Choosing A Trucking Company

Fuel Costs And Operator Contracts One of the many things I learned at the 2014 TruckWorld in Toronto (April) was that ex-lease/owner operators don’t trust trucking company’s fuel compensation packages and potential lease/owner operators hesitate to get into the industry for the same reason. I met 1050 operators and about 250 ex- or potential operators. Nearly every ex/potential operator communicated the primary concern as fuel costs. Their secondary concern was truck maintenance but we rarely got into any dialogue about it. There are primarily three systems used by trucking company contracts to generate fuel cost stability for their operators: Fuel cap, fuel

surcharge and fuel rebate. There is no right or wrong system, only sufficient or insufficient formulas. No matter which of the three a trucking company provides, the important part is the figures (within the formulas) not the system itself. Fuel Cap was introduced as a major option around 2000/2001. It is the system where an operator pays no more than a set amount per litre/gallon. The system shot up in popularity as companies competed to attract operators. However, there were administrative difficulties in some lanes/loops (as well as abuse by some operators) and eventually many companies switched to a fuel surcharge. Fuel surcharge is, by

far, the most popular system available in operator contracts. It is the system where the trucking company pays an additional bonus in cents per mile whenever the cost of fuel rises (and reduces the bonus when fuel costs fall). The difficulty is, however, too many fuel surcharge formulas are insufficient to stabilize fuel costs for the average operator. If a company changes their fuel surcharge formula more than once every 2 years it should be clear that the formula has not been thought through enough. Fuel rebate may be the most confusing system out there, not because it IS confusing but because it’s not as popular as fuel surcharge. (Something different always seems

to be viewed that way). Fuel rebate calculates a cash rebate on the fuel cost rather than cents per mile “bonus”. If a fuel purchase was $600.00, there would be a deduction of $600.00 and a corresponding “deposit” of say $175.00 (net fuel cost of $425.00). The formula for calculating the deposit would be what the operator must understand in order to compare different contracts. Since there are three very different formats for adjusting fuel costs, comparing contracts can get somewhat confusing or even conflicting. If some variables are also subject to “change without notice”, the accuracy of comparisons can also disappear “without notice”. A lease operator (defined as being paid by the mile) should NEVER be exposed to market fuel cost variations. If the operator gets a consistent 6.5mpg they must have a consistent fuel deduction every month. If the fuel goes from $2.00 per gallon to $7.00 per gallon the lease operator should NEVER expe-

Page T-3 rience any variation in their pay statements. Unfortunately this is not the experience of operators under some contracts. The contracts are flawed, inconsistently calculated and poorly constructed. Too many times the necessary risk factors are either not properly accounted for or placed in the control of management who decide at their leisure. The control of net fuel costs must be in the formula, not in the hands of management. Otherwise, it becomes like Oliver Twist…

“…please sir, can I have some more?” …. more? MORE FUEL SURCHARGE? b Robert D Scheper operates an accounting and consulting firm in Steinbach, Manitoba. Continuing a longstanding tradition, Delphi Automotive PLC (NYSE: DLPH) was awarded a 2014 Automotive News PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers’ Contribution to Excellence) award for its ErgoMate Mechanical Assist System. The company now holds 17 PACE awards and is the leading recipient of the recognition. Additionally, Delphi was a finalist for its Multec Heated Tip Cold Start System and Friction Stir Welding process technology. “Delphi is focused on developing innovative products that consumers care about and customers demand,” said Jeff Owens, Delphi’s Chief Technology Officer. “Awards like PACE reinforce that Delphi leads in developing safe, green and connected products that matter.” For 20 years, the Automotive News PACE Awards have honored superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance among automotive suppliers. This prestigious award is recognized around the world as the industry benchmark for innovation. Delphi 2014 PACE Award Winner: Product Category: ErgoMate Mechanical Assist System As electrical content in vehicles has increased, so has the size of the connection systems, making them too large to be mated by hand. Delphi’s ErgoMate Mechanical Assist System enables vehicle line operators to be more successful by mating the connectors with a single-handed action that requires no prepositioning or awkward grip changes. This single, ergonomic mating action reduces assembly time, improves success with ‘blind mating’ of connectors, reduces mating force and has a strong tactical feel to provide positive feedback to the operator. Additionally, the system helps to improve quality and performance by solving warranty issues of

