Here comes the summer! Yes, June is the official start of summer, and the solstice on Wednesday 21st June is the longest day, when the Earth tilts on its axis closest to the sun. It’s also Father’s Day on the 18th June. which in the UK owes more to the American celebration, designated as a US public holiday in 1972 by President Richard Nixon. Whatever its origins, it remains a wonderful opportunity to treat our dads and remember fathers and grandfathers no longer with us. It's a pleasure this month to publicise the work of “Reaching Families” a Worthing-based charity helping children with special needs and their families.

Rewilding Britain's Rewilding Innovation Fund has granted funding to the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project, which aims to restore the depleted ocean kelp forests along the Sussex coastline. Kelp is a natural carbon store and encourages breeding grounds for fish and other marine animals. www.rewildingbritain.org.uk

Sussex Police Commissioner Katy Bourne has been meeting with partners, police and retailers to look at options for preventing anti-social behaviour as well as ways to carry out early interventions and enact immediate justice where offenders are seen in the community putting things right. Ms Bourne wants communities to suggest what reparative activities they’d like to see and will be releasing details of how to do this soon.

Sussex Police have hired an additional 429 police officers as part of the government's initiative to recruit 20,000 officers across England and Wales by the end of March 2023. In addition, 250 extra officers were recruited, funded by an increase in the police portion of local council tax, bringing the total number of additional officers to 679 to improve neighbourhood and response teams.

Ofsted Inspectors have praised West Sussex County Council’s Children’s Services for its ‘relentless approach to improving practice,’ giving the service an overall rating of ‘requires improvement’, with two ‘good’ judgements and two that ‘require improvement to be good’. This rating is up from the 2019 full inspection of Children’s when all areas were rated as inadequate.

The South Downs National Park is launching its 2023

Gouda love a cheese chase!

To celebrate the Coronation, the folks at Wild Heart Hill camping in Findon held a cheese chase for just 100 brave souls who hurled themselves down the hill in pursuit of a 10lb Gouda (adults) and a couple of Camemberts for the children. Night to Remember for Polly Polly Hearn, from Worthing, will be donning her walking shoes this June as she prepares for her

third Night to Remember in aid of St Barnabas House – and this year, for the first time, her children (11 and 13) will be joining her.

Polly has first-hand experience of the hospice’s care. “In the autumn of 2018, my stepdad, David, went into St Barnabas,” she says. “The care for him and my mum during that time was amazing.”

Smart motorways discontinued

Utilising the hard shoulder for safety on motorways

Road safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), welcomed the decision to scrap developing new smart motorways for safety reasons. RoSPA has campaigned for road safety for over a century and has highlighted the higher risk of collisions between stationary and moving vehicles on smart motorways compared to conventional ones, with road users calling for the return of the hard shoulder. Road Safety Manager at RoSPA, stated drivers want the hard shoulder and motorists need to feel safe on roads. RoSPA welcomes plans to shelve construction of smart motorways and hopes the money will be used to make motorways safer in other ways. Live lane breakdowns can happen where a hard shoulder is in place, and it is only a relative place of safety. Collisions and injury can still occur, which is why RoSPA will continue to educate motorists on what to do in an emergency on the road.

Smart motorway safety feature investments are ongoing like the retrofit of emergency refuge areas. RoSPA tips for encountering problems on the motorway: If a driver is on a motorway with a hard shoulder and needs to do an instant stop, use momentum to move over to the left lane and stop on the hard shoulder, turn on the hazards and ensure side lights are illuminated if it's dark. Be aware of changes in the car's handling, stop as far to the left as possible, get all occupants out of the car, and call for help using the nearest SOS phone. If the driver is on a smart motorway and can still drive, get to a service area or emergency refuge area. If they break down in a live lane, get the vehicle as far off the road as possible, turn on hazard lights, and get out of the vehicle on the left-hand side if it's safe, if not, stay in the car with the seatbelt on and call 999. www.rospa.com

The simple fact of the matter is we are all living a little bit longer. We live in a world which is changing at considerable pace, advances in technology have seen the introduction of new vaccines, cures and better medicine. We are now on course to extend our life expectancy by nearly 20 years compared to those of just 3 generations ago. However, an ageing population comes with it’s own not so hidden problems.

