The Scoop On Summer School gets out in May and you’re probably already planning a few summer trips. But, if you haven’t stocked up on frequent flyer points or vacation hours, then a weekend getaway might be more up your alley. Check out our Travel and Adventure Guide on page 26 for fun ideas from fishing to hiking to zip-lining, all within a short drive from home. And, after interviewing and taking photos of 12-year-old Master Chef Junior contestant and Sugar Hill resident, Justise Mayberry, we were feeling pretty inspired. Master Chef Junior is a reality TV cooking competition on FOX Network, hosted by award-winning chef Gordon Ramsay and Christina Tosi. Out of thousands of applicants from the best young chefs in the nation, Justise has made it all the way to the top six (at the time of publishing). Tune in every Thursday at 8pm on FOX to see if she will make it all way to the finale. Read more about her adventures in the kitchen on page 46.

embroidery, rhinestones, patches or reconstructing the piece. And in fact, Curtis even helps sew and reconstruct the clothing for her, too. One piece they are proud of is a bomber jacket, which features some of Curtis’ photography and artwork on patches they sewed into the jacket. “That was a great collaboration project,” said Kaiya. Void Space Productions also specializes in featuring items you won’t find anywhere else. “A lot of people come in and say there’s nothing else like this around here. I have people that come in and just enjoy the vibe and want to chill out here. I take that as a compliment,” said Curtis.

As an artist himself, his goal is to really support other independent artists and for eventually everything in the store to be handmade. Currently the walls are decorated with Curtis’ own beautiful photography that is printed on canvas, but he would love to feature other artists and invite them to sell their work in his shop. “If any local artists are interested in selling their work here, they can reach out to me,” he said. “Without connection, without collaboration, we are essentially nothing. Really, the goal is to inspire people through my work and other artists’ work,” he explained. Curtis and Kaiya got their start by traveling to different festivals in the area and selling their work. Kaiya set up a mobile clothing boutique and Curtis sold his photography pieces. “We did about 16 festivals in a 6 month time span – it was a lot of fun, but exhausting,” said Curtis. Due to the success and overwhelmingly positive response from the community, Curtis and Kaiya opened the doors to their stores in August 2016, with the help and support of their mom, Lena Smith. Both Curtis and Kaiya speak very highly of their mother, who has supported them every step of the way. “I’m very grateful for her, without my mom this
all would have just been an idea – but she helped us actually execute,” said Kaiya. “She’s a great mom and an inspiration for how I want to be for my children… seeing your child’s dreams come to life and surpassing even your own,” said Curtis. Both Curtis and Kaiya have plans to grow and expand over the next 5-10 years. “Being such a young business owner is extremely rewarding, but it is hard work. My advice is if you have help then definitely take it because there’s nothing wrong with accepting help and support. Be consistent, but always try to create fresh and new ideas,” said Kaiya. “We want people to know that there’s a universe inside of you and anything is possible,” said Curtis. ■

➽ Team Ryan takes it one step further in ensuring that people understand exactly what work is being done to their car with their “digital inspection sheets.” For every routine oil change, they include a 25-point inspection outlined with photos, technician notes and a color-coded system: green for good health, yellow for things that need attention in the near future and red for safety concerns and priorities. “It’s all about empowering the customer and making sure they aren’t surprised by anything,” explained Shara. “We’re going to be trustworthy and honest. Our inspection sheets act as a mirror: a reflection of exactly what’s going on with your car,” she continued. The 25-point inspection and oil service also comes with a tire rotation and complete brake inspection. Some places will say they’re doing a brake inspection, but if they aren’t rotating the tires as well, then they can’t truly do a full inspection.

