My Twist with Ray Haight

Make Time For Your Health S

ome time ago I wrote an article called “It’s Time That I Made Time For That.” The main point I was attempting to make was that we all get caught up in getting ahead, and at times, can forget about the family at home and how our crazy lifestyles impact theirs. In this particular article I was talking about making time for the family and for those relationships that we all need and cherish. In summary, the article was about balance, which in the trucking world, can easily be written off as a group of people sitting in a circle holding hands and singing “Kumbaya my friend”. Talking about a life balance (family, career, health and friends) has not been something that makes much sense for a typical truck driver given the lifestyle necessary to do the job. This has been seen

as a topic for folks with too much time on their hands that is overflowing with good intentions. You know, the folks who possess that very strong human resource gene that have left us all confused over what is politically correct and what is not! So why do I bring this all back up again? I do it because it occurred to me that there might be something to this whole idea. I was asked recently to participate in a pilot program for a product that will be coming to market over the next three to six months called “The Healthy Trucker”. I will tell you some details on my goals and where I’m at with the program a little later. But what occurred to me was that we all get lost in our own little worlds and sometimes we just take the status quo as being etched in stone. Forward-thinking com-

panies with nine o’clock to five o’clock workers, no matter what sector of the economy they are in, know that if their people have good life balance then they will get higher volume, better quality and longer lasting employees. A quote from Wikipedia reads “Organizations play a large part in how their employees deal with worklife balance. Some companies have taken proactive measures in providing programs and initiatives to help their employees cope with work-life balance.” When I look at typical business environments where people go home every night and live their lives, then come in to work and do the same routine five days a week, I can understand employers discounting the efforts required to be effective on the subject. It’s your free time so deal with it any way that suits you. Want to be a couch potato? Cool. Want to be active and get involved with physical fitness? Your family? Your community? Fill your boots. But when I think of a driver and the irregularity of the work hours and the fact that in many cases

there is no regularity in the work week, it starts to make sense to me that this is an area that needs to be explored to a greater extent. We all know that as an industry we are not attracting many young folks to trucking for many reasons. One that would be right near the top would be lifestyle! Add to that, we have all read and heard that the sedentary lifestyle of a truck driver is contributing to an array of health issues from high blood pressure to diabetes, sleep apnea and premature death, etc. I, like many of you, have a history of heart issues in my family. My Dad, a truck driver, had a fatal heart attack at age 50. My grandfather, an engineer on the New York Central Wabash was a heart attack survivor. An uncle, an engineer on the CPR died of a heart attack. Gee, I wonder what’s in my future if I don’t start paying attention NOW? I have done many seminars and the reoccurring theme when I discuss retention and recruitment has been the same, and I close each session with a simple quote, “Create

Page T-3 a positive company spirit and a positive company culture, with a sense of community in a valuedriven organization, and you will reap the benefits of low Driver Turnover”. Most of you drivers who are reading this have not had to endure one of my talks, so I will break this down for you. What I am trying to tell folks who run trucking companies is that open door policies are great things if done right, but most companies who say they have these scenarios actually have something quite different. What they have is an open front door and an open back door, and many drivers walk right through and move on to the next opportunity. What they need to do is create programs that make it difficult for you drivers to even consider leaving the company you’re at, and the best way to do that is to create a sense of community, of caring services, that help to establish a life balance for the Drivers and Owner Operators. Bringing drivers health and wellness options is the next logical offering to Drivers and Owner

Operators for trucking companies. It makes perfect sense and might just bring the balance needed for a driver to be successful! This brings me back to the “Healthy Trucker” program. I am now in week five of this program. I have lost five pounds and my goal is to get to 200 pounds by January 1, 2014. I am six feet tall and have been slightly overweight for what now feels like my whole life. So far I like the program. I record my meals every day and I have talked to a registered dietician and a physical fitness coach. I get texts each day that are hints on how to make smart decisions on what I include in my diet and it seems to be working. I am also looking at how a driver on the road could use this and I can see how folks on the road could benefit from it. It is driver friendly, no doubt about it. I will keep you updated as my deadline approaches. You can find more information on “The Healthy Trucker” at www.healthy trucker.com. b Contact Ray J. Haight at Ray. Haight@truckpost.ca

