log yard, feeding materials into the wood processing area. Two 825 M machines handle truck-loading requirements, while the 735 “pick & carry” unit moves and stacks wood between the yard’s storage areas. Mondi has operated one of its largest pulp and paper factories in Štˇetí, approximately 26.7 miles (40 km) north of Prague, since 1949. Log yard logistics were reorganized recently, and the Sennebogen machines formed the core of its new fleet. Site manager Tomáš Wojnar reports
With this focus on safety, there is no compromise on the bottom-line performance of the electric-drive. Mondi estimates that operating and energy costs are around 50% of the cost of diesel-powered machines in a direct comparison. Low maintenance costs and the ability to work without refueling are additional advantages. Mobile “pick & carry” concept provides support for loading Wojnar explains that the nimble 735 log-loader takes on a key role in keeping the mill’s loading station well fed. He calls the “pick & carry” concept “an impressive solution,” with its compact dimensions allowing the machine to maneuver quickly between the wood piles. It can pick and stack logs up to 37 ft. (11 m) high. b
that half of the operation’s logs are delivered by train, and loaded directly from the wagon into the wood processing area. The two Sennebogen 835s, powered by 215 HP (160 kW) electric motors, stand directly alongside the tracks. The stationary machines are mounted on a 20 ft. (6 m) high pylon with a total reach of 200 ft. (60 m). Safety plus savings thanks to the electric drive Worksite safety is the top priority at Mondi, which is apparent on the Sennebogen machines. Railings on all sides and walkways on the upper carriage protect Mondi personnel during servicing and maintenance. The Source: Sennebogen machine will not operate while the cab door is open. A telescopic escape ladder allows workers to exit the machine within seconds in the event of an emergency, and an acoustic warning system alerts the driver if anyone enters the working radius of the machine.

Terex AC 1000 All-Terrain Crane Installation At Altitude Of 1,600M
tEREx
The Terex AC 1000 allterrain crane was virtually predestined to erect large wind turbines. When it came to this particular project, however, Austrian crane service provider Prangl and its team were faced with a daunting challenge before the lift even started – it would first be necessary to take the nineaxle unit to “new heights,” as the corresponding Enercon-operated wind farm site was located on the ridge of the Pretul mountain in Styria, at an altitude of around 1,600 meters. A description of the route had already made it clear that getting to the work site would be no walk in the park: an altitude of 1,600 meters, slopes of up to 18 percent, and the whole trek made up of narrow and mostly unpaved winding roads, peppered with steep bumps and deep depressions. Even with these adverse conditions, The Prangl team, which was performing the job on behalf of Enercon, planned for the whole climb to take no more than two hours – two and a half tops. And this despite the fact that it was the first time Prangl was using this crane. Nevertheless, Prangl Site Manager Peter Glier was optimistic: “The AC 1000 is designed precisely for this kind of thing; it won’t have a problem getting there.” Perfect drive design The Prangl site manager’s confidence in the crane’s abilities was not unfounded: “Thanks to a sophisticated drive design in which every axle can be
steered, our nine-axle AC 1000 is more than a match for any extreme route. On top of this, every axle has its own independent suspension, meaning that the crane can easily handle tough bumps and depressions,” explains Terex Sales Manager Robert Puchner, who was present at the debut of Prangl’s new crane with a fellow team member in order to provide on-site support if necessary. This boosted the level of confidence at Prangl even further: “We know that we can depend on Terex Service one hundred percent at any time – they always have a solution ready for us.” Crane operator Heinz Schuller in particular was thrilled with the AC 1000 crane’s cross-country mobility and gradeability, which he got to experience first-hand as he drove the crane to the work site in a convoy with ten escort vehicles within one day: “Even driving the new crane on the freeway made me realize how impressive it is: despite its size, it has extraordinary straight-line stability and excellent handling performance. And the suspension is tuned perfectly.” But the moment of truth would come only until the last few kilometers, when driving up the mountain. In addition to the numerous bumps and depressions, the winding roads also proved to be a unique challenge: two of the passes were so narrow that it was only possible to drive through them in reverse. The Prangl team, which
has a wealth of experience with mountain projects to fall back on, used a triedand-true technique to deal with this: “Whenever we need to cross a stretch like that, we first find a maneuvering point that we can drive into and then back off from in reverse,” explains Peter Glier, who has already used this “trick” several times with his team when dealing with difficult uphill drives. Things got exciting once again right before the crane’s destination: The last stretch in the route was so steep that the Prangl team set up a truck as a tractor in front of the crane out of caution. “The engine on the AC 1000 is more than powerful enough to handle that kind of thing, so it wasn’t a matter of the engine output not being sufficient. Instead, our concern was that the wheels could start spinning due to how steep the slope was,” Peter Glier says when explaining why they took this precaution right as they were getting to the top of the mountain. Once at the top, crane operator Heinz Schuller still had nothing but good things to say: “The AC 1000 more than proved itself. Its outstanding transmission enabled it to smoothly handle even critical situations, such as driving on steep, unpaved mountain passes.” Ambitious installation schedule Once there, the actual lifts were a matter of routine for the Prangl team and its crane: After two setup days with two team members, the crane was ready to start lifting. And thanks to its large lifting capacity and high lifting height, it proved to be the ideal machine for the job: Continued on page 6

