By Louise Yako, BCTA President & CEO Most of us pay attention to rules about food safety. We keep an eye on “best before” dates and pack perishable foods in a cooler for picnics and camping trips, especially when the weather is as hot as it’s been lately in BC. Longer holidays usually feature trips from the campsite to a gas station or general store to replenish the cooler’s ice supply as well. These are simple measures, easy for vacationers to handle, and part of a pleasant summer holiday routine. Food safety is equally or more important for commercial companies that distribute or deliver fresh, frozen or perishable goods, especially given legislation that exists here and in the US governing food production, processing and storage, among other requirements. There are rules in the works for transporters offering refrigerated services as well, and reputable trucking companies are aware of these, with established procedures for ensuring the integrity of the products they move based on the needs of their clients. The BC Trucking Association (BCTA) includes numerous such companies among our members. The public relies on grocery stores, food producers and transporters to follow regulations and best practices in preparing, storing and moving their edible goods – in fact, most consumers don’t even think about the processes involved and shouldn’t have to. Businesses with long experience in food production and distribution build strong relationships with professional transporters to ensure their products get where they need to go on time and at the right temperature. Both the business (or “shipper”) and the transporter should understand the hazards involved in transporting food and invest in equipment, sanitation procedures and training to guarantee a shipment arrives safely and in good
condition. Businesses new to shipping food products may need some support, however. Given growing enthusiasm for small lot farming, urban farms and farmers’ markets, it’s conceivable that these and other fine food producers will expand as demand for their products increases. They may be able to deliver their own products now, but as they expand they will need to find a transportation contractor with more experience, equipment and established routes to carry their products to a broader range of markets, including grocery stores and restaurants. It may be tempting for new shippers of any type of perishable product to hire a transporter based on rates alone – and preferably the lowest, which may seem more competitive. But just as much care should go into choosing a transporter as went into the work that produced the foods being shipped. A good transporter, one that knows how crucial it is to maintain an unbro-
ken cold chain from shipper to receiver, is worth some investment. To find one, shippers should take time to review the website of a potential transportation partner. What does it talk about, in terms of temperature control, sanitation, staff procedures and training? The details to consider may seem overwhelming. Knowing what to look for and the questions to ask can help. To assist businesses in finding the right refrigerated services transporter, BCTA has developed three flyers to provide a few questions to ask a transporter about equipment and the procedures it follows, as well as some tips for preparing perishable products prior to shipment. These are available to the public on www.bctrucking.com. There are no strings attached to using them – whether refrigerated service providers are members of BCTA or not, it’s in everyone’s best interests to put food safety first. I don’t think there’s any question about that on a weekend camping trip – and, equally, there shouldn’t be when it comes to keeping fresh or frozen foods safe for a much larger and wider spread audience of consumers. b

Western Star Introduces The All-New 5700XE Adding the industry’s most advanced fuel saving technologies to the industry’s toughest trucks, Western Star Truck Sales, Inc. has now unveiled the all-new 5700XE. “XE – which stands for extreme efficiency – summarizes exactly what this new truck is all about,” said Michael Jackson, General Manager, Western Star. “By blending legendary Western Star ruggedness together with aerodynamic innovations, and the most fuel efficient powertrain available, we have built a powerful solution that is the best of both worlds – and unlike anything else on the road today.” The Class 8 on-highway truck is ideal for owneroperators and small to medium fleets in truckload/ LTL, bulk, refrigerated, long-haul and manufacturing applications. The 5700XE features a 126-inch
BBC with a set-back axle, and is available in a range of spacious and lightweight sleeper configurations. Aerodynamic: The Western Star Way “The 5700XE builds on proven aerodynamic technologies from parent company Daimler Trucks North America and adds edgy styling to set it apart from other trucks,” said Ann Demitruk, Director of Marketing for Western Star. All-new features such as an aerodynamic hood, roof, chassis and cab fairings reduce drag and increase efficiency. Additional performance features include: • A new sweptback fourpiece bumper with an under-bumper valance that contributes to aerodynamic efficiency. • New halogen headlights that are optimized for aerodynamic performance and excellent visibility.
• A state-of-the-art visor specifically engineered to work with the impressive slope in the hood’s rear air ramp to direct airflow over the cab without an aerodynamic penalty. • Roof and cab fairings that sweep back for tighter trailer gap and help direct air flow over and around the trailer. • Optional chassis side fairings that reduce drag by up to 6 percent while still providing easy access to batteries and DEF tank. • The Western Star Twin Force dual air intake, which feeds a massive centrally mounted air filter to improve efficiency. Western Star Strength, Detroit Power and the Detroit DT12 Transmission The 5700XE can be spec’d with the fuel-efficient Detroit DD15 engine.
The all-new 5700XE
The DD15, which features the proprietary asymmetric turbocharger and next-generation ACRS fuel system, delivers improved fuel efficiency and total cost of ownership while providing the power drivers demand. The 5700XE can also be spec’d with the Detroit DD16 engine, which, with up to 600 horsepower, delivers the maximum power many Western Star customers require; or the Detroit DD13 engine for regional and weight-conscious customers. The truck comes standard with the Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission that can be
mated to any of the Detroit engines offered. This transmission helps customers reduce the total cost of operation, significantly improves the driver experience, and contributes to improved driver safety. For ultimate efficiency, customers can select the new integrated Detroit Powertrain. Featuring the new downsped DD15 engine rated at 400 horsepower and 1750 foot-pound torque, DT12 transmission with Intelligent Powertrain Management and Detroit axles with specific configurations and gearing, the integrated Powertrain is engi-