➽ Team Ryan’s technicians apply what they call, “Strategy-Based Diagnostics” every time a vehicle enters their shop. This provides a structured process for diagnosing and repairing vehicles in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible. Silverbacks Indoor has indoor soccer programs for kids starting as young as 18 months old.
SILVERBACKS INDOOR Silverbacks Indoor is celebrating their 15th anniversary this year, along with a lot of new and exciting changes. Tucked in a cul-de-sac off Brogdon Exchange Road, Silverbacks Indoor’s expansive facility can actually be a bit hard to find at first. But once discovered, you will realize it is Gwinnett’s hidden gem for kids, families and athletes alike. In 2005, Silverbacks Indoor started solely as an indoor soccer league program. One of the most unique aspects about Silverbacks Indoor is that they offer “indoor soccer classes” called “Silver Kickers” starting at age 18 months. “This is one of the only athletic and child development programs that I can think of that a child that young can do,” said Beckwith. Until about age three, parents participate in the classes with their children, too. The program is designed in a way that really focuses on mastering the basic skills at a fundamental level, rather than throwing three year olds on the field to just run around. "My whole approach is we want you to posses the basic skill set first. A lot of times they think you start by just putting them in a league, but we want them to learn to dribble and pass and learn the skills. To me, what we do is very important for your kids success in soccer to learn the basic skills first - which is what the Silver Kickers is about,” he said. All Silverbacks coaches are licensed or have at least high school and college level experience. "I’m teaching 18-month-olds about balance, coordination and how to follow directions, but by disguising it in the form of activities or games that they can do and understand. Then we slowly progress them as they get older and introduce scrimmaging. But you have to go through our program to advance,” said Beckwith. Oftentimes, Silverbacks indoor soccer classes are used in the off-season for outdoor soccer players to build their skill-sets due to the faster-paced nature of the game. “Players who learn indoor soccer or Futsal first tend to play a lot better and a lot faster when they get on an outdoor field,” he explained. In fact, many local youth programs Silverbacks Indoors’ programs are designed in are pushing their a way for players to develop basic skills from a players to play young age, before joining a team. Futsal in the offseason because it is very fast-paced and improves foot skills. Futsal is played on a lined court

whereas indoor soccer is played on a turf field with walls. Silverbacks Suwanee has the only official Futsal lined surface in the area. Adding to their already-extensive list of services, Silverbacks Indoor offers weekly camps throughout the summer for kids, ages 5-13. Day camps run from 8:30am – 4:30pm, but to accommodate working parents they offer extended hours from 7:30am to 6:30pm. As a working parent himself, Beckwith understands the importance of flexibility for busy schedules, which is why he offers pay-as-you go or daily drop-in options for both classes and camps. Open seven days a week, he hosts youth programs or day camps every time Gwinnett County Public Schools are closed, except on actual holidays. And if you ever have to miss a class that you’ve already paid for, then he allows you to roll it over to any other alternate time or even into the next season. One of the reasons that Silverbacks Indoor has been so successful is because of their ability to diversify themselves and to allow the community to shape the space based on their needs, demands and desires. “We’re a family friendly place and have a program for everybody: from as soon as you can walk to until you can’t walk anymore,” said Beckwith. “Whether you have a team and need a place to play or you’re a “free agent” and want to play for fun, we will find a spot for you,” he said. ■

A: Ask yourself: how technology can ease the friction of things that you’re doing day to day? How can I automate certain sectors of my business and what processes can be improved? Take for example a mid-size company with an HR department – maybe they could use an app to streamline time-off requests, formal complaints, voting for employee of the month, etc. It’s all about making the processes more streamlined and removing user/ human error.
A: Think about the man-power and the time invested in your marketing efforts. Let's take a restaurant loyalty program for example. Back in the day you used to have to collect data from your customers and manually enter all that information, but an app automates the system and gathers all of that valuable information for you. The day and age of customer punch cards are gone. Why would you even do that when you aren’t collecting any customer data from that? Build a customer retention or customer loyalty app instead. Another example could be managing a fleet – you’ve got a team of truck drivers out there or you have a sales team on the road and you want to be able to see where they are at any given time and communicate with them in real-time, well that is possible through an app. At the end of the day, it’s all about making your life better and easier, so yes, I’d say in most cases it has great ROI.
So, as a business owner, what are some of the questions I could ask myself in determining whether or not I need an app?
Q: Okay, I want an app, what are the first steps? A: The first step is definitely defining your objective. What
problem is this going to solve and how will it help your end user? From there, we will figure out what specific data points and content we will need to populate into the wireframe.
Q:
You’ve been a website developer for a long time. Is this similar to building websites?
A: This is a good one, because five years ago it was a
completely different language in terms of coding. But, now we can use Javascript and HTML, which is what we use every day to build websites so they have helped developers overcome that hurdle.
How do I know if an app is going to be a good return on investment?
Q:
You built the Suwanee Beer Fest app for this year’s event… which was great, by the way. Tell us about your favorite features of that app.
A: The coolest thing for me was tracking the real-time voting for the Brew Battle, seeing votes go up and down in realtime and seeing how many people were participating. Q:
What was the end goal with the Suwanee Beer Fest app?