It was able to easily lift all steel sections, nacelles, and rotor blades – with maximum weights of 58 tonnes – to the required height of up to 78 meters while working with a radius of 21 meters. Given the special local
weather conditions and the small time slots when crane operations are possible, only a crane that is able to be moved quickly and with little effort can really support the Prangl team achieving just in time its ambitious schedule erecting 14 wind turbines
MB Star Of The World’s Most Important Trade Fairs This Autumn As usual 2016 is confirmed to be very busy for MB Crusher that, after the great success of Bauma last April, will be involved until the very end of the year in the most important international trade fairs. vermeer Terrain leveller SEM Can Help Mining Industry Regulations are having a significant impact on productivity in the mining industry at a time when it’s already running on thin margins. There are options that can help a mine increase production while at the same time adhering to drill and blast regulations, addressing sound and vibration abatement and reducing dust to minimize the effect on air quality. One solution is the Vermeer T1255III Terrain Leveller surface excavation machine (SEM). The Terrain Leveller SEM features an optional dust suppression system, GPS steering and grade control, as well as a cutting head attachment that can create an 80-degree high wall. This technology is ideal for use in surface mine applications — especially those faced with drill and blast restrictions or urban encroachment. The advantages of the Vermeer tech-
nology are numerous: • Access areas of surface mines where drilling and blasting cannot be done because of physical or permit limitations. • See a reduction in noise, dust and vibration compared to drill and blast. • Produce a smaller, more consistent particle size, helping to eliminate the primary crusher step. • Use the Terrain Leveller SEM for haul road construction and maintenance. “The surface excavation machine allows mines to excavate reserves they couldn’t otherwise get to due to drill and blast restrictions or air quality regulations,” says Patrick Robinson, senior commercialization manager for mining at Vermeer. “Mines have already spent considerable time and money on permitting. By integrating our surface excavation technology with their
drill and blast program the mines have the ability to extract those reserves that otherwise may be left behind.” How it works The Terrain Leveller SEM features a patented tilt-head milling attachment with top-down cutting action that can dig up to 21 inches (53.3 cm) deep and 144 inches (365.8 cm) wide in a single pass. As the unit travels forward and the drum rotates, the teeth on top of the drum advance over the top of the mineral surface. Operators can also control material sizing by increasing or decreasing the tooth penetration to produce an 8-inch (20.3 cm) minus product. Uniform product size also allows more efficient settings on secondary and tertiary crushing systems. Enhanced efficiency and dust suppression The Vermeer T1255III direct drive Terrain Level-

ler SEM features a fully hydrostatic motor mounted to the side of the cutting head providing direct drive power to the cutting drum. The direct drive drum design delivers more horsepower to the cutting drum, resulting in enhanced efficiency when working in hard rock conditions. In addition, the direct drive drum allows the quarry operator to cut an 80-degree high wall providing slope stability that is desired in high-wall mining applications. Vermeer also offers a chain drive drum which allows the quarry operator to cut a 90-degree high wall, and is also designed to work in hard rock conditions. On many mine sites, dust is a challenge due to urban encroachment and air quality concerns. An optional dust suppression system on the Vermeer Terrain Leveller SEM features an enclosed cutting head with two large vacuums pulling dust from the enclosed cutting head into baghouses. The collected dust is dropped beneath the machine, helping to reduce the amount of dust entering the air. This also diminishes the need to source water to control dust during the mining process. GPS technology and autonomous control The T1255III Terrain Leveller SEM also features an optional GPS technology that can also be used to create a mine-by-line plan. A mine plan can be uploaded to the GPS system and the machine will automatically cut to the plan. “Machine steering is controlled by the GPS technology, helping remove human error for cutting head overlap and maximizing efficiency of the machine,” says Robinson. “The GPS

A patented tilt cutting head tied to GPS technology allows the operator to control the cutting head depth and pitch. This feature allows the operator to cut to the mine plan — producing a flat, almost roadsmooth surface; a grade for drainage; or a sloped haul road. The technology also eliminates rapid changes in cutting depth, which can impact productivity, and can provide more precision cutting than an operatorcontrolled system. Performance monitoring The T1255III is equipped with Vermeer SmartTEC control software that assists operators with adjustments to machine operation to help maximize machine performance. “Our SmartTEC system displays the status of the many critical elements of machine performance, with prompts providing visual cues to the operator for recommended control adjustment,” says Robinson. “The software also monitors and records various machine operation attributes for future analysis by the machine owner or fleet manager.” Operator safety The cab features an operator presence system that disengages the ground drive and cutting attachment if the operator leaves

the seat. The machines are available with a rollover protective module (ROPM) and a falling object protective structure (FOPS) for working near a high pit wall. The machine’s lowcentre’ of gravity helps maintain machine stability. Other Features In addition, the Terrain Leveller SEM has a pressurized cab with filtered air system to provide an increased level of operator comfort. The SEM can also be equipped with an optional full-function wireless remote, which allows the operator to run the machine from a safe distance if the project requires the machine to cut against a high wall. b Source: Vermeer

