Komatsu America Introduces The New WA480-8 Wheel Loader Komatsu America Corp., a leading global heavy equipment manufacturer, today announced the introduction of the new WA480-8 Wheel Loader. Equipped with an EPA Tier 4 Final certified emissions regulations-compliant engine, this latest addition to the wheel loader family combines higher production with lower fuel costs, improved operator comfort and enhanced serviceability. New operator-friendly design features include the optional advanced joystick steering system (AJSS), which eliminates the steering wheel, and with it, a major cause of operator fatigue. Also, the new “generous curves” bucket design fills and retains material better, making the machine nearly eight percent more productive than the previous model.
“The WA480-8 is the perfect tool for quarry, infrastructure and nonresidential construction applications, said Craig McGinnis, product marketing manager, Komatsu America. “It’s the perfect threepass loader for on-highway trucks and hoppers,” McGinnis said. Under The Hood • A powerful 299 HP, 11.04 L, EPA Tier 4 Final certified, SAA6D125E-7 engine uses up to 20 percent less fuel than its Tier 3 predecessor • Nearly 20 years of leadership in emissions technology enabled Komatsu designers to create an engine that reduces Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) by more than 80%, from the Tier 3 model • Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF) and other after treatment components are designed in conjunction

covery cylinder effectively reduces the energy (fuel) demand for each lift cycle by as much as 30%. According to Constantino Lannes, “The Green Hybrid system captures energy on every downstroke, and stores it in separate gas accumulators at the rear of the machine. It then releases this stored power on each lift to assist in raising the boom and its load. The principle is similar to a spring being compressed and then releasing its energy by allowing it to expand. Furthermore, the system is a very simple Source: Sennebogen design using a standard hydraulic cylinder that connect Browse Thousands to the accumulators at the of Equipment & Truck back of the unit.” Sennebogen’s model Listings at 855 E, 860 E, 870 E and 875 E are all equipped with the innovative green hybrid system. Women In Trucking Announces Its Member Of The Month Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has announced Sarah Johnson as its September Member of the Month. Sarah is the Executive Vice President of Milestone Trailer Leasing in St. Charles, Missouri. While in college, Sarah
started working part-time for her father’s trailer rental and leasing company, Personal Attention Leasing (PAL) which was based in St. Louis, Missouri. At the time, he had a rental fleet of 200 trailers. The summer she started, he added his sec-
ond location in Kansas City, Kansas. Sarah always thought it was a temporary position, as she had different plans for her career path. She moved away to Chicago and Los Angeles while earning her degree, but eventually settled back
to the St. Louis area to help again with the business. The running joke in the industry is that once you’re in transportation, you never get out! Over the course of 10 years, Personal Attention Leasing grew through acquisition of assets and companies to a fleet of 15,000 trailers and 12 locations. Sarah held several roles in the company during those years. From inspecting equipment, bookkeeping, facilitating the human resource function, to helping the team with computers. Whatever it was, she would jump in and figure out how to make it happen, always putting the needs of the customer first. “The growth of the company and my various roles gave me tremendous exposure to all aspects of the business, which I couldn’t have learned in any classroom,” she said. “Considering the fact that I worked for my father, I put pressure on myself to prove to my co-workers that I earned my position and that nothing was ‘given’ to me. Over time, that pressure has transitioned

