To Lease Or To Own? by Robert Scheper A question I get asked at least once a month (usually more) is, should I lease my next truck or should I own? Today the answer is almost universal. If you can own, own! Leasing should be the last resort. Prior to 2000/2001 the answer may have been less concrete. In fact, if someone analyzed the leases prior to 2000, the terms were basically the same as owning; sometimes the operator could even walk away from a lease with minimal penalty (something not readily available today). As discussed in my first book, lease/ownership tax differences are virtually non-existent. First of all, taxes are NEVER the reason to upgrade equipment anyway (fuel and maintenance should be everything). Nobody saves/loses taxes by deciding to buy/lease. The only thing that happens is deferring of taxes or not deferring of taxes.

Ultimately, the only real considerations before 2000 were the interest rates. If you ask any old timers about the 2000 recession they will tell you the impact it had on trucking. There were literally farmer’s fields filled with repossessed trucks. Financing companies lost millions and some were so weak they had to be consolidated. The financing industry was in bad shape. Executives were forced to do something about the losses. They had to make money, secure money, and as fast as they could. They started to use more aggressive leasing plans. Executives also realized a certain percentage of all leases were never paid out to the end of the term. For instance, trucks were traded off in the third year rather than the operator making all 48 payments. The new leases included the “interest”
to the final 48th payment (it’s never called interest in the leases). This means that the operator was forced to pay all 48 payments even though he bought it out (traded it in) some time before the end. They also started leasing trucks over five years rather than the standard four (allowing more “interest” to be paid). The different lease formats are all about probabilities and obligations. This change in terms created a windfall for financing companies but a much higher risk for operators. Leases were promoted over ownership to take advantage of these small but critical terms. Once the losses were covered, however, the windfall benefits to profit became as standard as the market could handle. Several years ago I had a client (husband and wife team) who wanted to own their own. They found a truck and started negotiating. Even though they put $30,000 down on the truck the dealership told them they did not qualify for owning, so they had to lease. Their payments were $3400 per month for
48 months with a small buyout figure at the end. They signed the lease and started driving. Unfortunately, someone hit their truck and totaled it six months into the lease. The insurance provider negotiated with the owner (financing company) and came up with a settlement figure (without input from my client). The insurance provider paid the value to the Leasing company, who then called my client for the balance… $12,000 (negotiated down to $10,000). So let’s do the math: $30,000 + (6 X $3400) + $10,000 = $60,400… or $10,066 per month rent! The reason they lost so much money was because the lease forced them to pay the “interest” for the entire 48 months (not just 6 months as a bank/lender would). This added on an additional $22,000. Since the client was not listed as the owner the insurance provider had no obligation to negotiate with them. My client was helpless. This loss of control may sometimes be eliminated providing the carrier forces the insurance provider to ne-
Page T-3
gotiate with the operator (certainly not a universal position in the industry, since many Carriers selfinsure). The client had 20% down and they had large payments. There was no reason they could not own. It was pushed on them using the argument that there was no difference between owning and leasing, and/or it was better for taxes. In my opinion, this was a lie. This example exposed a problem in the industry that leasing company executives needed to solve. Operators were carrying super high risk. In response, leasing companies can request or even demand top up insurance. In effect “top up” is an in-
surance policy paid by the operator yet payable to the leasing company in the event something happens while the entire contract is “under water”, “upside down” or in “negative equity”. If you’ve been asked to buy top up insurance for your lease, you better know you started your business venture upside down and the homeless guy on the street will be worth more than your business is for a few more years yet. Why would anyone get into a business that starts off at negative and has such a significant possibility for failure? It’s usually because operators are making choices based on Continued on page T-5

Mack Trucks recently launched Mack Fleet Management Services, its suite of software and technology offerings that, initially through Telogis, enhance operational performance for customers, reduce costs and increase safety. Built on the Mack GuardDog Connect telematics solution platform, Mack Fleet Management Services is available on Mack Pinnacle, Granite and Titan by Mack models. Factory-installed hardware provides detailed vehicle information, including fleet and compliance management data, and eliminates the need for aftermarket hardware purchases and installation costs. Mack’s first collaboration is with Telogis, a leading provider of cloud-based intelligence software. Mack will offer three packages – Telogis Compliance and Navigation, Telogis Fleet and a bundled package of the two. Mack Fleet Management Services will also offer the flexibility to work with multiple partners. “Mack Fleet Management Services offer customers tools to effectively and efficiently manage their operations, improving their total cost of ownership,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “Integrating technology and services facilitates customer choice and offers them the best return on investment. We are pleased to be working with Telogis out of the gate in providing these types of services.” Telogis utilizes proprietary Mack data, including driver and vehicle performance history, for the initial Mack Fleet Management Services offer. Telogis Compliance and Navigation enable drivers to better manage and meet hours-of-service requirements and complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports. Telogis Navigation also delivers dynamically updated road conditions collected from an existing community of more than 140,000 commercial drivers in North America, enabling Mack customers to avoid potential delays and helping to increase on-time deliveries.