Agricultural Robotics & Drones: A Complex $10 Billion Future Market A recent report analyzed how robotic market and technology developments will change the business of agriculture, enabling ultraprecision farming and helping address the key global challenges. The report provides segmented ten-year market forecasts for at least 14 categories of agricultural robots and drones. It includes detailed technology roadmaps showing how different robotic/ drone technologies in different agricultural sectors will evolve. It contains 20 interview-based company profiles together with 120 other company profiles or backgrounds. Dairy farms Thousands of robotic milking parlours have already been installed worldwide, creating a $1.9bn industry that is projected to grow to $8.5bn by 2026. Mobile robots are also already penetrating dairy farms, helping automate tasks such as feed pushing or manure cleaning. Autonomous tractors Tractor guidance and autosteer technologies are also going mainstream thanks to improvements and cost reductions in RTK GPS technology. Indeed, more than 300k tractors equipped with autosteer
or tractor guidance will be sold in 2016, rising to more than 660k units per year by 2026. Unmanned autonomous tractors have also been technologically demonstrated with large-scale market introduction largely delayed not by technical issues but by regulation, high sensor costs and the lack of farmers’ trust. This will all change by 2022 and sales of unmanned or master-slave (e.g. follow me) tractors will reach $200m by 2026. Agricultural drones Unmanned remote-controlled helicopters have been spraying rice fields in Japan since early 1990s. Autonomous drones have also been providing detailed aerial maps of farms, enabling farmers to take data-driven sitespecific action. This development will soon enter its boom years as regulatory barriers lower and the precision farming ecosystems finally comes together. In time, the drone hardware will become commoditized and value will shift largely to data acquisition and analytics providers. Agriculture will be a major market for drones, reaching $485m in 2026. Agricultural robots and drone encompass many different technologies, each

Source: IDTechEx Research report Agricultural Robots and Drones 20162026: Technologies, Markets, and Players. Robotic weeding implements Vision-enabled robotic implements have been in commercial use for some years in organic farming. These implements follow the crop rows, identify the weeds, and aid with mechanical hoeing. The next generation of these advanced robotic implements is also in its early phase of commercial deployment. It will be using large troves of data to train its algorithms using deep learning techniques. This will become a $380m market by 2026. Unmanned autonomous robotic weeders and data scouts Vision-enabled and intelligence robots are increasingly reaching navigational autonomy. These small, slow and light robots will be autonomously roaming the farms, analysing plants and taking specific actions such as eliminating a weed. Already, numerous companies and groups have developed and deployed a variety of weeding robots. Whilst most products are in prototype or semi-commercial trail phase, the first notable sales have also taken place aimed at small multi-crop vegetable farmers. This will become $300m market by 2026. Fresh fruit harvesting Despite non-fresh fruit harvesting being largely mechanized, fresh fruit picking has remained mostly out of the reach of machines or robots. Progress here has been hampered by the stringent technical requirements together with the lack of CAD models and the fragmented nature of the market putting off investment. This is however beginning to change, albeit slowly. A limited number of fresh strawberry harvesters are already being commercially trialled whilst fresh apple and citrus harvesters have also reached the level of late stage prototyping. Market adoption will start from 2021 onwards, reaching $230m by 2026. b Source: IDTechEX

toughness as Hitachi’s large mining excavators, the ZX135US-6 and ZX245USLC-6 deliver higher efficiency, reliability and durability. The ZX135US-6 and ZX245USLC-6 take efficiency to a higher level with a hydraulic system that balances engine performance with hydraulic flow. The hydraulic boost system and enhanced boom recirculation generate aggressive boom and arm speed – returning the arm to dig faster, so operators can move more dirt in a day. The ZX245USLC-6 features a unique three-pump hydraulic system that provides even more flow. When demanded, the third pump supplies additional hydraulic oil to the swing circuit without stealing oil and speed from other functions in order to maximize productivity. These models also provide fuel-efficient performance with three work modes. High Productivity (H/P) delivers more power and faster hydraulic response. Power (PWR) delivers a balance of power
and speed, plus fuel economy for normal operation. Economy (ECO) maximizes fuel efficiency while delivering an enhanced level of productivity. Auto-idle and auto-shutdown features contribute to fuel efficiency as well, and an easily accessible battery disconnect switch extends battery life. Hitachi Construction Machinery - America’s Dash-6 line-up continues to grow with the introduction of two new ultrashort excavators – the ZX135US-6 and ZX245USLC-6 – in Canada and the United States. The updated, reducedtail-swing models are equipped with a powerful EPA Final Tier 4 (FT4)/EU Stage IV Isuzu engine complete with integrated, effective engine technologies and do not require a diesel particulate filter. “With a tight tail-swing radius, the ZX135US-6 and ZX245USLC-6 are perfect for contractors working in and around obstacles,” said Mark Wall, excavator product marketing manager for Hitachi Construction Machinery – Americas. “In addition to the emissions update, we used this upgrade as an opportunity to add a few features our customers have been asking for like a standard rearview camera, standard factory installed auxiliary hydraulics with programmable attachment modes, and upperstructure handrails.” Built with the same
meet new emission standards with minimal use of DEF. Additionally, an improved piston design allows particulate matter to be burned in cylinder, so there’s no need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF). In addition, the new pressurized fuel system improves fuel injector operation, and the fuel recirculation system helps prevent fuel gelling in cold climates. This makes it easier for operators to maintain maximum productivity. Both upgraded excavators feature unobstructed all-around visibility thanks to a wide expanse of front, side and overhead glass and mirrors, plus a standard rearview camera. Operators of the ZX135US-6 get maximum support from a sculpted mechanical suspension high-back seat. An air-suspension heated seat now comes standard for the ZX245USLC-6. In addition, an automatic, high-velocity bi-level climate-control system with automotive-style adjustable louvers helps keep the glass clear, the cab comfortable and the operator productive. D-channel side frames house and protect the highly efficient coolers and FT4 engine. Booms, arms and mainframes are so tough, they’re warranted for three years or 10,000 hours, whichever comes first. Structure Of UBC’s Tall Wood Building Now Complete The mass wood structure and façade has been completed for UBC’s Brock Commons student residence—the world’s tallest wood building at 18 storeys (53 metres, about 174 feet)—four months ahead of schedule, showcasing the advantages of building with wood. The structure was completed less than 70 days after the prefabricated components were first delivered to the site. Construction will now focus on interior elements, with completion expected in early May 2017—18 per cent (or four months) faster than a typi-
cal project. The building is expected to welcome more than 400 students in September 2017. “This remarkable building, the first of its kind in the world, is another shining example of Canadian ingenuity and innovation, an apt demonstration of how Canada’s forest industry is finding new opportunities through technology and innovation — opening up a world of possibilities for our forest and construction industries,” said Jim Carr, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. Brock Commons is the first mass wood, steel and
concrete hybrid project taller than 14 storeys in the world. The building has a concrete podium and two concrete cores, with 17 storeys of cross-laminatedtimber floors supported on glue-laminated wood columns. The cladding for the façade is made with 70 per cent wood fibre. “Brock Commons is living proof that advanced wood products are a terrific material to build with and support efficient assembly. It also showcases new applications for B.C. lumber, leading to new job opportunities in B.C.’s
forest industry,” said Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Other wood structure buildings on UBC’s Vancouver campus include the AMS Student Nest, the Engineering Student Centre, the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability, the Bioenergy Research and Demonstration Facility, and the Earth Sciences building. “Wood is increasingly recognized as an important, innovative and safe building material choice. This new tall wood building reflects UBC’s leadership in sustainable construction and our commitment to providing our students with more on-campus housing,” said UBC President Santa J. Ono. As a “living laboratory,” Brock Commons will also be a source of learning through interdisciplinary research and educational projects undertaken by
UBC faculty, staff and students. The project is expected to cost approximately $51.5 million, with $47.07 million financed by UBC. Being the first of its kind, it entailed an initial innovation cost and received funding from Natural Resources Canada ($2.34 million), the Province of B.C. ($1.65 million), and the Binational Softwood Lumber Council ($467,000). “Taller wood buildings offer tremendous economic and environmental benefits. The lessons learned at Brock Commons will help transform the built environment in Canada and around the world. In fact, we are already seeing interest in the systems used here for projects in the U.S., Japan and China,” said Cees de Jager, general manager of the Binational Softwood Lumber Council. Vancouver’s Acton Ostry Architects designed the building in collaboration
October 2016
with structural engineer Fast + Epp, tall wood advisor Architekten Hermann Kaufmann of Austria, and Structurlam in Penticton, B.C., which provided the prefabricated wood components. UBC Properties Trust is managing the project. Wood is a sustainable and versatile building material that stores, rather than emits, carbon dioxide. By using wood, the impact is a reduction of 2,432 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide compared to other construction materials, the equivalent of taking around 500 cars off the road for a year. The building is targeting LEED Gold certification, a rating system that promotes environmental responsibility for building owners and operators. It will exceed required fire ratings and standard seismic safety requirements. b Source: UBC

