EDITOR’S NOTE W

elcome to the February Issue of Surrey Rocks. Hope you all had a not so blue January with 5 weekends and freezing temperatures, we’re personally pleased to see the back of it!

So, after the hardship of January we enter February. This will be a month of optimism and new-found freedom. A month where we can get together and celebrate what’s good in life, now Covid restrictions have ceased. This month will see an upsurge in dining out, sporting activities, clubbing, pubbing, reconnecting and general going out, out. C’mon Surrey this is our month. Enjoy!! There’s lots of offers and new venues opening – see our What’s On and Calendar Pages (pages 11-13) to find out more. With Valentine’s Day just round the corner we thought we’d put trivial gifts and naff cards to one side and concentrate on the real crux of the matter… what makes a relationship work? With divorce rates sky-rocketing to near the 50% mark we spoke to couples that have stood the test of time and questioned what really makes love last? Check out the answers from couples we interviewed in Surrey to find out the key to everlasting love. Ladies, make a statement this Valentine’s Day with a long red dress. Karen Millen are known for their quality fabric and unique designs. We have found an abstract floral red and white jersey dress at £165 in Minted. Alternatively, try a skimming, pleated dress from new label Style Cheat that ticks all the boxes for glamour in For Her Skinted. We also bring you the latest Tech News including hologram video calls and iPhone 14 leaks as well as top outerwear fashion finds in this month’s For Him page. Plus, check out ‘Best of the Web’ dedicated to Boris Johnson and his plethora of parties at Number 10. Or not as he still tries to insist.

everyone’s talking about...

HALLE BERRY WEDDING HOAX Halle Berry has confirmed that she was drunk when she posted pictures of her and musician boyfriend Van Hunt at an altar, making it look like they had actually got married. The Oscar-winning actress shared the story with Jimmy Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show’ after duping the public and all her celebrity pals on New Year’s Day. She explains in the interview how she was walking back after drinks at the bar on holiday when her and Hunt passed a Chapel where they staged a just got married picture alongside the headline “Well...IT’S OFFICIAL!” Halle, 55, ascertains it was an

Instagram joke that majorly backfired. She had no idea until later on how seriously it would be taken as no one swiped right to see the It’s 2022 picture she shared on the same post. The Rock and Ava DuVernay were amongst pals that shared their best wishes. After 20 minutes or so she said, “We are such assholes! No one got it.” Halle and Hunt, 51, have been dating since September 2020 and have recently participated in a commitment ceremony led by her son Maceo (NOT a marriage!) although friends of the couple say marriage is definitely on the cards.

ANDREW FACING A TUMULTUOUS YEAR Prince Andrew has had his worst fears confirmed. The US lawsuit he is facing against Virginia Giuffre for sex abuse, that he was hoping to have thrown out, is now being prepared to go to trial later this year. This is all despite Andrew’s lawyer dubbed “good news Gary” promising that it would never go that far. Andrew had crisis talks with the Queen last month, who has since stripped him of his royal patronages and military titles, and he is now having to pay for his Court Case on his own merit. A further embarrassment to the Queen on the year of her Platinum Jubilee, marking her 70 year reign. According to reports, this could cost the Duke of York in excess of £10 million if mum-ofthree Giuffre

14 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 06

pushes forward with the case, as she is saying she is intending to. Guiffre is ascertaining that Andrew sexually abused her when she was 17 years old after being trafficked by Ghislaine Maxwell and the late Jeffrey Epstein. Royals are begging Andrew to try and settle out of court to save the Queen and The Royal Family further embarrassment, especially after his cataclysmic BBC2 ‘Newsnight’ documentary last year, which saw Andrew fall in popularity in all the polls.

NEWS BRAD PITT DATING SWEDISH BEAUTY Brad Pitt is dating his Swedish neighbour, Lykke Li, after igniting what started as a friendship when Lykke moved into a neighbouring Hollywood mansion, a few minutes from Pitts, several months ago. Angelina’s ex has been pictured with the 35-year-old singer a few times now and this is seen to be “definitely more than a friendship” according to reports. Indie singer Lykke is divorced too with one child Dion, aged five, while Brad, 58, has six children with Angelina Jolie. Apparently, Pitt and Lykke’s friendship as neighbours transformed into a relationship a while ago but “has flown under the radar thanks to their living arrangements.” Pitt has only been linked with one other girlfriend, German model Nicole Poturalski since his 2016 divorce to Jolie. This relationship with Lykke, three months down the line, is great for Pitt who has tried to regain

his career and role as a father in the last few years. This is not the first case of neighbours becoming “more than just friends.” Kourtney Kardashian started dating her neighbour Blink-182 rocker Travis Barker in February last year. In October the singer proposed to the reality TV star on an LA beach, surrounded by roses and candles, making a K and T in the centre.

KANYE DISSES KIM’S NEW BOYFRIEND

Kanye West has been spreading rumours about estranged wife Kim’s new boyfriend Pete Davidson, allegedly telling people that the ‘Suicide Squad’ actor “has got AIDS.” According to news website TMZ, sources close to Pete heard the rumour after DJ Akademiks made the claim during a livestream video. A source told the publication: “Kanye’s been telling everybody within earshot.” The pair have had words and apparently there is a lot of friction. The news comes just a month after Kanye split with his girlfriend Venetria following a 3-month romance and vowed to get back with his ex Kim in a heartwarming appeal. West, 44, declared his love to her at a charity concert begging her to “come running back to him.”

JASON MOMOA CAMPING OUT

‘Aquaman’ star Jason Momoa is sleeping in a camper van following his separation from Lisa Bonet after 17 years together. ‘The Game of Thrones’ actor, 42, has been pictured in his $750K camper van pottering around without his wedding ring. He moved out of his California home he shared with Bonet, 54, and has been living in the Hollywood Hills in a neighbour’s front garden for several weeks now. Bonet and Momoa have two children together, 13-year-old Nokoa Wolf and 14-year-old Lola. Their relationship has said to be under strain for some time now, especially since Momoa’s gruelling filming schedule for ‘Aquaman 2.’

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR MEATLOAF Celebrity tributes have poured in for ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ singer Meatloaf after he passed away aged 74 last month, due to complications with Covid. Fellow rocker Alice Cooper said, “There was nobody, and I mean nobody like Meatloaf. His shoes can never be filled.” Queen guitarist Brian May who worked alongside the star, said “he was completely gutted.” He wrote on his Instagram: “Always full of madness, with the innocent sense of naughtiness of a five-year-old, Meat was forever young.” Cher recalled having “so much fun with him” during their 1981 track ‘Dead Ringer For Love’ while Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote: “The vaults of heaven will be ringing with rock. RIP Meatloaf.”

