Making Your Miles Count — with Robert D. Scheper

National Survey On Industry Turnover I

n the Spring of 2012, the Canadian Trucking Alliance’s Blue Ribbon Task Force for the first time placed much more responsibility on turnover to the trucking companies themselves (however softly worded). That’s refreshing news! This national survey is designed to reflect real life experiences of drivers and operators with their past and present employers. Why did you leave

your last employer? Why did you move to your current one? What did you do right? What would you do different? Take a moment to think about all the drivers you know, the new ones and those who have been in the industry for 20 or 30 years. Do you see any difference in attitudes towards their employers? Are their attitudes the same as yours? What about geographical concerns? Do drivers

in the Maritimes feel more respected than those on the prairies (or visa versa)? Have you ever left the industry to find another job? Why did you leave? Was returning to the industry positive or negative? Do you remember 2009, the time when trucking companies were downsizing rather than hiring? Do you think drivers are treated the same TODAY as they were back then?

$50,000 GIVEAWAY

Making Your Miles Count is giving away $50,000 worth of Travel Apps to all Canadian Drivers who participate in our national survey. The first 2,500 drivers or operators who participate will receive a Vital Travel App, an app designed by drivers for drivers who desire to track fuel and maintenance costs for their truck. I was so impressed with the App that I purchased the entire company, and now I want you to have one. The app is the perfect tracker for operator fuel costs, maintenance and travel issues. It’s a standalone product, which means you do not need internet access all the time in order to use it. It works on most hardware and the information is kept private, on your device. If you provide an active e-mail address, national and regional results can be sent to you. DON’T WORRY! We are NOT selling anything! If you hate spam as much as I do you can relax. We are only researching. We have two objectives: increase constructive and comprehensive national dialogue amongst drivers and produce an outline of thought that may stimulate drivers and operators to make better individual choices. Here is the super simple theory: if every driver and operator made better individual choices, the entire industry would change drastically. Good drivers would only work at a good company and poor drivers could only get work at poor companies. Then, poor companies would implode and rates would ultimately increase… for everyone. In any industry with 100% turnover, the problems affect EVERYONE! As an accountant, I consult operators regularly about moving or not moving to another company. Some operators are very impressive business people. Moving from one company to another can make good sense. Sometimes it should be done, sometimes it has to be done… however, sometimes the decision is nothing more than an emotional vent. Many operators who move simply want to make a statement… with their feet. However, too many industry “statements” can easily be interpreted as just useless static. Without clarity companies revert to prejudicial mentalities like “…truckers are never satisfied…” (hardly anything helpful). Communication from drivers to companies

should be made clear, not just loud. The best thing is for companies to have comprehensive exit interviews, but unfortunately far too few practice them. Turnover has become an emotional affair rather than a scientific event. The science (at best) only becomes evident after a few months of separation. If drivers don’t scientifically express their concerns, who will? This survey is designed to be publically available, however individual confidentiality is absolutely assured. Once a large enough sample of drivers/operators participate we will be-

gin to release results. To start the survey, go to www.thrconsulting.ca and click the red “Start National Survey Now”. Enjoy the survey… Enjoy the Travel App. b Robert D Scheper operates an accounting and consulting firm in Steinbach, Manitoba. Driver Profile by Kathryn Thorpe Klassen

T

First Year Blues

hey say the first year of marriage can be the toughest, and the same holds true for your first year behind the wheel of the big rig. Driving a semi for a living can be a tough gig, even for the most experienced professionals. A lot of new drivers can be at a bit of a loss when starting out and may get to the point where they contemplate whether or not they should have pursued a different career path. The lone act of finding an employer willing to take on a newbie and pay a decent wage can be quite a challenge. Throw in the four wheelers and the stunts they pull as they try to get around your rig and it can all leave a new driver extremely stressed. Add in some backing up in crowded parking lots around corners, and it can be more than some new drivers can handle.