mismatched connections. Delphi’s 2014 PACE Award finalists: Manufacturing Process and Capital Equipment Category: Friction Stir Welding of sealed enclosure and heat exchangers for automotive electronics Delphi has optimized Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technology for two types of high-volume electronics manufacturing processes. The first integrates a liquid heat exchanger to the body of the electronic/electrical module, replacing bonded or clamped seals with robust leak-free hermetic joints. The second process welds aluminum covers and cast aluminum cases together to enclose electronics in under-hood applications. This process replaces traditional glue-and-screw methods. The implementation for both ultimately leads to lower product

costs and best-in-class environmental performance. Product Category: Multec Heated Tip Cold Start System First to market with an engine cold start system that includes an innovative fuel injector and a control system for ethanol-fueled vehicles, Delphi’s Multec Heated Tip Cold Start System rapidly heats ethanol to dramatically improve its vaporization characteristics. The system controller regulates power to a thermal conductor contained within each injector. The injector heaters quickly raise the temperature of the delivered ethanol during the engine crank and initial run. When these heated injectors are employed in conjunction with engine management system enhancements, ethanol cold start performance is similar to that of gasoline, eliminating the need for a redundant fuel system. By enabling reduced fueling during engine warm-up, these injectors also offer significant reductions in engine and tailpipe emissions. b

Americans Look To Ontario For Speed Limiter Rule An Ontario Ministry of Transportation enforcement program advisor recently travelled south of the border to shed light on Ontario’s successful launch of one of the first mandatory speed limiter programs in North America. At the 2014 Zonar Systems user conference held in San Antonio, MTO’s Kerri Wirachowsky hosted a session that delved into the Canadian experience with speed limiter regulations, as a similar rulemaking effort is reportedly imminent in the U.S. According to a report in Fleet Owner, Wirachowsky said Ontario and Quebec became the first two jurisdictions in North America to legislate speed limiter rules for heavy trucks as a way to boost safety on the

nized their speed limiter regulations at 65 mph, she expects a similar approach to take place between the provinces and the U.S. Wirachowsky cited a Transport Canada study, conducted after the rule took effect in Ontario in 2009, which determined that the number of heavy trucks that regularly exceeded 105 km/h had fallen to about 15%. That same study also claimed that if heavy trucks were governed at 65 mph, 100 million liters of diesel fuel could be saved – equivalent to removing 2,700 tractortrailers from the roadways – while reducing carbon emissions by 280,000 tons per year. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in 2012 determined that trucks equipped with speed control devices have a 50% lower crash rate compared to trucks without them. Jack Van Steenburg, FMCSA’s Assistant Administrator and Chief Safety Officer, told attendees that the U.S. speed limiter rule now awaits NHTSA’s final adjustments and is expected to be published in 2014. b

highway as well as reduce the industry’s emissions footprint. She said she expects there to be “a lot of similarities” between the upcoming U.S. speed limiter rule and the mandate in Ontario, which requires truck entering the province – U.S. trucks included – to have engine speed set to 105 km/h (around 65 mph) through the ECM. “You need to have the speed setting changed before you reach one of our weigh stations,” she said. “Drivers can also be charged for not allowing us to access their ECM.” She noted that over the last three years compliance with the speed limiter rule has remained steady at about 90%. And as Ontario and Quebec harmo-

Arne’s specializes in trailers for the gravel industry and has become a name to be trusted. Arne’s also has a rich history in the specialized lowbeds for oilfield, construction and equipment hauling.

Brandon dump bodies are top quality Canadian built gravel boxes offering full hardox construction rock boxes to ecomomy silage and gravel boxes.

BWS / EZ2LOAD are one of Canada’s top quality trailer manufacturers. They have broadened our trailer line in BC with different models of tag hydraulic detach and logging trailers.

The inaugural class of the Peterbilt Technician Institute graduated all 10 students representing 6 dealer groups, Peterbilt Motors Company recently announced. According to the company, all 10 participants in the program graduated and will now begin careers with Peterbilt dealerships throughout the country. “Congratulations to each graduate of the first ever Peterbilt Technician Institute and welcome to the Peterbilt team,” said Darrin Siver, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President, who spoke to the graduating class. “These graduates are now equipped to not only service Peterbilt vehicles and PACCAR Engines, but to embrace the standards of customer satisfaction, professionalism and operational efficiencies that make Peterbilt and its dealer network leaders in complete customer care.” All graduates received a certificate of completion from the Peterbilt Technician Institute as well as 10 other Peterbilt training certificates, including the PACCAR MX-13 Engine training certification. The 12-week program, held in conjunction with Universal Technical Institute at the school’s Dallas/ Fort Worth campus, featured exclusive classroom