Cummins Announces 5.0L V8 Diesel For On-Highway Markets Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) recently announced it will begin producing the ISV5.0, a new 5-liter V8 diesel engine designed to power pickup-and-delivery vehicles, other light- and medium-duty trucks, school buses and motorhomes. The ISV5.0 extends Cummins’ range of cleandiesel engines for North American vehicles, and features industry-leading technology that delivers performance and a low total cost of ownership to customers. “The ISV5.0 represents the next dimension in fuel economy and performance as Cummins continues to broaden our on-highway product line,” said Dave Crompton, Cummins Vice President and General Manager, Engine Business. The ISV5.0 has been designed to easily fit where a comparable V8 or V10 gasoline engine was previously installed. The ISV5.0 brings together a Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) cylinder block, forged steel

crankshaft, high-strength aluminum alloy heads, and composite valve covers to offer maximum durability in a lightweight package. These features, along with dual overhead camshafts, also reduce noise, vibration and harshness. Leading engine technology produces better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. With multiple injection events driven by integrated electronic controls, the ISV5.0’s fuel system and Cummins VGT Variable Geometry Turbocharger contribute to a very impressive peak torque of 560 lb-ft and quick throttle response. Ratings from 200 (149 kW) to 275 horsepower (205 kW) are available. A two-stage fuel filter system for the ISV5.0 features the latest NanoNet media from Cummins Filtration, to ensure that the fuel system is fully protected against fuel contamination. NanoNet’s unique construction provides lower fuel-flow restriction and traps greater than 99 per-

cent of all particles as small as 4 microns, smaller than the naked eye can see. Cummins Filtration’s expertise also extends to a high-efficiency coalescing filter to eliminate crankcase hydrocarbon emissions and oil mist, further adding to the clean-engine credentials of the ISV5.0. The engine’s air handling and emissions control technology draws upon Cummins’ extensive expertise in emissions technology. The Company’s VGT Turbocharger, cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Cummins Emission Solutions’ Aftertreatment System, featuring a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), reduce the emission of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) to near-zero levels while delivering better performance and fuel economy. “Every day, drivers will appreciate the smooth, quiet operation of the ISV5.0,” said Jim Katzenmeyer, Executive Engineer - V8 Program. “In addition, the fuel savings offered by the ISV5.0 result in fewer greenhouse gas emissions — a great environmental benefit.”

The Cummins ISV5.0 will serve customers in the United States and Canada, and will be certified to the near-zero NOx and PM emissions levels required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). At launch, it will also meet Greenhouse Gas (GHG) requirements through 2016, and 2015 Air Resources Board (ARB) standards, including on-board diagnostics. The ISV5.0, along with the 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel for pickup trucks, will be manufactured at the Columbus Engine Plant. Production of the ISV5.0 will start during the fourth quarter of 2014. “Our customers want the ISV5.0 engine to come with the world-class service network and customer support that Cummins already provides to them,” said Jeff Jones, Cummins Vice President, North American Engine Business. “The support of this engine will easily be integrated into Cummins distributors and authorized dealer shops, and into customer operations with fleets that are running the broad range of dependable Cummins power.” b

Driver Profile by Kathryn Thorpe Klassen

Field To Freight R

on Mahar spent his life on the farm. Just as his father, grandfather, and great grandfather have all done before him. He is raising his family in the same home that his father grew up in, and working the same land. The tools have changed, the scenery hasn’t. Neither has the fact that good years come and go on the farm. “Farming is still and has always been a gamble. Rarely are there two good years in a row, but it seems that bad years often come in two and three,” says Ron. “Thankfully, nowadays we have insurance. Back in my grandfather’s day they just had to tough it out. If the crop failed, my grandmother had to get the family through the winter with what she’d grown in the vegetable garden and

got from the chicken coop. It couldn’t have been easy with eight mouths to feed.” Although insurance has helped keep food on the Mahar’s family table a number of times, in 1996 Ron knew he had to diversify if he wanted to get ahead of the game. “When you farm 2000 acres, floods, drought, bugs, they can all make or break you.” “We had been hauling our crops to the elevators in tandem trucks for a long time. On a good year when there was plenty to haul, it would take me, my father and my brother all winter. We would barely get the bins cleaned out in time for the next crop to go in,” says Ron, “I knew there was a more efficient way, I just didn’t know how I was going to pay for it.” With a partial loan from