Like any job, there’s a learning curve. Stick it out for a year or two and you will find that you have many fantastic opportunities to choose from. All you have to do is keep learning, gaining experience and driving safely. So if you’re a new driver, here are some tips to help you succeed in the industry: Keep the driving safe. You don’t want any accidents or tickets on your record. Keep it all legal, from your weights to your logbook, and don’t let anyone talk you into doing something you aren’t comfortable with. Little things you do can help keep you safe. If you are long haul, make sure to avoid rush hour in any cities you pass through. Plan your schedule and route around it. Don’t take jobs that force you to drive when you’re not fully alert.

Some people thrive working nights, others don’t. Always be on the road when you’re at your best. Once you’ve found a job, stick it out for a while even if it isn’t the opportunity you have always dreamed of. Get to know your customers. They’ll make great references down the road when you’re looking for your next, better, employer. They may know other companies who are hiring and have a different perspective on the companies that they hire to haul their freight than other drivers do. In the same vein, make sure you are talking to other operators in truck stops, at the fuel pumps and on the radio as you’re rolling down the road. Find out who they recommend working for. Ask them if they like their job and how the company treats the employees. It’s a good sign if

they’ve had the same logo on their door for the last decade. Keep your own employer happy with your work whether you love the job or not. They will be the single most important source for a reference you can have when looking for future employment. Whatever you do, don’t burn those bridges. Stop yourself from getting worked up about how the four wheelers are driv-

Page T-5 ing. Do what you need to do to stay out of trouble on the road. No amount of vulgar gestures, near misses or swearing by yourself is going to change how they drive. You certainly won’t be able to. The more composed you are, the better you will handle the stress of driving in heavy traffic. The less stressful you find the job, the more you will be able to enjoy it and the easier you will find your first few

Why Swiftarp? Designed by an operator with 25 years of driving experience, Swiftarp is a space-saving alternative to expensive tarping stations. It’s easy to use inside or outside, in any weather and for shippers it keeps your workers safe when tarping loads by eliminating the need for fall arrest systems when tarping. It frees up valuable space in yards previously occupied by tarping stations and improves efficiency

by reducing wait times for tarping. Drivers can even tarp irregular loads with Swiftarp. The product will help preserve your body for a long and productive career by eliminating heavy lifting, climbing, or falling. Benefits include more log time driving and less/ no tarping and there’s no need to get rigged up in fall arrest equipment to tarp your load. Trucking companies can keep their drivers

months on the road. One thing Western Canada has never lacked is the abundance of poor road conditions for more than half the year. Getting used to running on slick, snow packed roads in frigid temperatures can take some serious getting used to. Running a big rig up and down the highway in poor conditions can be extremely daunting when you are weighing in at tens Continued on page T-6

safely on the ground when strapping/tarping loads which reduces driver injuries, increases productivity, and keeps experienced drivers on the road. The Swiftarp product can be assembled directly onto the forklift and is done in a few minutes. Once assembled the cart is ready to use making it easy for one worker to move Swiftarp to and from the forklift. At the end of the day simply roll Swiftarp into a convenient corner of your yard out of the way. Please visit our website for more information at www.swiftarp.com, and remember “safety comes first with Swiftarp”. b

Someone who you respect, who has made a successful career as a professional driver and who knows the business. Ideally it will be a friend who you can call up at a moments notice for a bit of advice. Don’t assume you know it all just because you took the course. Hopefully they taught you what you need to know to be safe on the road. Learning from those old timers who have been on the road for decades can impart you with more wisdom than you might learn from taking five courses. Keep it professional everywhere you go. Whether you are going through customs and feel that you are being unnecessarily delayed thanks to an overly aggressive agent,

or if you have been waiting in line for two hours to unload at a customer’s yard, always keep a smile on your face and maintain the image of the professional driver. Your professionalism will become a habit. It will be noticed and rewarded down the road whether you think anyone is taking note or not. Make it part of your life, believe it, and live it. Join your local trucking association, gain more credentials and never ever quit learning. Before you know it, you will be through your first couple years. You will have a clean, safe record, great references, and be able to pick and choose the best employer and work conditions for you and your family. b

