August is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the warm weather. Our What’s On guide features many outdoor fetes and shows as well as; open gardens, markets, children’s entertainment and family days out.

Our charity article this month is on ColaLife, a charity transporting vital medicine to Zambia in Coca-Cola crates filling the gaps between the bottles - ingenious! The Sussex link is the founder, Simon Berry OBE who lives locally in Coldwaltham.

WE’RE HIRING!

We are looking for keen, enthusiastic and reliable individuals to join our grape picking team. We have positions available in both our Kent vineyard (TN26 2BE) and Sussex vineyard (PO18 0LY) for £11 per hour. Harvest usually commences between late September and early October – weather dependent.

Duration: Approx. 12 working days over a 3-week period including weekends.

Working day: 8am – 5pm. Half hour lunch with morning break of 15 mins. Finish time may fluctuate.

We need to be able to communicate days of work sometimes at quite short notice, this is usually done by group email so use of mobile phone is essential.

Sussex Police Commissioner Katy Bourne has renewed the contract to support crime victims to Sussex charity Victim Support. The charity also covers specific provision for victims of hate crime, fraud and specialist support for children and young people.

A West Sussex firefighter team have completed the 100 miles South Downs Way by bike to raise more than £1,500 for the Fire Fighters Charity in memory of two former colleagues, Mark Butler and Simon Constable. You can donate at www.justgiving.com/sdw2023.

The Leader of West Sussex County Council, Cllr Paul Marshall, has joined other local government and construction industry leaders in calling on the government to review the introduction of a new infrastructure levy, which has been proposed in the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill. Cllr Marshall said: “The infrastructure levy is something I strongly oppose as the expected changes would mean that West Sussex County Council would no longer be a statutory consultee on future planning development in our county.”

Shoreham Harbour is set to benefit from a grant of £300,000 to support climate change and biodiversity projects as part of the Joint Area Action Plan (JAAP) for Shoreham Harbour. The aim of the JAAP is to transform Shoreham Harbour into a vibrant, thriving waterfront destination providing new homes and jobs and by consolidating port activities in the Eastern Harbour Arm to ensure the Shoreham Port continues to play a vital role in the local economy. The annual Exceptional People in Care (EPIC) awards celebrated the achievements of children and young people in care in West Sussex. The Low Carbon Across the South and East (LoCASE) programme has come to a close, having handed out £913,185 in grant funding to West Sussex businesses. Delivered in partnership with West Sussex County Council, LoCASE gave grants and support to help businesses become more energy efficient and lower their carbon footprint. 107 businesses - including here at Sussex Local - received grants, together investing a total of £2,694,464 in a range of energy efficiency upgrades, from LED floodlights to new energy-efficient kitchen equipment. An estimated 445 tonnes of carbon emissions will be saved as a result.

Local residents agree with Adur & Worthing Councils that proposed improvements by National Highways to the A27 between Worthing and Lancing will not address congestion issues in the area. The £20 million earmarked is far below the £320 million for the Arundel bypass, and public consultation showed over half of respondents felt the plans did not go far enough to reduce delays or improve reliability. The proposals included some road widening and changes to access points but with no funding yet for new cycling and pedestrian routes.

Friends, Families, and Travellers (FFT) is a national charity based in Sussex. They work to challenge discrimination, racism and inequality experienced by Gypsy, Roma, and Travelling people whilst helping people to understand their rights. Findon Valley resident Ross Lowndes was diagnosed with incurable blood cancer myeloma after going to the doctor for a nosebleed.

Myeloma kills 3,000 people in the UK each year. Ross had been experiencing worsening hip pain but it wasn't until he mentioned the nosebleed that the GP ordered blood tests revealing severe anemia.

Myeloma is frequently missed as its symptoms like back pain and broken bones seem minor. Myeloma UK estimates 851 people are living with undiagnosed myeloma in the UK. Ross is urging people to learn the symptoms and get tested to catch cases earlier when treatment can control the disease and extend life. Visit from Worthing’s Twin

The Worthing Twinning Association (WTA) recently hosted a return visit from members of its French partner town

d'Olonne. The group enjoyed tours to Lancing College chapel, lunch at Perch on the Pier, and a cream tea at the town hall with the mayor. More fun activities included playing shuffleboard and visits to Bosham, Chichester, Arundel and Brighton using the 700 bus. The successful trip concluded with a meal at Highdown restaurant. Their chairman extended an invitation for a return visit next year. Application for new bathing zones

Worthing Borough Council is applying to add two new designated bathing water zones at Beach House Grounds and Sea Lane, Goring. This allows water testing to identify pollution sources.