BEAM ME UP SCOTTY Could holograms be about to replace video calls? Well, we may be a few years off this Star Trek-esque technology becoming mainstream but a recent Swiss watch CEO utilised this emerging tech to attend a conference in China recently - and tech pundits are saying holograms are going to be the next big thing. Discussing the flight restrictions put in place by Covid 19, David Nussbaum, the boss of US holograms firm Portl said they were able to send a life size hologram of Swiss watchmaker, Christoph Grainger-Herr, to Shanghai instead.

So far, the US-based company counts T-Mobile and Netflix among their customers but believes it will be mainstream within the next 5 years. RECIPE STEAK & ALE PIE Perfect for those cold winter nights, The Hairy Bikers Steak & Ale pie recipe is really easy to follow and delicious too. You can’t beat good, hearty British grub for a bit of comfort food and Si and Dave don’t disappoint with this famous recipe.

INGREDIENTS

• 900g stewing steak, diced • 25g flour, plus extra for dusting • 100g butter • 2 onions roughly chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped • 2 medium carrots, roughly chopped • 150g button mushrooms • 2 sprigs fresh thyme • 400ml good-quality ale • 500ml beef stock • Salt and pepper • 1 egg, beaten for glazing • 300g ready-made rolled puff pastry

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/428°F/Gas Mark 7. 2. Pour flour into a bowl and season well. Coat the meat with the seasoned flour. 3. Heat half the butter in a heated pan and add the meat. Sear all over until golden brown.

4. Add the vegetables, herbs, ale and stock. Bring to a simmer, then cover with a lid and gently simmer for 1 hr. When cooked, season, add the remaining butter and pour into an ovenproof serving dish. 5. Brush the edge of the dish with the beaten egg. Roll out the pastry using a little flour as possible and place over the dish. Pinch the edges of the dish so that the pastry will stick to it and trim off any remaining pieces of pastry from around the edge. Brush the pastry top thoroughly with the remaining beaten egg and place on a baking tray. 6. Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes until the pastry is golden brown.

WINE MATCH For a classic meal like Steak & Ale Pie with its rich and full flavours try an equally powerful and full-bodied wine such as Australian Shiraz or California Cabernet Sauvignon. These have pronounced body and structure so they won’t feel dull next to the richness of the pie and their earthy, spicy fruit flavours will also add a bit of a kick. While there´s no doubt a good ale (generally the same one you have used in the making of the pie) goes down well with this dish, as mushrooms are a central feature, a robust red Pinot Noir would also work incredibly well with these flavours.

DEATH ON THE NILE

AVRIL LAVIGNE – LOVE SUX

THE CHRISTIE AFFAIR

Four years on from the hit Hollywood film ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ comes this fantastic adaption of another Agatha Christie novel ‘Death on the Nile’. Kenneth Branagh reprises his role as Belgian super sleuth Hercule Poirot and ‘Wonderwoman’ actress Gal Gadot features as the beautiful bride potentially hiding a dark secret. The film, by 20th Century Studios, is set in the scenic location of Egypt also stars a cast of iconic and rising stars; any of whom could be playing the murderer. ‘American Beauty’ actress Annette Benning is teased in the film’s posters as ‘The Mother’ who is gripping a martini in a threatening pose while Letitia Wright, who stars in the ‘Black Panther’ franchise is portrayed as ‘The Manager’ and newcomer Emma Mackay is ‘The Lover’. Originally filmed in 2019 but delayed dure to Covid, ‘Death on the Nile’ is written by Michael Green, produced by Ridley Scott and adapted from Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name. It’s a classic ‘Who done it film?’ full of mystery and intrigue. The costumes scream glamour and the cinematography is stunning. ‘Death on the Nile’ is scheduled to be released nationwide in cinemas from February 11th. Definitely worth a watch if murder/mystery films are your thing. Reviewers and critics are giving it the thumbs up.

Canadian punk rock songstress Avril Lavigne is releasing her seventh studio album this month and promises it will “return pop-punk music to the mainstream.” Arriving on February 25th via Travis Barker’s DTA records, ‘Love Sux’ will feature her latest single ‘Bite Me’ as well as three collaborations with the likes of; Machine Gun Kelly, Blackbear and Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus. She shared the news of the album via her social media last month with news of the track ‘Love it when you hate me’ (the Blackbear collab) saying: “I was just like, Let’s make a pop-punk record. We used live guitars and live drums and didn’t hold back, I just got to do exactly what I wanted and what I feel like I’ve probably wanted to do for a long time.” Lavigne’s last album before ‘Love Sux’ was released in 2019 which launched to critical acclaim. This new drop is going back to her roots with “pure rock and roll from front to back.” It marks 20 years of being in the mainstream music industry for Avril who first burst onto our screens aged 16 in 2002 with her debut album ‘Let Go’ featuring the catchy hit-making singles ‘Complicated’ and ‘Sk8er Boi.’ During the height of her fame, she was nominated for 8 Grammy Awards in 2 years and to date has won a total of 169 awards, selling more than 30 million singles and 40 million albums. ‘Love Sux’ is touted as being another bestseller for the punk rock princess who has also announced a UK and European tour, starting this month on February 26th in the Netherlands with three London dates on March 27th, 28th and 29th.

Nina de Gramont’s ‘The Christie Affair’ is a beguiling novel of star-crossed lovers, heartbreak, revenge and murder with a brilliant reimagination of one of the most talked-about unsolved mysteries of the twentieth century. The book has a teaser of...”Every story has its secrets. Every mystery has its motives.” The book is set in London in 1925, in a world of townhouses and tennis matches, socialites and shooting parties, Miss Nan O’Dea became Archie Christie’s mistress, luring him away from his devoted and wellknown wife, Agatha Christie. The question is, why? Why destroy another woman’s marriage, why hatch a plot years in the making, and why murder? How was Nan O’Dea so intricately tied to those eleven mysterious days that Agatha Christie went missing? “A long time ago, in another country, I nearly killed a woman. It’s a particular feeling, the urge to murder. It takes over your body so completely, it’s like a divine force, grabbing hold of your will, your limbs, your psyche. There’s a joy to it. In retrospect, it’s frightening, but I daresay in the moment it feels sweet. The way justice feels sweet,” the novel divulges. The greatest mystery wasn’t Agatha Christie’s disappearance in those eleven infamous days, it’s what she discovered. This book with a Good Reads guide of 3.85 and described as an “absolute marvel“ is sure to both entertain and enthral readers when it is released on February 1st.