Herman Ciardullo, President of Oakridge Landscaping, was absolutely clear about his reasons for switching to a new tire supplier for his skid steer fleet. “We can’t afford flats - that’s the bottom line,” Ciardullo continues. “With wages for four or five crew on a job, waiting four hours with a machine that’s down for a tire repair or a plug, it’s not smart business. You’re better off spending a couple hundred bucks for a tire that’s not going to get flats.” Herman is keenly aware of what a blown tire really costs. “When a skid steer goes down on a jobsite, it costs me at least $150/hr for a crew of 4, plus we have a truck onsite that we cost out at $20/hr. It takes 4 hours for a service guy to come and change the tire. That’s $680 for a tire change!” Ciardullo turned over his downtime problem to his Maintenance Manager, Shawn Guiluppe and his Equipment Superintendent, Randy Deleavey. Guiluppe, a recent addition to the Oakridge team, was quite familiar with tire problems on skid steers. “When I came on board here, Herman told me there was no time to lose to get this issue solved. Camso solid rubber tires fixed our flats situation in my old job, so I called in my tire guy, Roger, to help us out here.” Calling in the “tire guy” Roger Abreu is Guilup-
October 2016 for Oakridge. The SKS 793S is designed to switch seamlessly from one application to another. Smooth tires wear longer on hard surfaces. Traditional R4 tires have extra traction in the dirt. The SKS 793S is the best of both worlds, with a deep inverted lug for traction, but also a wide smooth tread face for wearability. “That’s the tire!” Guiluppe recalls, “When Roger showed me the SKS 793S, I went ‘Yup, that’s it - that’s the tire!’ We had switched to smooth tires for water cuts, and lugged tires to work in the dirt. But when we put tires on a machine that was slated for one thing, it would be sent to do something else!” “The issue is with the hard scrubbing. The skid steer can turn on a dime but you can blow lugs off a tire, no problem. That’s where the pneumatics has a problem.” Fitting the entire skid steer fleet with SKS 793S tires simplifies life for Randy Deleavey, too. “I can’t select which skid steer is going to which job all the time,” he explains, “Any particular jobsite can give you a mix of jobs and conditions. So now it’s easy – any of our skid steers can do any job, just that much better.” A year after coming to work at Oakridge, Guiluppe feels that his new tire program has the firm’s number one maintenance problem well in hand. “With pneumatics, we had bent rims, blowouts, machines down and lost wages. Now – no downtime! They just continue to work.” b
pe’s tire specialist at Benson Tires, the area’s Camso dealer. With more than 20 years in the tire business, Abreu was soon able to make some recommendations for the Oakridge fleet – starting with the firm’s 14 skid steers. “We understand this business, the need to keep machines working,” says Abreu. “This is why you never see our customers’ machines sitting next to a tire truck with six or seven guys standing around the machine!” “We do a lot of out of town jobs,” says Guiluppe. “So if a machine goes down, Herman has a bunch of guys just filling in time until it’s fixed. Before we switched, we had one week where we had to make five service calls for pneumatic tires – and one call was on overtime!.” Making the switch The switch to solid rubber tires started showing results right away. “We knew the first year is going to be the expensive year,” Abreu admits. “This is when we’re switching the fleet over and getting the right wheels in there. But in the next year, the tire costs go down, as much as 40%. Then, we’re just going to press off the old rubber and press on the new.” As Oakridge was experimenting with different SKS treads, Abreu learned about the launch of the SKS 793S tire at Camso’s nearby regional office. It looked like perfect match Source: Camso