Telogis Fleet is a comprehensive, scalable fleet management solution that can be activated over the air. Combined with Mack proprietary data, it provides real-time visibility into vehicle and driver performance. With Telogis Fleet, customers can view critical information for all the trucks in their fleets on one dashboard to help run their fleets safely and efficiently. “Leveraging the Mack GuardDog Connect telematics solution platform, Mack customers now have the easiest path to comprehensive fleet management, easy-to-use compliance apps and truck-specific navigation from Telogis,” said Susan Heystee, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Sales at Telogis. “Mack customers will experience near-immediate ROI by maximizing uptime and lowering the total cost of ownership.” The hardware, which is standard on Mack Pinnacle, Mack Granite and Titan by Mack models, is also central to the Mack GuardDog Connect telematics solution. GuardDog Connect enables real-time diagnosis
of issues, proactive communication of decisioncritical information for the fleet manager, scheduling for repairs and confirmation that needed parts are in stock and ready to install, all while the truck is still on the job. Once GuardDog Connect is engaged, an automatic alert is sent to Mack OneCall, Mack’s 24/7 customer support center staffed by trained support specialists. Upon receiving the notification and while the driver continues working, the Mack OneCall team immediately evaluates the situation. A case is opened in the Mack ASIST web-based fleet service management platform, the owner or fleet maintenance manager is contacted and the repair planning process begins through a customerchosen dealer. This process includes verification that a bay and the necessary parts are available while Mack OneCall electronically sends repair instructions to the dealer. Every step of the process happens within minutes of the initial GuardDog Connect headsup and is constantly managed by Mack OneCall. The end result is that technicians are fully prepared when the truck arrives, getting the customer back on the road faster. b

14% Of Trucks Will Be Alt Fuel by 2035; Autonomous Vehicles A Reality Worldwide sales of alternative fuel vehicles will reach 14 percent of total sales of medium and heavy duty vehicles by 2035, while the number of global sales of vehicles with autonomous capability will grow from zero currently to 94.7 million, according to a new report from Navigant Research. Medium and heavy duty vehicles (MHDVs) running on alternative fuel represent less than 5 percent of the total vehicle market today, and the vast majority of these use conventional internal combustion engines (ICE) powered by either gasoline or diesel. Navigant says that is changing as less expensive alternatives to petroleumbased fuels, such as natu-
ral gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG – also known as propane or autogas), and electricity make inroads in the market. “Attractive business cases for medium and heavy duty alternative fuel vehicles are emerging across varying segments of the market,” says Scott Shepard, research analyst with Navigant Research. “Natural gas has a significant advantage over most alternative fuels, in that low fuel costs and advances in infrastructure for both liquefied natural gas and fast-fill compressed natural gas make the fuel competitive in all market segments, including heavy duty long-haul trucking.” While diesel will remain the primary fuel choice of

Meanwhile, although significant challenges remain for bringing autonomous, or self-driving, vehicles to market, the competition among vehicle makers to offer autonomous features in cars and trucks is strong, says a related Navigant report. “Combinations of advanced driver assistance features that can enable semi-autonomous driving are now being brought to market for the first time,” says David Alexander, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “The cost reductions brought about by increasing volumes and technological advances make the installation of the multiple sensors necessary for such capability feasible.” b

Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company, the industry’s largest manufacturer of refrigerated trailers and a leading manufacturer of dry freight vans, flatbeds, and Tautliner curtainsided trailers is pleased to announce that its Clearfield, Utah manufacturing plant has received the Liberty Mutual Insurance Silver Safety Award. The Safety Awards are based on DART rates (Days Away, Restricted and Transferred), which are calculated by factoring the number of hours worked relative to the number of accidents at the plant. Low occurrences of accidents result in lower DART rates. In order to qualify for the Safety Award, a DART rate
of at least 60% better than the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) is needed with a minimum of 200,000 work-hours. The Clearfield manufacturing plant achieved a DART rate of 1.62, which is 29% of the 2012 trailer manufacturing industry average of 5.5. “Being recognized by Liberty Mutual is a big deal. But not as big a deal as sending employees home to see their families and loved ones after every shift. Without the support of both Utility’s owners and employees, we could not have achieved this award,” said Dennis Wilson, Utility’s Clearfield Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager. “This is the second Sil-
Allison Transmission Showcases Its Largest Product Range Ever Allison Transmission showcased its largest range of transmissions ever in Europe at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Exposition, Sept. 25 to Oct. 2 in Hannover. Products ranged from 1000/2000 Series models for light-duty commercial vehicles to 3000 Series and 4000 Series for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, and the 6000 Series off-highway unit. Other displays on view at the two-floor Allison exhibition were be the cross-drive steering transmissions for tracked military vehicles, the highlyefficient TC10TM for road tractors and the Torqmatic Series transmission specially designed for city and intercity bus and coach applications. Both H 40/50 EP and H 3000 parallel hybrid systems were also featured. Allison develops products that offer a significant competitive advantage together with high efficiency and environmental benefits. Optimized conventional propulsion units, complementing technology with natural gas and advanced hybrid systems – Allison helps vehicles achieve superior efficiency and performance.