neered to work together to achieve the highest level of efficiency. “Now customers can have both the most fuel-efficient powertrain available and unique quality and styling. In fact, our Daimler Trucks North America internal testing indicates that the 5700XE is competitive with the fuel-efficiency results of the leading truck model on the market,” said Demitruk. “We want to provide the latest in proven technologies that will benefit customers’ bottom line, and Detroit delivers on all fronts.” Continued on page T-6

The 5700XE is also equipped with the proprietary Detroit Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service, which is part of the Detroit Connect suite of integrated telematics solutions. Detroit Connect also includes Visibility fleet software and the forthcoming On-Board Tablet, as options for the 5700XE. Without Compromise: Western Star Style and Comfort Hand-built at the awardwinning DTNA Cleveland (N.C.) Truck Manufacturing Plant, the 5700XE has premium style and comfort features that are built to last. Full production on the 5700XE will begin in 2015. “With a modern and more aggressive interpretation of the classic exterior styling that Western Star is known for, drivers will be proud to be behind the wheel of the 5700XE,” said
Your Truck & Trailer Connection, Since 1971 Demitruk. “We’ve made sure to create an environment that they’ll enjoy being in during those long days on the road.” Inside the corrosionresistant galvannealed lightweight steel cab, drivers will appreciate the new adjustable steering column and steering wheel, featuring integrated controls that help drivers focus on the road ahead. The wellappointed and sound-resistant sleeper further contributes to the quiet and comfortable ride drivers expect from Western Star. “We considered every detail to create an incredibly comfortable, highly efficient truck that stands up to the extremely high expectations Western Star customers have,” said Demitruk. “The 5700XE will change the way people look at aerodynamic trucks, and the way they look at Western Star.” b

Kenworth T680 Advantage ‘Efficiency in Motion’ Tour Completes Canadian Leg When it comes to knowing the trucking industry, 40-year veteran Gary Crudge, General Sales Manager of Kenworth Truck Centres of Ontario, has seen it all. “The good and bad,” he jokes. “But I’ve never seen interest in fuel economy like I’m seeing now. With diesel at $1.33 a litre, our customers are seeking fuel economy information as fast as they can get it. And, with the Kenworth T680 Advantage ‘Efficiency in Motion’ tour at two of eight locations (Kenworth Hamilton and Kenworth London), we’ve never experienced crowds as big at our open houses. Everyone wanted to see the latest in fuel economy improvements and the tour delivered.” The 6-stop Canadian leg of the T680 Advantage Efficiency in Motion tour also visited Kenworth Ontario - Ottawa along with stops for dealer-hosted events in Québec at Kenworth Mas-
ka - St. Mathieu de Laprairie, Kenworth Montréal and Kenworth Québec. Kenworth customers came out to learn more about the T680 Advantage’s aerodynamics and optimized powertrain combination. Visitors also viewed the doubleexpanding, 53-foot tour trailer with an interactive, self-guided exhibit, where they learned more about the T680 Advantage, new Kenworth T880 vocational truck, and 12.9-liter PACCAR MX-13 engine, and Kenworth history. The new Kenworth T680 Advantage is Kenworth’s most fuel-efficient truck. It begins with the optimized powertrain combination of the 2014 PACCAR MX-13 engine and the Eaton Fuller Advantage automated transmission, Dana’s Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem drive axles, and the Kenworth aerodynamic package. As a result, the T680 Advantage with 76-inch sleeper
offers up to a 5 percent fuel economy improvement compared to last year’s T680 76-inch sleeper with 2013 PACCAR MX-13 engine, Eaton UltraShift PLUS LAS 10-speed transmission, and Dana DSP40 6x4. “Orders are already starting to come in after the tour came through our dealership in early July,” said Robert Cadrin, Kenworth Quebec’s Director General. “The T680 Advantage was rightly named because it is indeed loaded with advantages and our customers have noticed. Outside of all the aerodynamics and the creature comforts of the new truck, the PACCAR MX-13 engine is gaining huge traction in our market. More than 70 percent of our customers run 15 liter power, but we’ve been converting many of them to the fuel efficiency of the 12.9 liter PACCAR engine since its 500-hp rating, and 1850 lb-ft of torque give it plenty of power to haul heavy loads.”
“We’re finding that too,” said Crudge. “Since our loads are typically 140,000 pounds, 90 percent of our specs have historically been 15-liter engines. But, that’s changed with the PACCAR MX-13. Customers are converting. PACCAR did their homework on this engine. Drivers love the power; companies like the fuel economy and reliability.” Crudge also said the 52inch sleeper shown on a T680, to complement the 76-inch sleeper option, was a big hit. “Many of our customers were blown away by all the room in the 52inch sleeper,” Crudge said. “We have a lot of chip haulers, plus some petroleum haulers and they want the 52-inch sleeper since overnights are not as common, plus they can save upwards of 500 pounds. It’s a great addition to the product line. “I think the T680 matched with the PACCAR MX-13 engine is invigorating the industry with a leapfrog in fuel economy, just like the Kenworth T600 did many years ago,” added Crudge. “It’s an exciting and fuel efficient truck that’s setting new standards for our customers.” b