A: To improve the customer experience. We thought about what we wanted from an attendee perspective and that was the ability to rate and save the beers you try when there are hundreds in front of you at the festival. I know from my own beer festival experiences that it is hard to remember what beers you liked best, so to be able to save them to my profile and go back to review them later was huge for me.

Hey, I think I am a great Dad, but I am in absolute awe of this woman that I get to call my wife, and that our kids get to call Mommy. She is an attorney, a family attorney, to be exact. She is such a resilient, intelligent, and compassionate person... oh and she is as beautiful on the outside as she is wonderful in her heart. Easy for me to say, I am in love with her, right? Well other moms agree, because they told me in their own words, "Joe, your wife is the total package." She is so strong, and smart – she put herself through law school. I love that my daughter looks up to her and can see that she can be whatever she wants and make it happen just like mommy did. Ashley also is a bit of an artist. She is so talented in so many media: she paints in watercolor, and people buy those online, she has done design work for the likes of Pottery Barn on their blog and worked with La Crema, the wine company, too. Oh, and by the way, she does law work that involves kids adoption, custody, etc. She is like a superhero: lawyer by day and mommy, blogger, designer, artist and wife by night. And I can attest, she does all of it well. Nothing goes by the wayside. It's amazing, and THAT is why I think there is no way that she isn't the best mom in the area. She has got to be. Don't tell her though, she will never believe how awesome she is, and that is why I am speaking up!
This is my beautiful and amazing Mother-in-Law. Her name is Matty and she is 86 years old! She is an incredible human being that has helped so many people (including me) be a better person. Her life is her family- she deserves to be the best mom in Suwanee because she dedicates her life to all of those who surround her. Her wisdom, her passion for helping others and her dedication to her family is incredible. She has a heart of gold and I am proud to call her my mother-in-law. I have been blessed with her and I thank God for putting her in my path.

Whether you love the beach, the mountains or exploring a new city, you will want to make the best of your trip, and that means staying healthy while you are away. For many vacation-goers, the addition of a few pounds while trying new foods and lounging on the beach with your favorite adult beverage is par for the course. But, with a little planning and some forethought, you can totally stay on track with your goals of living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining your weight while you're away. PACK HEALTHY SNACKS.
Snacks such as fruit, nuts, greek yogurt or turkey jerky will stave off those hunger pains and prevent you from overeating or indulging in processed foods that will keep those cravings coming.
SLEEP, SLEEP, & MORE SLEEP! The most important thing you can do while traveling is sleep. Your body needs rest when you’re physically traveling, crossing time zones, carrying luggage to and from destinations, walking all day, and so forth. Traveling is harsh on your body so make sure you get plenty of rest. How much is enough? Don't set your alarm. Let your body wake up when it's ready. Listen to your body. I usually run on 7 hours of sleep, but if I need a few more zzzzzs, my body will let me know.
BEGIN YOUR DAY WITH BREAKFAST. When eating out, opt for eggs with veggies, some turkey bacon and fresh fruit. fruit The protein will keep you feeling full and the veggies will keep you regular while providing you with much needed vitamins.

CHOOSE ACTIVITIES THAT KEEP YOUR BODY MOVING! My idea of vacation is definitely one that involves excursions or exploring the area I'm visiting. If you're near the water, try kyaking, rafting, paddleboarding, body surfing, or just fun beach activities like paddle ball or bocce. Even just standing will burn extra calories and will prevent you from mindlessly snacking. The bottom line here is just to move your body! Whether you are hiking, playing tennis or mini golf with your kids, you are getting your steps in and teaching your family that activity is FUN!
PACE YOURSELF.
Don’t try to see the entire city all in one day. If you plan to do a lot in a big city, consider staying longer to really take in the sights and sounds. You’ll also get to know the area more instead of just being able to say that you’ve “been there.”