FuelSense – The savings are automatic Allison Transmission recently introduced FuelSense, a new fuel-efficiency package that can deliver even higher fuel savings for fleets – up to 20 percent depending on application and configuration. In combination with 5th Generation Electronic Controls, FuelSense features automatically adapt shift schedules and torque, maximizing transmission efficiency based on load, grade and duty cycle. Also suitable for vehicles with natural gas engines, IAA visitors can calculate potential yearly cost savings in the FuelSense training area. Hybrids – For the sake of the environment The H 40/50 EP and H 3000 parallel hybrid systems also offer savings potential. Currently, around 5,000 city buses equipped with Allison H 40/50 EP drive units are operating in over 230 cities worldwide. The H 3000 for mediumand heavy-duty trucks is based on the Allison 3000 Series and was designed to offer reductions in fuel consumption of up to 25 percent depending on application and duty cycle.
ver Award in a row for our Clearfield plant, and our 8th Liberty Safety Award since 2001. We are proud of the effort and dedication of our employees and management team for their continued commitment to keep themselves and their fellow employees safe,” said Bob Griffis, Corporate EHS Manager for Utility Trailer Manufacturing. The Liberty Mutual Silver Safety Award was presented to Steve Smith (Utility’s now-retired Plant Manager and employee for 42 ½ years) and the entire management team, on behalf of all Clearfield employees. In presenting the award for Liberty Mutual Insurance, Robert K. Gardner (ARM), Risk Control Services, stated, “You and your associates should be very proud of this achievement that only a small percentage of companies qualify for.” b Natural Gas Engines – Also in the Euro 6 Econic NGT Allison Automatics are perfectly suited to natural gas engines in a wide range of applications. Patented torque converter technology enhances response-time-to-throttle cycles of natural gas engines, multiplying engine torque at vehicle launch and smoothly transferring power to the drive wheels. As a result, whether using renewable bio natural gas or natural gas derived from fossil fuels, Allison transmissions deliver superior vehicle performance, while increasing fuel efficiency. Stop-Start Technology – For ultra-low carbon powertrains In July, Allison Transmission presented a new integrated stop-start technology in conjunction with Project “ETHOS.” In partnership with the California Energy Commission, Cummins developed an engine that uses E85 (a high-octane blend of ethanol and gasoline) as a fuel to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Cummins ETHOS 2.8L engine is coupled with an Allison 2550 fully automatic transmission – for smooth and efficient stop-start operation. Until now the ETHOS 2.8L has proven capable of exceeding the 50 percent CO2 emission reductions outlined as a project goal. b

Bendix Unveils Upgraded Brake Shoe Remanufacturing Facility Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC has expanded its remanufacturing capabilities and capacity with a $3.2 million capital investment in equipment and facility upgrades at its Huntington, Indiana, plant. The Bendix Brake Shoe Remanufacturing Center now handles the complete salvage, coining, and assembly processes that make up start-to-finish remanufacturing and can produce several million remanufactured commercial vehicle brake shoes annually. Bendix, the North American leader in the development and manufacture of leading-edge active safety and braking system technologies, began serial production of reman shoes at the facility in the fall of 2012. Combining Bendix’s nearly 40 years’ experience in remanufacturing with Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake’s acknowledged leadership in wheel-end
solutions and brake shoe manufacturing, the center has assembled more than 1.9 million brake shoes since its opening in 2012. Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC (BSFB) is a joint venture between Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Products, LLC. “As the commercial vehicle industry continues to adapt to ever-changing regulations and compliance standards, fleets and owner-operators are turning in greater numbers to high-quality remanufactured brake shoes as a solution in their parts strategy,” said Henry Foxx, Bendix Director of remanufactured products. “The Bendix Brake Shoe Remanufacturing Center grew from our desire to provide reman brake shoes offering the durability, reliability, performance, and extended lining life expected of original equipment. With
the completion of the next phase of production expansion, in tandem with our three-tiered portfolio of reman brake shoe offerings, Bendix is better equipped than ever to meet every customer’s need for safety, performance, and value.” Bendix’s Brake Shoe Remanufacturing Center employs 65 people, part of Huntington’s total roster of 430 employees. The center’s 74,000 square feet bring the Huntington operation’s total to 547,000 square feet, comprising four manufacturing and assembly facilities as well as Bendix’s primary North American distribution center. Key to the upgrades to the Brake Shoe Remanufacturing Center is the coining process, which returns used brake shoes to the shape engineered by their original equipment (OE) manufacturers. Bendix has always coined 100 percent of its

remanufactured brake shoes, and the upgrade increases coining capacity and capability. “A brake shoe undergoes a tremendous amount of force and drastic temperature changes during its life cycle,” said Frank Gilboy, BSFB brake shoe product line manager. “Over time, this results in deformation. It’s twisted, or it’s stretched, and if you just reline that shoe with new friction – like most brake shoe reliners do – you’re going to have issues when it engages with the drum, because it no longer has the correct geometry to provide full contact and stopping power.” The new Bendix 1,000ton coining press reproduces the original manufacturing methods, applying the full tonnage necessary to return the shoe to its proper shape and OE specifications. All of those specifications are crucial to maintaining brake safety and performance in the era of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Reduced Stopping Distance (RSD) mandate and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administra-