Anne-Marie A

nne-Marie is one of Britain’s most popular solo artists. Her latest album ‘Speak Your Mind’ has just surpassed 4.5 billion streams on Spotify making it the 10th most streamed album by a female artist on the platform’s history. With a soon-to-be, sell-out UK, European and US tour starting this month and culminating with the FM4 Frequency Festival in August, Anne-Marie is one of the most popular British female solo singing exports. Everyone knows and loves her music. From when she burst onto the UK charts back in 2016 with her stunning vocals on Clean Bandit’s number one hit song ‘Rockabye’ - Anne-Marie has gone from strength-tostrength including a judging spot on ‘The Voice UK’, killer album launches and 12 music industry awards.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Anne-Marie was born and raised in East Tilbury, Essex. Her father was a builder and handyman while her mother was a teacher. With her hugely talented vocal ability she was picked to star in West End productions including ‘Les Miserables’ aged six and ‘Whistle Down The Wind’ aged 12, alongside fellow Brit pop star Jessie J. She first cut a solo demo for Rocket Records in 2013

and was even picked by the hugely successful band Rudimental to feature on four of their tracks on their ‘We Are The Generation’ album. However, her huge break came with Clean Bandit single ‘Rockabye’ (also featuring rapper Sean Paul) which firmly put Anne-Marie on the map when it stayed in the Charts at Number One for 9 weeks in 2016, including the coveted Christmas Number One spot. Following on from this, Anne-Marie released album ‘Therapy’ which made it double platinum in 2021 and hit singles including ‘Way Too Long’ with Nathan Dawe, ‘Kiss My’ with Little Mix and ‘Our Song’ with Niall Horan have proved Anne-Marie is a British music entrepreneur that can work with anyone in the industry. Turning 30 in April last year was a pivotal moment for the star. Having achieved her musical goals with her 5 years of successful album releases, made her reassess her life. She was quoted as saying about her big 30th birthday: “Leading up to it, I felt like I was changing and caring a little less about what people thought about me – and removing that from my life was really nice.

Each piece was designed by the singer to be “worn your way – as a statement of your individuality and an extension of your own personal style,” according to the singer. The collection is packed full of faux fur, bold prints and playful silhouettes with pink as the main colourway. It’s an uplifting collection that brims with colour. THE KEY TO UNLOCKIN With Valentine’s Day just round the corner we thought we’d put trivial gifts and naff cards to one side and concentrate on the real crux of the matter… what makes a relationship work? With divorce rates sky rocketing to near the 50% mark we spoke to couples that have stood the test of time and questioned what really makes love last?

FRIENDSHIP IS AS IMPORTANT AS LOVE When asked the question: “What’s the secret to a long, happy marriage?” a common answer from people in long marriages was: “I married my best friend.” Similarly, from those whose marriages did not succeed, you all too often hear: “Well, we were good at love, but we never learned how to be friends.” You have to be friends and share common interests. Whether that is something as trivial as both sharing hobbies or having the same sense of humour, when looks start to fade it’s the true friendship union you have that will make you last. James Hall, a 54-year-old investment banker said, “The secret to my successful 20-year long marriage is I married my best friend. After a string of frivolous relationships with model types, who to be honest never stimulated me intellectually, I met my wife who was a partner in a law firm, she had a cracking sense of humour and the guttsiest personality and we just clicked and became friends. After 6 months she was transferred to the States for work that I just knew I had to have her by my side. To cut a long story short after a flight out and romantic proposal – she felt the same, said “yes” and we have never looked back.

SHARE SIMILAR CORE VALUES Opposites may attract, but they don’t always make for great and lasting marriages. You are much more likely to have a satisfying companionship for life when you and your partner are fundamentally similar. And the most important thing to look for is similarity in your core values. Take Emma Sylvester, who at 87 has been married for 58 years. As she put it with a smile, “It’s quite an achievement.” “I didn’t know it when I got married, but in retrospect I know it’s important to have the same basic values. In other words, if you’re a free spender, marry somebody who understands that. If you’re frugal, you need to marry somebody who understands

FEATURES that, because money is one of the stumbling blocks in marriages. And fortunately me and my husband had the same values on most things. Because of this, we really didn’t argue. And we really didn’t agonise over things. We came to our decisions by just realising that we had usually the same goals. We both believed in education. We wanted to be moral according to society’s standards, to raise our children to be good citizens, and to be responsible in terms of finances.” As boring as it may sound - it is these basic yet solid foundations that will help you achieve long lasting love.

LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE According to royal biographer Ingrid Seward the key to a long-lasting relationship is laughter. The Queen and Prince Philip, had one of the most successful marriages lasting 74 years before Philip’s death last year. “They had a great relationship and they laughed all the time together,” Seward was quoted as saying. Apparently the Queen is an excellent comic and despite her incredibly OTT posh accent can put on a fantastic Liverpudlian, Irish and American accent. “I think the secret is they laughed together, we all know that life is very, very difficult but to see the funny side sometimes - a shared sense of humour can go a long way,” Seward said. Halle Simpson, a mum of two said about her 15-year relationship, “We just enjoy each other’s company. We’re playful and tease each other in a light-hearted way. Life can be so hard and finding ways to make each other smile seems to be the antidote for us.” Psychologists agree too. There have been many studies on couples that share laughter having a more solid union than those that have a more ‘serious relationship’ without humour.

KNOW WHEN TO LEAVE ARGUMENTS It is important to know when to leave an argument or how to settle disputes peacefully. Invariably if you spend that much time with one other person, tensions are going to brew from time to time. Apologise, forgive and make up with each other. If you threaten to break up with each other after every fight or argument, you will never really resolve anything. Caitlin Moore, 42, who has been married for 11 years put it simply: “Take breaking up off the table,” she said. “Talk through disagreements as long or as many times as it takes until the issue is resolved and both of you feel comfortable moving forward. “Sometimes me and my partner find it easier to leave an argument rather than fight it if we know there is no winning solution. I was committed to my partner Tom being my life partner

38 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 06

and when we both realised this and took the “I’m going to leave you card” off the table we learned to back down in arguments that although seemed important at the time - we knew were not make or break.” A good tip to cooling off arguments is to talk about the good with the bad. Start off by saying how much you love the person and how committed you are to making the relationship work. Then go into your complaint, if you have one. It will make your partner less defensive. Also learn to leave arguments – sometimes who was right or wrong in a situation is unimportant. Just get on with your life and your day-to-day living and loving.