Last year's Beach House application was rejected for insufficient bather data. The council is now preparing new applications with user numbers and facility details before October, plus a public consultation, to improve coastal water quality checks.

National award for Head Teacher

Phillip Potter, Head Teacher of Oak Grove College in Worthing, has won a Silver Teaching Award from the Teaching Awards Trust in recognition of his outstanding work at the special needs school. He was one of just 5 national winners in the Special Educational Needs category. Phillip will now be considered for a Gold Award in November.

Children’s hospice grant funding slashed

Earlier this year, NHS England wrote to children’s hospices in England to let them know that the vital £25 million Children’s Hospice Grant will come to an end after this year (2023/24). New research from Together for Short Lives shows that without the continuation of the grant, 38% of children’s hospices in England would need to cut the end-of-life care they provide and 79% would be forced reduce respite breaks.

Anna Jones, Director of Children’s Services at Chestnut Tree House, joined representatives from children’s hospices across the country at Westminster to meet with MPs to discuss the Children’s Hospice Grant. Led by national charity Together for Short Lives, children’s hospices like Chestnut Tree House are calling on the Government and NHS England to ensure sustainable funding for the thousands of children and families who rely on them.

Disability Cricket comes to Storrington

New disability cricket club joins flourishing village teams

The England Cricket Board (ECB) has approved Storrington Cricket Club as only the third disability cricket club in West Sussex (along with Middleton and Eastergate).

The aim is to cater for a full range of physical and mental issues and to encompass all ages from kids to adults. Initially there will be outdoor sessions on a Friday evening at 6pm until September and these will run alongside the busy training sessions for the club’s many boys and girls teams.

Feather shedding & disappearing birds

their orange breast and brown back feathers, and later in the year will replace their wing feathers. Other birds, such as the migratory willow warbler, moult twice a year. Birds such as blue tits which only produce one brood a year, will begin their moult much earlier than those who have two broods a season.

Over the spring we have seen birds go about their busy lives: finding mates, building nests, laying eggs and rearing their young. But come August, you may notice there don’t seem to be so many birds around; you may also start seeing birds you don’t quite recognise!

The spring and early summer is a demanding and exhausting time for birds, not only have they been occupied with breeding and rearing chicks, some have also undertaken a colossal migratory journey. Feathers can become fragile, damaged and discoloured during this busy season, but as they are not capable of growth or renewal, they undergo a ‘moult’ – the replacement of feathers with new ones. Although this is something unique to birds, the process evolved among dinosaurs.

Along with breeding and migration, moulting is one of the most energy draining events in a bird’s life, so it needs to happen at the right time. By late summer their young have grown, the weather is warm and there is still plenty of food available; this is the ideal time to moult. Various other factors influence precisely when and how different species go through this process. This can be complex, and intwined with the overall life-cycle and environment of the species: age, sex, size, migration, breeding patterns, climate change, global warming may all play a part. Some birds partially moult - young robins for example moult their body feathers to produce

For many of our birds, it is a slow process, with each feather being replaced one-by-one. Most garden birds, for example, will spend 6 – 8 weeks undergoing a moult. The House Sparrow is one of slowest moulting species taking up to four months to complete the process. Migrant birds, on the other hand, will moult much quicker so they can begin their long journeys.

During this time you may see some rather scruffy looking birds with an array of mismatching feathers, and you may be thinking - ‘what is that bird? As they go through this process, they become less capable of flying hence more vulnerable to predators so it’s a good time to lie low and stay hidden under tree canopies and vegetation – and this is one of the reasons we may see less birds during August.

At Pagham Harbour and Medmerry during August, look out for ducks in their ‘eclipse’ plumage. Drakes moult before their female counterparts, losing their brightly coloured feathers and replacing them with the monochrome browns similar to the female – so for a while it may seem that there’s been a sudden spike of female ducks – in fact they are just the males in disguise!

The perils of speeding

Fines of up to £2,500 and instant bans can be levied

Getting caught speeding can lead to fines, penalty points, speed awareness courses or even driving bans depending on the severity of the offence. For minor offences, the police have 14 days to issue a Notice of Intended Prosecution.

Drivers may be offered a speed awareness course, which involves paying to attend a half-day session, instead of getting points on their licence. Whether this is offered depends on the police force.