to the fact I am most often, the only women in the meeting,” she said. Sarah recalls how much she liked to play kickball at recess in the first grade. When it was her turn at the plate, the boys would move in from the outfield, thinking she couldn’t kick it very far. Then, she would kick it over their heads. “I simply wanted to get out on the kickball field and play (or win) the same game, the same way as my classmates. No special treatment,” she said. In 2016, Personal Attention Leasing was rebranded to the parent company’s name of Milestone. The purpose was to represent all product lines to the market including intermodal equipment, containers, chassis and highway trailers. Today Milestone Equipment features 80,000 assets in total. As Executive Vice President, she has overseen their national network of 27 locations in the Trailer Leasing division. Most recently, she has been appointed the task of building Milestone’s Mobile Storage and Warehousing platform which
is scheduled to formally launch early 2019. “With our growth trajectory, I have been fortunate enough to see the transportation industry in all types of businesses and applications. I enjoy learning the inner working of the retailers, manufacturers, distributors and trucking companies. I’m equally passionate about helping these industries to creatively solve problems,” said Sarah. “I enjoy working with the employees in the field, supporting them in their success and remaining diligent to serving our customer base.” Being a woman in transportation reminds Sarah of being on that kickball field. She doesn’t want special treatment. Not in her favor or against her. She is knowledgeable about this business, she knows equipment, she has ideas, she likes building business partnerships, and enjoys turning that into profitability. She wants to use the skills she has developed to compete in the game. b Source: Women in Trucking

Visionary Partnership Boosts Quarry Uptime The aggregates industry has had a few tough years in the United States but is now recovering. One limestone quarry not only survived those hard times but thrived – by focusing on the future in a site planning partnership with Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE). The Delta Companies Inc (Delta) is a site development and highway contractor specializing in asphalt paving and road construction materials, including aggregates. Delta operates five quarries and a sand and gravel pit. One of those quarries is located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, near the Mississippi River. The Delta SEMO Quarry in South East Missouri has been a leading supplier of limestone to the local construction industry for more than 40 years. SEMO typically produces between 700,000 to one million tons a year from a 200 acre property with an open pit that is now over 400 feet deep. It is a solid business with ample reserves to keep serving customers for decades to come. Delta knows its business and has a plan for the future but was not satisfied with that. As a subsidiary of the Colas Group, Delta can leverage benefits from the special relationship Colas has with Volvo CE as a global key account customer. One benefit is access to the manufacturer’s site assessment program provided by its Global Key Accounts Management team. In this program, the Volvo CE Key Accounts Solutions team dispatches spe-

cialists to review all aspects of a site operation. The team provides a deep analysis of current and future business, lifts up best practices and uncovers potential areas of improvement. This is an extended dialogue that concludes with a prioritized list of recommendations which the customer can factor in to its immediate and strategic plans. Delta worked closely with Volvo CE to explore how to reduce costs and make its SEMO operation even more efficient. Taking a closer look at the customer’s machine fleet is just one aspect in the complimentary site assessment program. Drilling, blasting, crushing, stockpiling – all were included and considered during the team’s oneweek site visit. They also looked at safety practices, site layout, business planning, reserves planning, environmental aspects and maintenance practice. Taking The (Over) Burden Out Of Mining While SEMO operations were running well, little tweaks were suggested to boost things further. The assessment team – led by David Nus, Director of Global Key Accounts at Volvo CE, and Craig Griffiths, Manager of Customer Solutions at Volvo CE – focused on an overburden project already underway and suggested ways to develop and maintain work benches and haul roads in an efficient and safe way. Other suggestions included aspects of maintenance and fleet management for their mobile fleet, as well as tips for operating a new Volvo EC750E recently delivered to SEMO. This work complemented the day-to-day support provided by the Volvo CE dealer, Rudd Equipment Company. “Our main role at Volvo CE is to sell mobile equipment, but that’s not our only role,” says David. “In these site assessments we want to be able to add value to our clients’ operations, highlight what’s important and advise organizations how to think strategically for the future.
are looking for ways to maximize future profitability. By taking the time to really understand the dynamics of a business, like Delta, Volvo CE is not only able to help its customers improve their operations but also improve the way Volvo CE designs and plans its own machines and services to maximize uptime. Delta SEMO is operated by Delta Companies Inc, a subsidiary of civil engineering giant Colas, who in turn is part of the Bouygues Group and has more than 50 quarries in North America. Volvo CE’s site assessment program with Colas has run more than three years and covered sites in four subsidiaries across two continents to date. “Our collaboration with Colas is proving to be an overwhelming success,” says Craig. “They are world leaders in their industries so have little need for help in how to run their business. Where we do add value is by suggesting small changes to their current operations that will pay dividends for the future.” b