ESTABLISH TRUST AND LOYALTY You can’t have a relationship without trust. Trust is founded not just in loyalty to that person but respect towards them. Be able to trust each other in everything, keeping private your partner’s

innermost secrets, fears and struggles. You can also help your partner overcome them. When you say you’ll do something, follow through. Keep your word. Realise that fulfilling simple, basic commitments every day lays the foundation of trust that extends to more challenging situations. “My partner had trust issues from a previous relationship where her boyfriend had cheated on her,” Mike says. “It took time for her to build trust in me and our relationship because of this. I found that by proving to her that I was loyal and trustworthy by keeping a personal secret of hers, keeping appointments and sticking to my word, she learned to trust me.” As hard as it may be try and leave any emotional baggage from one relationship when moving onto another. Loyalty and trust is a definite key to a successful union.

KEEP THE ROMANCE ALIVE When you have been in a relationship for a while, romance does tend to go out the window to make way for everyday life; time for careers, juggling kids, finances etc. But it is really important to make time for that special someone in your life.

This doesn’t have to be expensive gifts or over the top romantic gestures – just try to keep that glimmer of romance you had in the start alight. Once a month, get a babysitter go out for dinner and try to make that extra time for each other. Most people don’t try romantic activities because they simply don’t know how. Here’s a hint: there are no secrets to romance. Most of the time, everything we need to know is right under our noses. Maria, a busy mum of three, thought the romance had gone from her relationship when her husband came home without the kids from school one day. ”Urm, where are the kids Paul?” I said. “They’re at my mothers,” he replied. “I have booked us a trip to Paris for the weekend.” I literally couldn’t believe it and the trip from start to finish was magical taking in the sights, going out for dinner at lovely restaurants. It was just what I needed and definitely injected that much needed spark and spontaneity into our married life.” While Paris doesn’t have to be on the cards, a bit of thought and planning and a romantic gesture every so often does go a hell of a long way.

ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER Spend time apart from your partner. It will help your relationship to grow by not crowding each other and give you the much needed opportunity to miss each other so when you are together you can say how you’ve truly missed that person. It doesn’t have to be weeks on end (although that works fine too) it can just be a day, night or weekend away with friends. Amber Collier, a 28-year-old PR executive says she makes sure she goes for regular weekends away with the girls and it has really helped her have a stronger and healthier relationship with her partner Jack.

“Jack really misses me when I’m away and we have a great time ‘catching up’ when I’m back,” she laughs. “I really believe it is important to not neglect your friends. A lot of people enter relationships and dump their friends. Don’t forsake your friends; they’ll help you discover yourself and stay grounded while you’re in the relationship,” Amber says. “Besides who wants to live in the pocket of your other half 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you don’t have the chance to develop your own friendships and the joys you get out of having these relationships makes you a better person to be around.” Amber and Jack are due to get married in May. Amber is going on a hen weekend and a week long holiday with her old school friends. We spoke to Jack about whether her absence makes his heart grow fonder. “I don’t like her going away but I really miss her when she’s gone and we have a great time catching up when she’s back. So yes I agree - absence does make the heart grow fonder.”

40 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 06

SEE YOUR FAMILY AS ONE You can’t choose your partner’s family and we all know in-laws can be hard to deal with, but if you want to have a good relationship with your partner it is important to learn to get on with them. Katie Simpson, a relationship psychologist, says: “Don’t try to find fault. We’re eager to dismiss the blemishes of our own parents but point out the blemishes of our partners. Try to break this cycle. Give both sets of parents the benefit of the doubt before you judge them. “Seeing your combined family as one, whether you’re married or not can really help overcome this. Try to find the good in them (and in everyone for that matter) and you will find your life and relationships a lot easier to deal with,” she advises. Besides if a wedding or long term partnership is on the cards you will have to spend more time with these people, so you might as well make sure you’re having fun whilst doing so.

HOW TO LIG H

Sadie Pizzey Sadie Pizzey Interiors is a full-service design firm based in Guildford. SP Interiors works on both residential and commercial projects and has recently been shortlisted for The International Design and Architecture Awards. Sadie designs with practical knowledge gained from extensive renovation experience. Her exceptional organisation and project management skills mean she keeps projects running to time and budget, developing innovative schemes and beautiful spaces to inspire clients. Sadie’s philosophy is: “We need our homes to be our battery chargers, to help us re-build and recover from everything that life throws at us. Designing spaces that embrace this, will dramatically improve our quality of life”. www.sadiepizzeyinteriors.com

ow to light your home? Is an area I am regularly quizzed on by potential clients, friends and family members. Lighting is such an important factor in interior design. I would even go as far as saying it is one of the most important elements in residential or commercial design. The funny thing about lighting a space, is it isn’t something you necessarily walk into a room and notice. Unless there is a particularly beautiful light or shade used. However, when you walk into a space, you instantly make a decision about how it impacts you. Without even realising it, lighting plays a huge part on that impact.

FLAT LIGHTING If I walk into a space and it feels flat and uninspiring. It is often because there is either not enough variety of light sources or there is too much of one type. For example (and I am going to be honest here), in my own home in the majority of the rooms I used multifaceted lighting options, on different circuits and all with dimmers.

HOME & INTERIORS

GHT YOUR HOME When it came to our hallway, I rushed it and tried to reduce our budget and used only down lighters to light the space. The result is a flat, bland entrance hall. I have tried to rectify it by adding floor and table lamps but I know at some point I will want to rip the whole lot out and start again!

DIMENSIONAL LIGHTING The contrast to that mistake, is when I walk into other rooms in my home where I have layered the lighting and created different set ups for different moods, the rooms are dynamic and intriguing. I have used the lighting to highlight different elements in the space. This adds depth and contrast. By designing them on different circuits, I can adjust the mood of the room as we move through the day and night. To achieve good interior lighting in our homes, we need to understand the types of lighting that can be used. Comprehend how to layer them to create a warm, dimensional space.

