ADVANCED SKILLS - Do The Green Thing Research This research section will contain research I have gathered to inform my ideas for this module. Pages will consist of imagery I find both primary and secondary to create a mood-board of inspiration to help me progress through the design cycle.

DADU SHIN - Images sourced from the internet and pinned to my illustration board.

- Simple, Minimal, Vector graphics - Illustrated by hand then digital rendered on the computer. - Geometric - limited colour pallet - Bright and colourful.
Twistedfork
- Infographic Poster demonstrating how to make smores. Interesting Idea maybe I could create an infographic poster for Do The Green Thing.
Legas Delaney - Cut leaf illustration for “Plant for the Planet. - Using meaningful objects to communicate to the audience. - Cutting into paper, leaves or other material then photographed to produce the poster could be a cool poster.
Matthew Young - Illustrated book cover. - Minimal, captures the mood of the book with the use of colour and distance.
Sticktown by Paula Rusu
- Awesome line drawing in illustrator, Flat, Graphic, could be adapted into some sort of inforgraphic? Or could be a nice illustration style to create a cool poster in.
Vu-Tuan-Dang Tran infographic CV - Really like the use of photography and illustration. This concept could be taken and used for my poster, taking pictures of fruit and veg and illustrating a statistic?
HSBC - in the future we will be planting cities Using existing material and reusing it to create a city to get across the message. Maybe I could use this concept and adapt it to my message of self sufficiency.
HUGGIES - Because your world is your baby’s Canvas. - Nice idea of a describing the world as a canvas for your baby to make a mess/ art.
THINGSPRGANISEDNEATLY. TUMBLR.COM - This tumblr site gave me an idea of maybe laying out veg or farming tools like this as a concept. Then maybe add a strap line underneath that explains these are the necessary tools to be self sufficient.
- More specific posters that are at the heart of my issue. Nice way of using existing tools and linking them with other materials in a clever way. For example spade and folk with kitchen cutlery. Spades and ships which have a similar shape creates a nice balanced argument and juxtaposition of the two sides.
DO THE GREEN THING POSTERS To get more of an idea at what posters they are looking for I decided to gather some existing posters from their website http://dothegreenthing.com. This will help me with some inspiration and gather more knowledge about the project. My issue is to encourage people to grow your own food use what grass you have and plant something.
ADVANCED SKILLS - DTGT DEVELOPMENT This development section will show how my ideas have been developed into the final piece of artwork in response to the brief. My sketchbook contains the ideas and thoughts I went through to get to this stage.
- Illustrated in my style some tools that you can use to help you prepare your land for planting and for gathering your vegetables. The idea was to that their is a new food revolution and you choose your weapon to be apart of it.
- It seems a little bare atm. Maybe some colour and a background might make this more appealing and encourage the action. - I could recreate this but with using actual tools and photographing them. Might have a better effect if its something real. - I could experiment and try to make it look like a ‘we need you’ type poster.
- From the top I used the tools I created and put them as cutlery along with a plate of veg. It’s pretty self explanatory with the type or without. Again still not fully developed could add colour and maybe a background to make it look less bare. - Inspired by hingsorganisedneatly.com I’ve illustrated some equipment needed, like an essential list. Hoping to fill the whole page and maybe have some type at the bottom. Again add colour - I could try experimenting with real tools and photograph them for that physical approach.
Here was another quick idea I mocked up. The concept behind this one was to show how growing your own food can save you money. I’ve linked the two aspects together; being the plants in the shape of a pound sign to help communicate that message. I believe it successful and it’s personal as it is of my illustration style.
A piece of experimentation with soil, as a felt the physicality is more of what do the green thing is about, it communicates a better than something digital. Typography based idea combining the message of the type with the nature of the soil to raise awareness that you can use your land to create food. This could be developed further by photo-hopping the type into a more suited background and maybe adding some food to help with the communication.
I thought it would be an awesome idea to use my garden as the canvas and use the tools I gathered to create My poster. Here are some shots I took whilst creating the piece.
I began laying the tools out like I did in my illustrations but I felt it looked to plain, something was missing. So decided to right in the soil ‘Grow your own veg’, quite bluntly.
- I believe the combination, of a real garden, real tools, and real soil gives it that personal and more striking action to appeal to the audience. It came out really well and the weather was on my side. It rained the next day.