More serious speeding offences over 10% plus 9mph of the speed limit rarely qualify for awareness courses. The minimum penalty is a £100 fine and 3-6 penalty points. Not responding to the police within 28 days can lead to the matter going to court. Very serious offences go straight to court, with fines up to £1,000 or £2,500 on

motorways. 12 points in 3 years leads to disqualification. Instant bans are only considered for significant speeding, like over 51mph in a 30 zone or 85mph in a 60 zone.

Bans range from 7-56 days but can be up to 120 days, after which driving tests may need to be retaken. Courts consider road conditions and consequences of lost licences. In summary, minor speeding may lead to awareness courses while serious speeding leads to large fines, points and potential driving bans. The courts do have some discretion around driving bans which could include factors such as if you were speeding for an emergency or if losing your licence could cost you your job.

Sheep fair disaster of 1908

The annual Sheep Fair on Nepcote Green in September 1908 went down in history as a night to be remembered when it ended in tragedy and was followed by an Inquiry conducted by the Deputy Coroner.

The calamity concerned William Warren a 17 year old from Basingstoke who was described as "a steady sober chap". Christopher Harris, the roundabout proprietor of Lewes had employed him as a fairground helper, until he left that employment in July 1908.

I understand that William approached Mr Harris again at the Shoreham Regatta and asked to be taken back. Mr. Harris told him that he had his full compliment of workers and that the season was all but over. William was very persistent. Mr. Harris finally relented, and the young man was engaged until he could find himself another job. The fair’s next stop was at Findon where they pitched on the 14th September on southwest side of Nepcote Green to be in attendance at the 1908 Sheep Fair.

The Great Findon Sheep Fair was prosperous that year with some 8,000 sheep penned, an increase of 2,000 on the previous year. The Lamb Fair earlier in July had seen a further 3,200 penned, which was an average for the era. All in all, this indicated prosperous times in the village for the auctioning of animals for which Findon had become famous.

Christopher Harris had a good day at the fair and his helpers were packing up for the night after the festivities. As it grew dusk the fairground was illuminated by the glare of the naphtha lamps. These occasionally underwent a degree of disturbance from the stiff breeze sweeping across the Green. The flaring lamps gave a flood of light on the faces of the workers near the roundabout. There was no escape from the pungent fumes given off from the glowing flares. It must be remembered that at the beginning of the 20th century there were no safety regulations.

William Warren enjoyed the open air life, and during the evening had been busy trimming the naphtha lamps. Naphtha flare lamps were patented back in 1848 and were used by showmen up until the First World War. They were surely a great fire hazard. No one worried about such things in those days.

William was tipping oil into a paraffin lamp when he spilt some down his trousers. The oil encroached on the grass around where he was standing. Suddenly it ignited. He immediately tried to stamp out the flames and kicked at the blazing grass with the intention of putting out the fire. His clothes immediately caught alight and he went up in flames. Understandably, he panicked.

screams alerted him. Men ran from the shadowy gloom of the fairground machines and tore off the lad’s clothing in an attempt to put out the inferno. It was not long before one of the fairground workers had harnessed a horse and cart and helping hands loaded the injured boy into it.

It was a terrible night on Nepcote Green as can now only be imagined. The anguish of the pain spread through William Warren’s body as the makeshift "horse drawn ambulance" jolted its patient across the Green. It was now nightfall as they proceeded down Nepcote passed the

darkened cottages with twinkling lights on the seemingly endless journey to Worthing Hospital.

Upon arrival William was immediately admitted and attended by Doctor Frank Hinds who found him to be suffering from extensive burns to the legs and thighs. Over the next three days in hospital all appeared to be going well but then the patient succumbed to blood poisoning on the Wednesday. The Matron was Miss Burford and she said that William Warren was conscious almost up to the last. Before he died he told her that he started to trim a lamp but did not know how it caught alight.

A scorched area of tufts of grass was all that was left as an awful reminder of where William Warren had met his fate on the night to be remembered on Nepcote Green. Within weeks the grass gradually grew lush and green and nothing was left for the villagers to be reminded of what had happened. I do not know exactly the spot of this accident, perhaps it is just as well as I would think about the tragedy every time I walked passed.

Crafting your Will enables you to have full control over the distribution of your assets after you die. By explicitly stating your wishes, you can ensure that any property, investments and personal belongings are distributed how you want. You will often hear me coin the phrase “Your Will, Your Way!” This can prevent confusion, reduce the likelihood of disputes and it can eliminate the need for expensive legal processes.