Bendix Honors Grand Champion Of 2014 ATA National Truck Driving Championships Following five days of competition, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC honours the Grand Champion winner of this year’s American Trucking Associations (ATA) National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC), held Aug. 12-16 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For the fourth consecutive year, Bendix is the proud sponsor of the Bendix National Truck Driving Championships Grand Champion Award, given to the event’s overall top driver. Bendix congratulates the 2014 Grand Champion, Jeffrey Langenhahn, a Conway Freight professional truck driver based in Plover, Wisconsin. He also won the individual twins truck driving competition. A professional driver for 28 years, Langenhahn has logged more than 1.9 million miles.
sional drivers tested their expertise in their respective classes through a written exam, a pre-trip inspection test, and a skills-based competition course. The skills course – staged inside Pittsburgh’s David L. Lawrence Convention Center – challenged drivers’ ability to judge distances; maneuver tight spaces; and reverse, park, and position their vehicles precisely over scales, before barriers, and around curves. “Bendix congratulates Jeffrey Langenhahn for earning this year’s Bendix National Truck Driving Championships Grand Champion Award and commends every driver who competed in the 2014 championships,” said Fred Andersky, Bendix Director of Government and Industry Affairs. “Each of the participants deserves recognition for their exceptional performance. We are proud to honour the dedication of these talented professionals and we know they share our commitment to enhancing highway safety. The National Truck Driving Championships shine a deserving light on these great drivers, the families who support
Langenhahn’s driving skills and knowledge of safety, equipment, and the industry earned him the top award over 426 other drivers. He began competing in his state truck driving championships in 1997, and this year marks his fourth trip to the National Truck Driving Championships. The NTDC is an annual competition among professional truck drivers from across the United States. It features winners from company, state, and regional levels, competing in nine classes of competition. Collectively, these champions have driven 653,677,080 accident-free miles. Each year, the NTDC attracts more than 2,000 friends, family, colleagues, and spectators. At the competition, the industry’s best profes-

them, and the critical role they play in keeping roadways safe for everybody.” Bendix plans to continue its sponsorship of the Grand Champion Award as just one part of its robust, ongoing efforts to promote commercial vehicle and highway safety. Bendix delivers on safety, plus other areas critical to the success of both driv-
Page T-7 ers and fleets, through its ever-growing portfolio of technology developments and solutions. Andersky noted that while these technologies are designed to complement safe driving practices, no commercial vehicle safety technology replaces the most important safety components – a skilled, alert driver exercising safe driving techniques
and proactive, comprehensive driver training. “By improving vehicle performance and efficiency, and providing unparalleled post-sales support, Bendix aims to help fleets and vehicle operators maintain lower total cost of ownership for equipment and technology, contributing to safer roadways for everyone,” Andersky added. b

Cummins Inc. recently announced that it has received certification for its 6.7L Turbo Diesel from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), meeting the Low-Emission Vehicle III (LEV III) standards. This new standard applies to all vehicles under 14,000 pounds GVWR. The Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel powers the Ram HeavyDuty lineup, and is the first medium-duty diesel engine in the 8,501-14,000 pound GVWR segment to be certified to the new 2015 LEV III standards. “At Cummins, we demand that everything we do leads to a cleaner, healthier
and safer environment,” said Jeff Caldwell, general manager – Pickup Business. “Being the first in this segment to certify to these new standards demonstrates our continued commitment to the environment, and meeting more stringent requirements without hardware changes allows us to maintain the proven capability and reliability that our customers have grown to expect.” Under LEV III, the Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and Non-Methane Organic Gas (NMOG) standards are combined into a single NOx+NMOG standard, along with extension of emissions-useful life to
150,000 miles for emissions control systems. LEV III standards also introduce more stringent NOx+NMOG fleet average requirements, which phase in from MY 2015-2022 for all medium-duty vehicles. These new standards were adopted by the Air Resources Board (ARB) in January 2012. This comes as Cummins implements its most comprehensive environmental sustainability plan ever. The plan, announced in early 2014, builds on past successes to address the company’s biggest opportunities to make a positive environmental impact — from the materials it buys to its products in use. The plan also includes specific goals for Cummins to reduce its environmental footprint. b