Illnesses such as Parkinson Disease and Dementia are becoming increasingly diagnosed Recent studies now predict that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men are likely to contract these debilitating illnesses in their lifetime and although there is more and more research and better and better medication available, the effects it has on families and loved ones can be overwhelming, although, losing the capacity to make decisions can come at any age, it’s certainly not just restricted for the elderly.

I am all to aware of the impacts that accidents can have and speak with people on a weekly

basis who are going through the trauma and adjustment of what their future now holds. In so many of these cases, we explore ways of handing over legal powers of decision making both in a financial capacity and in their ongoing care environment. The process at this point can become somewhat lengthy, time consuming and frustrating. None of us really know what’s round the corner, LPAs are certainly not an insurance policy, but they do offer you the chance to nominate those you trust the most to carry out your wishes when you no longer have the mental or physical function to do so. Whether it’s simple things like paying the bills or large life events like moving home, having the peace of mind that those decisions are in place can be a bit of relief to everyone involved.

Football in Findon 1930s -1960s

honour of the team was at stake and Findon was winning cups at the matches. Later the football team used the old tearooms at the "Black Horse" public house as their headquarters and enjoyed many evenings of entertainment, especially after winning cups during the season.

Above is the old "Black Horse" public house in the main street.

The inn was demolished to make way for the new Findon Bypass in 1939 and a brand new "Black Horse" public house was built as is illustrated below.

The front row is Jack Norgate; Dennis Hazelgrove; maybe John Spiers; Cecil Rose; Brian Pelling. Findon played in the Worthing and District League between the two World Wars. The village squad was called Findon Athletic... otherwise known as "The Amber and Blacks".

The team’s changing rooms at the home ground pitch were in the cottage called "Coachmans" facing Nepcote Green. From there the players of the day jogged across the lane to the Green. The pitch was through the small gateway immediately east of Nepcote House... now badger territory. Otherwise the players could change their clothes under cover of a clump of beech trees. No one worried in those days when the

The re-built Black Horse bordering the new Findon Bypass… it is still dispensing pints today. During the Second World War the team's pitch was requisitioned by the Canadian Army for training purposes. Findon Athletic was resurrected after hostilities when Findon's menfolk returned.

I have one little story appertaining to post war years and this is still talked about to this day. In

1955 Dennis Goddard of The Forge had just changed into his football gear to play as goalkeeper for Findon when the fire alarm bell sounded. Being a Findon fireman, he left immediately to fight the local blaze. When he returned he proceeded to let in eight goals. The Findon Athletic was finally disbanded in the 1960s.

Egrets & the forming of the RSPB

What is the Connection?

Pitched against a moody grey sky, or the pale tan reeds of RSPB Pagham Harbour, the pure white egret is a magical sight. You are likely to see Little Egrets and Cattle Egrets, and if you’re lucky, you might also see the stunning Great White Egret.

Although there is some evidence of egrets in the UK dating back to the fifteenth century, detailed information is scarce. This all changed in 1989 when Little Egrets started to arrive from Europe; now more than 1100 pairs are breeding in the UK.

Little Egrets

The Little Egret is a common sight around RSPB Pagham Harbour and Medmerry. This elegant bird with its black beak, black legs and somewhat comical yellow feet may seem rather gentle and unassertive compared to the more raucous seabirds of the area. During breeding season it displays beautiful long white plumes on its nape and back.

Cattle Egrets

Little Egrets could be confused with another very recent resident – the Cattle Egret, which has been breeding at Pagham Harbour since 2020. As the name would indicate, they are likely to be seen pecking around the feet of cattle for insects to feed upon. You might also notice that it is a stockier bird with shorter legs, a smaller head. During the breeding season, its bill turns yellow and the plumage takes on a orangey tan colour on its crest, breast and lower back.

Great White Egrets

These large, pure white herons are a magnificent sight. If you spot a Great White Egret at RSPB Pagham Harbour or Medmerry it is likely to be a visitor from Europe, or on its way to or from a breeding site in the UK – more than 60 young birds fledged in Somerset in 2022 alone – per-

haps one day they’ll be breeding here in West Sussex too.

The Fashion for Feathers

What is the connection between egrets and the forming of the RSPB? From 1870 – 1920, the fashion for feathers in ladies’ hats was booming, fuelling what became one of the most lucrative trades in the world. It was an industry which saw the decimation of millions of birds both at home and abroad: Native species such as kingfishers, great crested grebes and owls were hunted, as well as birds of paradise, ostrich, peacocks, parrots, macaws, humming and many, many more.