Whether you're doing a lot of standing, lounging or walking, starting the day off with a good stretch will keep you feeling refreshed. Stretch your legs, back, arms, neck, etc. Better yet, find a pretty spot and wake up with a few yoga poses to not only stretch your body but to establish mental clarity. I love to find a quiet spot in nature where I can hear the birds and other wildlife. If that's not possible, it is pretty easy to sneak in simple neck and shoulder stretches throughout the day while you’re waiting for your food, the bathroom, transportation, etc. It's also a good idea to stretch right before bedtime because it relaxes your muscles and promotes a good night's sleep.
MEET THE FIT MOM:
EAT YOUR FRUITS AND VEGGIES. When eating out, be sure to include plenty of fruits and veggies!! Ask for a side of veggies instead of fries, order a salad with vinaigrette on the side, stop by a local market and pick up some fresh fruit. The fiber will fill you up and keep your colon happy.
HYDRATE! HYDRATE! HYDRATE! Carry a water bottle with you at all times. Add some lemon or lime for a burst of flavor and sip throughout the day. If you are feeling sluggish and have a dull headache, you may be dehydrated. Water will keep you feeling energized and will keep your skin glowing. So, drink up!!! Your body will THANK YOU.

HAVE AN EXERCISE ROUTINE. WALK OR BIKE EVERYWHERE. Get your daily exercise and truly learn about a place at the same time. I love to take in the sights by foot, but if you have sightseeing destinations a little further away, renting a bike can be so much fun. Many cities have bike lanes and a place for parking. You'll get your heart rate up, tone your legs, and see the city at the same time. Going to the beach? Even better! Rent a bike for the week and avoid the traffic. On the 5th floor? Take the stairs and skip the elevator. All those steps will add up and you'll reach 10,000 before you know it.
TAKE YOUR VITAMINS. It can be difficult to eat a healthy balanced meal with all the essential vitamins when traveling, so take your daily multi-vitamins to supplement your meals.
PROTECT YOUR SKIN.
Protect your skin from being outdoors by wearing sunscreen with minimum SPF 15. Reapply every two hours if you can. Nothing ruins a vacation like a tender sunburn, so lather up.
If you are one who enjoys a gym, be sure to get a hotel with a fitness center. Personally, my favorite way to stay fit on vacation is to find a bench or a trail and do some body weight exercises. Think push-ups, squats, lunges, planks. You can work your entire body in minutes and it's FREE!! I also like to go for a jog around the neighborhood I'm visiting. Make it a circuit and every other post or telephone pole can be an opportunity to do something fun (jumping jacks, lunges, side kicks, squat jumps, etc.) Just make it a priority. Start your day with intention and those good actions will help you make positive choices throughout the day.
BRING YOUR HAND SANITIZER. The last thing you want on vacation is to catch a cold or virus. Keeping a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your purse comes in handy when water and soap aren’t available, which can happen quite frequently when traveling.
GET ENERGY FROM A PROTEIN SMOOTHIE. Bring a protein powder and mix it in a magic bullet. My go-tos on the road are protein smoothies. Add some spinach and a little peach and you'll have energy all day long.

Giving Girls A Foundation To Fly
Non-profit, Foundation to Fly empowers girls of all ages, to be confident, self-assured leaders. BY: Angela Veugeler
or any parent, helping to guide your child through adolescence can be overwhelming. Most parents work hard to try to set their child up for success, but with so many outside influences, it’s easy to find yourself worrying if there is something else you can do to help instill a sense of self-confidence in your child. Foundation to Fly was created to do exactly that. Founded in 2011 by Janelle Draper, Foundation to Fly is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose aim is to empower girls of all ages to be confident, self-assured leaders. Knowing how difficult growing up can be for girls and how they tend to internalize things, Draper felt driven to start the organization. “It’s my way of doing what I can to pay it forward, for the girls to be able to ask questions and to give them tools they need to help navigate the rest of their lives,” she shared. The after school program, Roots and Wings, is for girls in grades 3-5, providing lessons rooted in social and emotional intelligence as well as universal traits of leadership. Currently meeting weekly at White Oak Elementary in Sugar Hill, the group is limited to 16 participants and has had a waiting list every year. Each week, the group participates in different team building activities, service projects or
challenges. The aim is to help the girls gain a greater understanding of how to manage their own emotions (both socially and emotionally), build communication skills, grow as leaders and most importantly, realize how much they matter. “We really try to teach the girls the impact they have on everything- both positive and negative,” shared Draper. Just before Easter their meeting involved filling Easter eggs. Each girl took a dozen candy-filled eggs home with them along with a sign reading, “You’ve been egged.” Draper encouraged the students to visit one or two neighbors they were familiar with and hide the eggs for them to find, leaving the sign behind and spreading joy. They discussed as a group why service to others is important and how spreading joy can have a huge positive impact. One girl shared, “If you’re making someone else’s day, on a scale of 1 to 10, it’s about a 9.9 chance that it’s going to make your day, too.” Another girl chimed in about spreading joy, “It’s like a very good virus!” “Service is really about everyone that receives as well as the person giving the service. It shows that you matter; that kindness might not happen if it weren’t for you,” said Draper. One of her favorite meetings is when the 5th graders graduate. They have each fifth grader Foundation to Fly stand up while Founder, Janelle Draper, with Roots all of the girls and Wings girls share something positive about that one girl. “It is so impactful to watch the moms seeing other girls surrounding their daughter and lifting her up in a loving, kind way.” Draper shared, “Being a girl is tough, navigating girlhood is tough. - Janelle Draper, They are their best selves here Foundation to Fly and I’m fortunate to see that.” Founder Draper hopes the positive impact Foundation to Fly is having at White Oak will grow into other schools and organizations in order to reach more girls. The White Oak chapter will be looking for other possible locations in the fall to host more groups. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and Georgia Veterinary Medical Association. She has been the President of the Gwinnett County Veterinary Medical Association since 2014. Although she loves all aspects of veterinary medicine, her professional interests include feline internal medicine, geriatric care, ultrasound, and community outreach. She is a new mommy and her son, Jonah, is the light of her life. In her spare time, Dr. Johansen enjoys spending time with her family, reading, crocheting, and playing with her guinea pigs and golden retriever, Ellie Mae.

