ADVANCED SKILLS - BREAD AND BUTTER WORK RESEARCH

This research section will contain research I have gathered to inform my ideas for this module. Pages will consist of imagery I find both primary and secondary to create a mood-board of inspiration to help me progress through the design cycle.

Sourced from pinterest - (Left) Simple minimal bread packaging , with an interesting box design that allows you to smell the bread. An interactive aspect like that could be interesting to use. It has a more independent feel towards targeting more trendy people. - (right) Second design is more illustrative, nicely illustrated popular style, very bright and colourful would stand out much more on a shelf to other packaging. This one would be targeted towards a younger audience .

- (Left) Food trends 2014. Found this infographic which explains food trends of 2014. Japanese,Scandinavian and American food are trending or will be trending. This could inform my decision on what type of sandwich I could do. - (Middle) Japanese style hand printed onto brown paper and then taped up. One colour block printed, it’s quite nice reflects the simplicity of Japanese design. If I was to do a Japanese style sandwich this could be a nice simple way to packaged my sandwich. - (right) Another design more graphic, simple and typographic with nice use of space. Simple quick packaging brown paper and simple box card.

Pinterest Sourced - (Top Left) Gramma’s Hand Cranked Jam. Lovely piece of illustrative packaging. Great character and an interesting way of bringing in that character to the jar, working well together. So maybe I could look at bringing in that design aspect to the standard packaging. - (Top Right) Milk cartons that have an illustration that goes around the packaging and when joined with other boxes creates an collectable aspect, which is something I could possibly explore. A packaging that you want to keep. - (Bottom) Two Japanese style boxes. On the left a minimal recyclable box. Japanese style artwork really interests me because of how simple and minimal they are and the use of space. Looks like it was hand printed which could link with the over message and communication of the packaging.

- (Left) Simple illustrated box design with serrated edge. I think the illustrated design. They are all individual and look great in a set. The Eco friendly Cardboard is appealing and would be the right choice. - (Middle) The box for this sandwich design is pretty cool. A nice bespoke looking box again with eco friendly material. A unique and easy function to open the box different which is different than other boxes. Creates a fun experience. - (Top Right) Student award sandwich packaging. They have identified an issue when eating a sandwich that it can get quite messy. This packaging has a function that follows the profession of eating a sandwich right down to the last bite. - (Bottom right) Another interesting way of eating sandwich pealing back the packaging to allow you to eat the sandwich whilst still covered.

- (Top) Minimal recycled brown paper, again with a nice hand printed design. Maybe I could take this and do something hand printed. - (Bottom Left) Wrapping the sandwich in a wrap and with a sticker could be a separate piece of design for the sandwich. - (Bottom right) Grid layout very organised. Pattern design to distinguish the packaging. Clear see through design which allows the customer to see the product.

- Creative packaging design with some interesting folding packaging design. Rather than unwrapping the box simply folds out to display the contents within. Very simple and Id feel this concept could work well with my Japanese styled sandwich as the folds resemble origami.

- Some Template designs I found more along the line of origami packaging but could be re-purposed for my sandwich packaging. May encounter some problems in the function of some and may have to experiment with these to see if they are right to package a sandwich.

- I bought a Tesco sandwich for some primary research to discover what was actually included on a sandwich package. This information is vital as it will allow me create a realistic piece of packaging. Front of the packaging - Logo - The brand - What sandwich it is

- Nutritional values - Fat - Saturates - Sugars - Salt - Calorie intake - Date of expiry - Price

Back of the packaging

- Ingredients

- Allergy advice - Nutrients - Nutrient table - Keep refrigerated - Artificial colouring - Warnings about bones - Recycle logos - FSC logo - Barcode - Address - Info on where the meat came from

- Here are some box templates I’ve experimented with from my research. The top box works really well. I could see this design working quite as a sandwich packaging as it is an origami gift box like some of the following. - The box folds out nicely to reveal the sandwich and also acts as a plate. - The bottom packaging was a little ambitious, it was quite difficult to put together so for this reason I don’t think this is the right design.

- Originally Gift box design but could be re purposed for a sandwich. A nice handle to hold and carry the sandwich. - There maybe an issue with the sandwich staying fresh as there are gaps and I don’t think that the packaging will hold the sandwich securely to be carried.

- Again the Packaing would open out and reveal the sandwich. Maybe the sandwich could be wrapped

- Packaging inspired by my research. I liked the way the packaging opened as it reflected origami folds. Very practical and easy design. Easy to open and to access what’s inside. Two great contenders for the final packaging piece. - On the adjacent page are some reference logos for my Japanese style sandwich brand. Looking at traditional branding quite simple clean a modern take on the traditional seals.

- Early development of the logo gathered some inspiration from the internet of the god so that my illustrative logo would represent the god. Looking closely at what the god is holding a wearing. I gathered some reading material on this site to give me more an idea of what exactly he consists on.

- I found out about one of the Japanese Buddha gods Daikoku. He is considered a deity of the kitchen and a provider of food. He is invariably shown standing on two bales of rice holding his magic mallet and treasure sack. - He also is seen as a happy-looking god of wealth, farmers, food, and good fortune. So i thought he was a suitable image to base my brand around. - I’ve also kept traditional colour of the seals an orange/red colour to help the communication. Wanted to keep the design simple with simple lines and a boarder. The type can fit underneath nicely to complete the image.

- I decided to fit the name of the brand into the actual illustration and keep the flavours separate so this logo can be reproduced with different ingredients. - I also placed the Japanese symbol for Daikoku as further detail to assure that it is Japanese. - Overall The logo turned out the way I wanted to. I feel the brand symbolises traditional Japanese food.

First example of my template this will need developing as the project continues to adjust. This the professional way of presenting using a key to differentiate from cutting lines and folding lines so that the user can understand the procedure when creating the packaging.

More refined template taking in consideration of the actual size for the sandwich and adjusting to those measurements. I had to change the size so that the base and top were the same but the sides were a bit shorter. Change the colour to prep for the print, the colour of the lines match the paper so i can see it to construct but not enough to see it when completed - To close the box I’m thinking of using a sticker.

- I wanted my logo design to progress through to the design of the packaging. So I kept the colour running throughout. - I also kept the logo running throughout so that it could be seen in each direction. - Japanese style keeps it simple and modern, less is more. - I wanted the flavour to be more in your face so I decided to include the ingredients on the front to give the customer more insight into what it is the sandwich, so its more appealing to the customers.