National Trucking Week 2014: Sharing The Cost Of Safety When a heavy truck is involved in a road incident – a tractor-trailer jackknifes or there’s a rollover or crash – people can be quick to question the expertise and professionalism of the truck driver. Yes, professional truck drivers must take responsibility for transporting their vehicles and cargo safely, but they are only the most visible link in a supply chain that includes many others who also influence safety outcomes. Buyers, sellers, shippers, distributors, trucking companies and even consumers all need to share the cost of safety. If we continue to download these costs onto professional truck drivers, we’ll all suffer. That may seem a somewhat negative way to draw attention to National Trucking Week, which was recently celebrated from September 7 to 13, 2014, but it’s meant as a wakeup call. Professional truck
drivers contribute daily to our comfort and well-being – more, in fact, than any other occupation. Everything we use – our clothing, most of our food, the devices we rely on, the gasoline that powers our vehicles and buses (even your bicycle, if that’s your vehicle of choice) – came to us through the assistance of a professional truck driver. Tens of thousands of drivers deliver these goods safely and efficiently across BC, Canada and North America without fail, and they deserve a tribute. We need them. Unless something changes, however, there will soon be fewer and fewer professional truck drivers to rely on. Driving a truck can be a satisfying and rewarding career, but it’s also tough. Professional truck drivers have to be flexible and tolerant enough to contend with hours of service regulations that stipulate how
long to work and rest, the vagaries of weather and traffic, the demands and expectations of many different shippers, and “just in time” scheduling that maximizes productivity (but not necessarily their needs, including family time). One thing that can and should change is the onus placed on some professional truck drivers to absorb the cost of delays over which they have no control and outside pressure to drive longer than is safe – or even legal. Recently, Anne Ferro, then-administrator of the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), noted during an interview that the responsibility for safety needs to be
PARTS, SALES AND SERVICE
more balanced and widely shared along the supply chain. Ms. Ferro suggested it’s essential for trucking companies to charge their customers rates that allow them to pay professional drivers for all their time on duty, including for delays at warehouses, border crossings, and terminals or when roads are closed. Individual drivers who are fully paid for their work are far less likely to try to make up losses suffered by delays and to drive when fatigued. For a leader of a regulatory agency as influential as the FMCSA, which sets rules for trucking companies and drivers operating in the US, to make such a strong connection between safety and the treatment of professional truck drivers by others is significant. To further redistribute the safety burden, shippers should also be more publicly accountable for the trucking partners they choose. Shippers that look only for the lowest rates
tend to contract with trucking companies that may cut safety corners. Instead of looking at rates and statistics for on-time deliveries only, shippers should ask questions about a trucking company’s safety programs, hiring and disciplinary practices, and deployment of technology to enhance safety practices, and generally educate themselves about all the underlying costs that contribute to a reasonable rate for transportation services. When crashes occur - which will happen regardless of how careful, prepared and safety-conscious trucking companies and professional drivers are - investigations regarding the cause need to extend beyond the trucking company involved to the customer. Historically and all too frequently, the trucking industry and professional drivers have been at the mercy of shippers who tend to have greater pow-

er in the relationship due to the highly fragmented and competitive structure of the trucking industry. But the tide is changing: demand for trucking services is increasing as the industry struggles to attract and retain qualified and skilled professional drivers. Ms. Ferro also commented on this situation, recognizing an opportunity for trucking companies and owner-operators to stand tough and “shut out” shippers that abuse their services. National Trucking Week is always a good time to reflect on the state of our industry and the role it plays in supporting our daily lives and to acknowledge the many men and women who are employed as professional drivers. To our great fortune, they take the responsibilities placed upon them seriously. Going forward, it would be even better to see others sharing those responsibilities fairly as well. b

Kenworth T880 Provides Outstanding Performance For Ontario Log Hauler Steven Nychuk and his company’s drivers must be prepared for just about anything. As an excavating and log hauling company based in Englehart, Ontario, S Nychuk Excavating’s trucks routinely hit deep potholes and hard knobs and climb or descend steep hills when delivering logs from contract sales on Crown forest lands in Ontario’s boreal forest region to area mills. Nychuk’s trucks haul various species of logs including jack pine, white birch and balsam fir as a subcontractor for other contractors with loggers, skidders and other logging equipment out in the woods. When hauling logs, Nychuk trucks average about three trips per day, generally at a gross weight of 57,000 kilograms or about 125,000 pounds on each trip. The trucks also pull over-dimensional loads on float trailers with four or
five axles. The over-dimensional loads generally consist of the company’s own loaders or various equipment for road building and paving contractors. “We need trucks equipped for a variety of on-highway and off-highway hauling,” said Nychuk. The company recently took delivery of its first Kenworth T880, equipped with air suspension, a 52inch sleeper, a 500-hp PACCAR MX-13 engine and an 18-speed transmission. The T880 is assigned to his father-in-law, Carson Presseault. For more than 25 years, Nychuk has relied on Kenworth trucks, and local Kenworth dealer Timmins Kenworth and New Liskeard Kenworth in northern Ontario to assist the company in choosing the right specifications for those trucks. The company operates a fleet made up of three tractors, including