My Twist with Ray Haight

Was Anybody Listening? A

good friend, Gary Lindsay, President of NAL Insurance, called to ask me if I would represent his company for a series of meetings that were designed to discuss and source solutions to the myriad of conflicting regulations that exist between the USA and Canada. Every sector of the economy was being looked at and I was asked to participate in the Transportation Sector. I was informed that the effort was initiated between President Obama and Prime Minister Harper, and that soon there were to be a series of meetings held in Toronto at the Ivey School of Business. The effort is called the Regulatory Co-Operation Council and its mandate is to identify regulations that exist on both sides of the border that are similar, but just different enough to dictate duplication of forms and bureaucracy that make doing business

with each other complicated and arduous. I was immediately taken aback for no other reason than that this made complete sense and seemed to be long overdue. The fact that government came up with this idea, WOW! At any rate, I agreed to the role I was being asked to perform and was immediately immersed into the process. I was fortunate to be working closely with Dianne Cunningham, who after holding many prestigious roles in government, was at the time, Director of the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management. Dianne is a dynamo of a person and one of the few politicians that I have met who, in her various political positions, actually did it right and got things done. She asked that I bring leaders from the industry that might have a story to tell that could give a real life

accounting of the problems that occur when the border goes hyper bureaucratic due to regulation run amuck. I would like to thank both Wendell Erb and Jeff Bryans for coming to the event and expressing their views. In Wendell’s case, he rolled out a real life situation. It was the case of a load of chicken from South Carolina that didn’t have the correct paperwork from the shipper, causing a two-day delivery to stretch into almost a weeklong event. Erb’s driver sacrificed driving time, the owner of the product had inventory issues and Erb Transport lost the use of a trailer and truck for a week, and to what end? The product was the same product with or without the documents and consequently, all common sense left the equation. In Jeff’s case, he helped immensely during the break out sessions and the informal hallway conversations that usually lead to some of the most productive initiatives during such events. We discussed the USA rules that preclude drivers under 21 years old not being allowed to cross state lines. We also discussed the differences in USA and Canada’s Continued on page T-8

Hours of Service rules, the different processes for safety files; the differences in size and weights; bills of lading and the different rules that apply to speed limiters and other such aggravations that truckers just accept as part of doing business across an international border. It’s the forest for the trees syndrome, isn’t it? We just assume these things can’t be changed and we go about our business as though we are somewhat powerless to effect change. With all due respect to the many trucking associations that look after their member’s best interest, in reality it is still only a small percentage of the total companies in the industry that actually belong to any business group, let alone belonging to a trucking association. I have written on many occasions of the true, untapped political clout the industry could really have on both sides of the border if it ever were to organize the entire industry and speak with a single voice to the issues that could and should be addressed. In my presentation, I took on the cabotage argument. I’m not talk-

October 2013 ing about repositioning empty trailers inside other countries borders; I am talking about the unused capacity that exists in almost every sector of the industry. I began my presentation by suggesting that, over my 10 plus years as a Driver and Owner Operator, there were many occasions when I was forced to return empty to Canada from the southern USA because there were no backhauls to be found going directly into Canada. Even when I was in the Rio Grande valley and load after load was being taken to NORTHERN USA cities, loads that were looking for trucks going into Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland, I couldn’t haul any of them. I was forced into making a decision of heading home empty and living to fight another day, or wait for who knows how long for something into Ontario or Quebec to pop up. This to me was the true elephant in the room. I wondered if there would be a reaction and what that reaction might be if all the trailers going down the