ummer can be a great time to focus on being social and connecting with others. If your kid seems shy or is struggling to make or keep friends, then here are several ways you can help them increase their social skills and network of friends.
Empathize then problem solve. It can be tempting to
immediately jump into problem solving when you see your kid struggling to make or keep friends. Try to help them recognize how they are feeling and then empathize with them before helping them figure out what to do next. Try saying things like “it sounds like you are feeling nervous” or “that sounds like a really frustrating situation”. Once your child feels heard and understood, they will be more likely to open up and feel ready to problem solve how to handle a stressful situation.
Practice, practice, practice.
Kids learn how to handle a variety of social situations by watching how you handle things and modeling your behavior. Make it a point to model the social skills you’d like to see in your kids. Say hi to others, ask lots of questions, talk about how different people perceive the same situation, and always look others in the eye. You

can even make a game of it by role-playing different situations they might find themselves in or specific interactions they struggle with.
Give them opportunities to succeed socially. Be proactive
and organize play dates for your kids. If possible, find activities that allow you to watch them socialize with others and look for areas they may need a little help navigating. Socializing on play dates where it is more one-on-one is way more forgiving than socializing in a large group at school and can even help create new friendships. Whipping up dishes like peanut butter and jelly macaroons, pistachio pudding pie and pan-seared shrimp with quinoa, Justise has already won multiple challenges. Her win in the pistachio pudding pie competition even gave her a chance to smash the pie into famous chef/host Gordon Ramsay’s face. “I didn’t want to mess up his face,” Justise laughed. “I thought maybe I smashed it a little too hard!" And while that might be the highlight for some young chefs, Justise has already snagged herself an even bigger prize. Earning the win in the Mystery Box challenge presented by former First Lady Michelle Obama, Justise earned the opportunity to not only

It was something I always thought about, but something I never thought I’d be able to do,” said Justise. “I got to get a glimpse of what their life was like there!” Participating in one of the most watched cooking competitions in America might be stressful for some, but Justise describes the experience as something you get to do “once in a lifetime.” “It was really busy, but we got used to it. And, it was so cool to be able to meet (celebrity chefs/hosts Gordon Ramsay and Christina Tosi) for the first time,” she shared. At the young age of 11, Justise faced the competition with eight years of cooking experience already under her belt. Thanks to her foodie father, Jamaal Mayberry, Justise grew up around the kitchen and has spent years developing her sophisticated palate. “At age 4 she’d come into the kitchen and taste everything. She loves to eat,” he explained. “I’d let her help with prep, teaching her
about different spices, and from that we went into learning how to cut… starting with a butter knife. It was a very gradual process. She soon started making her own sauces and marinades and we’d discuss what was missing or different things we could have added,” he continued. With the passion for cooking instilled in her from such a young age, Justise knew what it was like putting in hours of work in the kitchen before the competition even started. This mentality helped her keep her focus on the long days on set. Describing an average day of filming, Justise shared that her days began around 5:30 am. Each night producers would slip a note under their door instructing them what time to be ready and what to wear for set the next day. In the morning a bus would come by, pick them up from the hotel and take them directly to the set. The hours spent not filming were spent keeping up with schoolwork, conducting interviews and practicing cooking techniques. “I was there for three months and I kept my grades up. I had all A’s and B’s,” Justise proudly informed us. As the competition heats up and Justise continues to prove to be a force in the kitchen, we know this little chef has a bright future in store. When dreaming up her future plans, Justise shared that her goal is to eventually become a teacher. If not a schoolteacher, a teacher for junior chefs like herself. “I’d love for every kid to learn how to cook like I learned how to cook. Basically, I’d like to start my own little MasterChef Junior business,” she said. And, if her talent in the kitchen is any indicator, we’d guess this talented MasterChef Junior star can do whatever it is she puts her mind to. ■