the new T880, to haul logs and equipment and three straight trucks with dump bodies to haul gravel and aggregate. Its usual Kenworth truck of choice, the Kenworth T800, a popular mainstay in the logging industry, has provided the company a stout, reliable platform for years. While logging companies are typically hesitant to try something new, Nychuk gave the Kenworth T880 a try at the recommendation of Timmins Kenworth. “When you see the Kenworth T880, you definitely see a difference in how it looks,” Nychuk said. “It’s certainly caught people’s attention out there in the bush. Loggers really like its look.” But the biggest differences with the Kenworth T880 that’s caught Nychuk’s attention, and the attention of other logging truck operators, involve
the productivity gains its new features offer. Its larger panoramic windshield allows the driver to see more of the road. “One of the major reasons I bought the Kenworth T880 was its simplified wiring harnesses,” Nychuk added. “It’s clear to me that when Kenworth engineers designed this truck they took into consideration the needs of truck operators for a more simplified layout. It makes for much easier servicing.” Nychuk also appreciates the performance of the 500-hp PACCAR MX13 engine. It offers all the torque and horsepower drivers need to pull heavy loads even though it has a smaller displacement than the standard 15-liter engine the company typically chooses. “The Kenworth T880 has a shorter sleeper - 52inch instead of 60-inch, but it still feels a lot bigger,” he added. “When Carson moves between the seats, he can actually stand up. It’s a much more comfortable work environment for him.” Its larger panoramic windshield allows the driv-

And though it may seem simple, drivers really like the truck’s new mirror setup, Nychuk said. “Where the mirrors are located on the Kenworth T880 makes it much easier for drivers to navigate in and out of a log yard and to see where loggers are standing when they are out in the bush. It’s second to none.” Nychuk said his company generally replaces trucks, which travel an average of about 120,000 kilometers annually, ev-
ery three years. Having good equipment that not only looks good, but also provides reliable service to contractors is key to the company’s success. Nychuk said the typical high resale value of a Kenworth truck makes it easier to follow through on that aggressive trade cycle. “We’re looking forward to getting the same high resale value for this Kenworth T880 that we get from our other Kenworths,” he said. b
Kenworth T880 Adds Natural Gas Option Kenworth Truck Company is adding a natural gas option for the Kenworth T880, the company’s flagship vocational truck. The Kenworth T880 day cab and 52-inch mid-roof sleeper configurations now can be specified with the factory-installed Cummins Westport ISX12 G 400-hp natural gas engine with 1,450 lb-ft of torque. The ISX12 G is available with manual, automatic and Eaton UltraShift Plus transmission options, including 10-speed LAS and 13-speed MHP series. The natural gas option is ideal for Kenworth T880 dump trucks, mixer, refuse, pickup and delivery vehicles, and other applications operating with up to a maximum of 80,000-lb. gross combined vehicle
weight (GCVW). The Cummins Westport ISX12 G can run on either CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) or LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fuel systems. The engine uses a maintenance-free, three-way catalyst and does not require a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank, diesel particulate filter (DPF) or selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. Kenworth works with such companies as Agility Fuel Systems, Trilogy Engineered Solutions, and McNeilus to provide natural gas tanks and fueling systems. The Kenworth T880 entered full production at late 2013, and is already has become Kenworth’s new vocational truck of choice for fleets and truck operators. b