road were transparent and the public could see the true inefficiencies that exist in the trucking industry. Don’t get me wrong. I am talking about inefficiency forced on the industry by numerous intrusive and ridiculous rules. When I ran my trucking company in the truckload sector, we worked very hard to keep our empty miles ratio on our van division at 8% or less and our flats at 20% or less. So I’m just talking about the for hire segment of the industry and I would hazard a guess that the private fleets run 25% to 50% empty miles. What are the top issues we hear about all the time? Driver shortages, carbon emissions, traffic congestion and infrastructure breakdown, the cost of fuel and fuel surcharges — just to name a few! All that or most of it would vanish or be greatly reduced if one rule could be changed. Was anyone really listening? I don’t know as that was over a year ago and I haven’t heard from anyone from the Regulating Co-Operative Council since. b Contact Ray J. Haight at Ray. Haight@truckpost.ca

Roll-Coupling Hitches

The Transportation Association of Canada (TAC – formerly RTAC) developed critical performance measurements for commercial vehicles and limits to provide guidance for crafting regulations and evaluating permit requests from industry. The dynamic performance measure used to evaluate roll stability is “Load Transfer Ratio” (LTR). LTR is a physical measurement of weight transferring from one side of a vehicle to the other while negotiating a corner and when performing a predictable avoidance maneuver around a vehicle or pedestrian etc. when a truck driver doesn’t have

time to stop the truck to avoid a collision. The LTR limit is <0.60. A vehicle experiences LTR = 0.60 or when 60% of the weight that normally is carried on the wheels on one side of the vehicle has transferred to the wheels on the other side resulting in 80% of the weight being carried on the wheels on one side of the vehicle. As variables change, LTR increases until 100% of the weight (LTR = 1.0) has transferred to one side of the vehicle and the vehicle rolls over. Traditional Hitches There are two common groups of hitches used in Canada and around the world. Fifth wheel hitches

provide roll-coupling (after lash in the hitch has been taken up) when one vehicle in a combination is rolling relative to another. As illustrated by TAC below, the lack of roll-coupling between vehicles (top three combinations) using pintle hitches is cited as the cause of roll instability and the reason behind reducing the amount of weight these vehicles can haul in Canada. Stability and Handling Compariso of Vehicles in the Current Truck Fleet The stability and handling characteristics of heavy truck configurations depend upon the actual dimensions of the vehicle, the axle weight and the type of

payload. However, for the purposes of comparison, typical performance levels for seven basic configurations of vehicles commonly used within Canada are depicted in the charts shown.

Roll-Coupling Hardware Roll-coupling hardware is a low-lash coupling that provides the same function as a universal joint – it allows motion around the yaw axis (turning corners)

and pitch axis (driving over bumps) and prevents twisting unless the hitch is equipped with optional selective roll-coupling (onhighway) or roll-relief for use off-highway. b

Hyundai Unveils County Bus Allison Transmission announced that it is supplying fully-automatic transmissions to Hyundai Motor Company’s County bus for the first time. Equipped with an Allison 1000 Series transmission, the new County now offers the added benefits of an automatic including easy driving, improved perfor-

mance and optimized vehicle fuel efficiency. Designed for commercial duty reliability, Allison’s 1000 Series transmissions include a high efficiency torque converter matched to a six-speed planetary gear set with two overdrive ratios. For County bus drivers, these automatics deliver rapid,

smooth acceleration and efficient, continuous power compared to manual transmission equipped buses. Automatic transmissions reduce driver distraction allowing both hands to remain on the steering wheel and both eyes on the road, while avoiding the stress associated with constant gear shifting. Chang-wook (Simon) Kim, Managing Director for Allison Transmission in Korea, said, “Both passengers and drivers generally enjoy a quiet, more comfortable experience” b