On a beautiful spring morning, some of the women on our staff met at our office in Gwinnett and climbed aboard the VIP Southern Tours luxury bus. From there, the entire day was truly a VIP experience. VIP Southern Tours was formed three years ago and is owned by husband-wife team, Charles and Chistina Ernst. Their mission: “to provide the finest wine tour experience on the East Coast.” VIP Southern Tours offers wine tasting adventures at a variety of wineries along the Unicoi Wine Trail: a wine lovers destination located in White County, Georgia. Their partner wineries include: Habersham, Sylvan Valley, Serenity Cellars, Yonah Mountain and Cottage Vineyards.

Tours include four wineries, tastings at each and a gourmet picnic lunch; although they can customize the experience based on individual needs or preferences. On Sunday tours, you will visit three wineries as opposed to four since wineries open later. We went on a Sunday, but still had the most wine-filled, fun-filled day we could hope for! We had the luxury of Charles being our tour guide and driver for the day. Charles and his wife, Christina, are passionate about the North Georgia culture and specifically about supporting the local wine community. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating and fun! Personally, I’m a bit wary of guided tours and especially tour buses, but this was truly a VIP experience, with the added benefit

of no one having to worry about driving to and from each winery. Charles and Christina pay great attention to detail, ensuring an unforgettable day. Each tour will vary slightly and they can even accommodate tours in other regions including the Dahlonega Wine Trail or Rabun County Wine Trail.

beautiful, family-owned boutique winery inspired by the Italian lifestyle. Owned by award-winning winemaker, Joe Smith, Serenity Cellars specializes in combining Old Worldstyle artisanship with modern techniques to craft exceptional wines with unique character. Our tasting lineup included: September Oaks Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Traminette, La Famiglia Rosso and Contentment Red Blend. Smith makes wines for about 14 different wineries, from Florida to Maine, and captures the essence of what each climate has to offer. In the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, his Traminette has won double gold, best in class and best white in the US. “But to me, a gold medal is when the customer comes in and is very happy, loves the wine and leaves with the Serenity Cellars in Cleveland, Georgia bottle. We make wines that you will only taste here and nowhere else,” said Smith. Joe and his wife started the winery in 2005 with the goal of making it a community-oriented, family-style destination. They have an outdoor brick pizza oven and invite families to bring their own dough, sauce and toppings and have a chef that will cook it for you at no charge. “The community comes out, shares pizza and wine, and we have live music going – it really is an extension of our home,” said Smith.

Greater Atlanta Christian School senior named as a First Team Academic All American ■ Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) graduating senior and superstar volleyball player, Cienna Townson recorded 766 assists, 222 digs and 60 aces and earned All-State honors for the second straight season. The school career assist leader led GAC to the state quarterfinals in her three years as a starter. Academically, she has a 4.37 GPA on a 4.33 scale and scored 1500 on her SAT. A National Merit Commended Scholar, Townson worked on a Nicaragua Mission Team for two years with the goal of helping villages receive clean drinking water. She recently received the Girl Scouts Gold Award, given to only 5.4% of all scouts. She is passionate about recycling and taking care of the environment and created a board game called Trash It or Recycle It. “Cienna is the heart of our team, biggest encourager, most excellent athlete and top student,” said Coach, Kristy Shelton. Cienna has been accepted into the prestigious Ervin Scholar Program at Washington University in St. Louis.

