ADVANCED SKILLS - FS TV/RADIO RESEARCH

This research section will contain research I have gathered to inform my ideas for this module. Pages will consist of imagery I find both primary and secondary to create a mood-board of inspiration to help me progress through the design cycle.

Logo Lounge 4 - Looking at Joining characters together using negative space 3D/ Angled logo maybe interesting to try. - Creating a badge, crest maybe suitable for Future Skills. - Clean, Modern San Serif typeface would be fitting, Simple, minimal, Framing characters with shapes could be explored.

Logo Lounge 7 - Using Different Typefaces spelling out the word rather than having FS? Maybe there is something within the name to work with. - Sound waves, Complementary colours could help separate the departments. - Cool looking line icons, simple minimal, two colours?

More from logo lounge 7. - Simple black and white logo, White strokes creating an interesting symbol. - 3D Symbol along side a modern clean San Serif typeface.

Inspiration Gathered on the internet and pinned to my Pinterest Board *Logos

- I looked at BBC and ITV as they are a brilliant example of a Hub logo which has branched out into a family. BBC and ITV logos are consistent. The only thing that separates the family is Typeface and colour. Maybe this concept can be adopted for Future skills logo. - Another example is ROXY and QUICKSILVER. Using the same logo twice to create the girl equivalent of the quicksilver brand. Maybe this concept could be an outcome.

- Hidden imagery inside the typeface creating an nice sound wave. - Using imagery with typography, for example radio antenna and microphones to help alongside the type. - Bright fresh colours to help the communicate this being student led. - Script, hand drawn text feels expressive which relates to the brand.

- Change of style, looking more at a retro style logo. I think this type of logo would be liked by students. Something modern looking but has that retro feel.

- A badge? Could be a route to explore. Maybe incorporate some imagery alongside.

- Came across a dotted speaker image and thought maybe some typography with dots could help to communicate a radio station. - Had a look at Channel 4 logos. I like the use of shape in the More 4 logo. Maybe i can use the existing FS logo and re apply it to this role. - I thought the 3D effect in the 4 radio logo was nice, using one colour to highlight the 3D element. Maybe i could take the existing logo and turn it 3D. - Bit different logo within a shape, adapting the shape to have some character.

- I really like these Simple line icons. I’d like to produce work like this so maybe exploring this option with FS. Maybe create an icon for TV and a Icon for Radio and then include the typography underneath. - Black and white/ colours real simple minimal easy to look at and understand, clean and modern.

ADVANCED SKILLS - FS TV/RADIO DEVELOPMENT This development section will show how my ideas have been developed into the final piece of artwork in response to the brief. My sketchbook contains the ideas and thoughts I went through to get to this stage.

- Starting from the top left I was laying out the words to use and looking at how to arrange them. Thought it would be nice to have the FS as the hub and then TV and Radio to follow. Giving it some hierarchy. - Began thinking of imagery that could represent TV and Radio. Looking at a microphone and a TV, thought it would be interesting to have an icon. - I started to look at the letters F and S, trying to link them together. I thought to combine all this aspects thus creating a icon with FS as a symbol then having the text sit underneath. - Decided to change the TV to a satellite dish as I couldn’t really express the letters within a TV shape very effectively. The satellite was more flexible and works really well. - Typefaces. I wanted something simple, clean san serif, nothing to Bold. I wanted it to reflect future skills but still be young, modern and fresh for the students as it is them who will be using the brand.

- Here was a different concept. Taking the original Future Skills Logo and re-purposing it as it looked like sound waves and could work nicely for this concept. I Changed the logo a bit and made it 3D which also represented the buildings in the are and made it look more modern and student friendly. Choice of colour kept the same as future skills logo again to link it all together. - I was thinking about arrangement of the text with this design. Creating separate bubbles to show TV or Radio but i felt this made the design unbalanced.

- I began developing the icons further. Placing them into shapes to resemble a badge which I thought would appeal to the students more by making them feel apart of a community. - Experimenting with shapes and ordering the type. Circles worked best for this. The brief mentioned they might make materials like t shirts etc so the circle helps to enclose it. - Reverted back to black as it has to work in black then colour can be secondary. - The more simple the badge was felt right in keeping with the simplicity of the icons.

- Developing the badge further here. Using the circle and experimenting with ways of showing the text and icon. Half the circle solid and having the type punched out. Or the everything punched out of a solid shape. Lines to break apart the icon from the text so it was more easy on the eye. - Keeping with a nice thing typeface that compliments the icons stroke. - I brought in the future skills bars again to show that it’s still linked with the college. I tried some colours just to see what it would look like at this stage. - The bottom three were the designs I took forward to develop more.

- Continued to develop the 3D logo more looking at colours to separate the TV from the Radio as they use the same image. I thought a blue and a red work well together as they are complementary colours. - I was working more with the type on this one. Trying out different weights and hierarchy’s. - Looking to change the bars into pure line rather than a solid reflecting my previous idea. Thought it looked quite fresh and the type fits in well underneath. - I then began to break them apart. Using the re purposed logo and separated it from the type. Then arranging the type underneath or to the side and again bringing in some hierarchy on the TV and Radio as that is more important. The FS will be consistent. Very interchangeable if they want to expand. Colour also helped distinguish them from each other.

- Another idea i wanted to try out using the 3D element from my previous idea. I found this fun using an isometric grid to crate these logos. - Focusing more on the FS and trying to include the Future skills logo. - This was just an experiment which I didn’t develop further as I thought my other ideas were stronger.

- After presenting the final logos which are on the previous pages. My icon designs were chosen. The brief became more personal and they wanted to work with me to develop the project along. They actually loved the icon idea, just the icons. They asked me to produce a further logo which would represent the music department. Here is some development I started looking at all how I could Shape FS into something that represents music. - The music note stood out the most and was in keeping with the other icons when sat side by side. I added a slight angle to reflect the note even more. I thought this one worked better then the horizontal one as that one seemed to be lacking some flare.

- These were the final logos I sent over to future skills. The project is still evolving and is currently still be developed. In the meantime they will be using these logos to represent these new departments and I will be credited and will be working with them more.