Peterbilt To Participate In Doe’s Supertruck II Program Peterbilt announced it will work with Cummins to develop technologies under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SuperTruck II program. The technologies will double freight efficiency to achieve Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) requirements set forth for model years 2021, 2024 and 2027. “Peterbilt is proud to support the DOE’s SuperTruck II program in cooperation with Cummins,” said Darrin Siver, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “We will work together to build on the success of our original SuperTruck program.” “Cummins and the entire team is focused on developing technologies that can transform the industry and help our customers be more successful while continuing to be great stewards of the environment. Combining some of the best technical minds
air compressors, power steering pumps and cooling pumps. To reduce rolling resistance, Peterbilt will team with tire manufacturing partners to investigate alternative compounds and tire configurations for optimized surface contact. The SuperTruck II program is a five-year program between Peterbilt and Cummins. The team hopes to not only meet, but exceed the goal of the doubling the baseline truck’s efficiency. On the original SuperTruck program, the Peterbilt and Cummins team demonstrated a 66 percent fuel economy improvement and 76 percent freight efficiency improvement over the baseline truck. Advanced aerodynamics, predictive cruise control, chassis lightweighting and batterybased A/C systems for idle reduction led to these improvements. These options are now available on the Model 579 EPIQ, which demonstrates Peterbilt’s goal of developing quick-to-market technologies. b
available for this project, I am confident that we can reach our goals and deliver results that are a win for our customers, a win for our organizations and a win for the environment,” said Wayne Eckerle, Cummins Vice President of Research and Technology. Peterbilt will work to improve aerodynamics by 15 percent in all wind directions, which will provide customers an up to 7.5 percent improvement in fuel economy. This enhancement will decrease aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance. “Peterbilt recognizes customers’ needs for reduced fuel costs,” said Scott Newhouse, Peterbilt Chief Engineer. “Our aerodynamic and fuel saving initiatives align with the goals of the SuperTruck II program.” Peterbilt will work to improve fuel economy and efficiency through technologies including auxiliary systems such as Source: Peterbilt

CLAAS Presents The DISCO 1100 TREND 10.70m Mower Bad Saulgau/Harsewinkel, June 2016. A high level of efficiency is required for the intensive utilisation of grassland. During unfavourable weather, the quality of the silage is often dependant on speedy harvesting. With the DISCO 1100 TREND, CLAAS presents a new mower, which guarantees a high level of efficiency in grassland farming thanks to its ease of operation and a particularly wide working width of 10.70 m. The new mower is based on the DISCO 1100 C BUSINESS. Introduced last year and with the same
working width, this is the most efficient mounted mower conditioner on the market. With the addition of the DISCO 1100 TREND, CLAAS now offers this mower without the conditioner and with simpler operation – making it ideal for farmers who rely on the use of their own equipment for grassland farming. Long-Term Technology The DISCO 1100 TREND mower combines a high level of efficiency with simple, and therefore very reliable, long-lasting technology. Its means of operation are purely mechanical except for one electronic control terminal,

via which various functions such as the individual raising of mower units can be selected. All other functions are easily controlled by the operator using the tractor’s spool valves, meaning that the mower is ideally suited for use with simply equipped tractors of 160 hp and above. The mower works using the tried and tested MAX CUT cutter bar and ACTIVE FLOAT support system. Using the ACTIVE FLOAT system, the operator can adapt the bearing pressure of the two mower units at any time during operation and react to changing conditions. As with all DISCO mowers, optional skids and high-cut or double high-cut skids are available so that the cutting height can be changed. The favourable transmission ratio of the gears also allows the mower to be operated at a reduced speed of 850 r.p.m., which significantly reduces diesel consumption. Collision Protection The long service life of the DISCO 1100 TREND is ensured by a wide range of protective devices. In the event of a collision, the SAFETY LINK overload protection protects the cutter bar drive. The hydraulic non-stop break-back safety device offers additional protection for both mower units. The rams are activated at a specific pressure and the mower unit is swivelled backwards and upwards. Due to the constant oil pressure in the system, the affected unit is then swivelled back into working position after the obstacle has been passed. Compact Road Transport Despite the wide working width, road transportation is not a problem. The telescopic arms easily move the mowing unit into a vertical position behind the tractor. The safety guards are automatically folded away to the side or upwards. As a result, the tractor/mower combination is also safe for road travel, manoeuvrable and compact during transport, and still measures less than 4.0 m in height and 3.0
m in width. It can also be parked in the transport position. Coupling and de-coupling is particularly easy. The DISCO 1100 TREND mower, just like other DISCO models, is equipped with KENNFIXX hydraulic couplers. A magnetic holder ensures that the hydraulic hoses are stowed away securely and protected in the parking position. It is also possible for the mower to be equipped with LED working lights. New 50 Series Trailed Mower CLAAS has also added a new addition to the 50 series trailed mower range, the DISCO 3150 TC FLAPGROUPER, which features a new design and is equipped with the MAX CUT cutter bar. In addition, it also features two long, hydraulically controlled swath formers, which enable a double swath to be created, which is approximately 3.0 m in width. This makes the swath ideal for harvesting machinery fitted with a wide pick-up. This
October 2016
procedure is widely established in France. For rear mowers in the 50 series, CLAAS also offers two new options. As with the CONTOUR series, a stable parking device is now also available for the simpler models. This means that the mower can be easily parked on a storage frame in its transport position. Another new feature is the modern headland limiter for mod-
els without a conditioner. This means that lifting is automatically limited by a hydraulic valve and the height is determined by the operator via a slotted hole. The product range and equipment variants can vary in certain countries. In case of doubt, please contact the CLAAS sales company or the CLAAS importer of your country. b Source: CLAAS