Daimler Trucks North America Celebrates The Production Of Its 3,000,000th Vehicle Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) recently marked the production of its 3,000,000th vehicle in North America. The milestone was commemorated by the delivery of a Freightliner Cascadia Evolution to representatives from Schneider at DTNA’s manufacturing facility in Cleveland, North Carolina.
“Daimler Trucks North America is committed to pacing the industry in terms of engineering and manufacturing excellence, as well as production of vehicles that provide a real total cost of ownership solution for our customers,” said Roger Nielsen, Chief Operating Officer, Daimler Trucks North America. “This
Kenworth Class 8 Trucks Available With Spicer AdvanTEK 40 Tandem Axle Kenworth has added Dana’s Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem axle for new Class 8 pickup and delivery, regional haul and linehaul trucks equipped with the Kenworth AG380 or AG400L suspension. “The Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem axle is an excellent, fuel-efficient addition for new Kenworth Class 8 trucks,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth Marketing Director. “The AdvanTEK 40 axle is featured as a key part of the special Kenworth T680 Advantage configuration designed to help Kenworth customers maximize fuel efficiency.” The Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle incorporates leading design solutions, such as innovative gearing, which can help increase fuel economy, improve reliability, reduce vehicle weight, and decrease total ownership costs, accord-
ing to Dana. The axle was developed with some of the industry’s fastest axle ratios to handle higher torque and lower engine RPM at cruise speed. Axle ratios of 2.26, 2.39, 2.53, 2.64 and 2.79 are available on Kenworth Class 8 trucks, including the T680 and T880. The innovative and patented technologies offered on AdvanTEK 40 include a flow-through lubrication system for the inter-axle differential; high-efficiency, on-demand lubrication pump; no maintenance Utube breather; wheel differential locks; innovative lube flow enhancements; and the SelecTTrac solution for wide-based singletire configurations. achievement is a testament to the dedication to excellence by Daimler Trucks North America’s employees past, present and future.” The 3,000,000th vehicle is the first Freightliner Cascadia Evolution to be equipped with the new 6x2 Detroit integrated Powertrain package. Featuring the Detroit DD15 engine, Detroit DT12 transmission and Detroit axles, the integrated Powertrain provides state-ofthe-art component communication to achieve the highest level of performance. The new Detroit integrated Powertrain will be available in full production in the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution in January 2015. “The Detroit integrated Powertrain exemplifies the pioneering, innovative spirit that has propelled Freightliner to undisputed market leadership in the commercial vehicle in-
dustry in North America,” said Richard Shearing, Vice President of National Accounts for Daimler Trucks North America. “We are the only OEM that designs, engineers and manufacturers a completely integrated Powertrain and we are pleased to debut the new Detroit integrated Powertrain in our 3,000,000th vehicle.” Schneider, one of the nation’s largest truckload carriers, took possession of the landmark truck. “A milestone like the one Daimler is celebrating today is no small feat,” said Rob Reich, Senior Vice President at Schneider. “We have owned more than 25,000 Freightliner trucks over the years and are honoured to have the company’s 3-millionth truck join our fleet. Thank you, and congratulations on continuing to improve a great product.” Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Setting the pace for the industry in terms of real total cost of ownership, with over 50,000 orders since its start of production in 2013, the Cascadia Evolution builds on the technologies of our previous on-high-
Page T-11 way truck models—engine efficiency, advanced aerodynamics, fleet management tools—to deliver up to a 7 percent increase in fuel economy over its 2010 EPA-compliant predecessor. Integrated Detroit Powertrain - New Rating, More Efficiency The integrated Detroit Powertrain features the flagship DD15 engine, with new downsped rating of 400hp and 1750 lb/ft. The downsped rating enables the engine to turn at lower RPMs regardless of road speed, ultimately reducing fuel consumption and friction. Detroit Intelligent Powertrain Management Already engineered for economy and safety, the integrated DT12 continues to push the innovation envelope with the new Intelligent Powertrain Management (IPM). This powerful technology uses pre-loaded terrain maps and GPS to know the route ahead and automatically adjusts transmission and engine functions, resulting in an even smoother ride. Features such as eCoast, a technology specific to the DT12 that allows the en-
gine to operate at idle of 500 RPM when road and driver inputs don’t require engine power to move the truck down the road, and creep mode, which improves low-speed maneuverability, perform with the powertrain to benefit performance. New Detroit Axle Configuration Working together with the DD15 engine and DT12 transmission, the new Detroit rear axles integrate effortlessly to provide optimum performance. Detroit now offers a 6x2 configuration with a 2.28 ratio that is specifically designed to work with the downsped engine rating, making it the fastest ratio available while still providing the performance drivers demand. The 6x2 Detroit axle configuration incorporates a non-driven tag axle on the tandem, reducing total weight by almost 400 lbs. A new 2.41 ratio in its 6x4 axle configuration is also available for applications requiring superior traction. The integrated Detroit Powertrain includes steer axles that use low-friction needle bearings for maximum maneuverability and minimal maintenance. b

Each year, the OE evaluates its more than 1,000 North American suppliers using its EBSC (External Balance Score Card). EBSC values, consisting of more than 100 criteria, score DTNA’s best-performing suppliers against four core categories: quality and warranty, supply, cost, and technology. “We are honoured to
be recognized by a respected and valued customer like Daimler Trucks North America,” said Mike Pogorelc, Plant Manager for Bendix at Huntington. “This recognition is an important reflection of our ongoing commitment to the highest quality performance – delivering the best possible products and services for our customers.” The Bendix Huntington campus, consisting of four manufacturing facilities, opened in February 1980. Huntington’s quality program – based on the Knorr Production System (KPS) quality, productivity, and continuous improvement culture – engages each of the campus’ more than 400 employees in shaping the plant’s success. To establish Huntington’s KPS quality program, Pogorelc and his team anticipated every opportunity for a process to fail, and then implemented systems not only to eliminate the delivery of substandard material but also to prevent its

Kenworth now offers the new Dana Spicer EconoTrek 6x2 tandem axle for order with new Kenworth Class 8 on-highway trucks. Key benefits of the durable, Spicer EconoTrek lightweight drive and tag axle configuration include enhanced fuel economy, weight savings, improved performance, and reduced maintenance. “The 6x2 configuration is becoming more popular with fleets and truck
operators in their efforts to achieve fuel economy gains while also saving weight and increasing payload,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth Marketing Director. “The addition of Spicer EconoTrek provides Kenworth customers with yet another avenue to fuel efficiency.” According to Dana, Spicer EconoTrek is up to 3 percent more fuel efficient compared to traditional 6x4 tandem axles. It also is more than 300 pounds
driver. These same sensors can then off-load driver functions through driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane keeping when they are needed. “We believe enhanced safety is achieved when the vehicle is able to automatically take action in critical situations when the driver does not,” said Schwarting. “This is a first critical step on the path to automated driving.” b initial creation. In the past year, the plant has implemented more than 1,600 process improvement ideas. Lori Mickley, Quality Assurance Manager for Bendix at Huntington, cites idea generation and employees’ initiative to personally address quality improvements as key to plant success. The manufacturing campus has consistently been recognized by customers, like DTNA and others, for its outstanding quality performance. “Becoming a trusted supplier comes from constant dedication, open twoway communication with customers, and a no-tolerance attitude for deficiencies,” Mickley said. “Quality can’t be important to the leadership alone. It has to be important to everyone.” Daimler Trucks North America LLC, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is the leading heavy-duty truck manufacturer in North America. It manufactures, sells, and services commercial vehicles under the Freightliner, Western Star, Detroit, and Thomas Built Buses nameplates. Daimler Trucks North America is a Daimler company. b lighter than Kenworth’s standard 40,000-lb. drive axle configuration. The drive and tag axles can accommodate both dual and wide-base tires and gear ratios range from 2.53 to 7.83. “EconoTrek is also a good fuel-efficiency option for the Kenworth T680 Advantage, which already is Kenworth’s most fuel-efficient truck,” said Swihart. EconoTrek features a robust housing design. It is optimized for use with electronic controlled load distribution air suspension systems and must be specified with the Kenworth AG380 or AG400L suspensions. b