Three Pioneering Women

From this emerged three key women: Eliza Phillips, Etta Lemon and Emily Williamson, all passionate about the lives of birds and conservation. While Emily Williamson was forming The Plumage League in Manchester, Eliza Phillips and Etta Lemon were starting The Fin, Fur and Feather Folk in Croydon; they later joined forced to form the Society for the Protection of Birds (SPB) in 1889.

In 1890 they produced their first leaflet: ‘Destruction of Ornamental Plumaged Birds’, which focused on the annihilation of the egret population, appealing to women to stop buying hats with feathers.

They went on to disseminate thousands of leaflets denouncing the hunting of birds and the use of feathers in fashion. In 1904 the SPB received the royal charter from Edward VII and became the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds as we know it today.

Reaching families...

Supporting young people with special educational needs

Many founders of charities or not-forprofit organisations decide to start their own organisation as a result of finding themselves unable to find the support they themselves need … Brian O’Hagan, Director of Reaching Families, is no exception.

In 2008, Brian had recently moved back to Worthing, after many years living in London, and had a child, James, who had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy at eight weeks old. Brian says, “When my son was poorly, I noticed that there was very little support for parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) so I began to explore what could be offered to support parents and families and in doing so, enhance the quality of life for children with SEND and their families.” Having spent 25 years working in the voluntary sector Brian decided to use his skills to launch an organisation that could achieve these objectives.

Working with over 3,000 West Sussex families

Brian explains that the aim of Reaching Families is to empower families of children with SEND in order for them to “maximise the support they receive from external agencies, have the knowledge and skills to care for a child or young person with SEND and to improve their resilience and emotional wellbeing through the support of other families in a similar situation.

“We do that through the delivery of a one-stop shop of services that includes an in-depth parent -carer guide, an online library of factsheets and animations, training workshops and courses, benefits advice and a befriending service for parents of children undergoing diagnosis.” The charity also has parent support groups based in Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Littlehampton, Worthing and online via zoom. With another group to be launched in Shoreham later this year.

Every year, Reaching Families supports over 3,000 families with a range of projects and services. Although the charity does receive referrals from health, schools and the local authority, referrals are not necessary for those seeking support from the organisation.

Delivering a range of information and training services

Reaching Families achieves its mission is to “empower, inform and support parents and families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in West Sussex,” through the delivery of a wide range of services. Possibly key amongst which is the charity’s parent-carer guide: “Making Sense of It All” –often referred to by users as the “parent-carer bible.” The guide is designed to enable and inform parents of children with SEND from birth through to adulthood, covering subjects including diagnosis, benefits and money matters, accessing support at school and from health & social care, and transition into adult life. It also contains a useful directory of local and national organisations, and an equally useful, and extensive, jargon-buster. The charity also offers a series of fact sheets on childhood disabilities and rare syndromes, combining clinical information with local information on relevant projects, services and support for a particular condition. All information is localised to the needs of West Sussex families. Reaching families also produces information in the form of animated films – Animation Shorts – on a variety of subjects.

In 2021-22, 2,600 copies of the Making Sense of it All guide were downloaded/delivered to families, whilst over 10,000 factsheets were downloaded from the Reaching Families website.

Additionally, there is a range of Training Workshops for the parent-carer, again free of charge, and a “Making Sense of it All – Foundation Course”, introducing key issues parent-carers will face as their child grows and develops, which is available via Zoom or in person. Again, in 2021-22, 949 parents attended one of Reaching Families training workshops.

“Face-2-Face Befriending” and Parent Support Groups

Parent-carers of recently diagnosed children also have an opportunity to benefit from befriending and emotional support, from an experienced and specially trained parent-carer, under the charity’s Face-2-Face Befriending project. Volunteer based, the charity’s befrienders undergo intensive training, are DBS checked and have ongoing support and supervision.

Monthly support groups - Umbrellas Parent Support groups are based in Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Littlehampton and Worthing and since Covid, a weekly online group meets on Zoom. These groups can be crucial for isolated parents, offering the opportunity to connect with other parents and signposting them to other relevant projects and services.

Amongst the information provided in Reaching Families’ Impact report for 2021 22, are figures illustrating the positive effect the charity has upon the lives of those who use its services. 90 percent of parent-carers reported improved knowledge in accessing support for their child, whilst 80 percent of parent-carers reported feeling more resilient in overcoming difficulties thanks to peer support. And 78 percent of parentcarers reported improved skills and selfconfidence in supporting their child as a result of attending a Reaching Families training course.