his father, a bit from the bank, and his personal savings, Ron purchased his first set of Super B Trains. “The trailers were only a couple years old, but the truck was an old ’83 Mack complete with suicide cruise and not much else.” That fall Ron hauled all of his own grain and was pleasantly surprised to have the daunting task completed before Christmas. “It was sure nice to get it over with, but then I was facing a few months with no work. I threw it out there to a couple of neighbours to see if they were interested in any help moving their grain.” “Looking back, I sure did a bad job of calculating my costs, because I think those first few neighbours got one hell of a deal. I think it probably cost me money. It’s all good though. I finally caught on to the fact that I should try making money at it rather than just passing the long Saskatchewan winter away and working for free.” By 1999 Ron had two trucks on the road, and he was paying his brother to drive full-time September through to April, and had two additional drivers to

take over the rest of the year when Ron and his brother were busy farming. By 2001, he had added another truck to the fleet as well as two full-time, yearround drivers. “My brother and I were having trouble fitting it all in. Between the farming, dealing with customers, lining up deliveries and keeping the books, we were both way too busy, so we decided to split the driving of the other rig.” The business of hauling grain off farm to elevator is not for the weak hearted. “We work hard. Really hard. You don’t come home clean or with a bit of grease on your hands. You come home covered in grain dust from head to toe, coughing, itchy.” “There aren’t a lot of new farm yards on the prairies. Most of them were built decades ago when tandem trucks were the latest and greatest. Manoeuvring a set of trains around these yards gets interesting. You can’t move a grain bin and the augers only reach so far, so you get awful creative with how you get your truck in there.” “Rarely is there a scale anywhere nearby. I had to learn how to use the air

You’d be surprised at how often the truck cops are cruising around out here with their portable scales.” “We shovel a lot of grain. Constantly setting up the sweeps inside the bins to clean them out, shovelling, sweeping. It’s part of the service we offer our customers, but I’ll admit it sometimes gets old doing all the heavy lifting.” The Mahar brothers are home every night. Neither are anxious to ever get out on the road for weeks on end the way a lot of truck drivers do. But in exchange they have to put up with a lot of other disadvantages that come with their chosen freight. “Doing business with your neighbours can be frustrating at times. Most are good, but once in a while they figure you should be doing it for cost since you’re neighbours. Especially in a tight year. Everyone wants, or actually expects a discount. I’ve

BIENFAIT (ESTEVAN AREA) Box 369 Highway 18 East Industrial Drive Bienfait,

lost a couple friends to it.” “When there is a bad farming year, it’s a double whammy to the wallet. You get hit on grain prices or poor crops. So do all your customers, which means they have less to haul, meaning less business for the trucks.” It may be a lot of hard work, but there are plenty of bonuses as well. “I stay in touch with the community, get to see a lot of my friends and I’m probably up on more of the gossip than anyone else around!” b

American Trucking Associations recently applauded Reps. Larry Bucshon (R-Ind.) and Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) for introducing legislation to ensure that if the federal government sets standards for sleep apnea screening and testing of professional truck and bus drivers, those standards are established through an informed rulemaking process. “ATA believes that if the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration wants to regulate sleep apnea, it should do so through the normal, established regulatory process

rather than through informal guidance,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “The rulemaking process allows for medical experts, the regulated community, including professional drivers, to provide valuable data and input for the agency to consider in developing its regulations. A formal rulemaking will also require an analysis of the benefits and costs of regulating sleep apnea, an analysis not required for the issuance of guidance.” FMCSA officials have indicated they intend to issue guidance as a means

of quickly addressing sleep apnea in the professional driver population. “This is not an insignificant step,” Graves said. “There are more than 3 million professional truck drivers and the cost of screening, diagnosis and treatment for sleep apnea could easily exceed $1 billion annually. Taking a step as potentially costly as that shouldn’t be undertaken lightly and outside of the normal processes.” Bucshon and Lipinski’s bill is also supported by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, the American Bus Association, the United Motorcoach Association, the National School Transportation Association and the United Brotherhood of Teamsters. b