tion’s (FMCSA) Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program. “We understand how critical it is for all the welds to be correct, for the thickness of the steel to be correct, and for all the other factors that go into brake shoe engineering to be considered,” Gilboy said. “Our inspection uses all of our OE design experience and criteria to make sure that the shoes we inspect and put into remanufacturing production are suitable to go back out there for another lifetime in the field.” Other improvements to the Brake Shoe Remanufacturing Center include a self-contained salvage and de-lining area, which prevents dust and other contaminants from reaching the painting and riveting process; four automated de-liners that remove the friction with greater accuracy and reduce the chance of accidental shoe damage; and two new 24-cubic-foot blasters that clean the shoes in order to provide the best adhesion surface for the new lining. Additionally, a new 2,000-square-foot paint line can handle up to 500 parts per hour. When Bendix reman
shoes undergo final assembly, the production line uses the same riveting procedure used by OE manufacturers. This ensures correct lining attachment for maximum lining service. The improvements were also designed to meet Bendix’s rigorous standards for safe and environmentally sustainable workplaces. Employee ergonomic and safety considerations played significant roles in developing the production line, which also incorporates extensive wastewater treatment and waste diversion methods. The always expanding remanufactured Bendix brake shoe product portfolio is supported with in-house research and development – along with ongoing comprehensive friction testing – conducted at the company’s engineering center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, as well as a state-of-the-art order fulfillment operation to ensure that customers receive fast and easy access to inventory. ‘Efficiency in Motion’ Tour Demonstrates Value Of Kenworth T680 Advantage To Fleets And Operators Fleets and truck operators received the fuel efficiency and cost-saving message loud and clear as the Kenworth T680 Advantage ‘Efficiency in Motion’ Tour visited numerous Kenworth dealerhosted events throughout the United States and Canada. The Kenworth T680 Advantage, Kenworth’s most fuel-efficient truck, features the optimized powertrain combination of the 2014 PACCAR
MX-13 engine and Eaton Fuller Advantage automated transmission, Dana’s Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem drive axles, and the new, factory-installed Kenworth aerodynamic package. As a result, the T680 Advantage with 76inch sleeper offers up to a 5 percent fuel economy improvement compared to last year’s T680 76-inch sleeper with 2013 PACCAR MX-13 engine, Eaton UltraShift PLUS LAS 10-speed transmission,
and Dana DSP40 6x4. CIT Kenworth Chicago - Mokena, Kenworth of Indianapolis, and Inland Kenworth - Phoenix were among recent stops on the tour, which began in June and concluded Oct. 1 at Kenworth Northwest - Yakima in Washington state. The Kenworth T680 Advantage ‘Efficiency in Motion’ Tour certainly demonstrated to customers that the T680 Advantage can significantly reduce their
fuel costs while remaining a driver’s first choice, according to Scott Nichols, principal operating manager for Kenworth of Indianapolis. “Sometimes fleet and truck operators can find it difficult to discover a truck that significantly lowers their operating costs while at the same time offers drivers a great driving experience,” Nichols said. “Kenworth has successfully met that challenge in the past by offering trucks with industry-leading aerodynamics and comfort. The tour demonstrated to our customers that the Kenworth T680 Advantage is something better, a whole lot better. The overall feedback we heard from both
November 2014 fleet owners and drivers was amazing. “When fleets begin to realize the fuel savings with the T680 Advantage package, they get excited and really start to engage, asking all sorts of questions about the different fuel-saving components,” said Nichols. “When drivers see all the comfort the T680 has to offer and the features that make it an easier truck to drive, they love it and want it as their truck,” Nichols said. From their comments, it’s apparent that both fleet owners and drivers see the Kenworth T680 as the allin-one truck model for both of them, Nichols added. Don Blake, Sales Manager for Inland Kenworth - Phoenix, agreed. He said the tour’s recent stop there attracted a variety of customers from owner-operators to small fleets with up to five trucks as well as large fleets of 50 or more trucks. Even the CEO of one of the largest trucking companies in North America showed up wearing a Kenworth baseball cap, he added. They all found that the Kenworth T680 Advantage offers compelling features that make it a highly productive and driver-friendly truck, Blake said. “Our customers were very interested in all of the fuel-saving components and aerodynamic features of the T680 Advantage,” Blake added. “They were loving the idea that a truck could be both fuel-efficient and attract drivers.” The fuel-saving compo-
nents of the T680 Advantage also greatly appealed to CIT Kenworth Chicago customers during the tour’s stop in Mokena, Ill. “Improving fuel economy is a leading factor in the decision-making process for truck owners, fleet managers, and business owners,” said Rodney Shaffer, Chicago area regional manager for CIT Kenworth. “The tour provided an excellent educational opportunity for our customers regardless of size to learn how the T680 Advantage can help them gain much-needed improvements in fuel economy.” Shaffer said the tour’s 53-foot trailer featuring a self-guided exhibit with interactive displays offered customers a lot of good information to help them understand the benefits of the T680 Advantage. In the end, it was customers’ personal experience with the Kenworth T680, particularly those equipped with the PACCAR MX-13 engine, that ultimately convinced them of the value of the T680 Advantage. “With customers reporting noticeable fuel economy gains and overall reductions in operating costs compared to the performance of their 15-liter engines, the PACCAR MX-13 engine is gaining significant traction in our market by reputation,” Shaffer said. “Our sales staff had visiting customers who were ready to finalize the paperwork on the purchase of the T680 with the PACCAR MX-13 engine.” b

Bendix Announces Next Generation Of Commercial Vehicle Active Safety Systems Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC will launch the next generation of its leading-edge active safety technologies in 2015, introducing stationary vehicle braking and other functions currently not available in North America. The next generation technology significantly enhances the performance of its existing systems through stronger, deeper integration and upgraded components. It also delivers alert prioritization and a significant reduction of false alerts that sometimes can be apparent in single-sensor systems. Bendix, the North American leader in the development and manufacture of commercial vehicle active safety and braking solutions, has received overwhelmingly positive feedback after demonstrating the system for numerous fleets and is currently road-testing the system with major commercial vehicle manufacturers.