Reaching Families is funded from a variety of sources including the National Lottery, the local authority, the NHS and various charitable trusts and foundations. When I ask about Fundraising Events, Brian says that, “We very rarely put on fundraising events mainly because we are a small team and do not have the resources for managing these sorts of events.”

However, if you enjoy running, cycling, skydiving or putting on coffee mornings then Brian O’Hagan would be delighted to hear from you to discuss how you could raise much needed funds to sustain the work of the charity. “We have been very lucky to have had support from local people with fundraising, for example, a family in Littlehampton last Christmas raised money for us through a Christmas light show. Another lady ran a Zumbathon for us, many more have given donations.”

Reaching Families is also keen to hear from anyone who might want to volunteer with the charity. “We use volunteers in our befriending service… Our team of twenty volunteers provide emotional and practical support with things like

signposting, accessing other services, learning about their child’s condition and meeting other parent-carers.” There are other ways in which volunteers can contribute to the charity too – by promoting the work of Reaching Families at community events, representing the charity at groups in your own local area or by distribution information to community venues, such as preschools and GP surgeries.

Exponential growth in demand for services since Covid

Now, more than ever charities are struggling to provide their much-needed services. As Brian says, “Our biggest challenge is meeting an exponential increase in demand for our service. Since the start of the covid pandemic demand has increased in some projects by over 200 percent. Finding the funds to increase resources to meet that demand has been difficult particularly in the current economic climate.”

Notice how far you have come

We often hold ourselves to very high standards when it comes to our diet and exercise routines.

If we’re not seeing what we want to see – or if we’re not seeing it as quickly as we would like –we often throw in the towel and quit.

We end up with a bit of an ‘all or nothing’ approach as our interest rises and falls depending on where we feel in relation to our goals.

A good strategy to help maintain your consistency is to remember to look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go.

Let’s say your ultimate goal is to be in a regular exercise routine. To you, that means 3 workouts a week. Your starting point was zero. Now, you’re getting 2 workouts most weeks and 3 sometimes. That is not failing – that is great progress!

How about if your goal is to get 10,000 steps a day. Your starting point was 2,000 and now you’re getting about 6,000… Again, that is not failing. You’re consistently able to do more than you could at the start. You are making progress!

Let’s say your nutrition goal is to cook three meals a day from scratch. Your starting point was cooking one meal a day yourself, and now you manage to cook two meals a day several times a week. Of course, there’s more work to do – but throwing the towel in and going back to your old habits is not going to help. You are closer to your goal than you were, so keep on making progress! So, when the going gets tough, remember to take a look back at how far you’ve come. Make sure you really allow yourself to notice the changes. Borde Hill - The World in One Garden

Borde Hill Gardens is a mecca for those interested in beautiful views, rare plants and Champion trees. Colonel Stephenson Clarke, who created the garden from the late 19th Century onwards, sponsored plant hunting trips throughout the world. The result is a fantastic collection of rare trees, including 65 Champion trees (these are the largest of their particular species in the whole of Britain).

Set in 383 acres of Grade 2 Heritage listed landscape, the gardens consist of a loosely connected arrangement of ‘rooms’- the Azalea Ring, Italian Gardens, the Rose Garden and perennial borders whilst being more wild on the edges giving way to lakes and open ground.

Harry Baldwin, the fresh faced and energetic Head Gardener, is passionate about how history and horticulture interweave in this space he looks after. We walk along a row of great Chestnuts which used to be on either side of the drive leading to the mansion, still occupied by the 5th generation of the founding family members. “This here is a Japanese Oak, one of only a handful that survived the original seed germination when they were brought back from Japan. I found one of these hiding in a hedge in Kew when I worked there which everyone had forgotten about. They were the last seeds plant collector Richard Oldham sent back from Asia before he died of Dysentry.” “And this is a Meliosma beaniana, one of only three in the British Isles that was bought at auction in 1932 and

transported by lorry and then horse and cart here from North London.” Harry shows me a black and white photo of its parent tree in China, a photo that is part of an extensive well-preserved archive. “It looks like its parent don’t you think? We measure it regularly and the trunk expands about 1cm every year!” I have the feeling I am walking around an art gallery and museum, not just a garden. We come to a huge magnificent 30m tree just coming into leaf. “This is a Chinese Tulip tree, a Liriodendron. For years we tried to propagate

it and then we noticed a sapling growing up. It did it itself.