If Volvo CE can contribute in any way to a customer’s success, we become more than just a supplier, we are a true business partner.” Small Changes That Make A Big Impact SEMO is using a new Volvo EC750E excavator as a primary loader for its overburden removal though it does serve in limestone production as well. The excavator loads rigid dump trucks as well as articulated haulers, including a Volvo A40D articulated hauler that dates back to 2005 and boasts over 16,000 hours. The site assessment works well because it advises customers on the best way to use machines like these, to ensure the equipment is appropriate for the job at hand. The findings from site assessment vary from client to client. Some require more input in the day-to-day operations on site, while others Source: Volvo

Plans For Safety In Response To Rock Salt Shortage A shortage in salt supplies has landscape and snow removal professionals making plans to help their customers weather the upcoming winter season safely. The salt inventory shortage affects the Eastern United States as well as Ontario. Salt is the most widely
used tool for managing snow and ice on roads, parking lots and sidewalks. Supplies are very low due to a number of factors: a summer strike at the world’s largest salt mine in Goderich, Ont., reduced capacity at another important mine, and depleted stockpiles after
the late spring ice storm of 2018. Salt producers are allocating scarce supplies to municipalities first. Private snow and ice removal contractors are having difficulty securing salt to service customer properties, and higher prices are inevitable. There is a

Rock salt being imported from other areas within North America and overseas will help, but may not make up the current shortfalls in inventory. Depending on the severity of the winter, existing inventories may likely be depleted quickly, meaning no salt for some contractors. Property owners and managers should work with their contractor to plan ways to deal with this inventory shortage. With safety first in mind, Landscape On-

tario member contractors are approaching this challenge with a multipronged strategy involving both technology and best-management practices. This approach includes enhanced documentation and equipment calibration, to use salt as efficiently and effectively as possible, and working with clients to eliminate nonessential areas from service in order to conserve salt supplies. Some contractors are asking customers to pre-pay for salt to secure inventory. Ice and snow fighting products not based on salt
are also part of the arsenal. Training is another important part of their professional approach to the crisis — contractors are briefing their teams on the situation today, and honing skills to promote top efficiency in snow fighting. Cooperative strategies are the key to safety during this shortage, and Landscape Ontario snow and ice removal contractors are working hard to minimize their clients’ risks during the upcoming winter season. b Source: Landscape Ontario

Building A Strong Construction Safety Culture Safety is improving in the construction industry, according to the National Safety Council, but serious injuries and fatalities still occur. “I think it’s fair to say that while we have been getting better at preventing most incidents and improving safety, in general, there are specific ways in which we have not been improving and we need to do more to address,” explains John Dony of the Campbell Institute/National Safety Council. Dony and fellow safety professionals outlined how to build a strong construction safety culture in a recent CONEXPO-CON/AGG 365 article Beyond Compliance: Creating a Culture of Safety Going beyond compliance training is one of the biggest things that organizations in any industry can do, but this is perhaps more relevant in construction than any other industry because compliance training is often mandated, according to Dony. He suggests that training around more advanced safety topics and focusing on creating a culture of safety are what is really critical - not necessarily being able to score 80 percent on a comprehensive test. Creating a culture of safety includes empowering all workers, employees, or contractors to make observations, report unsafe conditions, and have the authority to stop work without retribution. “Until an organization is able to build that sort of a culture and back it with a management system built on the principle of continuous improvement, it won’t get very far with training,” he explains. Consider this example: you can take first aid training a hundred times, but you will never be a doctor. You’ll just be very good at first aid. In the same way, focusing on a basic level of safety training and not paying
OCTOBER 2018 · PAGE 13 of the most important skills any employee can develop in the construction industry is hazard recognition— and technology can help. Advances in the field of training and development include virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), which are already helping many construction professionals analyze, predict, and prevent hazardous situations. Other emerging technologies that can help with safety training include: • Wearables for monitoring heat stress or limiting access to restricted areas • Sensors for avoiding human and machine interaction • Drones for inspections • Mobile devices for safety reporting and information Dony says the applications for technology that help make workers safer are nearly limitless, and more are being explored by organizations every day. “The key is to consider what technology will have the biggest bang for the buck and also ensure that you don’t add any additional or new risks to a project when you integrate technology as a solution for an existing problem,” he says. “For many employees, acceptance of new technologies can be challenging, so it is important for companies to invest in meaningful training to understand the purpose and successful use of these technologies,” says Braunstein. b
attention to systems and culture will not fundamentally make an organization any safer, Dony says. Still, there are a number of resources and tools at the disposal of construction companies today. For instance, rainy-day and onthe-spot training are available and effective. However, in-person training provides invaluable tools, resources, and information to ensure participants can apply information learned in the field, suggests Eric Perry of the American Traffic Safety Services Assn. (ATSSA). Emerging Technologies Enhance Safety Training Technology, in general, is making training and development both more efficient and effective. Case in point: mobile learning, education and training conducted via hand-held devices. “Training is no longer one and done, check-thebox events,” says David Braunstein of Together for Safer Roads. “Organizations can now offer ongoing, engaging micro-learning events, reaching employees who do not normally work out of an office environment. This means safety training can literally accompany employees to the jobsite, keeping safe practices and procedures top of mind,” he explains. Braunstein suggests one Source: Conexpo