Central Freight Lines Upgrades Fleet With Freightliner CNG Trucks Freightliner Trucks recently announced that Central Freight Lines, Inc. added 100 2014 Freightliner M2 112 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tractors equipped with Cummins Westport ISL G natural gas engines to its fleet of more than 1,600 trucks. Headquartered in Waco, Texas, Central Freight Lines is a lessthan-truckload (LTL) general commodities carrier providing transportation to both emerging businesses and Fortune 500 industry leaders since 1925. The Central Freight Lines network consists of 51 terminals throughout the Southwest and is nationally recognized as one of the safest carriers on the road today. According to Don Orr, President and CEO, Central Freight Lines is partnering to build new CNG stations in Fort Worth, Houston and San

Antonio as a result of the decision to convert the fleet to CNG technology. Central Freight Lines also considered the opportunity to reduce dependency on foreign fuels and support a clean-air policy as it supplemented its current fleet with CNG. Additionally, Central Freight Lines was able to take advantage of a Texas Emissions Reduction Plan (TERP) program that gives participants the opportunity to trade a less-efficient truck towards a cost reduction on each new CNG-fuelled truck purchased. “We are committed to energy conservation and a cleaner environment,” said Orr. “In 2012, we purchased CNG tractors that have been servicing the Houston area with proven efficiencies. As a result, we decided to continue investing in CNG tractors, specifi-

cally Freightliner trucks because of their reliability and the company’s customer support.” The Freightliner M2 112 with natural gas offers superior manoeuvrability and visibility with the ability to reduce fuel costs and exhaust emissions. It can be spec’d for between 260 and 320 horsepower and up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque. “We like Freightliner trucks for their quality. They provide superior uptime and we get maximum utility over a long period. We also appreciate the dealer network. It’s supportive and professional,” said Orr. “Central Freight Lines wanted to lower its operating costs, while staying in line with its commitment to energy conservation and a cleaner environment,” said Robert Carrick, Natural Gas Sales Manager, Freightliner Trucks. “Freightliner Trucks leads the industry in developing alternative technologies to meet the demand for environmentally-friendly trucks that get the job done.” b

Federal Labour Minister Meets With AMTA Canada’s Minister of Labour, Dr. Kellie Leitch, recently met with AMTA board and senior staff to discuss labour-related issues affecting the road transportation industry. “We discussed various issues such as the driver shortage, training and testing concerns, work related injuries such as falls, back injuries and carpal tunnel

syndrome,” said AMTA Executive Director Don Wilson. “We also discussed changing the National Occupation Classification (NOC) for truck driving to skilled from unskilled status. The NOC is used by the federal government and provides a standardized language for describing the work performed by Canadians in the labour market.”

“While this is not in her jurisdiction she does support the change and feels that we are moving in the right direction by proposing mandatory training requirements for commercial drivers in Alberta,” said Wilson. The meeting took place at the AMTA office in Edmonton on August 19th and was attended by the Minister, her ADM of Compliance, Operations and Program Development Labour Programs, Kin Choi and her communications team. b

Successful Dealer Honours Long-Time Mack Trucks Dealer Mack Trucks dealer TEC Equipment, Inc. won the Successful Dealer Award for exceptional sales and service as well as excellence in community and civic engagement. “It was clear from their nomination that David Thompson and his team at TEC have made a commitment to their employees and the communities they serve,” said Jason Cannon, Successful Dealer Online Editor. “Ultimately, it was important to us that this award recognize a well-rounded, successful business – one that is also a great place to work, not simply a financially successful one. And we believe we found all that and more with TEC.” TEC received the award during the Commercial Vehicle Outlook Conference in Dallas after receiving a nomination from Mack Trucks. Judges considered the follow-

ing criteria in determining the award winner: environmental stewardship efforts, customer education and support, staff training and dealership marketing. Mack nominated the dealership because of its strong employee training efforts, outstanding customer education, innovative marketing and investments in their local community above and beyond what is generally expected of a dealer. “We are very pleased to be recognized nationally by Successful Dealer,” said David A. Thompson, TEC Equipment, Inc. President and CEO. “Our success doesn’t come from one person. We have the best people and customers in the industry.” The TEC Equipment, Inc. network is a multipoint, full-service truck dealership group headquartered in Portland, Ore. TEC Equipment has multiple locations along the Interstate-5 corri-