A Will is not just about assets though, it allows you to protect your loved ones in various ways. Guardianship provisions can be included to designate who will care for children, additionally, a Will can provide some security for elderly or dependent family members who require ongoing support.

There are also many options to leave financial help to the Charities closest to your heart.

The absence of a Will can leave loved ones in a difficult and emotionally challenging position. Having a roadmap in place can sometimes relieve them of the burden of making complex decisions during an already distressing time. It provides a clear set of instructions, making the estate settlement process smoother, faster, and less stressful. By avoiding intestacy laws, a Will also minimises unnecessary costs and preserves the value of the estate for your beneficiaries.

Transforming access to life saving treatment. By Lynn Smith

Diarrhoea is the second biggest killer of children worldwide, around 500,000 die per year. Even though the efficacy of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) given with zinc, has long been recognised as a simple solution, 85 percent of diarrhoea cases are not treated with ORS and zinc. The problem, it seems, has been getting the message and the anti-diarrhoea kits out to those who most need them.

In 1986, Simon Berry OBE and his wife Jane were working on the British Aid Programme in north east Zambia. Simon had spent twelve years working on the programme and he and Jane had three children under five years old. They were shocked to learn that, amongst their Zambian peers, one in five would die of simple causes, like diarrhoea, before their fifth birthday, and the couple resolved to do something about it.

Thus, the idea that became ColaLife was conceived. Although Simon Berry tells me, “This was before the internet and we had no phone in NE Zambia. So, it incubated for a while.” Then in 2008, their youngest child left home and Simon and Jane went to Facebook to publish their basic idea: “The co-distribution of medicine with CocaCola, making use of the unused space between the bottles.”

A question posed by Simon - “Why is it that you can get Coca-Cola wherever you go in the world, but you can't get life-saving medicines?” – gave the charity its name.

“The idea,” Simon says, “went viral.” Throughout 2009-10 they approached existing global child health organisations with the objective of them taking on ColaLife’s idea and network but found little interest. Then in June 2010, Simon and Jane gave up their jobs to focus on raising the funds necessary to test out their proposal themselves. In 2011 ColaLife was granted charitable status and, following successful fund-raising, in December 2011 they ceased to be volunteers. In 2019 the World Health Organisation (WHO) added copackaged ORS and zinc to its Essential Medicines List. By the end of 2020, sales of the kit reached 1.36million, which represents nearly 1.36million lives improved, with the Zambian government being the largest customer for the co-pack.

Now living in Coldwaltham, Simon tells me that he and Jane have carefully built the organisation’s guiding principles, the key one being that they do nothing that requires them to be a permanent part of the solution. The couple’s withdrawal from the organisation has been planned from the outset, so that, “Things will not collapse when we leave.” ColaLife also, “Respects and works with existing local organisations and within local systems, customs and procedures.” And, “Working in partnership, around an agreed mission not around us or a pot of money. This helps the partnership survive without us and deal with blips in funding.” Interestingly, the principles suppress the brand itself, as Simon says, “Our presence is only temporary. Parents in Zambia have never heard of ColaLife.” The Commercial format of the anti-diarrhoea kit is branded as Kit Yamoyo (Kit of Life) and there is a governmentbranded version too.

was imperative. Through this process the organisation learnt how, “Coca-Cola gets their products everywhere. Put simply: they design aspirational products and then market them directly to consumers; they then put their products into the distribution chain at a price that enables everyone involved to make a profit while at the same time ensuring that the product has a retail price that is affordable.”

Simon applied these same principles to an antidiarrhoea kit. “Although our initial focus was on the private sector, the Zambian government took on the product and now distributes it free at health clinics as well.” He also emphasises that, “The Coca-Cola Company’s involvement was during the pre-trial phase and was advisory; they never asked for anything in return, and we did not receive funding from Coca-Cola.”

Extending global reach

After the scale-up in Zambia, Simon says, “We looked at how we might have a global impact and decided this would be best achieved by changing the WHO guidelines for diarrhoea treatment. As always, we worked through other organisations and in partnership to achieve this. Since 2019, in response to our application, the

WHO now recommends that ORS and Zinc are co-packaged for the treatment of diarrhoea in children. In 2021 we co-founded the ORS and Zinc Co-pack Alliance (ORSZCA) to accelerate the uptake of this new recommendation by national governments.”