“For decades, Bendix has expanded the frontiers of vehicle safety like no other company, from pioneering antilock brakes to developing the first widely available full-stability solution for the North American commercial vehicle market to launching active cruise control with braking and collision mitigation technology,” said Scott Burkhart, Bendix Vice President Sales, Marketing & Business Development. “Now, we’ve improved and fused together the most advanced technologies in the Bendix commercial vehicle safety suite to create a system that does more – and does it better – for today’s commercial vehicle market. Fleets can be confident in the system, because at its core are tried and true technologies that have performed reliably over many years and millions of miles.” The next-generation system builds on the prov-
en technology of Bendix ESP Electronic Stability Program full-stability system, Bendix Wingman Advanced – A Collision Mitigation Technology, and AutoVue Lane Departure Warning (LDW) System from Bendix CVS. Bendix ESP addresses both roll and directional stability through sensors that recognize and mitigate conditions that could lead to rollover and loss-of-control. Wingman Advanced uses a radar sensor mounted to the front of a vehicle to provide active cruise control with braking features, along with collision mitigation technology that delivers both warnings and active interventions to help drivers potentially avoid rear-end collisions or at least help reduce their severity. AutoVue links a camera with a wide field of view to an on-board ECU that uses image recognition software to track visible lane markings and detects when the vehicle begins to
drift toward an unintended lane change. Burkhart noted that along with the additional features and technology integration, the next-generation active safety system will also offer fleets real “one-stop shopping” convenience with an allinclusive, better-performing safety option provided and supported by a single manufacturer. In a first for the North American commercial vehicle industry, Bendix’s next generation of active safety upgrades and fuses three component technologies – camera, radar, and brakes – with groundbreaking results. “When these systems are fully integrated – ‘talking’ directly to each other, in a sense, with multiple sensors confirming situational data – you get far more robust decision making in the system as a whole,” said TJ Thomas, Bendix Director of Marketing and Customer Solutions, Controls group. “That means more effective alert prioritization and a substantial reduction of false alerts. And this sensor data fusion is also crucial to unlocking new safety
Page T-11 capabilities like stationary vehicle braking.” Stationary vehicle braking is a technological step forward from the stationary object alerts of Wingman Advanced. Currently, the stationary object alert function gives the driver a warning only, of up to 3.0 seconds, when a large metallic in-lane object is blocking the lane of travel. The stationary vehicle braking function – part of the innovative next-generation Bendix technology – not only delivers the warning, with more alert time available, but also can apply the brakes if the system recognizes the metallic object as a vehicle. To make this possible, Bendix has adapted technology powered by the Mobileye System-on-Chip
EyeQ2 processor with advanced object detection algorithms. “Today’s announcement merely scratches the surface of what our nextgeneration safety system can do. Other improvements and new capabilities of Bendix’s next-generation active safety system will be announced as next year’s launch date nears,” Thomas said. “The exceptional menu of enhanced and new features helps elevate safety to a new level.” The new system will also integrate with SafetyDirect from Bendix CVS, a user-friendly Web portal that provides fleet operators with videos of severe events, along with comprehensive feedback on their fleet and drivers. Needing a reliable truck tough enough to easily handle mooring the Goodyear Blimp, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company chose a modified Mack Granite model as a mast truck for its iconic cargo.