Hendrickson Introduces Progressive Load Spring For HAULMAAX Hendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems announces an additional advancement in its suspension technology with the introduction of the new Progressive Load Spring (PLS) for its industry leading HAULMAAX vocational rear suspension system. The PLS is an elastomeric spring which works in concert with the bolster springs in Hendrickson’s patented Vari-Rate Spring system providing unparalleled ride quality in both the loaded and unloaded conditions. The new Progressive
Load Spring will improve the already rugged and reliable HAULMAAX rear suspension system by providing key advancements in ride quality and stability. The PLS is continuously engaged, thus providing excellent unloaded ride performance. As payload increases, the spring further engages and functions together with the rubber bolster springs to provide additional stability. The PLS’s constant engagement also eliminates the need for shim adjustments for most applications, resulting in reduced maintenance and
Trucking Invests $7.5 Billion A Year In Safety The American Trucking Associations (ATA) recently told Congress that the trucking industry invests more than $7.5 billion every year in preventing crashes on US highways. “The trucking industry places safety at the top of its priority list,” ATA Executive Vice-President Dave Osiecki told the Senate Commerce Committee’s subcommittee on surface transportation and merchant marine infrastructure, safety and security. “Our industry spends more than $7.5 billion each year
on safety, and that investment is making a difference.” He pointed out that over the past decade the number of large trucks involved in fatal crashes has dropped 17% – even with the industry operating an additional 2.7 million trucks and driving an additional 54 billion miles. “More trucks, billions more miles, fewer crashes.” The $7.5 billion in investments goes towards things like safety training, safety-related bonuses
Know A Trucker Worthy Of Knighthood? OTA Taking Nominations Now Our truck drivers are our most important assets and the face of the industry. If you have a safe truck driver in your fleet who exemplifies the highest code of conduct and chivalry on the highway, now’s your chance to promote them to the 2015-2016 Road Knights Team. Hurry, though, the deadline to nominate your Road Knight is only a few months away! Road Knights are a group of truck drivers who serve as ambas-
sadors throughout the trucking community. Every so often they get a chance to step out of their cabs to meet with the media, community groups, safety organizations, school kids, and car clubs. They play a key role in enhancing public understanding of how to safely share the road with a truck, the professionalism of truck drivers, the critical role trucking plays in the economy and the numerous careers that the industry offers.
lowered cost. “PLS is another example of how our customers drive innovation at Hendrickson. By listening to our customers and monitoring the trucking industry, we are able to continuously improve our products, and we are never complacent with our technology,” said David McCleave, Director of Marketing for Hendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems. The introduction of the Progressive Load Spring technology is a testament to Hendrickson’s 100-year history of commitment to innovation, continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. Contact your local Hendrickson sales representative for more information. b and safety technologies. Osiecki said the investments are only part of the solution and called on the federal government to do more to address the causes of crashes. “Driver error causes most crashes. More specifically, driver mistakes and driver misbehaviours – by both professional drivers and passenger vehicle drivers,” he said, pointing out that behaviour and actions of car drivers contribute significantly to truck crash numbers. “If the regulatory, enforcement and safety program lens is focused properly on the most common mistakes and misbehaviours by all involved in the safety equation, big safety gains are possible.” b Ontario-based drivers employed by an OTA member carrier, with a first-class driving record, are eligible to be nominated. OTA strongly encourages carriers to allow these essential drivers to be recognized within the trucking community. If you know of a driver in your ranks who has a solid record of safe driving and a keen enthusiasm for the job, please consider nominating them today. OTA will be accepting nominations until Dec. 5, 2014. For more details of the program and to download a nomination form, go to ontruck.org/road -knights/. b

GTT Introduces Revolutionary Traffic Sensing Technology GTT, designers of the leading-edge Canoga 9000 Series, introduces the first traffic sensing solution to add speed, class and count to detection capabilities in a single width, four-channel traffic management card. This revolutionary technology gives traffic engineers access to more information about vehicles on the nation’s roadways — with more consistency and accuracy. “The Canoga 9000 Series sets a new standard for traffic sensing technology,” said Tim Hall, GTT’s Market Development Director. “With our innovative, single-loop technology, traffic engineers can use a single card to obtain information that traditionally requires two sets of cards and sensors. Our new technology provides more information with less guesswork, so

engineers can make more accurate decisions that improve traffic flow and enhance safety.” Traditional, four-channel cards are compatible with inductive loop systems, which allow field technicians to swap out legacy traffic management detection cards with a single card that adds additional functionality including, speed, class and count. Historically, two cards were needed to obtain the same information. “We believe traffic engineers should be the first to know when and how traffic is changing in their community,” said Hall. “Now, capturing important vehicle information has never been more convenient.” Canoga includes Ethernet so it can connect to GTT’s Central Management