This one will be one of the 130 grafted or propagated trees we are planning to plant in the gardens to celebrate 130 years of horticulture here” He points to a Camelia as we wind our way back to the Italian garden. “This is the double pink flowering Camellia ‘Donation’. It was raised here in the 1930’s and now is sold all over the world!”

Our walk passes boggy ground, great hollows made from sand mining, ancient woodland and views of lakes. “We will be making an educational space down near the lake, with an eco-lodge and cafe. I would like to leave behind a legacy of protecting this collection, and we are digitising the whole of the archive”. We pass a stand of Redwoods, the 3 Magnolia Sisters, and every so often

bones of the landscape. We finish at the Rose Garden. Created in the 1990’s after the owner, Mrs Clarke, read, to her surprise, an old 1902 copy of Countylife magazine praising the beauty of Borde Hill Rose Gardens. She decided to recreate this, and this quadrant of garden now consists of

a colour wheel of over 700 roses, with 150 different David Austin species.

Not normally a fan of sculpture in gardens, you must see the triangular, perspective bending sculpture called Round Dell by garden designer, Sophie Walker. It is perhaps the most thought provoking, unusual visual art installation I have ever seen in a garden.

Smokey chipolata & spring onion frittata

With a quick & easy tomato salad

Ingredients - Serves 4

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 400g chipolata sausages (try our butchers S K Hutchings)

• 6 eggs

• 50g of bread, torn into small pieces

• 1 bunch springs onions, thinly sliced

• 50g applewood smoked, grated

• 2 garlic cloves, crushed

• 2 tbsp dried parsley, (Carla’s Seasoning)

• 2 tbsp paprika, (Carla’s Seasoning)

• Salt and pepper to season

To Serve – Quick Tomato Salad

For the Tomato Salad, roughly chop a selection of ‘Nutbourne’ tomatoes, and mix with 2 tbsp of ‘Loft Pickles’ chilli jelly.

Method

1. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan. Add the chipolatas and cook for 7-8 minutes until browned.

2. Meanwhile, crack the eggs into a large bowl and beat together, stir in the chunks of bread,

spring onions, garlic, parsley and paprika then lightly season.

3. Pre heat the grill to a medium heat.

4. Pour the egg mixture over the chipolatas and cook on the lowest heat for 6 -7 minutes or until the egg is completely set.

5. Sprinkle the frittata with the smoked cheddar and place the pan under the grill for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.

6. Slide onto a chopping board and cut into slices and serve with the tomato salad.

Grants and Donations

National Lottery Application - A grant application for £2000 to commemorate the King’s Coronation had been successful and it was resolved to purchase two seats for the Recreation Ground from Jati Limited at a net cost of £1500 plus fixing kits and delivery, with the balance used for installation costs.

Whilst a request for £300 by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance did not meet the Parish Council’s grant awarding criteria, in recognition of their work it was resolved to make a donation of £50 to the charity under LGA 1972, S137.

Recreation Ground

Tree Survey (due in May). The Clerk had sought to obtain three quotes for an annual ground level inspection, albeit only two had been received and, on the basis that it met the Council’s

requirements in terms of an interim review and was most competitively priced, It was resolved to accept the quote provided by Beechdown Arboriculture Limited at an estimated cost of £250.

Path - Balfour Beatty had confirmed that they would be making a site visit on the day of the meeting to measure up and provide recommendations on the surface as part of its community support scheme. No further update was available on the concreting of the manhole cover.

Noticeboards - The two Platinum Jubilee plates would be installed, possibly at the same time as the new benches.

Fencing and Gates (Southern Boundary) - In line with clause 18.6 of the Recreation Ground Lease, installation would be discussed further at the Council’s May meeting, with two contractors now identified to provide quotes. Agreed to review and improve the gate by the Junction which was proving difficult to open.

Jubilee memorial garden

The Jubilee Memorial Garden is now in place at Findon Valley Library, following the ‘Grand Opening' at our Coronation party on 7th May. This is a peaceful and permanent place in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ii. The garden includes 7 Queen Elizabeth roses - one for each decade of the Queen’s reign.

Planters and gardens

Did you know that FVRA and our Friends of Findon Valley group also tend the planters and garden near the library and King’s Parade and work with the rangers planting and clearing on Cissbury Fields.