Yu Sin Engineering Work Pte Ltd skidded a tunnel boring machine underground during a major subway infrastructure project in Singapore in August. The components of the tunnel borer were lowered down the 100ft (30m) shaft onto a Hydra-Slide HT300 hydraulically powered skidding system by the Terex AC700 crane at ground level. When completed, the fully assembled tunnel boring machine will be 22ft (6.96m) in diameter and weigh 461 ton in total. The new subway tunnel will be almost 2,000ft (600m) in length, connecting two areas of the city currently separated by water. Contractor Yu Sin Engineering Work Pte Ltd from Singapore sought a solution to move the boring machine parts over a distance of approximately 66ft (20m) and connect them in the launch shaft. The machine could not be lowered
directly onto its working path because of a major road over the tunnel entry point and other structural interferences. Having discovered Canada-based Hydra-Slide online, Yu Sin was convinced that this was the right equipment for the job. Given the project time constraints, the 23,000lb (10,500kg) HT300 system travelled by cargo plane and then by truck to the jobsite. Shipments of this kind would more commonly travel by ocean with a transit time of about 45 days. In addition, Ekki hardwood jacking timbers supplied by Hydra-Slide were also air freighted directly from the mill in Holland to Singapore. Robert Young, director of operations at HydraSlide, was onsite to provide training for Yu Sin personnel on the set-up and operation of the HT300 skidding system and witness
the first slide of the boring machine components. He explained that despite the complexities involved with transporting the skidding equipment by Air to Singapore, no complications arose from utilizing the equipment underground. Young said: “This is actually the perfect application for the HT system due to its modular design, light weight and ease of assembly. No extra ground testing was necessary as the bottom of the launch shaft was poured concrete that was capable of supporting the weight of the HT300 and loads. This was the first time our equipment was used to move a TBM [tunnel boring machine] and we see future potential in this area, especially after the success of this project.” In addition to the standard HT300 skid system, Hydra-Slide’s scope of supply included provision of specially designed skid

Jefferson Yee, general manager at Yu Sin, said the front body assembly consisted of six pieces weighing 241 tons in total, which were lowered into the launch shaft and assembled on the HT300 skid system. It comprised the front body bottom (34
tons), bearing (98 tons), front body top (32 tons), cutter head (64 ton), working deck and man lock, which together added another 13 tons of weight. Yee explained that after the front body was slid into place, the middle body was lowered in one 128-ton piece, followed by the 64 ton rear body and, finally, the two-part screw conveyor that weighed 28 tons. At the end of each slide, the
sub-assemblies were pulled onto the launch cradle using hydraulic jacks and connected together. He concluded: “The project was a huge success. I would like to thank the Hydra-Slide team for helping us achieve our goals for the installation of the TBM.” The project is scheduled for completion in 2018. b Source: Hydra-Slide

J. O’Shea Boosts Production With The Sandvik QE441 Mobile Scalper Manchester based J. O’Shea & Sons, a specialist bulk excavation and recycling company, has recently invested in a QE441 heavy duty scalping plant. This has been acquired in order to increase production at its C&D recycling operation. A valued Sandvik customer, J. O’Shea and Sons has owned Sand-
vik, and formerly Extec, equipment for the past 15 years. Family owned business J. O’Shea & Sons was initially established in 1959 and provides bulk excavation, haulage, demolition and more recently aggregate recycling for the construction industry. Currently operated by brothers
John, Paul and Des O’Shea, it has continually expanded its business over the years. In addition to contracting services, the company is now considered to be one of the leading suppliers and distributors of recycled construction and demolition materials for use as aggregate in construction sites across the North West.

5725 Atlantic Dr, Mississauga, On
In order to deliver materials and services, and to operate as a bulk haulage business, O’Sheas now operates an impressive fleet of 30 HGVs. Its fleet also includes 8 wheel tippers and grabs, and approximately 25 other machines consisting of excavators, loading shovels, dozers, dump trucks, crushers and screens for their plant hire operation. With the increasing demand for recycled material J. O’Sheas decided to invest in a QE341 mobile scalper for its recycling depot in Manchester 3 years ago. Due to the confined space on site, it was decided to take advantage of the versatility of the QE341, and configure this unit with both the mid- and fines conveyor on one side of the machine. This is a unique feature in this product category which almost halves
the size of its required footprint. Re-positioning of the conveyors can easily be done on site with suitable lifting equipment. Over the past 3 years, the QE341 has more than adequately been doing the job it was intended for, processing recycled soil from hard-core material. Maximum throughput As demand for recycled materials started to increase; the need for a larger model became apparent in order to fulfill O’Sheas customers’ requirements. The ability to quickly process the sub-soil before it becomes too wet was identified, so the need for a scalper with a larger capacity was seen as important to the continued development of the company. Having used its equipment for many years, Sandvik was once again approached consulting with Area Sales
Representative Fintan Harkin. O’Shea’s immediately decided that the larger sibling of the QE341, the QE441 with a production capacity of up to 900 tph, would be the ideal solution to cater for its increased production needs. Developed for large aggregate producers, a key attribute of the QE441 is its large, highly aggressive 18 x 6’ screenbox, which boasts a 40% larger screening area than the QE341 for maximum throughput. The larger model has been built with the same customer-focused characteristics as the QE341 with performance, ease of operation and maintenance at the forefront of design. This includes Sandvik’s easy to use control system and user interface with sequential start, whilst two-speed tracking via radio remote control Continued on page 19