Peace, Love & Arts in the Park â– Arts in the Park is set to take place on Saturday, May 13th from 10:00am to 5:00pm in Suwanee Town Center Park. Girl Scouts Hold Gwinnett ToGetHerThere Luncheon â– Over 6,000 girls are members of the Girl Scouts in Gwinnett County. On Tuesday, May MAY 16th, the Girl Scouts of Gwinnett will host a ToGetHerThere Luncheon at Ashton Gardens in Sugar Hill to help every girl reach her fullest potential. The luncheon aims to bring local businesses and community leaders together, with proceeds from the event directly supporting the girls served in Gwinnett, including more than 1,000 underserved girls. Fran Gary, President of Federal Government Solutions Anthem will serve as Key Note Speaker for the event. Gary is an advocate of the Girl Scouts and their goal of helping each girl to reach her fullest potential. Celebrities Compete for Cooper’s Cup at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic
Cooper’s surviving family: Kevin, Parker and Donna O’Brien showcase the memorial trophy, the Cooper’s Cup, at the 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Classic.
■ The Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TCP Sugarloaf took place from April 10-16, 2017. Three celebrities played in the Celebrity Challenge on Saturday, April 15th. Each celebrity played for a charity of their choice: John Smoltz for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), Tom Glavine for CURE Childhood Cancer and Kevin Butler for Cooper’s Crew. Former UGA and NFL football player, Kevin Butler, formed a relationship with the O’Briens when Cooper played alongside him on the winning team in 2014. Today, in addition to competing for a donation to a charity of their choice, the celebrities are vying for the coveted Cooper’s Cup - a trophy created in memory of Cooper O’Brien. This year John Smoltz won for CHOA, but the O’Briens are grateful for the awareness it brought to Cooper’s Crew and for the tournament’s dedication to commemorating Cooper and his legacy.
Suwanee Beer Fest Donates to Cooper’s Crew ■ Suwanee Beer Fest proudly donated a portion of proceeds of the 7th annual festival to Cooper’s Crew. The $7,000 raised will go directly to the 2017 Cooper's Crew scholarship fund. Last year, Cooper’s Crew was able to award three recipients, and this year, due to increased fundraising efforts, they will be able to grant four or more scholarships to deserving students. To date, Suwanee Beer Fest organizers have been able to donate over $75,000 to local charities.
Cooper’s Crew is a Suwanee nonprofit that was founded in honor of Cooper O’Brien, a North Gwinnett Middle School student who lost his battle to Clear Cell Sarcoma at the young age of 14. Today, his legacy lives on through the Cooper’s Crew Fund and the Cooper O’Brien Scholarship Fund. The Cooper’s Crew Fund provides funding for research and development to help find a cure for childhood cancer. The Cooper O’Brien Scholarship Fund grants scholarships to graduating North Gwinnett High School seniors who have overcome unique challenges and adversities.

North Gwinnett High School Robotics Team wins FIRST Robotics Competition in Dalton
â– Against all odds, the North Gwinnett High School Robotics Team won the FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) in Dalton, Georgia and then competed in the State Championship at UGA in April, placing 21st out of 45 teams across the state. We received a firsthand account from NGHS Robotics Team member, Katie Park: Our team, the Electric Phoenixes (1771), started in 2014. We are student-led, meaning we design, program and earn sponsors for our robot ourselves. Our robot competes in FRC, founded by Dean Kamen to promote the STEM field, particularly to women and minorities. This year, FRC's game is called STEAMWORKS, where we design a robot to deliver gears, shoot balls into a goal, and climb a six-foot rope in about 3 minutes. The first two days in Dalton, we were feeling pretty confident in our bot, but as most competitions go, new problems were waiting for us in the pit. Our climber broke, gearboxes and PCMs (pneumatic control modules) blew up, and countless other issues led to our rank of 25 out of 35. However, despite the grim outlook of our bot, our team excelled at one thing: friendship and enthusiasm. Immediately we went to work fixing our bot. Calculations predicted us to lose every match, our laptop died, and our gearboxes were constantly breaking, but we continued to press on, whether it was working on the robot or cheering in the stands. After three arduous times of fixing the climber, we climbed in our second round, beat the highest score in the nation with 470 points, and won the event! Personally, joining robotics has been an incredible experience for me. This club has taught many students like me, with no prior knowledge, how to program, design, and lead a group. We would not be where we are today without our amazing teachers, Mr. Batten and Mr. Lossner who have donated a lot of their time and advice.