Harbour Investment On The Rock FRONT PAGE STORY: Government of Canada invests $25.8 million in harbour infrastructure throughout eastern Newfoundland
A
dozen communities throughout eastern Newfoundland are welcoming significant federal investments that will benefit the local economy. Coastal communities across Canada are supported by small craft harbours that provide the commercial fishing industry with safe and accessible facilities. With approximately 44,000 Canadians employed in this sector, the Government of Canada is making investments to renew its network of small craft harbours and work with municipalities and other stakeholders where investments and divesti-
tures can enhance local communities. Churence Rogers, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, on behalf of the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced that the Government of Canada is investing $25.8 million in harbour infrastructure improvements at 12 harbours throughout Bonavista-Burin-Trinity. Several harbours have been identified for improvements: • Major wharf reconstruction at Valleyfield Harbour, Musgrave Harbour
and Fortune • Facilities will be repaired and divested to local non-for-profit organizations in Port Blandford and Deadman’s Bay • Essential safety-related repairs are slated for Newman’s Cove • Site clean-ups of derelict/unsafe facilities are planned for Bonavista (Mockbeggar wharf), Bragg’s Island, Frenchman’s Cove (Fortune Bay) and New Chelsea • Ongoing multi-year wharf and breakwater reconstruction work is being completed at Bay de Verde • Ongoing multi-year
This work will stimulate job opportunities that will benefit fishermen and support local communities.
wharf reconstruction work is being completed in Grand Bank “I am pleased to announce these major investments. Investing in the local small craft harbours helps not just the commercial fishing industry, but Bonavista-Burin-Trinity as a whole. I am proud that we are investing in people, promoting inclusive growth and building stronger communities,” said Churence Rogers, Member of Parliament, BonavistaBurin-Trinity. “The work carried out will not only renew and maintain the infrastructure that is essential to the region, but also stimulate job opportunities that will benefit fishermen and support our local communities.” “Investments that help improve communities are a priority for our Government. When we invest in the community, Canadians and the Canadian economy benefit. Small Craft Harbour investments demonstrate the federal government’s commitment to local economies,” said The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast
Guard. “We are proud of this investment to support the fishing industry — a key economic sector that helps support coastal
communities across the country.” b Source: Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Quick Facts • The Government of Canada is investing $250 million over two years to renew its network of small craft harbours and work with municipalities and other stakeholders to enhance local communities, economies and foster job creation. • This is in addition to $100 million that will be invested in 2018-19 for repairs, maintenance, construction, and dredging at core commercial fishing harbours across Canada. • The mandate of the Small Craft Harbours Program is to keep harbours critical to the commercial fishing industry open and in good repair. • Small craft harbours provide critical support to the commercial fishing industry, which had landings valued at almost $3.4 billion in 2016. • Fisheries and Oceans Canada supports more than 1000 harbours across Canada with more than 5000 volunteers from harbour authorities. • Harbour restoration projects are undertaken in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users.