Goodyear Chooses Mack Granite To Moor Blimp It takes a tough truck to control a massive airship while it’s not in flight. So when The Goodyear Tire & Rub-
ber Company needed a highly reliable, highly customized truck to handle mooring the latest generation of the
world-famous Goodyear blimp, the company chose a Mack Granite model. The Mack Granite
model used to haul the blimp is the only one of its kind, built specifically for Goodyear when the company determined it needed a truck-mounted mooring system, known as a mast truck, rather than the previous system of mooring its older, smaller blimps to the ground. Newer, larger blimps require the more efficient truck-mounted option. The Granite model’s strong frame is designed to easily manage harsh work conditions and offers the muscle and finesse needed to haul mammoth loads as treasured as the Goodyear blimp. “Mack prides itself on being easy to do business with, and our sales force is known for working in tandem with the customer to develop the needed specification for any application,” said Stu Russoli, Mack Vocational Segment Product Manager. “The Mack Granite offers an incredibly durable base for essentially any vocational application and Continued from page T-11
tem wirelessly transmits real-time driver performance data and event-based information – including videos – to the fleet’s back office for analysis by fleet safety personnel. “Safe drivers practicing safe driving habits, supported by comprehensive driver training, have always been the first line of defense in preventing accidents,” said Burkhart. “More than ever, SafetyDirect helps recognize and reinforce drivers’ best
November 2014 allows for modifications to ensure application excellence.” Mike Bloom of Nuss Truck & Equipment, based in Rochester, Minnesota, met with Goodyear representatives at Goodyear’s headquarters in Akron, Ohio, where they discussed design options and their needs. The truck needed to move the blimp in and out of hangars, as well as offer ground support when the blimp is not in the air, all while standing up to wind loads of as much as 78 knots (78 knots = 90 mph). Goodyear chose a 2014 Mack Granite model equipped with a Mack MP8 engine, Mack 200 series carriers with inter-axle locking differentials and four Goodyear G278 MSD tires in size 425/65R22.5 on the front paired with eight
G572 LHD tires in size 11R24.5 to get the job done. The truck was built at the Macungie Cab & Vehicle Assembly facility, where all Mack models for North America and export are built. The Granite was ordered as a three-axle model but was modified by Engineered Chassis Systems, a subsidiary of the Nuss Group, which built the body, converted it to an all-wheel drive 8x8 and installed the twin steer axles. The Mack Vehicle Option Center installed the TIREBOSS Tire Pressure Control System on the drive axles. “The innovation associated with the new mast truck allows us the capability to efficiently operate the airship,” said Brad Crombie, global engineer for Goodyear. b
Weigh2GoBC Welcomes Carriers Based In Alberta Weigh2GoBC is a network of weigh-in-motion and automatic vehicle identification equipment that allows commercial vehicles to report to BC’s inspections stations electronically. There are no fees associated with this self-serve program. Weigh2GoBC has a small number of transponders available at no cost on a first come, first served basis and based on fleet size. Vehicles that are enrolled in the program register a transponder that sits on the dash of the truck and uses radio frequency to communicate. As the vehicle approaches a W2G equipped station,
the credentials are checked and the driver is signalled a green light that allows them to bypass that station or a red light which means that they have to report. Participating stations are at Hope, Kamloops, Golden, Prince George, Quesnel, Vanderhoof, Pacific, Nordel and Parksville. The benefits to the carrier are in saving time and fuel by not having to stop at every station as well as reducing the amount of GHGs being emitted into the environment by trucks not having to idle through the stations. practices, enabling fleets to strategically enhance and improve their training programs to maximize highway safety.” The next-generation driver assistance system joins Bendix’s ever-growing portfolio of technology that delivers on safety, vehicle performance and efficiency, and lower ownership costs, along with robust post-sales support. “Fleets are very excited about this technology, and Bendix is proud to work with them to improve high-
way safety,” Thomas said. “We know that no matter how advanced a system is, it won’t replace the need for safe, alert drivers practicing safe driving habits, or diminish the importance of comprehensive driver training. As long as there are trucks on the road, we’ll equip fleets and drivers with the best tools we can to help them reach their destinations safely.” For more information about Bendix safety systems visit www.bendix. com. b

Most recently, Daimler showcased the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025, which was equipped with an advanced vehicle communication system featuring radar, sensor and camera technologies that enhance driver per-
formance and safety. “Daimler has long served as the leader in offering options that make the roads safer for drivers and passengers,” said Richard Howard, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Daimler Trucks North America. “Detroit Assurance serves to emphasize our ongoing commitment to innovation and safety.” Available for the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution and Cascadia equipped with Detroit engines, the Detroit Assurance safety suite includes driverfriendly controls, and is seamlessly integrated into the truck’s dashboard, engine and transmission electronics, resulting in smoother and more accurate transitions. Detroit Assurance track the truck’s position in comparison to other traffic and obstacles
to warn the driver or, if necessary, slow the truck down automatically. Detroit Assurance includes: • A base bumpermounted radar system that features collision mitigation as well as adaptive cruise control. It uses active braking assist that is always on and applies the brakes to mitigate collisions, while adaptive cruise maintains a safe following distance. • An optional camera system with lane departure warning. It uses audio and visual indicators to notify a driver they have unintentionally departed their lane. “Detroit Assurance not only benefits driver performance, but also directly impacts the vehicle’s overall operation through automatic transitions,” said Howard. “We’re proud to continue Daimler’s long tradition of being the leading provider of safety options that protect drivers and improve safety.” b