and hands-on instruction of total vehicle diagnostics, maintenance and repairs, as well as essential education in customer service, dealership shop operations and laws and regulations. Course work was also conducted at Peterbilt’s Denton (Texas) training centre and manufacturing facility and a PacLease service facility in Dallas. The graduation ceremony included 65 attendees and was followed by a tour of Peterbilt’s Denton factory. The Peterbilt Technician Institute is planned to expand to other locations nationwide. It is part of UTI’s Manufacturer Specific Advanced Training (MSAT). The program is among the most comprehensive of its kind and will help ensure students graduate with working knowledge of the latest tools, technologies and diagnostic programs. The Peterbilt Technician Institute – which focuses on the complete lineup of Peterbilt vehicles and PACCAR Engines – will have a dedicated UTI instructor and Peterbilt will provide additional instructors for the courses, as well as trucks, components and software for students to work with. “This is a proven, innovative way to address the industry shortage of truck technicians and to pro-

vide our dealerships with trained, qualified service professionals who are ready to work,” says Peyton Harrell, Peterbilt’s Director of Dealer Development. “Our entire network of 270-plus dealerships throughout North America is excited about the Peterbilt Technician Institute and as the program expands, we anticipate every dealership to sponsor students for PTI. Graduates are offered employment with a Peterbilt dealership and this will help maintain our tradition of staffing the industry’s most highly trained and capable technicians available. Our customers expect the best service experience possible and this program will help Peterbilt and its dealers surpass those expectations.” b

New Spicer D-Series Steer Axles Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) recently announced that the company has developed an innovative new family of Spicer D-Series steer axles that will enable improved vehicle stopping power and reduced maintenance without the added weight that typically results from specifying air disc brakes. Available for applications with gross axle weight ratings from 10,000 to 14,600 pounds, the new Spicer D-Series steer axles will feature an Integrated Air Disc Brake (IADB) knuckle that allows fleets to specify air disc brakes without a net increase in weight over most S-cam drum brake axle systems. By eliminating a separate torque plate and fasteners, the new IADB feature maximizes the integrity of the axle and brake system, eliminates up to 76 pounds from the steer axle assembly, and reduces vehicle as-

sembly time. “Air disc brake popularity is on the rise,” said Pat D’Eramo, President of Dana Commercial Vehicle Driveline Technologies. “We are pleased to offer our customers the opportunity to improve the performance, maintenance, and safety of their vehicles without sacrificing payload and fuel economy.” The new steer axles build on patented, market-leading advancements used throughout Dana’s line of Spicer D-Series axles, including two-drawkey king pin retention, tie rod end sealing, and a lightweight beam. These features work together to enhance durability, reduce maintenance, and improve alignment capability. These Spicer D-Series steer axles are the latest in a long history of patented innovations engineered by Dana to help commercialvehicle fleets save fuel and

reduce maintenance. At TMC last year, Dana introduced the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem axle system and higher torque-rated Spicer SPL 350 main driveshaft and mating SPL 250 inter-axle shaft. A 2014 Automotive News PACE award finalist, this system features a market-leading design for a variety of Class 8 applications that increases fuel economy, improves reliability, reduces vehicle weight, and decreases total ownership costs. At MATS 2013, Dana launched the Spicer EconoTrek 6x2 tandem axle, a durable, lightweight configuration that improves performance, reduces maintenance, and increases fuel economy for heavy-duty line haul tractors. Dana received a 2013 Automotive News PACE Award for the company’s Spicer Diamond Series driveshaft, the first to com-

bine dissimilar metals, successfully pairing steel end fittings with a single-piece, high-strength aluminum tube. The new design can also eliminate the center bearing used in traditional two-piece driveshafts, reducing component wear and installation costs. As a result, this technology can reduce vehicle weight by up to 100 pounds, improving fuel economy, load-carrying capacity, or both. For more information, visit www.dana.com/commercialvehicle. b

Using gasoline in modified truck diesel engines can result in more than 50 percent fuel efficiency if the combustion process is done correctly, according to research conducted at Lund University in Sweden. Researchers say that by employing a partially premixed combustion (PPC) process, fuel consumption for gasoline engines could reportedly be cut in half. As reported by SAE Magazine, the concept engine has been developed to achieve the right amount of ignition delay between fuel injection and combustion, during which the mixing that happens produces minimal amounts of soot and nitric oxide. The result opens the possibility of a new generation of engines that would not require catalytic converters, the university claims. Bengt Johansson, Professor of Combustion