Contractors: 10 Ways to Keep Your Employees Happy Employee retention is no easy task for construction contractors today. It’s no longer enough just to pay competitive wages, keep employees safe and provide regular hours for them to make a steady living. Roger Belisle, vice president of operations of Whissell Contracting Ltd., explains his company is actively committed to ensuring the health and happiness of its workforce, and expresses that commitment through several employee retention activities. He shared through the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 365 initiative 10 ways construction contractors can keep their workers happy and on the job 1. Establish priorities Our company has three “daily pillars”: safety, followed by quality and efficiency. We hold safety meetings every morning, and make sure to cover anything and everything related to our pillars affecting our work. To reinforce our pillars, we regularly offer ongoing training activities for all employees. 2. Emphasize training In our industry, skill is dying. You no longer can simply rely on trade schools to supply qualified workers. You have to grow from within. For example, we recently developed and established an in-house institute for training. It helps us to better prepare our employees to be as productive as possible, and it gives our organization a competitive advantage. 3. Manage employee workloads effectively Construction is a competitive business. Employ-

tential. As an organization, we are quite curious to see what the future will bring on the technology front. 7. Encourage networking and continuous learning Trade shows like CONEXPO/CON-AGG are critical to our workforce development efforts. For the last three or four times the show has been held, we’ve sent somewhere between 30 and 40 company representatives to Las Vegas to see what’s new and bring relevant information back to our company to see if we can use it to the benefit of our clients. 8. Engage, engage, engage We spend quite a bit of time, money and resources in developing our workforce. Our organization has developed a training module for every role in our business, everything from general laborer right up to being the company president. When employees come to work for us, they can see a career path ahead. 9. Identify opportunities and threats, and then act accordingly Our company recognized a growing skills gap in the industry some time ago. We set up in-house training programs, brought in staff to train new employees on how to survey, how to establish benchmarks and elevations, and much more. Eventually, it evolved into a standard, repeatable training program with a consistent message and successful results. 10. Show employees you care, consistently It’s easy for any company to say its workforce is the top priority, but when the pressure is on, many companies don’t always treat their employees as well as they should. Not only do we try to engage workers, we really make an effort to show our employees they are valued. (Examples include annual golf tournaments and Christmas parties and regular cookouts where we travel to jobsites and cook for the employees.) Our organization has received a lot of positive feedback, particularly from employees who have joined us after working for other construction companies, and their comments positively reinforce our efforts. b
ee retention becomes even more difficult if your company does a lot of seasonal work, since workers are often more likely to leave when the weather changes and the opportunities dry up. To combat this, we really make a concerted effort to keep our employees busy and on the job. If we can fill up their plate with work, so to speak, they’ll be less inclined to leave us in order to make a couple cents more per hour. 4. Keep your equipment well maintained We take great pride in keeping our fleet of machines clean, safe and running well. Quite often people tell us they want to come work with us because of the quality of our equipment. It doesn’t break down, and it has air conditioning, a radio and other amenities. Most importantly though, our equipment does its job. 5. Be transparent We make it a priority to share our corporate priorities, strategies and initiatives. It’s important for our employees to understand where we are as an organization, where we’re headed, and what we’re trying to achieve. We hold regular “town hall” meetings to explain what direction the company is going and inform them of the latest news and happenings. We encourage employees to speak up and get the information they need to do their jobs as efficiently and as effectively as possible. An example of encouraging communication is our “Speak Out For Safety” program, where anyone in our company can shut down a crew’s work just by pulling out a card and saying, “This doesn’t seem right. Can we review this?” 6. Stay up-to-date on the latest tools and technologies Because of the diminishing skill in our industry, companies like ours have begun to lean more on technology to improve efficiency and better meet the needs of customers. Drones are one good example. Global positioning satellite (GPS) technology, 3D and autonomous equipment also offer a ton of po- Source: Conexpo