TWO TYPES OF LIGHT Firstly, it is important to note that there are two types of light when it comes to interiors; natural and artificial. Natural light obviously varies in a space due to orientation, window sizes and where in the world we live. To enhance or adjust the natural light we get in each space, we add artificial lighting. This is used to add layers and dimension to a room.

FIVE LAYERS FOR ARTIFICIAL LIGHT When it comes to lighting our spaces artificially, there are actually five different types of lighting. These should be used in conjunction with each other in order to create dimensional, intriguing interiors.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 06

HOME & INTERIORS

GENERAL LIGHTING General lighting is exactly what it says, it is the wash of lighting that is used to light the entire space. It doesn’t focus the light on any one element or area of the space. The most common example is the single, central pendant, which is usually used in a bedroom or reception room. The other type (and one I mentioned earlier) is the very popular down lighter. Now there is nothing wrong with this light source and actually it is very useful. I use down lighters in my designs all the time. The new LED’s are now designed to camouflage into the ceiling. When used correctly they add a much-needed light

source. As I mentioned earlier, however, when they are used on their own and over used they create a very flat, often over bright light source, which is unflattering and harsh in a space. Positioning them correctly for the usage of the room and always on a dimmer, allows them to play their part beautifully in a space.

TASK LIGHTING Task Lighting is essential in a space as it is incredibly useful in our daily lives. It basically does what it says on the tin. It provides extra light sources in area where we concentrate particular tasks. For example, in a kitchen you will often see under cabinet lighting. This creates a lovely glow on the worktops but it also highlights areas where food prep is happening. The same in studies and work stations. Positionable desk lamps or floor lamps are a popular choice for adding an extra brightness to focus on our work.

AMBIENT LIGHTING Ambient lighting is general lightings thoughtful friend. Whilst general lighting allows you to quickly wash a whole space in light. Ambient softens the space, creating a more tranquil, relaxed atmosphere. A good example of ambient lighting is the beautiful chandelier or ceiling pendant that captures your eye and dances the light around the space. I will tell you a funny antidote; when I use to find decorative ceiling pendants, my dad would never let me buy them because the lumens capacity (how bright the light could be) was never very bright. Only years later did I realise that they were designed that way for a reason. They were never meant to be the sole light source for a space

HOME & INTERIORS

and were designed to create a soft, flattering light. Just think of all those chandeliers I could have bought, if I’d realised earlier.

MOOD LIGHTING Mood lighting is really important for adjusting your space from the brighter, necessary daily functional lighting to the calmer, softer, relaxing lighting. The common choices for this lighting is table and floor lights. When I design living rooms and TV rooms, I usually stipulate plenty of outputs for table and floor lamps. I also insist on 5 amp sockets, allowing each lamp to be connected to the wall switch. The majority of us are never going to go round each room turning on different light options. When it’s controllable from the main switch it makes the zoning so much easier to control.

ACCENT LIGHTING Accent lighting is actually one of my favourite light sources to design in a space. It allows you to highlight a particular area, element or object in a room. For those of you who have followed my own walk-in wardrobe renovation (follow us on Instagram to see behind the scenes), will know that a very important element of that design was the hidden led strips that I designed to

highlight my shoe cabinet. The lighting not only accented my favourite stilettos but also highlighted the beautiful rose gold leaf used behind the shoes. The lighting design for that space is a combination of down lighters and softer LED strips. If I turn the down lighters on without the LED strips the room is flat and dull. As soon as I light the LED’s, the room is powerful and impactful. Shoes aside (although as you can see it is one of my favourite topics!), bookcases and art is another area I like to use accent lighting. By highlighting this area in your space, they bring them to life and make them stand out in your home. Another of my recommendations would be to use a home automation company to integrate all your lighting, zones and different moods onto one system. We work closely with an automation company who can automate literally everything in your home. From lighting to cinemas, to controlling your curtains and blinds. If you would like our help with lighting your home or any other aspect of designing your interior project, then don’t hesitate to get in touch and book a discovery call with us.

ART FOR

ART’S SAKE JACKSON POLLOCK

O

ne of the most famous abstract expressionist artists of all time, US artist Jackson Pollock was famous for his unique style of drip painting. Born in 1912, Jackson enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety before his death in a car accident in 1956. He was noted to suffer from alcoholism. Four months after his death, Pollock was given a memorial retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. A larger, more comprehensive exhibition of his work was held there in 1967. In 1998 and 1999, his work was honoured with large-scale retrospective exhibitions at MoMA and at The Tate in London.

DRIP PERIOD Pollock’s most famous paintings were made during the Drip Period between 1947 and 1950. He rocketed to fame following a 1949 four-page spread in Life magazine that asked, “Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?” At the peak of his fame, Pollock who most say actually invented the drop style abruptly abandoned the technique to move onto monochrome pourings.

HOME & INTERIORS BLACK POURINGS Pollock’s work after 1951 was darker in colour, including a collection painted in black and white. These paintings have been referred to as his Black Pourings and when he exhibited them at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York none of them sold. The departure from his earlier style wasn’t what his collectors wanted. These works show Pollock attempting to find a balance between abstraction and depictions of the figure.

FIGURATIVE PAINTINGS He later returned to using colour and continued with figurative elements. During this period, Pollock had moved to the Sidney Janis Gallery a more commercial gallery; the demand for his work from collectors

was great. An alcoholic from an early age it is believed this pressure and demand for his work deepened his dependency. His untimely death in 1956 was due to a car accident whilst he was under the influence.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

NAVA THAI N

ava Thai serves the best, most authentic Thai Cuisine using only the finest, freshest local ingredients. Based in Ashtead High Street, Nava Thai, is owned and run by lifelong Thai friends and business partners Saitarn and Nawarat. They saw a gap in the Surrey market for a traditional Thai takeaway that serves the best Asian dishes as well as a modern twist on classic dishes. Nava Thai first opened in 2020 at the start of lockdown and despite the pandemic managed to forge a highly successful business with hundreds of regulars and fans. You only have to take a look at their 54 Google Reviews page to see the inroads they have made in under 2 years. Before Nava Thai came along there was only 2 other Thai restaurants worth visiting in the area. Now there is only one – Nava Thai!