Engines at Lund University, and a 20-plus-year member of SAE International, said researchers hope to eventually achieve 60% efficiency with this type of PPC process. “With late injection the emissions of HC and CO got all the way down to US10 levels without a catalyst as no fuel was trapped in crevices. With sufficient mixing before combustion, soot can be kept low and NOx can be handled with EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). The most important [aspect] is perhaps that it is possible to control burn rate with the fuel injection strategy. We can get fast enough burn with any combustion timing by adjusting the level of stratification using multiple injection”, Johansson told the publication. The university says PPC is “a very promising concept” that it will continue to pursue. b

Delphi Launches New Diesel Common Rail System Family Designed to meet the significant market challenges faced by automakers around the world, Delphi Automotive PLC (NYSE:DLPH) is launching a new family of Diesel Common Rail systems including diesel solenoid injectors, fuel pumps, Engine Control Units (ECU) and rails for light- and mediumduty applications. The new family of technologies, which will be available later this year on a new engine of a major European car manufacturer, was introduced during the 35th annual International Vienna Motor Symposium, held May 8-9 at the Congress Centre in Hofburg, Austria. This new high-performance, modular family of Diesel Common Rail Systems will help car manufacturers improve fuel efficiency,” said John Fuerst, President Delphi Diesel Systems. “Our engineers’ innovative concepts are dedicated to assisting our

customers in meeting increasingly strict emissions standards, while maintaining the performance levels consumers expect. Delphi’s modular approach for its common rail systems allows robust design with a range of performances matching different engine needs. Integrated, innovative features offer new perspectives to diesel engine design and performance. With Delphi’s approach, the OEMs won’t need to modify their engines to fit Delphi systems. The modular approach utilized for the development helps engine manufacturers to integrate the technologies in their engine family with the possibility to optimize the injection performance in the same environment,” explained Fuerst. The new family of diesel fuel injection equipment offers improved performance through injection pressure increased up to 2,500 bar; leakage reduction; and increased multiple injection

Kenworth De Mont-Laurier Opens Dealership In NW Quebec Kenworth de MontLaurier has opened a new parts and service location in Mont-Laurier, a rural area about 240 kilometers northwest of Montreal, on the Trans-Canada Highway/Quebec Route 117. “This new location provides operators in the Hautes-Laurentides region a more convenient location to get service for their trucks,” said Luc Lefebvre, General Manager of Kenworth de Mont-Laurier. The dealership is located on a 22-acre site on Boulevard Albiny Paquette (Trans-Canada Highway/ Quebec Route 117) about

a mile east of Quebec Route 309. Route 117 is a provincial highway within Quebec, between Montreal and the Quebec/Ontario border. It is the only direct route between southern Quebec and the HautesLaurentides region. The Haute-Laurentides region has a growing economy dominated by timber harvesting, mining and agriculture, industries with a high demand for medium to heavy duty trucks and truck parts and service, Lefebvre said. “With the popularity and reputation of Kenworth trucks, the high visibility of

optimization, as the fuel injectors are capable of up to nine injections per cycle. These innovations translate into better injection control and better combustion, therefore reducing fuel consumption, CO2 and other emissions. The fuel efficiency that diesel engines offer allows them to successfully penetrate both the passenger and commercial vehicles,” said Fuerst. “Their bestin-class fuel economy will continue to ensure diesel engines are a popular choice across Europe and in many other markets. Benefits of Delphi’s new Diesel Common Rail systems family include: • Low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions through improved combustion; weight reduction; and hydraulic, mechanical and electrical efficiency • Cost-effective and flexible solutions through simpler, modular component features and optimized functions • Fun to drive and reliable through low combustion noise; high performance and worldwide diesel fuel robustness. b the property with more than 600 feet of frontage facing a major provincial route and easy access to Route 117, Kenworth de Mont-Laurier will become the dealer of choice for more truck fleets and operators,” Lefebvre predicted. “The property offers truck drivers room to manoeuvre and park their trucks and trailers as well as the space in the building to expand the truck dealership and add more service bays and parts warehouse space as our business grows. We will also expand our hours of operation as the business grows.” Kenworth de Mont-Laurier, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, is located in an 18,700 square-foot facility at 2076, boulevard Albiny Paquette (Quebec Route 117). The location offers convenient parts delivery and includes a comfortable waiting area with wi-fi access for truck drivers to check their emails and submit reports while waiting for their trucks to be serviced.