dor including Portland, Wilsonville, Eugene and Medford, Ore.; TacomaFife, Wash.; and RenoSparks and Las Vegas, Nevada. Under the TEC of California, Inc. banner, TEC Equipment has dealerships in La Mirada, Oakland, San Francisco, Stockton, Fontana and Sylmar. “The TEC Equipment dealership group has been one of our most innovative and proactive dealers in the Mack Trucks dealer network, delivering a truly impressive level of customer support,” said John Walsh, Mack Vice President of Marketing. “Not only is TEC Equipment committed to employees, customers and their local community, they also are committed to helping Mack Trucks grow our presence on the West Coast, and we are honoured to have them as a partner.” Successful Dealer, produced by Randall-Reilly, provides dealers, repair garages and distributors with information on sales, marketing, service and operations through a robust website and daily and weekly newsletters. b

Goodyear’s Latin America Business Wins Trade Americas Award The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company will be recognized by the Latin Trade Group with its first Trade Americas Award, at the 19th edition of the BRAVO Business Awards, to be held on October 25 in Miami. Goodyear will be honoured with the BRAVO Trade Americas Award for its valuable contributions fostering the development of small and medium size enterprises development in the Latin America region. “It is an honour for us at Goodyear to be recog-

nized for our working relationship and the collaboration developed with our distributors throughout the region,” said Jaime Szulc, President of Goodyear’s Latin America region. “Our joint effort over the course of many fruitful decades has led us to grow and succeed together in the Latin American market. It will be a pleasure to share this award with our distributors.” Goodyear has one of the most efficient tire distribution networks in Latin America, deriving

from the strategic partnerships and teamwork developed with its distributors. Goodyear’s success in the region, he said, is due largely to the emphasis placed on listening to the end user by the company and its distributors. A leading tire company in Latin America, Goodyear opened its first sales office in the region in 1915 and its first manufacturing plant in 1938. With its regional headquarters in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Goodyear employs about 5,400 people and manufactures its products in seven facilities in five countries in the region. The company’s Latin America business posted sales of more than $2 billion in 2012. b

TRP Offers Complete Line Of Aftermarket HVAC Parts Operators of all makes of trucks and buses can depend on TRP HVAC replacement parts for reliable, efficient performance. TRP offers a complete line including condensers, compressors, heater cores, receiver dryers, blower motors and air compressor clutches. “Truck operators spend a lot of time behind the wheel, so maintaining a consistent and comfortable cab temperature is important for driver productivity, health and safe-

ty,” said Jeff Hughes, TRP Development Manager. TRP’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system components are engineered and tested to be efficient and environmentally friendly. All of TRP’s HVAC replacement parts are manufactured and tested to meet or exceed industry standards. Receiver dryers The receiver dryer is designed to store excess refrigerant, filter out contaminants and absorb moisture.

“Anytime the HVAC system is opened, you should replace the truck’s receiver dryer. Once the system has been opened, it becomes too easy for the receiver dryer to get saturated with moisture. A saturated dryer will cause acid build-up in the A/C system, which will often cause a plugged expansion valve and a possible seized compressor,” Hughes said. TRP receiver dryers feature a spring-loaded design that keeps desiccant under pressure. This prevents desiccant from moving around and becoming pulverized into a finer powder and escaping from the dryer. Loose desiccant can clog orifice tubes and expansion valves and eventually contaminate the compressor. “It is also important that the canister is the right size. If the canister is too small, the flow of

refrigerant is restricted, resulting in poor performance. Too large and the system won’t cool properly. TRP receiver dryers have an amount of desiccant that’s appropriate for the intended application,” Hughes said. Blower motors The TRP HVAC program also features replacement blower motors that operate to industry specifications, ensuring the windshield defrosts quickly and completely. “Blower motors fail slowly over time, limiting visibility in the corners and edges of the windshield as airflow is reduced. TRP blower motors are spec’d with high quality components to ensure 5,000 to 15,000 hours of operation versus many in the market that offer only 1,000 to 2,000 hours,” Hughes said. The performance and power supply of TRP blower motors match those on original blower motors, so they last as long as the motors they replace and produce the same amount of airflow. TRP blower motors also include radio frequency interference protection.