OUR EXPERIENCE Our first time at Nava Thai was amazing. We asked for the most popular 4 main dishes and a selection of starters and were

82 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 06

pleasantly surprised with the selection – it was a smorgasbord of food plentiful to feed the 4 guests we had. The Starters consisted of Chicken Satay, Si Kong Moo Yang (pork ribs marinated in a homemade sauce) and Tempura Prawn with a Sweet Chilli Dip. All three were sublime. The crispiness of the Tempura was incredible seeing as though it was a takeaway dish and had

RESTAURANT REVIEW

been sealed for 15 minutes before delivery. The Ribs literally fell off the bone because the meat was so succulent and tender and the sauce was sweet with a hint of spice. The Satay consisted of three skewers of marinated chicken and peanut sauce to die for! For Mains we were presented with the Nava Crispy Chicken Cashew which was stir fried chicken with cashew nuts, peppers, onions and chilli – flavoursome yet incredibly healthy as only a light sauce to accompany. Next up was the Pad Preaw Wan which comes in 3 options of Chicken, Prawn or Veg and Tofu – we had the Prawn which was so delicious and the sweet and sour sauce was perfect – not too sickly sweet as we’ve experienced with Asian cuisine. The Honey Chicken and Garlic Pepper Duck were also favourites – well presented meat dishes with amazing flavours and large portion sizes meant all 4 guests were able to have 3 or more large slices of meat with more still to go round. We had a Khao New (or sticky rice) and a Pad Thai to accompany and it easily went round our diners – with some left for the next day. Not a lot though! And what’s more as well as being the best Thai we have had so far in Surrey - the entire bill was under £65. That is incredible value especially for the quality of the dishes we had. We were so impressed with Nava Thai that we have been back 8 times since. And guess what, we can’t wait to go back again!

IN SUMMARY Nava Thai is open for lunch (12pm – 3pm) and dinner (5pm - 9pm on weekdays & Sundays or 5pm - 9.30pm on Friday and Saturday), for takeaway or collection every day, except Monday when they are closed. This gem of a restaurant/takeaway ticks all the boxes for taste, quality, service and price. Highly recommended, it’s worth the drive if outside of your collection area. Now available on Deliveroo too.

to my heart This month, I was thrilled to be working with a company called Desenio. If you haven’t come across them, they are a super fashionable print and frame company with a large selection of the most beautiful prints at very reasonable prices. I decided to combine some black and white family photos with some monochrome prints and I am really happy with how it looks. The children are especially excited when they walk past and see pictures of themselves in a frame. On a freezing cold January morning we headed into the gardens of Chai Banstead and into an igloo. Needless to say, the kids were rather excited, as were we because it meant that they didn’t disturb the other diners and we got to eat a meal in peace! The igloos are furnished with sheepskin throws, beautiful vintage floral arrangements and pretty fairy lights adorning the ceiling. For those of you that aren’t a fan of the cold, fear not, the heaters inside the igloo make for a really cosy ambience. The coffee is seriously good as are the freshly baked artisan cakes, it’s a must if you are in the area (igloo optional). Talking of al fresco dining, the Coppa Club Igloos in Cobham are also fun and they have my favourite pasta on the menu – you guessed it, truffle! They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Nobody does breakfast quite like The Ivy Cobham. It is my favourite place to meet friends for a catch up. Rather excitingly they have opened a new chain of Ivy’s known as Ivy Asia. My husband and I went on a date night to the St Paul’s location and nearly ordered the entire menu we were so excited. The lamb chops were sublime. The vivid green backlit gemstone floor also makes for a very Instagrammable spot. They are due to open one in Guildford in the Spring so keep your eyes peeled. Wondering what to do for Valentines Day this year? If like me you are not really into showing PDA’s (cringe!), the perfect answer is to cook something tasty at home. After all, there is no better way to the heart than through the stomach. I mean I wouldn’t say no to a bespoke floral arrangement from the very talented Vanilla Orchid Flowers (husband take note). February Tarot Reading

Let’s find out what February will bring for you! Tarot and Astrology

Before we get into the reading, tarot and astrology are two subjects that go hand in hand and knowing more about astrology helps to understand your tarot reading even more. For example, each tarot card symbolises a different element, just like each zodiac sign. Cups represent Water (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces), Wands represent Fire (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius), Pentacles represent Earth (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), and Swords represent Air (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius). Therefore, before even starting this reading, we can tell by looking at the cards above that Water energy is strong this month with the majority of cards being Cups.

Ace of Cups

Your main card for this month’s reading is the Ace of Cups. This card is a beautiful one to get, as it shows that love is in the air! If you are already in a relationship, expect February to bring lots of romance and embrace Valentine’s Day with all your heart. If you are single, a new relationship may be just around the corner… Emotionally, lead with compassion and if an issue comes up at work or in the household, understand that whoever it is that’s causing any problems is probably going through something themselves. Lastly, use your creativity to its fullest potential this month and get artistic.

The World

The World is all about completion and coming to an end of a chapter of your life. You may find yourself trying to hold on to your past, but this card shows that moving on is in your best interest. Be proud of your accomplishments and only look back to appreciate how far you’ve come. The Ace of Cups and The World cards together are telling you to explore your deepest desires and understand what they really mean to you. These cards together are a clear sign that you are heading straight towards your goals, and nothing is going to stop you!

Five of Cups

Your final card for February is the Five of Cups. This card is usually a sign of regret. You may feel as if you have failed something or someone recently and are disappointed with your actions. However, don’t let your pessimistic side get the best of you! Receiving the Five of Cups with the Ace of Cups and The World, shows that whatever the issue is, it won’t make a big impact on your life. With two Cups cards, your emotions are running high at the moment, so try not to let your heart get too wounded. All three cards in this reading are feminine, therefore embrace your feminine energy and do things that spark your creativity. By Pia Louisa

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

24 AUG – SEPT 3

The start of the month puts you in a goal-getting mood as the new Moon on the 1st speaks of the connections that can help you turn that dream into something real. This Valentine’s month is no time to be staying home with that boxset. Mid-month puts you in a position to impress and capture hearts and minds while advancing your own agenda. But in the nicest possible way of course. If you’ve no boo this V-Day month, then don’t see those friends as second best. The fact is, it’s all love. Between now and May, Pay it Forward synchronicities and rewards for past good karma could catch up with you in surprising ways. Perhaps not through those you helped in this lifetime but via those from past ones. Look to your circle and connections this month. Whoever is helping you or holding that door open is simply paying you back for what you did for them – once upon a lifetime.