Software (CMS). Traffic engineers can use CMS to access key data, run customized reports, and receive maintenance alerts—all in real time, all from a remote location. Canoga Anywhere, Anytime “Canoga offers more information so engineers can make better, faster decisions,” said Hall. “Engineers can use it to adjust timing for signalized intersections, to record stateand federal-mandated traffic counts, or just for a more accurate count of the number of vehicles on the road.” The new Canoga cards are easily interchanged with sensors already installed. The cards can even be used to capture information about vehicles in parking lots, or to capture information about bicyclists in bike lanes. Because it captures more information using fewer cards, GTT is confident that the new Canoga single-loop card will be used in even more applications, including as a replacement for standard inductive loop cards, in the near future. b

Detroit DT12 Transmission Available For New Western Stars Western Star Truck Sales, Inc., recently announced the introduction of the Detroit DT12 transmission into its all-new Western Star 5700XE model. The Detroit DT12 transmission will be standard on the 5700XE. “The DT12 complements the extreme efficiency of the 5700XE by providing enhanced fuel economy, vehicle performance and safety,” said Ann Demitruk, Director of Marketing for Western Star. “Customers will appreciate significant driver advantages found with the DT12 transmission coupled with the expected performance from a Western Star truck.” Part of the Detroit product offering, the DT12 maximizes fuel efficiency for long-haul applications while significantly improving the driver experience. Also available in the 5700XE are the Detroit DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines as well as Detroit axles. In addition, every 5700XE comes standard
with the proprietary Detroit Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service. Commented Demitruk, “Fleets can now choose a complete Detroit powertrain for ease of service and optimized performance and efficiency.” The DT12 is a fully automated manual transmission featuring high-speed, computer-controlled shift and clutch actuators that automatically and seamlessly select the right shift pattern and perfect clutch engagement for fuel economy and driving conditions. Other features, such as Creep Mode, which simulates a torque converter to improve low speed maneuverability, Skip Shift which automatically skips gears to achieve cruising speed sooner, and eCoast which enables vehicles to coast when the requested speed can be achieved or maintained with the engine operating at idle speeds while preserving momentum – will further maximize fuel efficiency and performance of the 5700XE.
“The DT12 has been available for less than two years, and we’ve had an extremely positive reaction from customers,” said Brad Williamson, Manager, Engine and Component marketing for Daimler Trucks North America. “We have high expectations that Western Star customers will experience the power and driver-friendly benefits of the transmission – benefits that will make the 5700XE one of the most efficient and powerful trucks in the industry.” For additional information, and to find a local dealer, visit WesternStar. com b

Allison Transmission Unveils Integrated Stop-Start Technology Allison Transmission Holdings Inc. recently announced new integrated stop-start technology in conjunction with Project ETHOS, an ultra-low carbon powertrain program created by Cummins Inc. to demonstrate the potential of alternative fuels for carbon dioxide (CO2) reductions in medium-duty commercial vehicles. In partnership with the California Energy Commission, Cummins developed an engine that uses E85 (a high-octane blend of ethanol and gasoline) as a fuel to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions significantly. The Cummins ETHOS 2.8L engine is coupled with an Allison 2000 Series fully automatic transmission which utilizes integrated stop-start for further emissions reduction, as well as increased fuel economy. Integrated stop-start shuts the engine down when the operator presses the brake pedal and the vehicle comes to a complete stop. The transmission remains
in drive during this time and locks the output to help prevent vehicle rollback by using an electric pump. As the driver’s foot is lifted from the brake, the system automatically starts the engine to allow acceleration. “Integrated stop-start is an exciting development that represents the natural evolvement of our product technology,” said Randall R. Kirk, Vice President of Product Engineering for Allison Transmission. “We are continuously researching solutions to help our end-users reduce their carbon footprint through reduced emissions and fuel consumption.” Allison worked closely with Cummins to integrate the 2550 transmission model for smooth and efficient stop-start operation. The transmission is equipped with specific hydraulic circulation features to ensure smooth operation during stopstart driving. Additionally, all Allison Automatics provide Continuous Power Technology with
Page T-15
seamless full-power shifts to put engine power to the drive wheels in the most efficient way. The result is faster acceleration and higher average road speed for quicker route times and greater productivity. Testing and validation were conducted using test cells and a prototype delivery step van provided by Freightliner Custom Chassis. Valvoline provided NextGen engine oils specifically designed for lower CO2 emissions. According to Cummins, with more than 1,500 hours accumulated on the ETHOS 2.8L engine over the past 2½ years, the technology has proven capable of far exceeding the 50 percent CO2 emission reductions outlined as the project goals. To complete on-road validation testing and give visibility to the project, a vehicle driving demonstration took place on public roads in California during June and July. While the powertrain system and vehicle are for testing and demonstration purposes only, market demand and production logistics are currently being explored. b