Elongated 12 x 100 mm mesh was fitted to the bottom deck enabling the processing of the required fractions to produce materials for resale such as 6F5, 6F2, MOT and topsoil. Des O’Shea, Director of the company, has been delighted with the increased production capacity with the QE441. “We are now producing 90-110 tph more soil compared to the QE341 and are really happy with the machine,” comments Des who adds, “We have also found the machine to be very reliable with minimum downtime.” The QE441 has therefore replaced the QE341 in this application and the QE341 sold since its introduction in 2007,” said Jason Skoog, Kenworth assistant general manager for sales and marketing. “Due to its popularity, we continued to offer the T660 after introducing the award-winning T680 four years ago. Since that time, more and more T660 customers have converted to the T680. We want to give our excellent customers one last chance to own this industry favourite. ”When it entered the Class 8 market, the T660 became the latest evolution of Kenworth’s legendary aerodynamic product line and reinforced Kenworth’s leadership in both quality and fuel economy performance, taking the reins from the Kenworth T600 – the industry’s first truly aerodynamic truck that debuted in 1985. The Kenworth T660 also featured modern styling, superior forward-lighting technology, advanced technology, and increased driver comfort. Fleets and truck operators interested in ordering the Kenworth T660 may contact their Kenworth dealer for more information. The T660 is standard with the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 455-hp and 1,650 lb-ft of torque. has since been transferred to O’Shea’s 20 acre quarry in order to size down aggregates. A winning combination Sandvik mobile screening technology, together with the high level of service from Sandvik UK, has allowed J. O’Sheas to experience the very best in modern scalping equipment. This combination has boosted the production of high quality recycled materials in order to meet customer requirements. “We have used Sandvik for the past 15 years and

Organized by the LafargeHolcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, the competition identifies the ideas with the highest potential to tackle today’s challenges to increasing urbanization and to improve quality of life. Projects and concepts from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, planning, technology, and civil and materials engineering are eligible to be entered online in the USD 2 million Awards competition; it closes for submissions on March 21, 2017. The competition’s main category is open to architects, planners, engineers, students of related disciplines, project owners, builders and construction firms that showcase sustainable responses to technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues within contemporary building and construction. Projects must have reached an advanced stage of design, have a high probability of execution, and may not have started construction before July 4, 2016. Participants up to the age of 30 years of age can also submit visionary concepts and bold ideas in the competition, irrespective of the probability of actual implementation of the project: the Next Generation category specifically seeks “blue-sky” solutions by students and young professionals. The competition is divided in five geographic regions – each with its own jury of renowned specialists. Projects are evaluated according to the region in which they are to be built, and are measured against the five “target issues” for sustainable construction which look at a project from a holistic perspective and take its entire lifecycle into account. The criteria cover innovation and transferability; ethical stan-

The juries are headed by Harry Gugger (for region Europe), Ray Cole (North America), Angelo Bucci (Latin America), Nagwa Sherif (Middle East Africa) and Donald Bates (Asia Pacific). The winners will be announced at a series of five consecutive Awards ceremonies in the second half of 2017. Winners automatically qualify for the global Awards competition in 2018. Entry in the competition is free and must be made in English using a webbased form to provide information on authorship, a project summary, technical details, as well as project images or illustrations. Terex Trucks: In It For The Long Haul Two years since being acquired, Terex Trucks’ new vigour is leading to tangible benefits for its articulated and rigid hauler customers. In June 2014 when Terex Trucks became part of Volvo Construction Equipment the central message of the acquisition was that both companies were ‘stronger together’. Two years on, and despite a further downturn in demand for haulers in general, a series of product, service and distribution improvements at the Motherwell, Scotland based company have firmly taken root. Speaking about the last two years of ownership, Andrew Knight, vice president of strategy and business development at Volvo CE, makes clear that the company has not deviated from its initial plan for Terex Trucks in almost any respect. “When we bought
the business we made some clear statements – we said that we were committed to the brand, committed to the product and committed to the dealers – and we haven’t strayed from that at all with our actions. “We bought a business with a well-regarded reputation and an established population of products in the field,” he continues. “Machines that need looking after with parts and services, and that offer a good revenue stream. We bought Terex Trucks because it has a range of products that we don’t have – rigid haulers – but also because we could see advantages in having a value brand of articulated haulers in our portfolio. So short term market volatility aside, the strategic reasoning for getting into this business remain valid.”
Since the acquisition, Terex Trucks needed to push forward and stabilise its position in the market. This has occurred by Volvo investing in making products more reliable, as well as easier to use and support. It has also helped promote the brand by championing Terex Trucks at conventions such as Bauma and Intermat. “The influence of having a large parent isn’t always obvious from the outside but there’s been a large amount of support given. A lot of time has been spent improving the way Terex Trucks goes to market, how the brand is supported and in strengthening the sales team and dealer network.” This April saw Terex Trucks roll out the first fruits of its new line of machines, with the ‘Gen 10’ TA400 articulated dump truck gaining plaudits following its international