November 2013 “Since the specifications for the shaft, case, insulation and rotation are the same as the OEM parts, operators don’t have to replace the blower wheel or make other costly system modifications when installing a TRP blower motor,” Hughes said. Heater cores TRP heater cores provide strong, consistent heating by using a “blendair” system for temperature control. “This is a design that’s been used successfully for years in the automotive industry,” Hughes said. The blendair system eliminates the need for a water valve to regulate coolant flow through the heater core. TRP heater cores are made of aluminum alloy, so they’re strong and lighter weight, a key consideration for truck and bus operators watching their vehicles’ weight. HVAC compressors “When truck operators need to replace their HVAC compressors, they should use TRP,” Hughes

said. “The compressor is the heart of the HVAC system, so quality should never be compromised when replacing it. TRP compressors use the highest quality components to ensure the longest life.” “Whatever their make or model, truck and bus operators can depend on TRP for quality HVAC replacement parts,” Hughes said. TRP TRP parts for trucks, trailers and buses are available through authorized retailers that include Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF dealerships around the world. Supported by a worldwide network of parts and service professionals, TRP offers dependable aftermarket products that are designed and tested to exceed customers’ expectations for quality and value. Regardless of the age, make or application of the vehicle, TRP is the all-makes answer. For more information, visit www.TRPParts.com. b

IMT Introduced New Mid-Range Articulating Cranes At ICUEE 2013 Iowa Mold Tooling Co. Inc. (IMT), an Oshkosh Corporation company (NYSE:OSK), was pleased to introduce new and improved mid-range articulating cranes at the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE), Oct. 1 – 3 in Louisville, Ky. The 9 tm, 10 tm, 11 tm and 12 tm IMT models have been enhanced with new options, features and ratings to meet unique application needs. With superior lift and reach capabilities and reduced weight, the new cranes offer customers increased productivity and payload capacity. The 9/65, 10/72, 11/78 and 12/86 cranes have ratings ranging from 65,100 foot-pounds (9 tm) to 86,075 foot-pounds (11.9 tm) and maximum lift capacities from 8,380 pounds (3,800 kilograms) to 10,230 pounds (4,640 kilograms). New features include SL (single link) or DL (dual link) options, 15-degree “overbending” and weight

reduced by 10 to 15 percent from previous models. Each crane can be fitted with up to five hydraulic extensions to provide application-specific reach. “IMT customers need lift and reach capabilities that are tailored to their challenging applications,” said John Field, Product Manager of Material Handling at IMT. “Our new mid-range articulating crane models offer an elevated level of technology that increases productivity — with lower weight that allows for more payload capacity.” One of the most significant changes to the range is the addition of the SL (single link) or DL (dual link) options. The options offer customers distinct advantages depending on their specific lifting needs. The single-power plus link-arm system: • Provides high lifting capacity when the boom system is fully extended • Offers great strength, regular speed and flexibility in the outer boom com-

t

bined with high speed in the main boom’s extreme positions at the column • Is suited for loading and unloading tasks at a low height far away from the vehicle • Features high speed in extreme positions at the mast, which makes the boom system ideal for fast-grab work • Allows cranes with the link arm on the outer boom to work particularly well with the stretched boom system at moderate height and at long reach The dual-power plus link-arm system: • Offers the best lifting capacities under all conditions • Provides precise and regular movements in the entire working area • Is particularly well-suited for long reaches and lifting in high positions with demanding equipment (such as fly-jib and winch) • Enables the crane to solve many different lifting tasks and is an ideal all-around crane • Works particularly well with the stretch boom system at any height and

any reach Another new feature of the cranes is “overbending,” which means the working area between the main boom and the jib is no less than 195°. Overbending offers greater flexibility when working through narrow passages and under overhead obstructions; the ability to lift maximum loads in all boom positions; and a lower total height when the crane is stowed on the truck body. The new cranes feature ultra-high tensile steel, which provides lower

Page T-11 weight, high lift capacity at long reaches and increased payload capabilities. The mounting space required has been reduced to 2 feet 5 inches (0.8 meters). “The minimized width and lower weight of the new cranes allows for additional truck configuration possibilities and increased payload,” Field said. A key feature standard on all IMT articulating crane models is the RCL (Rated Capacity Limiter) 5300. The RCL system monitors the crane’s load moment, operation and function. In an

overload situation, the system warns the operator and interrupts the distribution of oil for crane functions, while allowing functions that reduce load moment to remain operational. The RCL 5300 cooperates with the user and compensates when the RCL senses a situation requiring intervention. Additional features of the new articulating crane models include: • A radio remote control equipped with an information center that conContinued on page T-12