sponsorship, Mack will provide a 2014 Mack Pinnacle sleeper model. “Our customers depend on Mack Trucks to get the job done safely,” said Stephen Roy, President of Mack Trucks North American Sales and Marketing. “That safety focus must also include the millions of motorists who drive alongside our trucks every day. Through the Share the Road program, we can do our part to help increase highway safety by educating as many motorists as possible about safe driving behaviors.” The Share the Road program sends professional truck drivers with exemplary safety records across the country to conduct driving demonstrations for students, motorists and other groups. The program’s drivers, many with millionmile accident-free driving records, cover topics from truck stopping distances to potential blind spots in an effort educate the public on
how best to share the road with large trucks. “We are thrilled to have Mack Trucks as a sponsor of our Share the Road program since 2001,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “Share the Road is recognized nationwide as a model education program. With the generous donation of this new Mack Pinnacle model, we will be able to reach millions of people with our message of highway safety.” The 70-inch high-rise Mack Pinnacle Axle Back sleeper Mack is providing features a Mack MP8 505C engine with 505 horsepower and 1,760 lb.-ft. of torque. The Pinnacle model is equipped with the Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission, allowing drivers to focus completely on the road ahead rather than shifting gears. In addition to Mack Roll Stability Advantage by Bendix, the Pinnacle model is equipped with Bendix Wingman Advanced adaptive cruise control. This safety-enhancing system helps drivers avoid potential collisions by integrating throttle, engine brake and foundation brakes into the cruise control function. b

Peterbilt Technician Institute Expands To Chicagoland After graduating its first class of students earlier this year, the Peterbilt Technician Institute (PTI) has expanded to a second location in Lisle, Ill., with classes beginning this week. Peterbilt Motors Company teamed with Universal Technical Institute (UTI) to create the comprehensive technician training program last year at UTI’s Dallas campus. Applications for enrollment are currently being accepted for PTI at both campuses. “Due to the success of our inaugural Peterbilt Technician Institute, we’re very pleased to grow the program in the key Chicago market and we plan to continue expansion to other locations nationwide,” said Robert Woodall, Peterbilt Director of Sales and Marketing. “PTI provides our
dealer network with a great resource for staffing their service areas with qualified, highly trained technicians that will ultimately result in greater shop productivity and profitability, while helping ensure the highest possible levels of customer satisfaction.” PTI is a 12-week program conducted in conjunction with UTI that features exclusive classroom and hands-on instruction of total vehicle diagnostics, maintenance and repairs. It also covers essential workplace topics such as customer service, dealership shop operations and laws and regulations. Students graduate with a bumper-tobumper knowledge of commercial vehicles, including a focus on the complete lineup of Peterbilt trucks
New Anti-Theft System For Peterbilt Models 579, 567 Peterbilt now offers a new anti-theft system for its Models 579 and 567 equipped with PACCAR MX-13 Engines, providing customers with an extra layer of security. “The anti-theft system integrates with the MX-13
Engine and the vehicle’s Driver Information Centre to require operators to enter a unique passcode to start the truck,” says Peterbilt Chief Engineer Landon Sproull. “If an incorrect code is entered, the engine will be
Kenworth T680 And T880 Now With Bendix SmarTire System The Kenworth T680 and Kenworth T880 are now available with the fuelsaving SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) by Bendix CVS as an option when specifying these models. With the Bendix Tire Pressure Management System, Kenworth offers a special display for the T680 and T880 on the Kenworth Driver Performance Center 5-inch in-dash screen. The display operates when the truck is parked and features PSI and temperature for each tire. The system also supports super singles and trailer tires. The factory-installed Bendix system uses wheel-mounted sen-
sors in each tire to monitor the tire’s pressure and temperature. Sensors are located on the steer and drive axle wheels. If tire pressure becomes too low, or tire temperature becomes too high, the system sends a signal to the driver via the dash display. Operating at recommended tire pressure is important for optimal tire life and fuel economy. Kenworth T680 “Fleets and truck operators are becoming more proactive in addressing tire inflation as they strive to maximize each truck’s fuel efficiency,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth Marketing Director. “Now, with the Bendix sys-
and PACCAR Engines. Students are sponsored by Peterbilt dealerships which then offer graduates employment upon completion of the program. The program is part of UTI’s Manufacturer Specific Advanced Training (MSAT) and classes are taught by a dedicated UTI instructor with support from Peterbilt. “PTI and other training offered through Universal Technical Institute are among the most comprehensive of its kind and prepares students with the education and hands-on experience that provide a solid foundation for a successful career,” said Kim McWaters, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at UTI. “Our dynamic learning environment, highly effective instructors and proven curriculum are helping the commercial vehicle industry and others overcome the shortage of qualified, skilled technicians.” b disabled until the correct code is used.” As added security, Sproull said, the engine must be started within six minutes of entering the code, or the code