What’s been your investment these past few years, Taurus? I’m not just talking about where you stash your cash either. Although this may play a role. I’m talking about your investment in your thoughts, people, those you love and what you love to do. It’s all coming full circle now and showing you whether or not it was worth all that time, resources and TLC. Or not as the case may be. Are you cashed up with emotional satisfaction or alternatively, need to cash in? You should be receiving clear credit or debit statements from the universe this month, so read carefully and act accordingly. If you are in the fortunate position of seeing abundance flow your way, your future investment should lie in the direction of what means freedom for you. Money if you have extra, needs to buy you experiences. After the 18th, focus on how what you have can hand you exactly yet. And yes, you are worth your own investment, Taurus.

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new deal and a new life for you, Gemini. Hopefully this month sees you feeling good. What’s that shift, compromise or trade off you need to make to get what it is you need? Look closely at this as bargains can be struck and deals can be done as Ceres arrives in your sign. The start of the month has you reaching for something wilder and wider to expand your world. And a way to get it or experience it. Just remember, despite what you’ve been told, nobody gets to ‘Have it all’. There has to be a trade-off somewhere. But if you are prepared to make it then you get what you need – which is better than ‘it all’ every time. From the final week of the month you are in a prime position to make inroads into those career ambitions. Don’t be afraid to take a leadership position – or more responsibility if this is handed to you. Others are watching your performance. Make it an Oscar-winning one and prepare to accept that award.

Change is like a wave. You need to be ready to catch that perfect break. Get ready to surf it in towards Empowerment Beach at the top of this month, Cancer. Sure, it may look scary but hanging 10 sees you waxed up and in a peak position to direct that future especially when it comes to income, assets or even shifts around a key connection. You could be one of the most lucky in love signs this V-Day month thanks to a key alignment between Venus and Mars mid-month. Serving true love and passion in equal measures. If something is stagnant, stale or simply not evolving our soul, expect that soul surfing opportunity to catch a very different kind of wave of change from the 18th. Someone or something is about to wash you up on a very different shore. It’s called a ‘break’ because it’s an opportunity. Don’t miss it.

Duets, double acts, duos and even duels feature this month, Leo. New beginnings around partnerships are promised by the new Moon at the start of February. Is there someone you have in mind to aim that V-Day arrow at? Remember, partnerships encompass so many dynamics. Not just the romantic kind. One particular person or relationship may feature right up until the 16th. Does it flow or has progress stalled indefinitely? Are you loved-up or lacklustre? If something has turned into hard work you’re not likely to continue investing after the 18th. While others could be transported into a fresh dimension when it comes to that opposite number. Here’s the secret to keeping that flame burning, Leo. Respect for your partner and them respecting you in turn. If that’s missing, your self-respect says you can’t fake it. So, fan it or simply put it out now.

The sign most likely to see a slew of cards and love declarations this V-Day month? That would be you, Virgo. If love is your goal or intention, then please go seek it or ways to express it even if it’s not via a romantic outlet. You are in a position to attract. But this all rests on how you work what you have. And also in giving yourself permission to be yourself free and unafraid of what others may think. Don’t however neglect those responsibilities as you head out in search of hedonism and romance. If you do, you’ll be tripped up later and have a time consuming mess to clear up. Mid month sees your intuition or suspicions confirmed. I hate to say ‘I told you so’. So pay attention. If you have to put in boundaries or let someone know they have crossed that line, what follows is either a solution or freedom, Virgo that sends you in the direction of real love.

Roar at the start of the month, Libra and have a very clear idea of what you want. That wishlist, vision board or goals need to be updated or refined now and you need to stick to those details and specifics. Sure, know where there is wiggle room to make that deal. But also where to stick to that criteria if it means selling out or settling for what you know in your soul simply isn’t right. This goes for work as well as romance, Libra. Standing for nothing means you fall for everything to preface Katy Perry. And sorry, ‘everything’ doesn’t cut it. You need what’s right and perfect for you right now. And with an eye to the future. Shifts around home or how you work will be in your favour now so add any changes that need to be made around these onto that manifestation list. From now until May you are the magician of everyday, practical magic. From May onwards – that magician for love, Libra. Just one more reason not to compromise if it’s not right.

Money, assets, investments – and that includes the emotional kind as in where you bank your love, feature this month. What’s paying out big in interest or bumping you up that rich feeling list for you? This also touches on money or other material assets you share with a partner – your joint home, income, bank account, tax break, mortgage, loan etc. Decisions around your money will feature so attend to business. Any issues you have around money demand that you own them now and don’t shove them aside like that unopened bank statement or bill. Also, take this all as a benchmark on how love worthy you are feeling this V-Day month. From the 18th you will more than make up any deficit if you feel you’re been short-changed in that department. But it all begins with your own self-belief in your ability to receive, attract and have more. Money and love are opposite sides of the same coin. Get minted.

V-Day month marks Love Reborn for you, Sag. Or a new deal on an existing one. You may be seeking something very different in terms of what you want or need in a partner now. This is all stemming from a fresh awareness of what makes you tick. A fellow free-spirit to run with perhaps? More freeing, breathtaking and boundless. This month’s full Moon says Don’t fence me in but you are welcome to join my journey. Home and what sustains you will continue to be in focus for you between now and May thanks to ruler Jupiter in this sector of your chart. The Sun in here from the 18th points on room to grow or grow your experiences. Jupiter always wants to hand you benefits or big a key area up for you. In this instance, your living space or arrangements. Any move you make now with regards to expansion also opens up that door for love or the love you need to move right on in too. Clear the space for its arrival.

After months of simply spinning those wheels or feeling the universe placed you on ‘Hold’, February hands you a green light to go for it. But whatever ‘it’ or should I say who?, that is, you have to really, really feel that desire. And also no half measures either. Do or do not, there is no try says Master Yoda acting as Cupid for you. This doesn’t just apply to those romantic endeavours but anything you truly want to have or create in your life. Your call to action begins at the start of the month and carries you forward with a wave of fresh ideas which demand you do something with them. News, what you share or send out, the internet, writing, speaking, design, photography, that social media feed – how you attract what you want in especially from the 18th when the Sun joins Jupiter and Neptune in your communication zone. Craft that message – whether it’s to that Valentine or to anyone else, and then release it. What you say, send or share has wings.