A husband-and-wife team

Simon tells me that for the trial and scale-up in Zambia, ColaLife received ‘project funding,’ i e funding directed to a specific project but that the organisation now benefits from ‘Strategic funding,’ which allows funds to be used in a way that the organisation feels most useful – within

agreed parameters. “This Strategic funding,” granted from the private, Isenberg Family Charitable Trust, “Has,” Simon says, “been absolutely crucial to our success.”

In terms of staffing, the charity is just Simon and Jane. “There are no additional staff and never have been.” Although ColaLife does use volunteers, who, in the past, have helped with product design, graphic design and data visualisation.

“Currently,” Simon says, “we are looking for a data analyst to help us with two more papers aimed at the academic press.” In terms of governance the organisation has a volunteer board that currently has five members.

Thousands of people have contributed to ColaLife

In recognition of his work, Simon was awarded an OBE in the 2023 new Year’s Honours List for Services to Global Child Health. However, when I congratulate him on his achievement, Simon is keen emphasis that ColalIfe’s impact is not just down to one man.

“ColaLife has won many awards over the years including ‘Product Design of the Year’ in 2013 and the ‘GSK / Save the Children Healthcare Innovation Award’ in 2015. These help enormously with profile and credibility. The 2015

award came with £300,000 which enabled us to leverage the additional funding we needed for the scale-up in Zambia.

“Awards bestowed on me personally I am hugely grateful for but are a bit more problematic. Thousands of people have contributed to the impact that ColaLife has had, it’s not just been down to me.” Amongst those contributors is Jane Berry, who Simon says, should have a fifty percent share in his OBE.

A charity that has achieved what it set out to achieve …

ColaLife has faced many challenges over the years, “But nothing that we’ve not been able to overcome.” Simon acknowledges that funding is always an issue with charities but that ColaLife has mitigated this by keeping small, agile and sharply focused on a single issue. Plus it has never had premises to maintain. At the end of this year ColaLife will close down gracefully having achieved what it set out to achieve (and a lot more).”

Are you ever too old to strength train?

Age means a natural reduction of the amount of muscle on our bodies, which means a reduction in our strength too. Of course, this means a change to your figure, but more importantly less strength also means decreased motor control and balance – which means higher chances of falling. Strength training can reduce your risk of injury in general by maintaining and improving your strength and coordination.

Age impacts our brain too as brain function declines. After 40, our brain function declines by about 5% per decade, and accelerates once we hit about 70. While there are no definite numbers, it has been repeatedly shown that those who maintain their fitness see markedly less decline in brain function.

When you’re starting strength exercise, or you’re going back to it after a break; there are a few things to keep in mind (regardless of your age):

• Start light. Don’t let your mind convince you that “some is good, so more must be better”. Start easier than you think you should. Gain confidence and skill before making things harder.

• Keep the intensity low. It’s always better to do less and to do it consistently, than it is to go all out too quickly or too often and hurt yourself.

• Work on mobility. The older you are, the more likely you are to have some kind of injury or postural deficiency which makes some positions harder for you to achieve. Keep working on your mobility.

Whilst we generally hate them, they are a vital source of food to toads, birds, beetles, mice and hedgehogs.

Every Garden Advice show has a snail question. Recently the RHS did a large experiment using all sorts of physical barriers and none were proven to be effective!

My friend recently picked off over 100 from amongst his vegetables, and did this every night for a week. By the 7th day he could hardly find any- so perhaps the best method is to manually remove them. However, if you are thinking of chucking them into your least favourite neighbour’s garden think again. In 2010 Mrs Brooke won the British Amateur Scientist of the Year award by painting snails with nail polish, then carrying them into a nearby woodland. Most eventually retuned, proving they have some kind of homing device. She suggests a 300 foot buffer zone would be effective! There are other methods of reducing the Shelleys of this world. The Soil Association approve Ferric phosphate though the RSPB

warns that it also includes other chemicals which aren’t good for worms.

There are the beer, yogurt and fruit traps, nematodes especially effective against slugs, or you could think about creating a lovely lettuce patch for them and so distracting them from the real vegetable patch.

Whatever your relationship with Shelley, they have lived on the Earth more than half billion years. That is something!

A Rough Guide to Planning Permission

When considering any extension or home improvement, always consult a professional and get official advice from experts. Here are some key points regarding planning permission in the UK.

1. Planning permission is required for most forms of development, including new buildings, extensions, and alterations as well as change of use.