This year saw Terex Trucks roll out the first fruits of its new line of machines, with the ‘Gen 10’ TA400 articulated dump truck gaining kudos following its international launch at the Bauma exhibition in Germany. launch at the Bauma exhibition in Germany. “Every investment that is made in the business – whether it is product or marketing or infrastructure – is a sign that Terex Trucks will be in a confident position when the markets for these machines improve,” continues Knight. The introduction of the Gen 10 was also a conscious effort to showcase Terex Trucks’ robust simplicity and highlight its position in the articulated hauler market. Knight explains: “Terex Trucks offers a well proven reliable product that can be sold into tough environments and needs a straightforward maintenance approach.” A flexible approach to haulers “The rigid hauler market is in the doldrums presently, due to low demand
for commodities, but it is important that Terex Trucks remains competitive in the market and presents a compelling offer,” Knight says. “Many of our customers have told us: ‘Don’t make the product any more complicated, we run these machines in arduous environments, miles away from workshops and civilisation and we need to fix the product in a straightforward and easy way ourselves’. As a result Terex Trucks has a strong position in offering a reliable product that can be easily maintained in difficult environments.” Addressing the problems that the brand is facing in North America in terms of market demand, Knight says: “The total market itself is tough so we never assume the economy will get us out of a problem,

but if we continue to do the right things, when the market recovers there’s no reason why Terex Trucks cannot be successful.” So keeping the faith, Knight emphasised the solid foundation of confidence in Terex Trucks’ long term potential. While the Scottish brand may not have all the latest technological features, its recipe of simple robust quality has stood the test of time, helping it to flourish in emerging markets and making it a company worth investing time and money in. “Today Terex Trucks is a successful company with the backing of a big firm. The benchmark for making a business succeed is to plan for success. We’re not planning to fail – we’re just getting on with it!” b

Make Big Jobs Feel Small With The New John Deere Loaders Contractors, landscapers, farmers, rental professionals and other equipment owners who understand the value of compact equipment can now expect even more power, productivity and uptime on the job with the new John Deere largeframe G-Series skid steers (330G, 332G) and compact track loaders (331G, 333G). These machines were inspired by extensive feedback from John Deere customers looking for more productivity, better visibility and simplified service to remain competitive in their businesses. John Deere not only answered by improving in these areas, but also added a host of new features to make the largeframe G-Series machines easier to run and maintain on jobs of every scale. “There has never been a better time to own compact equipment,” said Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “Demand for compact machines that maximize productivity and uptime at low daily operating costs is growing, and John Deere is growing with it by adding powerful new options to our G-Series lineup, like the new large-frame skid steers and compact track
loaders.” The biggest improvement on the large-frame G-Series is the refined vertical-lift loader boom design that raises higher, reaches farther and lifts more for quicker and easier loading. Height to hinge pin is 11 feet, enabling operators to easily load dump trucks, feed mixers, and fill hoppers and everything in between. Customers will also appreciate the new lift path that extends an additional six inches from the machine. The large frames also serve up substantially greater boom and bucket breakout forces. In fact, they have horsepower that is comparable to a small backhoe or crawler, and they also work comfortably in tight quarters, so operators can accomplish more with less machine. Increased rated operating capacities of up to 3,700 lbs. give these models the muscle needed to master heavy loads, coupled with a breakout force that has been increased by 40 percent to make lifting heavy loads easier. Increased auxiliary hydraulic flow and power on the large frames means customers can make the most of an even broader range of attachments for a wide variety of work. Universal Quik-Tatch enables
you to go from bucket to forks and more in just seconds. Generous standard and optional highflow auxiliary hydraulics also let you effortlessly run powered attachments, such as hydraulic hammers, cold planers, mulching heads and trenchers. All auxiliary hydraulic lines and wiring on new machines are now routed through the boom where they’re more protected and out of the operator’s sightline. Understanding a comfortable operator is a more productive operator, John Deere made several enhancements to the cab on the large-frame G-Series machines. An easy-access entryway, tightly sealed swing-out door, and ample foot-and legroom simplify getting in, getting comfortable and getting things done. Unobstructed sightlines to the bucket corners, the edge of the tires or tracks, and the job site ahead and behind instill confidence in tight quarters. Best-in-class visibility gets even better with an optional rearview camera that displays the action behind on an upfront monitor and an optional LED lighting package that provides front and side illumination for extended days and afterdark tasks.

Consistent with other G-Series models, flexible control choices on the large frames allow contractors to choose between standard EH ISO controls, (EH) ISO joystick controls or options that are switchable between ISO- and H-patterns, or EH 3-way switchable controls that allow operations between ISO- or H-pattern, or hand and foot controls of operation within the same machine. The cabs and floors are sealed and pressurized to keep out dust and excess noise, and a footwell clean-out makes debris management easier than ever, minimizing costly maintenance and downtime. Cab side windows also remove easily for cleaning. Another key uptime improvement on the G-Series large-frame machines is the integration of John Deere WorkSight, an exclusive suite of telematics solutions that increases uptime while lowering operating costs. At its heart, JDLink Ultimate machine monitoring provides real-time data and health prognostics to suggest maintenance solutions that decrease costly downtime. Remote diagnostics enable a dealer to read codes, record performance data and even update software without a trip to the job site.