The new Moon in your sign on the 1st tells you its time for a relaunch or to set yourself new goals for your upcoming cycle. Look to who this may include and also at feedback you receive around the 16th. Above all, consider the source if this isn’t what you expected or wanted to hear. Is this about you or is it really about someone else’s insecurities or limitations being projected your way? From the 18th, you’ll know for certain whether it was warranted, helpful, loving or simply the reverse. And move on accordingly. The Sun in your money zone shines on opportunities to boost that self and your actual worth. Time to make a statement when it comes to those expectations. And to set any money making ideas in motion. This year should see that bank account benefit as well as your experience of what ‘feeling rich’ is. That just may include those things money can’t buy just as easily as it can the stuff it does. Including choices. Watch as choices you didn’t even know were options make themselves known.

Happy birthday, Pisces. Before the Sun sets your sign alight from the 18th go deep into what it is you know you need now. And what you don’t. This year isn’t about settling for so-so. It’s about something bigger, freer and more satisfying. The thing is: Will you allow yourself to have that? Or do you need to let something go in order to make room for it? Take time with this during the first part of the month and above all, don’t ignore what your intuition is telling you. This year promises to be one like no other you have experienced to date – or will again thanks to the presence of both your rulers in your sign. How it delivers on this is truly up to you and your willingness to enter unknown territory. Between now and May dare to venture out into areas you may have hesitated from exploring before. This isn’t a time for you to hold back or stick with what may be familiar but dull simply because you are afraid. Feel that fear and fly anyway. Especially towards love, Pisces.

John Altman is best known for playing Dot Cotton’s son ‘Nasty Nick’ in EastEnders from the soap’s debut in 1985 till his onscreen death in 2015. Despite being most well-known for acting (also starring in 1979 hit ‘Quadrophenia’) Surrey resident John has always had a passion for music appearing in various musicals being the frontman for The Heavy Metal Kids. He has just released a 12-track self-penned album called “Never Too Late to Rock and Roll” and is in the process of setting up a new band.

JOHN ALTMAN HOW IS THE NEW ALBUM BEING RECEIVED? Very well actually – a couple of really good reviews. People are enjoying the eclectic mix of songs on the album and are pleasantly surprised - which is pleasing! HOW MUCH INVOLVEMENT DID YOU HAVE IN CREATING THE ALBUM MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY? I wrote all the lyrics, some of the music and did the percussion on a few tracks like ‘Hallucinating You’ and ‘Eyes to Blue’. ARE THERE ARE PLANS TO TOUR AND GIG AGAIN SOON? Yeah definitely, I did a few gigs this summer but now we’re putting a new band together and we’re going to start touring locally around Spring 2022. Charlie Chandler who has a guitar shop in Hampton Wick is in the band. He’s a fine musician and a great character. WHAT’S YOUR FUNNIEST TOURING/ GIGGING STORY? I was in a punk group and we performed at a private gig in Charlbury – ‘Castaway’ actress Amanda Donahue was our lead vocalist. Unfortunately my bass player found the wine cellar and got out of his brains that night! We played so loudly the cows in the neighbouring field stampeded and the police had to shut us down! DO YOU STILL GET SPOTTED IN THE STREET HAVING PLAYED ‘NASTY NICK’ FOR 20 YEARS – ARGUABLY THE LONGEST RUNNING VILLAIN IN A TV SOAP? Yes still - even though I’ve not been in the soap for 5 years! I don’t mind and just get on with it!

I played a nice character (that hadn’t murdered 4 people in EastEnders) more people might be coming up to me right now! WHAT WAS IT LIKE STARRING ALONGSIDE EASTENDERS GREATS LIKE DAME BARBARA WINDSOR, (YOUR ON-SCREEN ‘MA) JUNE BROWN AND MARTIN KEMP? Dame Barbara Windsor was a lovely soul – we became great friends and I got on really well with Scott her husband. I gave her a lovely hug last time I saw her. As we’re both Surrey residents June Brown and I got on from day one and I still speak to her as often as possible. Actually thanks for reminding me, I’m going to call her today! Martin’s a lovely man and Spandau Ballet are a class act. WHO WAS THE MOST FUN OF THE EASTENDERS CAST TO WORK WITH AND WHY? June was great fun – we had some heavy scenes but we always had a laugh. One time when we came to the end of a scene in the launderette we just carried on adlibbing! We improvised for an extra 3 minutes and the crew were looking baffled as the script had ended – eventually they called “cut!”. Gary Whelan was a good laugh too and we used to do a lot of onset pranks. One time he missed an Italian meal I cooked for him so I posted it to him in a jiffy bag. IF YOU HAD TO TAKE THREE THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Margot Robbie for company, The Beatles White album to listen to and The Complete Works of Charles Dickens to read.

WHO ARE YOUR 4 IDEAL DINNER PARTY GUESTS? Stephen Fry, Paul McCartney, David Attenborough and Euro News reporter Anelise Borges. BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN? Actor Ron Moody said, “If you love acting – just go for it.” I worked my way up from backstage to treading the boards after this single piece of simplistic advice. MOST EMBARRASSING ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE? Cherry red platform boots – I’ve given them away to a charity shop now though. WHAT ALL THE LADIES WANT TO KNOW, ARE YOU SINGLE? At present yes! WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A WOMAN? Blonde hair, blue eyes, adventurous, tidiness, femininity and a sense of humour please! WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP? A film director. I’ve directed short films but directing a feature length film is still something I’d want to do in the future. WORST HABIT? Impatience can’t queue! IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE? One that’s hunted or humiliated probably! But I love water so I’m going to choose a dolphin. FRIDAY NIGHT OUT OR SUNDAY DAY IN? Sunday chill in day for sure.

WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING A FAN HAS SAID TO YOU? Someone kept calling me Nick in the Post Office queue. When I said my name was John she said, “I know that Nick!” That made me laugh.

WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE? Someone very handsome, slim, dark hair and brown eyes (who loves music and movies!) Casting now… please get in touch!

WHAT´S THE BEST THING ABOUT SURREY? So many good restaurants, rivers, parks and stunning views. I recently discovered Leith Hill and love it there.

DO YOU FIND IT HARD (BEING A NICE GUY!) THAT PEOPLE STILL ASSOCIATE YOU WITH NASTY NICK COTTON? It’s an advantage actually because if

IF YOU COULD PERPETUATE A MYTH ABOUT YOUSELF WHAT WOULD IT BE? I was offered a knighthood but turned it down!

WORST THING? The Box junction on the one-way system in Kingston!! Apparently the council made over a million in fines last year.