2. Minor changes may fall under permitted development rights, which allow certain types of development or change without any need for formal permission. Check with a professional.

3. The Local Planning Authority (LPA) grant permission. They are usually part of the local council. Each LPA has their own Local Development Plan which sets out policies and guidelines.

4. Planning applications must be submitted to the LPA. The application usually includes architectural and site plans and supporting documents describing the proposed changes.

5. The LPA has to consider various factors including impact on the neighbourhood and local environment, disturbance to neighbouring properties,

infrastructure, and making sure the plan complies with local policies. Also whether there have been any public objections.

Award Winning Architectural Practice

Chilli chia nachos

With Black Beans & homemade tomato salsa

Ingredients - Serves 4

• 135g Chia tortilla chips

• 150g Chilli marble, grated

• 2 tsp Carla’s piri piri seasoning

• 1 tsp Carla’s paprika seasoning

• 1 tin Mr Organics black beans, rinsed

• 1 avocado, diced

• 6 tbsp Tim’s Dairy natural Greek yogurt

For the Homemade Salsa, combine all the following ingredients and stir well.

• 300g Nutbourne cherry tomatoes, diced

• 2 tbsp Loft Pickles chilli jelly

• Juice from ½ a lime

Method

1. Heat oven to 180C fan. Arrange the tortilla chips over two-thirds of the baking tray, spoon most of the salsa on top of the tortillas and scatter over half of the cheese.

2. Mix the remaining salsa with the red pepper and beans, and tip onto the empty third of the

tray. Scatter over the rest of the cheese and sprinkle the nachos and beans with the paprika and piri piri evenly. Bake for 1015 mins or until the cheese has melted. Scatter the avocado over the beans and add dollops of the yogurt to serve.

Autumn Show & International Horse Trials

Findon Parish Council

Potholes; bins; defibrillator; equestrians

Potholes and road markings. Additional funds had been invested to make permanent repairs, including surfacing work on Long Furlong, once drier conditions happen. The current cost to resurface is £500k per kilometre.

A councillor had asked for the ‘zig zag’ lines and road markings on School Hill to be inspected, and asked the Cleansing Team to identify where bins had been left out to preserve car parking spaces. Reference was made to an overgrown hedge on private land and the owner would be contacted to remind them of their legal duties.

New dog/waste bins. Reference was made to an email from Arun District Cllr Bicknell, who suggested the dog waste and litter bins on Pond Green be relocated to the gap in the flint wall.

Cllr Bicknell also offered to replace the existing old-style dog bin with a new one at no cost to FPC. Once relocated, consideration could be given for the installation of a footpath behind the

flint wall so that children would not have to walk in the road.

Cllr Bicknell had produced a draft poster to highlight the locations of dog bins and was thanked for his help.

Defibrillator. The Clerk advised that, due to her workload, she was not able to report any progress at the meeting. Reference was made to LondonHearts as a potential funding opportunity for a £300 grant. The relocated defibrillator in Horsham Road would also be replaced.

Equestrian access. Horse riders currently have to ride up Nepcote to access the Green. It was suggested that consideration be given to moving an existing gate approx. twenty feet away from benches by the southern wall area so that horse riders need not use Nepcote as the means of access. Cllr Smith would discuss this with the SDNPA Conservation Officer and bring proposals to a future parish council meeting.

We were again lucky in June, to enjoy sunny weather for the monthly market in Lime tree Surgery’s car park. August’s market is on Sunday 27th, from 9.30am. If you haven’t been to one of our local markets before do come along to browse, we have a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Local Artists’ Exhibition

The Findon Valley Art Group will be holding their first public exhibition since Covid at the Free Church Hall, Lime Tree Avenue. This is on Saturday 19th August, 10am till 4pm. Tea and coffee available, everyone welcome.

Cissbury Fields

Plans for the Community Orchard are progressing well, with funding applications being drafted to cover the cost of planting some 35 apple and all Sussex varieties. The Borough Council are hoping to have an information stand

at the Findon Sheep Fair on 9th September.

Antisocial driving

Our local Police Community Liaison Officer has highlighted that antisocial and dangerous driving can be reported online through the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership’s “Operation Crackdown" (www.sussexsaferroads.gov.uk) . Citizens who report such antisocial behaviour will not be identified to those responsible for the problem. Even video footage can be used, where filming does not put the reporting person at risk of harm. Wishing everyone an enjoyable summer.