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC honours the Grand Champion winner of this year’s American Trucking Associations (ATA) National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC), held Aug. 20 to 24 in Salt Lake City, Utah. For a third straight year, Bendix is the proud sponsor of the Bendix National Truck Driving Championships Grand Champion Award, given to the fiveday competition’s overall top driver. Bendix is pleased to recognize the 2013 winner, Gary Harms, a Walmart Transportation professional truck driver based in Olathe, Kan. He also won the individual 5-Axle Sleeper driving competition. Gary has logged 30 years as a driver, with more than 1.7 million miles behind the wheel. His driving skills and knowledge of transportation and truck safety information topped those of 422 other professional truck drivers. Gary began competing in his

state truck driving championships in 2007, and this is his second trip to the NTDC. In 2011, he placed first in the 4- axle class. The NTDC – an annual contest among professional truck drivers – features the winners from 50 state trucking associations’ truck driving championships who participate in nine truck types. Collectively, these champions have driven 605,654,659 accident-free miles. Throughout the event, in their respective classes, drivers tested their expertise in the driving skills they use daily. The competition course inside the Salt Palace Convention Centre challenged their knowledge of safety, equipment, and the industry. The skills course tested drivers’ ability to judge distances; manoeuvre tight spaces; reverse, park, and position their vehicle exactly over scales, before barriers or around curves. “Bendix congratulates Gary Harms for earning

this year’s National Truck Driving Grand Champion award, and salutes the entire qualifying field of drivers who competed in the 2013 National Truck Driving Championships,” said Fred Andersky, Bendix Director of Government and Industry Affairs, and Director of Marketing – Charging. “Gary and all the participants deserve recognition for their tremendous driving achievements and commitment to highway safety. Bendix is proud to share their dedication. The National Truck Driving Championships illustrate the enormous impact that great drivers can have on improving highway safety for everyone.” Through its ever-growing portfolio of technology developments, Bendix delivers on safety, plus other areas critical to the success of both drivers and fleets. By improving vehicle performance and efficiency, and providing unparalleled post-sales support, Bendix aims to strengthen industry returns on investment in the equipment and technology that rewards everyone with safer roadways. b

Enter Sandman: North America’s Largest Articulating Crane Truck It hasn’t taken long for The Sandman of Alberta’s oil patch, Doug Watson, to raise eyebrows within the crane service industry of Western Canada. In fact, the latest addition of heavy metal into his Red Deer, Alberta-based fleet may begin to turn (or nod) a few heads. Together with Surreybased equipment supplier, Falcon Equipment, Watson officially unveiled the largest articulating crane truck ever introduced into the North American market at the recent Red Deer Oil and Gas Expo. Hoisted upon a stealthlike tridem-tridem Kenworth C500 Chassis, the 230 tonne-meter Cormach 230000A E9 Articulating Crane sat as groves of onlookers took note. The truck’s presence at the Expo, marked the culmination of nearly a year in the making; of which, Falcon employees Blair Norberg, Director of Sales, and Danny Bullock, Lead Fabricator, couldn’t pos-

sibly miss. “I think this truck raised a lot of eyebrows within the industry, and it was a great way for us to showcase our hardwork,” states Norberg. “We’re happy that the truck spoke to the care and innovation we put into all of our builds.” Joining Falcon was The Inland Group’s Jeff

McNeal, who provided the chassis out of Kenworth’s Fort St. John, BC location. “It was pretty exciting to see Doug’s third, and most impressive, truck launched into the market – no doubt, this one was a real showstopper.” As for the truck aptly named ‘Megatron’, Watson hopes that it will enhance his array of picker trucks that currently service British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. “She’ll be off to work as early as tomorrow,”

says Watson of his new toy. “I think this show helped us raise the bar to a new level, and we’re pretty excited to get the truck out there to see what it can do.” Fortunately, Watson is no stranger to pushing the envelope, and already has his sights on more of what Falcon Equipment can offer. Records are made to be broken, and with Watson, it’s entirely possible that next year’s Red Deer Oil and Gas Expo may mark the setting of a new feat. b