PACCAR Begins Production Of DAF Trucks In Brazil PACCAR recently held an opening ceremony to launch its new DAF assembly plant in Brazil. The ceremony, led by Mark Pigott, PACCAR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and Parana Governor, Beto Richa, was attended by state and local officials, DAF Brazil dealers, suppliers, transport companies and business and educational leaders. “PACCAR is pleased to officially dedicate our new DAF Brazil factory,” said Mark Pigott. “The 300,000-square-foot assembly facility on 569 acres is a high-technology, environmentally friendly plant that will assemble the premium-quality DAF XF, CF and LF vehicles. The factory will build DAF trucks for Brazil and the South American market. Our DAF dealers have invested in the newest and most modern distribution network in the country to support our growing customers.”

“We are proud to be able to drive the first DAF truck made in Brazil,” said Governor Richa. “The $320 million investment by PACCAR reinforces Paraná’s commitment to attract high-quality jobs to the state. This DAF facility will stimulate economic growth and contribute to an improved quality of life in the region.” DAF’s premium-quality vehicles have achieved industry leadership in Europe. “DAF is the European leader in on-highway tractors and has achieved a market share of 15.8 percent in the above 16-tonne segment this year. Customers appreciate the robust quality leadership, low operating costs and excellent resale value of DAF trucks and PACCAR engines,” said Ron Armstrong, PACCAR president. “The above six tonnes truck market in Brazil is projected to be over 140,000 units in 2013, with further

Western Star Develops HighCapacity Water Tank Truck Western Star Trucks, Inc. recently announced the availability of a 6,500 gallon water tank truck for the 4900XD. Developed in collaboration with Klein Products, Inc., the truck features a Klein K650 water tank to provide a more efficient road dust control operation for construction, quarry, and mining applications.

Ontario, Calif.-based Klein Products is a worldwide manufacturer of water distributing equipment, patented pump systems and related components. Western Star sought Klein to develop the specialized 4900XD water tank truck based on its ability to outfit the vehicle with a highvolume water distribution system. Available to order in a day cab configuration, the Western Star 4900XD is equipped with Klein’s largest available water tank for Class 8 vehicles, reducing the need for frequent refill trips when spraying mine roads, waste rock dumps and other exposed surfaces. “We’re proud to team up with another premium brand to provide our mining and construction customers a highly efficient truck to tackle the harshest dust conditions,” said John Tomlinson, Heavy Vocational Sales Manager, Western Star. “Together

growth expected in future years,” shared Bob Christensen, PACCAR executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. “The largest and fastest growing segment of the Brazilian truck market is the premium segment where DAF has launched its flagship model XF-105 vehicle.” “We look forward to manufacturing the full range of industry-leading DAF trucks powered by PACCAR engines for customers in Brazil and South America,” shared Marco Davila, DAF Brazil President. “The independent dealer network in Brazil consists of 20 service locations in 2013 and will expand to 40 locations in 2014. The first DAF model produced in this plant is the premium DAF XF-105, designed for long-haul applications. In the future, the factory will also produce the versatile CF and LF models. The DAF CF is designed for a wide number of applications, ranging from regional transportation to heavy construction. The DAF LF is ideal for distribution and urban delivery.” b with Klein, we’re committed to offering an affordable solution to reduce health and equipment hazards, and ultimately help our customers be more successful on the job site.” The 4900XD features an extremely low center of gravity and is available with a Rollover Protection System (ROPS). The truck is also spec’d with outboard cab mounts and up to 20,000 lb. front and 70,000 lb. rear suspension to maximize stability on uneven terrain and provide a more comfortable ride. Additionally, the Klein K650 tank’s distinctive trapezoid design greatly improves rear visibility for drivers. Spec’d with a sturdy, custom-drilled 3.8 million RBM steel frame chassis, galvannealed steel cab and aluminum fenders, the 4900XD water tank truck provides critical protection and long-term durability, even in the most adverse job conditions. The 4900XD can be equipped with a fuel efficient Detroit DD15, DD16 or DDC 60 Tier III engine, each easily accessible through the truck’s threepiece butterfly hood. b