will need to be entered again. Passwords can be changed and the system can be activated or deactivated through any Peterbilt dealership’s service department. The anti-theft system is now in production and available for order. b tem for the T680 and T880, they can take advantage of an easier, very efficient and time-saving way to regularly monitor tire pressure and temperature and gain enhanced tire life. The result can be less downtime and more money in their pocket.” Kenworth T880 According to Bendix, a tire that is under-inflated by as little as 10 percent can result in a 1.5 percent drop in fuel economy, which may increase fuel spending by up to $1,000 per year for a single truck. Under-inflation by 20 percent results in a 30 percent reduction in tire life. A tire failure on the road due to improper tire inflation can also rack up large roadside assistance charges, depending on when and where they occur. For more information call or visit a local Kenworth dealer, or visit www.bendix.com. b

Peterbilt Offers Dana Spicer Advantek 40 Tandem Axle
Powerfully Efficient: Mack Unveils Mack MP7 405SE
Roundtables To Examine Truck Driving, Training Standards
Delivering improved fuel economy, reduced maintenance and lower weight, the Dana Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem drive axle is now available for all Peterbilt heavy-duty truck models, Peterbilt Motors Company recently announced. The efficient axle design with AdvanTEK gearing and optimized integration with Peterbilt’s chassis can improve fuel efficiency by up to two percent, or approximately $1,500 in fuel costs annually. “This new axle provides customers with numerous bottom-line benefits, particularly in linehaul applications, including higher fuel economy, lower maintenance and increased payloads,” said Robert Woodall, Peterbilt Director of Sales and Marketing. “With the AdvanTEK 40 customers can spec the fastest axle ratios in the industry to handle higher torque input while reducing engine speeds by 200 rpm for better fuel efficiency.” Customers can realize additional savings through
Mack Trucks unveiled its newest integrated powertrain offering, the Mack MP7 405 Super Econodyne (SE). Available with 405 horsepower and 1,560 lb.-ft. of torque, the MP7 405SE boosts fuel efficiency while delivering all the power required to get the job done. The Super Econodyne system is designed with all-Mack proprietary components for a complete Mack Pedigree Powertrain. The MP7 engine, Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission (AMT), Mack proprietary drive axles and Mack’s custom software work seamlessly as an integrated package providing industry-leading fuel efficiency without compromising power or performance. “The MP7 is the latest Mack engine to be available in the Super Econodyne rating,” said Roy Horton, Mack director of product marketing. “Customers who spec the fuelefficient MP7 SE package with the overdrive AMT
Trucking industry representatives from across Canada will soon take part in a series of regional roundtables that will help to clearly define the knowledge, skills, and abilities that truck drivers are expected to demonstrate on the job. The initiative is the latest phase of Trucking HR Canada’s Driving the Future project, which is supported by the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and every provincial trucking association. Trucking HR Canada says the roundtables will produce detailed information to help guide driving schools when developing training programs, ensure that graduating drivers are more employable, and better meet the trucking industry’s needs. The work also represents an important step toward mandatory entry-level driver training, and efforts to recognize truck driving as a skilled occupation. “Each provincial asso-
lower service requirements and reduced downtime. For instance, it features the industry’s first non-maintenance u-tube breather that extends lubricant life. And less lubricant is required with an on-demand lubrication system that only pumps when necessary, reducing the needed amount by up to five pints. Durability and reliability are enhanced through the AdvanTEK 40 design. Optimum inter-axle driveline angles minimize noise vibration harshness to increase ujoint life and reduce wear on other components. The axles also feature differential locking to provide maximum traction when needed. The AdvanTEK 40 is available on Peterbilt Models 587, 579, 567, 389, 384, 382, 367, 365, 348 and 320. It is ideally suited for direct-drive transmission drivetrains requiring ratios from 2.26 to 2.79. It is compatible with the SPL350-XL (required with and limited to 2.26 and 2.39 axle ratios) and SPL250XL drivelines. b
and Mack’s C125/126 axles can experience up to a 4 percent fuel efficiency improvement compared with the standard MP7 and AMT package.” The lightweight MP7 offers an outstanding power-to-weight ratio, ideal for maximizing payloads. Available in Mack Pinnacle™ models, the Greenhouse Gas 2014-certified MP7 405SE is ideal for regional and bulk haul applications up to 80,000 pounds on predominantly flat terrain and up to 70,000 pounds on rolling hills. “The MP7 405SE delivers the legendary Mack power and performance our customers have come to expect from an integrated Mack Pedigree Powertrain, but with even greater fuel efficiency,” Horton said. “It allows our customers to maximize payloads, save on fuel and increase their return on investment – all without compromising power.” The Mack MP7 405SE is available now for order. b
ciation will invite a broad cross-section of industry members to participate in the roundtables,” says Angela Splinter, CEO of Trucking HR Canada. “These moderated sessions will help us tap into their expertise so that we clearly understand what drivers need to know, and ensure that the information reflects regional realities.” Regional roundtables are being scheduled between August and October. The draft standard that emerges will then be circulated throughout the trucking industry for review and comments. The three-year Driving the Future project is supported with $1.2 million in funding from Employment and Social Development Canada. The work is also a direct response to recent recommendations by the CTA’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Truck Driver Shortage in Canada, and a landmark Conference Board of Canada report on the shortage. b
